Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion and Intrigue second editions

Some thoughts on the second edition of Intrigue,  Played a game with the following kingdom: Expand, Wharf, Replace, Patrol, Workers Village, Villa, Secret Passage, Sacrifice, Smugglers, and some other card I don't remember.
Obvious engine. I opened Sacrifice and Smugglers and then got a five copper hand in the first reshuffle. Easy transition into a wharf+engine. My payload: Replace.
Holy cow Replace is AWESOME! Not only could I transfer Smuggled Silver into wharves (actually I think I used it to get a village onto my deck to continue drawing) but when I started to pull ahead with cycling I used replace to turns Golds into Province and Province into Province, all the while cursing my opponent.

We all know that Remodel Province to Province is great to get a clock on the game, but Replace makes it so much better because it gives you one more VP ahead due to the cursing. Big fan.

Patrol didn't see play b/c Wharf was available, Secret Passage was OK. It was good to seed next hands with draw or extra villages.

If we're going to talk about strongest card to have T1 just right off the bat, it's Champion. Hands down. No debate required.

Well yeah. It's stupid/broken good.

Before Champion was conceived I would have said Goons.

Oh man! I was just thinking about this yesterday. Orange, we should be besties.

Anywho, to go off of what Seprix has said: Prince can be beaten by ignoring it, and not just in gimmicky Edge Case scenarios. I've never seen Followers lose, but that's b/c I play IRL and crush everyone I know when Tournament is on the board. But I could see it losing to someone that intentionally ignores it.

I'd love to see City Quarter used in a real engine. But every time I saw it come up in our full random games (twice) it was one of three or two other actions and those were not super. So it really hasn't been played all that much in my circles.

No Rebuild? Did I miss something where the meta-game of dominion has shifted away from stupid rebuild crushing games?

Anyway here's mine:
Champion
Donate
Goons
King's Court
Fortune
Ambassador

I haven't played with the following, but from the gripes I've seen about them on the forum and watching games these seem pretty "Greatest" to me.
Mercenary
Cultist
Rebuild

From a Kingdom designers POV, Embargo can be a neat way of nerfing a powerful but monolithic strategy on a board. If there is a fairly strong engine, do you really want to go Rebuild and gain at least 4 Curses? Plus it can also make keeping your strategy secret a while longer useful. I like when it matters if your opponent can't figure out your strategy right away.

This is precisely why I like embargo. Oh Cultist is on the board? I'm going to open double embargo and kill it. (Also, works with any other card that I dislike for producing single card strategies.)

I would vote for replacing nothing, except that this is not allowed.

This.

If I absolutely were forced to cut one, it would be Pearl Diver.

Same. Navigator is a close second, but I've used it in games.

Will the update packs come with new card strips? (The thing in the middle of the box which had the names in alphabetical order.)

Also, when/where can we get these? everything I looked at just had a vague release date.

Dragon
Action Attack
Cost: $7
+$2 or gain a Gold.
You may reveal a Gold from your hand. If you do, each other player with 5 or more cards in hand reveals them and discards a card that you choose.

Clearly Dragon should be a $7 because Dragons like Hoards and Hoard is in Prosperity.  ;)

Here's my attempt:

King's Court
Duke, Stables,
Throne Room, Island
Great Hall, Warehouse
Duchess, Crossroads
Transmute

Essentially you use Transmutes to snatch up Duchies, gaining Duchess in the process as Action food for your transmutes to keep going.
Stables for non-terminal draw and Warehouse for sifting gives you a better chance of colliding your Transmutes with Actions.
Use Transmute on the the Great Halls/Islands to get Gold/Duchies at one swing.
Use TR/KC on the Transmute when you start getting action dense to grab a bunch of duchies at one swing.

The only reason I'd ever want an expansion to an expansion would be if it supplemented the potions, as I find it a really intriguing mechanic in the game that just didn't reach its potential...

I agree. Alchemy 2.0 would be great for an expansion. Heck, you could even reprint Potion so that the expansion can have the currency it needs. I'd gladly sacrifice one set of new cards (10 plus the randomizer = 11 Potions, which is really all you would need for a new stack of Potions) to get a whole slew of new Alchemy cards.

This is a typical love/hate card...This is also the card that broke the "both players can get the same cards" mantra which made me fall in love with Dominion in the first place.

What I've done for my IRL games is make a separate stack of prizes for each player. That way we all get a chance at getting the prizes. This makes a much more fun Tournament game IMO. Otherwise I would hate this card due to the games I've played where someone gets the only source of Cursing or +Buy.

