Finally finished all the Shrines AND all the light roots in the Depths. I'm also now an official Gleeok slayer. I eat Gleeoks for breakfast.

Overall, I think the temples are disappointing. They all have the same basic premise, the looks are one-note, and they're still way less intricately laid out and complex to navigate than the dungeons in OoT, e.g., which came out 25 years ago (and which had twice as many of them). I don't even think they're really any improvement on the Divine Beasts, which was a pretty low bar to clear, but which at least had the interesting puzzle box mechanic.

I agree with this. I've recently replayed Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, which both featured significantly more compelling dungeons in terms of layout, puzzle design, theme, fights, etc. I was really hoping Tears of the Kingdom would improve upon Breath of the Wild by reviving those sorts of dungeons, but no.

I'd say I like the Thunder Temple and the Fire Temple a little better than any of the Divine Beasts, the Wind Temple is about equal, and the Water Temple is worse. Overall, not great.

The Construct Factory hints at what a proper dungeon could have been like...

I was bored at looking through some of the older mafia games, which took place 10 years ago! Doesn't seem like it's been that long.

I’m playing! I am overwhelmed by the bigness of the world.

I was initially pretty annoyed to see Shrines return, but it does seem like the game is a little more linear—or at least has like more of a discernible plot to advance if you take a certain path—so now I’m less annoyed. Breath of the wild was vast but weirdly empty; this world is brimming with interesting stuff to do.

I mostly like the various abilities; I am not sold on Fuse, which is sort of unintuitive to me. You can’t fuse directly from your inventory, it seems? Except for arrows? Hmm.

Also... hi, everybody! It's been awhile. I had to reset/update my computer or something, and it logged me out of the Forums, and then I didn't sign back in for a while. But I miss you all! I think my two in-person D&D groups have largely consumed the excess time I had for mafia and forum stuff, though I'm still playing a good amount of Dominion.

Was Robz’s appearance on John Oliver’s show noted yet?
Which episode?

Very cool, my two favorites!

Crime Reporting — it was on last week and is on YouTube!

As I noted here, I was not super happy about it... it was clipped/framed in such a way as to make me sound pretty pro-police, when I'm actually very in favor of criminal justice reform. Oh well!

We’ve come a long way. Given Bauble, it’s amazing we would pay 5 for Royal Seal.

Who knew the right cost for Royal Seal was $2?

Combos With Scout (RIP)

Underling: Scout's re-ordering ability here is key, because after Scout draws all your starting Estates, you might still have some Coppers (maybe a Silver or two) on top of your deck before the Underling. Now you can move the Underling to the top of your deck. Scout essentially does you a "favor" here. So it's not just a combo, it's a thematic combo.

Bauble: Forms an important three card combo with Scout and Villa. First, you buy a Victory card, then you top deck it with Bauble, then you buy Villa (make sure you chose the extra buy and top-decking options) to return to your action phase, then you play Scout and draw that victory card you just bought. And Bauble is still in play if you want to do this again with an additional Scout.

Broker: Competes with Scout at the same price, so you'll typically forgo this card until the Scout pile runs out.

Hunter: This can really help you get those Scouts out of your deck and into your hand, but you'll end up discarding excess Scouts so it's a bit of a wash.

Skirmisher: Scout is a good defense against an opponent's Skirmisher. Remember: Skirmisher can't make you discard a Scout.

With the Allies, I'm not sure. My sense is they will speed up the game, so we'll have to see how the infamous "Scout Rush" plays out.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Seaside 2E Announced
« on: January 31, 2022, 03:36:37 pm »
I'm there for you guys with the tough answers.

Seaside:

The biggest thing here is, the set has two cards that hand out junk that cost less than $5. Cards like that tend to dominate games, since people buy them turns 1-2 and start playing them fast, so it's bad to have two of them in one set, even though when they're in the same game the one defends against the other. I just don't want heavy-Seaside games to always have one of those cards. So either Ambassador or Sea Hag should be a more powerful card for $5. Ambassador looks more innocent so probably I would change Sea Hag.

Lookout is the dud of the set. The problem is, some people are terrified of trashing a good card with it. At the same time trashing bad cards looks less exciting to some players. And as a trasher it's not exceptional. So the overall package is a card that a lot of players don't want, but that some experienced players realize is okay but not special. I could instead have some other card more people liked.

Originally the set did not have tokens. Embargo put itself on a pile; Pirate Ship kept one treasure per attack and counted them; Pirate Ship and Native Village did have mats, but they were card-sized (when that changed I got to add Haven back in). If I had known the set would have counters, I would have tried to get more use out of them, just as I made two more VP token cards to go with Monument.

Outpost could be simpler. Ideally it would have you discard 2 at the start of your next turn, rather than having the wonky Clean-up-modifying effect it has. There was not enough time between when I realized that and when the card had to be finalized.

Again some people complain about various other cards but I am having none of it. Pirate Ship is weak but I don't think it should be stronger. I like Treasure Map as is. Fishing Village and Wharf are strong engine-enablers and well we are talking good times there. Pearl Diver and Navigator are not prized, but they look reasonable to me, and as I have said many times, if I made all cards better by making them maximally complex, the game would have no players. Explorer is fine, why do people even complain about Explorer. They can't all be the best $5 ever.

Based on this, I think we can confidently predict Sea Hag and Lookout are dead. Navigator and Pirate Ship seem likely, too. After that I'd guess Pearl Diver and Treasure Map.

Explorer is fine, why do people even complain about Explorer. They can't all be the best $5 ever.

We're holding you to that, Donald!

Just got to play this combo today, against an opponent who had no idea what I was doing. Had a few hiccups—Enchantresss attack was pretty annoying—and I played a Mad Man too fast, but it came together and I won. So satisfying!

Oh no! Shoot, there are some things I definitely want to save. My neigbhorhood with Galz in Modern Comm. The scum QT from the more recent Marvel game where scola dominated, those immediately come to mind.

What's new?

Not a lot with me. I got a breakthrough covid case, but luckily I felt better after like just one day.

Here I am talking about it on CNN: https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/2021/08/01/robby-soave-on-his-own-breakthrough-covid-case.cnn

As a consequence, I've been quarantining by myself and spending a LOT more time online. I browsed a ton of old forum posts. Hi everybody!

How've you been?

I read that article and thought about DMing you but decided it was weird.

Not weird at all!
