http://inprogressgaming.com/dominion-card-picker/ is a really great randomizer website. It lets you pick which expansions you want to randomize from, and includes other options (such as always including a village, always including a trasher, min/max number of attacks, etc.) which you can customize. In my experience, it very rarely produces a dud kingdom.

In terms of expansions, Renaissance does a great job at providing new concepts with (somewhat) simple cards. If you want complex cards with fewer additional concepts, Dark Ages might be good. If you want new concepts with complex cards, I would go with Adventures or Empires. I would recommend going with the new concepts and simple-ish cards, so Renaissance would be my choice.

thanks that's indeed a cool randomizer ! I have some on iOS and android but I am not sure they are as flexible.
Anyhow, I have generated 2 kingdoms from a few sets, and I hope we will be able to try them tonight!

I don't see any reason why a combination of 3 sets would be more fun than a combination of 2 sets.  In particular, I think that the recommended sets are probably actually more fun than what someone here is going to haphazardly come up with, although there may be some kingdoms that someone has found fun that they could share, but what's fun for some people that like and have played Dominion for a while may not be fun for your friend that has so far not enjoyed the game.

If you want to do random sets, but not take everything, I'd just take 2 sets with you, shuffle the randomizers together and deal out some random kingdoms.  When restricted to 2 sets, it is unusual for a kingdom to be completely not fun...but if you happen to get a set-up with no +2 action cards, or too many attacks or whatever, just say that looks overly skewed, let's adjust it, and take the next random card that meets your criteria.

I'm a bit confused about their reaction to the previous game, specifically the Workshop-Gardens comment. I think you would have been better served playing workshop-gardens than telling them about it afterwards...and even better served by changing the set as I mentioned in my post in that thread :)

One thing in particular I would like to know, you said "Everyone got Chapel". Did everyone (anyone) trash all their coppers and estates?

Well, the idea was to use Base + intrigue at least, to have a few cards they may know and also these are among the expansions I have sorted and printed/laminated dividers. Then, I wanted something a bit more complicated such as duration cards, or events...to showcase what dominion can be.
But maybe I am overthinking things.
I could also do something like intrigue + prosperity for instance. However, I was also thunking that having a few events from adventures might be a good idea to show that there are other types of cards...

I think one of them did trash pretty much everything but I am not sure about the other. I think he did because he used Chapel a lot but also because he got a lot of curses.

Thanks for your reply.
In principle, I agree with you but : (i) I have most expansions, and lugging all of them to my friends' house is not practical;

So bring fewer cards but enough for an evening of fun. That is not the important thing. The important thing is that you don't get your friends to think that this game is about playing certain fixed kingdoms.

I see your point, but I don't think they got this idea and that was not really the issue at hand.

Thanks for your reply.
In principle, I agree with you but : (i) I have most expansions, and lugging all of them to my friends' house is not practical; (ii) the variability of Dominion benefits immensely of combinatorial maths; however, it can also be its "demise" at times if the combination of 10 cards is not "fun" (I agree, the definition of fun is not the same for everyone)

My idea was to find a few interesting kingdoms without me having to search for them and think about them, indeed not to have any preconceived idea of the relevant strategies, as I will already probably be able to discover some before them as we play (although I have mostly played the base game online for now).

I could use some of the recommended setups but I mostly see combos of 2 sets whereas I think a combination of 3 would probably be more fun.

Hi everyone,

as I said in another topic, I introduced the game to 2 friends and we played 2 base game kingdoms, and they did not like it.
I may have the opportunity to do a 2-player game with one of them, and I am considering "upping up" the ante, with a more complex kingdom, including cards from Base, Intrigue, and potentially Prosperity and/or Adventures and/or Dark Ages.
I am looking for a kingdom with potentially multiple strategies, interaction and "original" cards, such as the "level up" cards in Adventures (although I am not sure how competitive they are).
The idea would be to show that Dominion can be much more than just "Draw 2 cards +1 Action" or "Draw 3 cards"...
Maybe adding some events from Adventures as well, although I have never tried them for now (only in a few games online).

thanks for any suggestions/feed back !

Help! / Re: My 1st rated game (with cards I did not know)!
« on: September 26, 2019, 11:54:05 am »
Thanks for the kind words !

Ok so it seems I totally underestimated Sculptor. My reasoning was that Festival and Artisan were the key cards here and I had to go to Artisan quickly, hence Festival was necessary (and anyhow, I wanted to build a festival-lackey engine with a bit of council room).