I typically just end up getting Trusty Steed before the other prizes as I like to keep my engine going, and if I'm lucky I can swing back around to another Tournament and get my Province back in my hand.

One memorable game I had was where I was using Menagerie as draw and needed one more Kingdom treasure to ensure hitting $8. Ergo, I picked up Diadem before the other ones.

Oh man, Alt VP cards are my favorite kingdom cards to play with...and now there are CASTLES!!! I am so pumped! This clinches the expansion for me. I am stoked.

Cannot wait to add Castles to my Alt VP custom kingdoms.

Wolf's Den also makes Fairgrounds a lot harder.

And going for Knights a terrible idea. (cue edge-casing).

BTW, I really like the art of Wolf's Den.

I am a HUGE fan of Keep. Big Money just got a big boost in viability.

I played an IRL game with one of my friends with Harvest and Tunnel on the board. So naturally I thought "Harvest sucks, I'm going for it." My friend decided to mirror me. Harvest hit $4 for every single play, except for twice it hit $3. The game was over so fast. So now Harvest has special place in my heart for being a big pile of $$ making power.  ;)

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Creating Dominion

The reason why I think that exactly one rotating free card (or possibly 2 or 3, but probably just one would be best) is good is not that it would provide more variety, but that it would be super cool. People could look forward to see which card is going to be in the free card rotation next week, then they could have discussions with their friends like "what do you think about this week's card of the week?" and in general, it would make them more excited about the game. As it turns out, people are more likely to pay you when they feel like they have gotten a lot from you for free first, and little things like this can contribute far more greatly towards that feeling than it contributes towards the feeling that they're already getting enough even without paying.

That's actually a really good reason. Put me on the "Rotating Free Cards!" train in the future  ;D.

Hmmm.  Going that route, I think the cards looked at should meet two of three qualities:
1) Simple
2) Representative of its set
3) Fun/interesting

If a card is really representative, and really fun (maybe, say, Goons?) simplicity could matter a little less.

Emphasis mine: Goons is the least fun card (besides Rebuild) IMO. You either play Goons or lose. Booooooorrrriiiinnnnggggg.

If paying people can only be matched against other paying players...that doesn't sound great. I mean, yeah I only want to play competent people and competent players are more likely to be invested in the game (and thus buy it) but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are the only good players. And some of us who would pay aren't that great (IE: me).

Man, why do you guys think it's necessary to have a rotating set of free cards? Base only should give plenty of variety of games to get people interested enough in shelling out a few dollars to play with more. It sounds like just an incentive to never pay Shuffle iT. And if they allow free players to play against people who own sets, then that's variety right there.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: When did you start playing Dominion
« on: April 15, 2016, 12:28:28 pm »
My brother in law is really into board games (he always has a new one every time I see him) and had his friends over with Intrigue one night.
My first games were 6 player and I thought it was fantastic. It played so fast! (Compared to other card games with friends where turns took 20 min each). I don't remember my first game, but the second game I got a double province turn using tribute as the main way to get money...and I was hooked!

I found the forums just after Iso went down (which was sad).

$3/month ($36 a year, probably cheaper if you buy in bulk) online doesn't sound that bad to me. Why are so many people complaining?
Some of us are unemployed.  :(

Not to be a dick or anything...but go mow your neighbor's lawn for $9. You have three months right there. Scraping $3 together in 28 days sounds trivially easy to me. Even my broke-ass, no job, high schooler memories had a change jar that had more than $3 in it.

Tournaments were mentioned - I think an excellent prize would be a month or two of free subscription.

I spent a while trying to figure out tournaments online, how to set up a system where you could try to generate revenue primarily through tournament entry fees. The problem is prizes, and awarding free subscriptions for winning might be too close to straight up money for money, which would be a mess legally.

Ew no fuck that.  Fuck entry fees.  Anyone who wants to play should be able to.  We'll all already be paying for the game anyway.
Yeah fuck entry fees for tournaments. That's a great way to make sure casual people never even bother with tournament formats.

Fantastic news! Apparently I'm one of the few people who thinks that $3 a month is dirt cheap. Holy cow is that cheap. I for one can go with one less 30 oz soda or bag of cookies a month to play one of my favorite games.  (Think of it this way...put a quarter away every week till this comes out...then you'll have four months of free dominion).

Question 1: Will there be a "base game only" free online version like the current MF model? I probably wouldn't have even tried Dominion Online if that wasn't free.
Question 2: Will those with half expansions still get to experience all the expansions if paired up with someone who bought the whole package? If so, that is great!
