So I work email tech support for a company. I got an email from isotropic, and I was like, huh I know who the admin for this web host is.

Then I realized that it was DougZ. I was very amused, and I hope I managed to resolve his problem earlier.

If there are 18 shelters, then that's 1 each for a 6 player game (assuming that you want to leave 12 for the normal pile).

Also, I'm thinking Rats is going to be a trap card without another trasher present, but that it will be useful with another trasher.

Good point, maybe we can get theory to impose a post limit until everyone is back to even again.

Bridge is certainly not an overpowered 4$.  Costing it at 5 sounds like a terrible idea.

Agreed, all it would do is stop some of the bridge strategies, like NV Bridge would be much worse.

+1 action turns a card into a completely different type of card. Check out Rinkwork's Fan Card Creation Guide for more on this.

For one thing, which hand would you rather draw, 5 Highways or 5 Bridges? That question alone says a lot. It means that you can't just buy Bridges. At some point, you are risking getting screwed with draws. You need Villages (or TR/KC) as well, and you need to carefully balance the amount of each to make sure you have enough actions to play those Bridges.

Then just look at all the other examples out there where being a non-terminal changes everything:

Laboratory vs Moat: the +1 action changes a $2 card to a $5 AND removes the reaction.
Laboratory vs Smithy: the +1 action changes a $4 to a $5 AND draws 1 less card.
Laboratory vs Wharf: the +1 action is worth +buy now and next turn AND +2 cards next turn.
Familiar vs Witch: the +1 action changes a $5 to a $2P AND draws 1 less card.
Woodcutter vs Festival: the +2 actions changes a $3 to a $5.

That should be $3P not $2P, sadly.

Take a minute to review your post. Where did it make any reference to Iso and DougZ? You brought up exactly 2 entities - RGG and Donald X. - in the paragraph preceding the quoted statement; how was I supposed to infer that this was a reference to Iso and DougZ?

I think we've established a clear difference in a certain other thread between being critical and being malicious. The only thing preventing people from presenting their honest opinions is the censure that they receive for being ostensibly untactful. But seriously - something's quite not right here regarding the release of the official app, and it should be known, preferably in a nice, civilized manner.

Debatably the point is that Donald X. and DougZ are the same person. The hints have been there all along. After all, Dominion also begins with a 'D' as does developer. Developer describes the postion that DougZ and Donald X. both do. If we want to determine who develops Dominion then we need to look for a developer whose name begins with D.


Now that I've realized this, if the developer's name actually begins with D, I'm going to sell all of my dominion, buy a tin foil hat, and move to Tibet.

Let the record show that NeoProcrustes was in fact an account created just to ask that one question, almost as if the person who made the first thread thought that pretending his scenario had actually happened would get him a better response. Which is what I thought at the time so I guess I am just defending my response to DdJ here. If you hang around on forums for years, you will find that accusing someone of making a new account to post something is more common than people actually doing it, but still, it does happen.

No need to defend your response, I thought it was hilarious.

Glancing at the title, my thought was that this thread was going to be about "Why does a game of Dominion end specifically when the Provinces are all bought?  Why can't we just play forever and ever and ever and ever and..."  Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised, but don't actually have anything of value to contribute to the conversation.

This reminds me of a Donald quote. People were debating about what to do in a stalemate (a situation where both players would put themselves at a disadvantage if they were to buy another card, so no one buys anything). They were complaining that Dominion didn't have an official rule to deal with this situation, and Donald said that what you should do in that case was play forever until one of the players starves to death. ;D

Do you know where the quote for that is?

You've just described two of my favourite Dominion Uppers!

A closely lost match usually means a match that was against an opponent that was well suited to my skill level. If I win by  a large margin, its usually a little disappointing as my opponnent's skill level would have meant that I might as well have being solitaire. If I lose by a large margin, its usually because I'm trying something new and unconventional and it goes belly up, or I'm so tired that my judgment fails. But if its close, that normally means I've played well, my opponent has played well, and the game has come down to a test of brinksmanship and fortune. That suits me fine!