Also, as I dismissed Vassal (it's not a card I used a lot and vaued a lot), I did not see a lot of value in 3-4 cost cards (basically I thought I needed 1 moneylender and a few poacher at most). Indeed, I now see that moneylender a bit earlier and at least 1 vassal in the mid-game would have been better (above all as I realize now that the combo with Artisan is pretty nifty!)

As to poacher, I did not really mind if a pile emptied in the late game and indeed I emptied the Festivals at the end. But yeah, I only got 2 of them, just in case.

Help! / My 1st rated game (with cards I did not know)!
« on: September 25, 2019, 11:47:12 am »
Hi everyone,

I did my 1st rated game online today and I won even though there was quite a few cards I did not know (by the way, is it possible to do automatching but only with my familiar cards?).

Kingdom was :
Poacher Council room Festival Sculptor Artisan
Lackeys Acting Troup Experiment Vassal MoneyLender
Landmarks : Fair Fleet

I am not sure what is the best way to post the log, but here it is :

I was lucky because I am quite used to Festival and Artisan boards so that's what I was looking for initially. I liked lackeys as a drawer and a way to smooth my draws (with council room for instance). I did not see a lot of value to Experiment and Sculptor and I felt 1 moneylender was enough.

Any remarks ?
thanks !

Ok, so I did try the Size distortion kingdom and it did not went well for my friends. I ended winning 13 to -2 and -3 by 3-piling.
Everyone got Chapel and then one of them tried the witch + Festival route as did I (with Artisan) but he missed (I think) the throne room so that he was not able to have huge turns as I did.
The other one tried an hybrid bandit - festival route but he lacked Witch and got a lot of curses and not enough festival to draw his deck consistently.

Anyhow, they both did not have a lot of fun and found that basically there was only 1 optimal strategy to each kingdom and that you had to find it otherwise you were toast. I told them about worskhop-gardens but tey did not find that very fun either. I did told then that this was indeed more or less the idea of the game and the variability stemmed from the different kingdoms. We compared it a lot with Race for the Galaxy, a game that I introduced them around 2011 and that they still love, although they had some difficulties at first...

So, unfortunately, Dominion will not hit the tables for some time, much to my dismay...
I will try again in a few weeks hopefully.

9
I hadn't looked at what the First Game Setup was before my previous post. My main point was that the game is obviously going to be longer when everyone is using bad strategies. I would actually recommend playing a kingdom where Big Money is not a winning strategy, rather something more exciting. If you want maximum interaction and are using Intrigue, definitely use Masquerade (except that the more interaction, the longer the game will take so there's a balance to be struck there). Looking at the recommended Base kingdoms, I like Size Distortion (without the putrid Bureaucrat that newer players tend to overvalue -- maybe use Smithy instead). It gives options like whether to go for Workshop/Gardens or try to corner the market on Gold with Bandit, how to use Artisan, etc. Maybe you could pick a different strategy than your friends, beat them with that, then play again and when they try your 1st game strategy try a different one and beat them with that to show them the skill involved in winning, not just picking the obvious strategy and hoping you get lucky.

thanks I will have a look at this kingdom.
I planned to do Base + intrigue so that they can see the "choice cards" as well.

Help! / Re: 1st game setup : what did I do wrong ?
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:53:19 am »
thanks !

I think my main mistake was indeed not getting the remodel T4 and having maybe a wee bit too many terminals vs. Village.

11
THanks all for the recommendations.
I will have a look at "the plot thickens" and other recommendations.

@JKrich: yeah, maybe we should replay the same basic setup and I should try Big money to show a different strategy.
The thing is, we have so many games (and this is clearly my fault as I buy way too many) whereas my friends are rather "conservative" and tend to revert to "true and tested" games (such as Race, 7 wonders..) that we have played over and over, so that I know a game has to make a good impression rather quickly if we are to play it again. And I really want to be able to stick to Dominion for a while...

thanks. I did actually. I knew about remodel but as I went 5/2 I thought opening with Mine would be ok. I think my mistake though was not getting a remodel on turn 4 and getting a smithy instead.

I hope it is readable.

I wonder where I went wrong. I opened 5/2 (I am lillumultipass) and as there isn't a lot of trashing cards, I took Mine. It seems that it is not a very good card in general, but here it seemed good to me to trash coppers.
My opponent went the remodel way and it is probably better. My idea was to get a standard Village-smithy Engine, then add markets all the while changing coppers into silver.
But, I think I did not get enough villages as I had quite a few terminal collisions.

what do you think ?
thanks !

