Hey, I was the guy who came in 2nd during the tournament. I have to agree that it was really fantastically run and everyone I met was great! It was nice to see that after not having played dominion since isotropic went down, I still had some abilities. For random sets I think they worked well and we got a mixture of a few different things. I thought getting to choose 5\2 or 3\4 was nice. I'd be interested to see what people think the best strategies for those sets (as 4 player games, with the understanding that your opponents might not buy pirate ships or embassies) would be.

Your 1st place victory was well deserved and I think it was pretty clear you were the best player there. Good luck at gencon!

I did some of these a long time ago and they weren't super popular but I'm bored on the train. Let me know if this is the wrong forum...

Basically I give a clue for a name of a guilds card. Using spoilers, give me the name of the card. These are in hypothetical ascending difficulty

1. Bases his life around a famous 80s band

2. Tamper with

3. My most important gun

4. More manly

5. A hat someone gives you to market their company

I had been told that Goko was shutting down, Iso was going to add DA and Guilds, and DXV was inviting all of us over to his house for a barbeque.

Did no one else get that invite? =\

I voted 0/1/2, I'm not a computer programmer or anything like that, that's just what I've always called them. 0 piles are gone, 1 pile is gone, 2 piles are gone. I don't think it's suspicious, I just think there's two very valid ways of looking at it and some people use one way and some people use the other.

How much worse/harder to pull off is a Double tactician board without Vault/Secret Chamber/Black Market than with one of those? It seems to me that it can't really be a perfect double tact board without one.

It's lovely. Always eager to learn new words in foreign languages.

My favorite spanish word is espeluznante - meaning spooky

This is such a weird board because generally buying villages/cities/woodcutters for the main purpose of upgrading cities would be an absolutely terrible idea but here, it seems far and away the best one.

10
You buy so many terminals early - 6 out of your first 7 turns (turn #7 including the outpost turn) are terminal buys. That's too many terminals. And they don't do anything cohesive, you clearly don't really have a strategy. You want to have a general overall strategy before beginning. You said you bought an ambassador because you didn't want to lose the ambassador war, which is generally true - but why? What were you going to do with your thinner deck? These are the things you need to start thinking about very early on (or before) the game.

If you look at the board, like others mentioned, you'll notice that with ambassador, horse traders, etc., this is a great board for Gardens. You want to recognize this right away, recognize the cards that will help you on your quest for a good Gardens deck, and go from there. Instead, you just sort of buy different cards and meander your way through until you realize that Gardens might be a good idea.

11
Ah, Workshop/Workshop opening seems like a good idea. Thanks, DG.

So so far, regardless of whether I chapel or not, whenever I buy 1 margrave I seem to finish 2 - 5 turns faster than when I buy 2 margraves. (I'm just going completely straight BM otherwise, no duchies or anything)

Is there any simulation or anything to back this up?

Also, adding a chapel in so far hasn't really negatively affected anything.

I know I should have prioritized Silk Roads over Islands more. My original thinking was "well i can put aside other cards with the island and it'll free things up more". I got to about turn 5 before I realized how dumb that was. Other than that, what else could I have done? He had an extra Workshop, but I never really had another turn where I hit 3 like he did. He also had a couple extra estates that really boosted him up. Should I have gotten a silver, or an extra workshop? Or did my couple of turns of having 1 money just kill me?

From my very limited interaction with Spaniards, my suggestion if you want to make friends is to bring peanut butter and bread with you and offer to make sandwiches for people you meet. Every Spaniard I've ever met goes crazy over peanut butter. (n = 3)

Vault/BM on a board with Margraves? I'm not the best player but that doesn't seem like a strong choice.

A game where WW (potentially?) plays his coppers one at a time to hide how many he has:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130119-142322-b8b9c39b.html

(maybe? I have no idea)

18
Someone else's least favorite card that other people seem to like:

I find council room so distasteful!
Forge!!!: why?
I couldn't bare the though of giving you cards
 for free?!
but, sadly, sometimes council room will win
as it has today
Forge!!!: often times, in fact
 what a mighty triumph!
Forge!!!: it is a good card
 nah
 worst card

I've never heard of Council Room called "distasteful" before. And shockingly, playing an engine centered around Library isn't a great idea against an opponent playing 2/3 council rooms per turn.

Help! / Re: So... I don't actually want to trash here?
« on: January 25, 2013, 04:26:50 pm »
Yeah...as Ddubois said, the mint isn't the greatest thing, but it's definitely not what kills you.

At turn 11, you have one village, one Wharf, and THREE Goons. What are you going to do with all those goons? You're going to have a tough time playing more than one at a time because you only have one village and one wharf. And if you play the wharf you're gonna have a tough time playing the goons.

Then you buy three more wharves that you still aren't going to get to play, because you only have one village. So you have 7 terminals and only one village. That is not a good ratio. You needed more villages, a lot more.

You should have also prioritized wharf over goons. Getting a goons early is nice because it hurts your opponent, but Goons are not what make engines go, they are the end point of an already working engine. So you want an engine that is decently already up and running (Mining Village/Wharf in this case) before you start adding a decent amount of Goons.

Some parts of WW's engine article that I liked: "The biggest thing about playing the engine is to get the engine up and running first, before worrying about other things.  This means not focusing on Treasure — you will need a little amount of money to get this going but not all that much. And then just focus very very hard on getting the cycling up to speed before worrying too much about other things. You often will want to pick up one attack early on to slow your opponent down, and at some point you may start to get hampered in your ability to buy more components because you can’t generate enough buying power – this should be your cue to get more payload; usually, you want to prioritize a nice $5 (or even a $4 or a $3) engine piece over Gold, unless you really need extra money."

"As for Villages vs terminals, you generally want to get the a terminal before you get a Village to support it, while you are building up, though at some point you will switch over to over-villaging in order to make sure your initial hand can get off the ground."

I don't know how well you're going to remember anything specifically from this game if you don't already have the basic framework of strategy and card knowledge. Play around with the cards some more and perhaps read through Qvist's power rankings of cards? Knowing which cards are generally "good" and which are generally "bad" can really help speed up your progress. It did for me, anyways.

I don't think Contraband is a GREAT card, but I like it a lot and I think it's underrated. It has definite uses in some engines and alt VP games

Dear as if,

I'm sorry I opened 2/5 on an Embassy/Tunnel board with nothing else going for it, bought a second Embassy turn 4 and never had them collide the entire game. You had literally 0 chance.

24
The only other cards I buy are 1 Masquerade, 1 Shanty Town, 1 Throne Room, a pointless two point Harem and some Silver.
FTFY

edit: interesting way to play it though, I never really thought about chopping my silvers into Governors.

Same, and I just (5 minutes ago) played a game I won where I turned some silvers into Governors. Thanks, Robz.

Help! / How the HECK did I manage to tie this game?
« on: January 23, 2013, 10:31:38 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/23/game-20130123-072618-efdd5a72.html

Pretty much by turn 4 I had given up, I got a hearty chuckle out of my turn 12 double colony buy, laughed when I got the "lead" on turn 13, was very confused by his turn 14 purchase, and then managed to tie (and honestly was unlucky I didn't win) on turn 15.

I understand a lot of what he did wrong: not continuing to ramp up with coppersmiths, playing a very poor end game, etc., but what I don't know is what I did right. Did I just get incredibly lucky? Are platinums just that good?