Well, it depends on the game. Sometimes a hard fought battle is lots of fun, but if it was a torturer pin or something and then I lose by a turn that's another matter. I will also say, that even if it is a dominion downer, that doesn't exclude having fun. I was playing a RL game where all but one person drew CCPEE in a familiars game, and the person who didn't proceeded to destroy everyone, but it was still fun.

As for beating higher ranked players, I love it! I've not yet played a higher ranked player and though that I won because their skill was lacking. THAT would be disappointing, sure. Each time I've beaten someone of higher rank its been because I've managed to play to or beyond their high level, or because I've had recognisable good fortune.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy beating higher ranking players, it's just when they clearly are embarking on some bizarre strategy and I don't know if I won through luck, or having a better strategy, I much prefer to understand what both sides were doing at the end of the game.

There could be some strange stuff going on in this set but tactician + secret chamber can also bring home the silk roads against a pirate.

Well if you can pull it off, Tactician gives you 10 cards, and two actions and buys, you can secret chamber 7 cards leaving you 2, one being a tactician and the other discard fodder giving you enough for silk road + great hall, or duchy + estate, or Tactician + secret chamber as your two buys.

I was just re-reading Donald X.'s Bible for Intrigue, and read the conspirator entree:

The broken card had its admirers. Two of Valerie & Dale's playtesters wrote essays defending the card. But the card was often unplayable and then sometimes dominated. So some games it made worse by being a dead card, and some games it made worse by making other cards dead. Now what it did was cool, and it's fun to sometimes get turns where you make 50+ coins, which is how it got defended. It's fun to do something you don't often get to do. But it just didn't make sense to put out such a messed up card. I'll try to fix it up for a later set and well that's why I'm not telling you what it did. There was no time to fix it up when I came to my senses though. So instead it got replaced. With this card. I like it.

Did we ever find out what the broken card was?

I'd like to recommend Bang the Bullet as a game for introducing people to board games, it's nice, simple and quick. I would say that quick is possibly the most important of these 3 items.

Not really in the spirit of the thread, but accepting a game that has minions or a torturer/village engine without noticing. I just hate minions so much.

You should play in veto mode then, that's one of the reasons it's there for.

I leave it on don't care, but I feel like if I make it so I always play in veto mode, I'll miss being able to play against a decent population of people on the site.

Yeah, one of my peeves is people who sit in auto-match and decline matches.  It makes me reluctant to accept any matches from them after that since I can't shake the feeling that they're specializing in a certain combo (or at the very least playing with boards they're strong at) and just waiting till it shows up randomly.  And most of the time I keep getting automatched with them after I decline the second, third, fourth times.

Sometimes I look at a set of cards, and it has Sea Hag and Torturer and all this crap and I go, I'm just not in the mood for this right now. Given that the overall goal is enjoyment, I feel like this is fair. I'm not trying to get cards I'll be better at, I'm just trying to play a game that I won't suffer through.

Although it bothers me from time to time when someone does this, I'll admit that if I was just torturer lock downed, I'd prefer to play a game without them. I much prefer people who decline games due to a specific card to people who decline games based on their opponent.


I will add two new ones to the list though:

 - Losing when you were second player and would have won on your turn.

 - Not exactly a downer, but : Playing a player who is significantly rated higher than you who does things that you don't understand, and you precede to win. It really bugs me when my opponent is someone I expect to lose to, they do something really bizarre and it doesn't seem to go any where. Were they experimenting, or was I a turn away from being completely crushed? It's the way I felt when I first played people who knew how to use chapel correctly, but we were playing 4 player (in real life) and chapelling into a strategy doesn't work as well if the other 3 players manage to get enough of the provinces first. At least when I play someone who I expect to beat, and they do something odd that doesn't work out I don't wonder what was going on, I just assume they made a mistake. </rant>
