Whenever I loose, I accuse people of hacking, just like I do whenever I play people online.

I forget to topdeck Treasuries, one of my favorite cards.

Dominion Articles / Re: Number of Unique Kingdoms Currently Playable?
« on: October 28, 2017, 09:39:48 am »
Only counting the variety via Kingdom cards (i.e. ignoring Young Witch, Events, Landmarks and all the new stuff from Nocturne) it is 289 choose 10 or 956 quadrillion (9.56 x 10^17) different Kingdoms.
In my opinion this is just a number games though that doesn't capture the variety of Dominion. The base game already had more than 3 million possible Kingdoms yet a lot of these Kingdoms would feel and play identically.

Thar's a good point.  It'd be interesting to know how long it'd take to play all those Kingdoms at 30 minutes per game. I tried to do the math, but I think I might've done it wrong (math has never been one of my strong points :P)

5.45 x 10^13 years, by my count

So one better way to measure "unique" is instead of factoring in all possible cards, just counting the most powerful ones. A kingdom with Tournament and say one or two others engine cards is going to play exactly the same way regardless of the 7-8 other cards available, unless they are also quite strong engine cards. Yes, I know, edge cases, bla bla. Still, as far as "unique" is concerned, looking at only the cards you will buy is important. This still leaves you with a lot of different possibilities. I've played a lot of Dominion, and never really got 2 kingdoms which play the same.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Cultural references in Nocturne

Another kind of cool thing about a lot of the cards is how they are thematic opposites of each other. Werewolf-Faithful Hound, Cursed Village-Blessed Village, Druid-Necromancer etc. Kind of a good-evil kind of thing. I really do like the theme of this set.

So first a disclaimer: I never totally understood how the previous ranking system worked, but for me, it was a big turn off that it took sooooo long to rank all the cards. Is there any way it could be split into more manageable sections? I would be totally on board if it was, but frankly I find it hard to justify spending an unreal amount of time ranking the cards. Maybe instead of rating a bunch of cards against each other, people could just arrange them from least to most powerful.

I realize this would be a big change to the ranking system, I just wanted to throw this out there.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Bonus Preview #5: Necromancer

Okay, so a lot of people are complaining about the art and theme of some of these cards. I think they are fine. The art and card names are sufficiently different from MtG to avoid the trap I've always seen the possibility of Dominion falling into. Also, while this might seem very different from any other set, that is pretty much what we say every time there is a new expansion. I like that this is a sequel to Dark Ages/Alchemy, and I think it aces going for the magic/fantasy theme while remaining distinctly Dominion.

8
Pros- Lots of cool new card types, and the art is pretty great, especially Cursed Village
Cons- How come Werewolf doesn't care about silver?

Just be a man and buy that Province, you know you want to! Death or Glory!

This is good for selective trashing. You get this early, stash away a bunch of coppers, then trash them or Miser them one at a time. Also works like Baker for smoothing.

Dang, these are cool. I like the grey background for Devil's Workshop.

Man, I can't think of what to say about these cards. Dominion Previews are like meeting your crush; you think of what it will be like and what you will say, but when it happens you can't think of anything insightful or clever.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Nocturne Teasers
« on: October 22, 2017, 05:38:13 pm »
German and Russian (and maybe Japanese?) answers were added because those languages are supported on Dominion Online.  Danish is not yet supported, unfortunately. :(

As cool as the quiz was, it's a little sad that teasers this year means "you get to know the names of most of the cards". Previously it was always interesting information dealing with various quantities of different things and slight information actually related to mechanics.

Perhaps Donald thought that he couldn't do that kind of teaser for Nocturne without either giving too much away or not really saying anything at all. Or maybe he didn't have the energy to do that kind of teaser. I trust his motives.

I think it was more that this set had some cool names that he wanted to show off.

Come for the names, stay for the mechanics.

That was incredible! You have a good voice! They should add this to Dominion Online.

14
I like the incredible Balance. I play a lot of other games, and Dominion is amazingly well-balanced. Yeah, some cards are better then others, but no strictly-worse cards.

My goal is to get at least 1 of these. Obviously they won't all follow the horror theme.

Thank you! Any tips for where to start on here for a new forum user?

Welcome to the forums! If you haven't already, the card articles section is pretty great.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How do YOU pick interesting kingdoms?

Sometimes it can be fun to create a kingdom with an obvious strategy, and then a second, less obvious one. Then see which one is better.

When you consider "throne", "king", "crown", "disciple", "procession", "chapel", "bonfire", "farmland", "ironworks", "workshop", and "alms" to be verbs.

When you internally groan when hearing about a country Rebuilding after a disaster.

New verbs are really among the best reasons to start Dominion.

Hey, I've had this idea for years and never see it in an expansion...

EXECUTIONER

Cost : 9

Action, Attack

"Each opponent reveals their hand and must trash one card of your choosing."

Cool, yeah?  Expensive, terminal, and ugly.  :)  Putting it at an above-province cost makes for a hard choice, I think, as when you get to province buying levels, what boards would support a terminal card this aggressive?  And what if you hit this with a king's court?!  Moats and reactions are suddenly immensely more valuable, as are fast strategies to keep opponents from buying this card (and shuffling it through their deck to be played).

I have to agree with Theta. This doesn't really work for everything already mentioned. Warrior and Knight are already kinda hated, this would be a million times worse.

Welcome to the forums!

Dominion Articles / Re: Cartographer vs. Forum
« on: September 25, 2017, 03:12:08 pm »
I think they are both deceptively good. I actually rank Cartographer higher because of how effortlessly it combos, especially with some seriously strong cards (Cartographer/Scrying Pool is brutal).

Forum is definitely better, because you get the benefit immediately. With Cartographer, you have to wait until you draw those cards before you get the benefit.

True, but isn't a lot of Dominion about delayed gratification? Setting your next hand is a really strong effect, worth about .

How did you arrive at that cost?

Not disagreeing, but genuinely curious.

The first comparison that comes to mind is Scouting Party. Granted, event costs aren't directly applicable to card costs, and Scouting Party is weaker, but it only costs . Is Cartographer's effect that much better?

I figured since Cartographer is a cantrip with the effect, and a cantrip is basically free, the sorting should be worth or .

It is also quite a bit better then Scouting Party. Apart from the fact that it is more flexible, it sorts during your Action phase, making it invaluable for combo setup.

This is the card picker I use: http://inprogressgaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/dominion_picker140.html
I find it to be far and away the best. Play around with this a bit and see if you get something cool.