Hi everyone,

I introduced my friends to Dominion last night, playing a 3-player game with the 1st game setup.
At the end, my friends were not enthralled with the game (they were not against it either), saying that it was a bit long for what it is, a bit monotonous and mechanical, with low interaction and limited theme.

We discussed a bit and we agreed to try other kingdoms, probably next week, maybe adding Intrigue in.

Hence, what kingdom would you recommend to experienced card games players (including deck builders) that would have interesting combos but maybe also that could be conducive to different strategies (indeed, they felt that we were more or less all doing the same thing in the 1st game setup...I did not want to try a 'Big money' strategy because I knew they proabbly would not have been able to counter it) ?

thanks !

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Questions from newish player
« on: September 02, 2019, 05:03:18 am »
thanks everyone for the insightful comments/remarks.
I have caved in in ordered quite a few (a lot actually :-) expansions as well as some seem hard to find sometimes.

I am still torn on 2 things : sleeving or not and the organization.

As to the latter, I have also bought a few cardboard BCW box and I think I will store the cards vertically in them, by expansion and then alphabetically. I don't want to mix everything (at least for now) for 2 reasons : (i) at first, I want to mostly combine 2-3 expansions that (ii) will go in a "traval box" with all the necessary material to play up to 3 players;
Do you use dividers BTW ? I have a laminator but printing, cutting and laminating about 300 cards will be a long and tedious process...

As to sleeving, I usually do sleeve my card games, but here it seems quite inefficient to sleeve everything.
Hence, I am considering sleeving all starting cards for 3 players and them giving everyone about 30 sleeves to sleeve acquired cards in-game.
Then, I see 2 options : (i) either everyone unsleeve at the end of the game or (ii) we leave it as is, so that cards that are used the most will remain sleeved and the others will still be unsleeved. As such, the game will be sleeved progressively.
What do you think ?

Dominion General Discussion / Questions from newish player
« on: August 26, 2019, 05:25:45 am »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to decide between splurging on Mystic vale or Dominion. I have been looking at Dominion for some time, but never did buy it (I am a completionnist and I knew that, were I to start investing in it I would get most expansions…). In the meantime, I tried a lot of deckbuilders (ascension, Star Realms, Puzzle Strike, Mystic Vale, Shards of infinity), and, as a former CCG player, this is a kind of games that really appeals to me. Still, most of them are not that deep. Obviously, I did not expect Mage Knight-like depth (a great game with deck-building elements) but still, “river-like” games such as Ascension or Star Realms are by nature quite chaotic.

Mystic Vale seemed, to me, a bit more original with the card crafing mechanics (which I love) and the use of both vales and different levels of advancements that seems to limit the chaos and increase decision space. I have mainly played the base game and the 1st expansion with the app. Also, it seems that it plays well multiplayer (I usually have 2 or 3-player sessions) and possibly solo (for training purposes), playing 2-handed as there is basically no hidden information.

As to Dominion, it has recently came to my attention anew. I like the “market” mechanics, the simplicity of the core system but the fact that it can be (and has been)  complexified with expansions. Hence, it seems that with the right amount of expansions the game is first and foremost a game of skill but one that can be played in something like 30' with 2 players, allowing for multiple games in an evening (with the same market to try different strategies, or changing a few cards at a time).

Also, and related to that, I particularly like the fact that there are extensive discussions/articles about cards, combos and strategies, something that I usually miss from my CCG days. It will never have MK's level of depth but I think this is a game that rewards skill and allows one to improve one's skill by "studying" the game right ?

I have a few questions though :

- What articles/discussions would you recommend for someone wanting to study the base game ? I already found some videos, but I am more of a "reading" kind of person generally as I tend to "retain" more of what I read than what I watch.

- how well does it play with 3 players (does it become too long and uninteractive ?) ?

- when you have multiple expansions, do you usually mix everything or combine just a few expansions that tend to mix well (I recall reading something along those lines, such as I think, Properity (or Adventures) and Empires) or do you stick for a while with just the expansion. I fear that when miing too many expansions some effects might get diluted.

- related to that, how do you store/sort the game ? I probably intend to buy a big cardboard box (something like that : https://www.bcwsupplies.com/card-game-box-black-white). Have you sleeved all your cards btw ? It makes for a lot of sleeving ! As to sorting, would sorting by expansion then alphabetically work ? With maybe dividers just for the different expansions and maybe the "common" cards. My idea would be to also have a kind of smaller "travel box" holding the common cards and enough cards to do a few different markets when I play at my friends'.

Any comments/remarks/suggestions are appreciated.
thanks !
