oh man, 10 years! isotropic really was wonderful. i too have had the itch to play again over the years but it never lasts - probably for the better. there were way too many late nights of 'well just one more game!'

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: The Dominion online 2017 thread
« on: January 02, 2017, 08:36:13 pm »
Well, that's the thing, though. The hardcore community—for the most part—views Dominion like chess. And now we have an implementation by and for that community alone, which is likely going to alienate everybody else. Subscriptions are probably the biggest symptom here, but mid-turn resignation is another one.    I would prefer isotropic  -style where you can only resign at the start of your turn. I'd forgotten about that, but it sure sounds nice.

two bot games attempted, two games which froze midturn and couldn't be saved.

i miss the good ol days.

edit: ok attempt 3 went a bit smoother. hoping for the best!

At one point I considered clearing out accounts that hadn't been logged into for like 2+ years, but it wouldn't have made much impact on the server.  I don't think I'll do this, sorry.

thanks theory!

some of our accounts are only mostly dead.

i don't post as much these days but i've gotten really into hiking. i've already logged >150 miles on trails in 2015. i do a tiny amount of climbing as part of that but i don't care for it. running and softball get me outside a lot too.

I dig the Bureaucrat card because I'm a bureaucrat IRL.

when push comes to shove you've got to do what you love.

Grit and heart count a lot towards success. A top tier team playing at 80 per cent will have a hard time against a lower-ranked team playing at 110 per cent. This is what keeps national elimination tournaments interesting. In the most recent German DFB Pokal tournament, 3 out of 32 games were won by the team playing 2 leages below the losing team.

sorry but that really doesn't mean much when it comes to 'grit' and 'heart'. top level teams rarely play their strongest side in their domestic cups until quite near the end, especially when facing lower tier teams. even then the true talent level differences between the teams and the manager's tactics probably allows for a small percent of lower tier teams to win their matches anyway.

Is there any other reason for limiting the amount of substitutions than stopping excessive substitutions to kill time off the clock when leading? Because if not, you could also change to unlimited subs but only during these breaks, so we'd see higher quality of play and again, more tactical maneuvering and adjustments from coaches.

i personally don't think you would see a higher quality of play at all, and there is a good chance the play will get worse. it is actually a common criticism of the american soccer system, specifically in the college level. you have almost unlimited subs which tends to lead to a focus on fresher/faster legs. as a result the play tends to be more direct and a bit faster, with lots of long balls and balls over the top which in turn leads to less of a focus on technical abilities. you might also see more physical and dangerous play, as a yellow card means less when players can be subbed off with less impact.

And then this is an entirely different conversation than Suarez biting someone, which is flat-out unacceptable and should be punished by much more than 2 matches.

what the proper length of the ban should be is actually a pretty interesting discussion in itself. personally i can understand and agree with the justification for both a standard 2 match ban as well as the heavy 2 year ban. on the one hand it is violent behavior with no apparent instigation and he has a past record of biting (as well as some other dirty play) so he should receive heavy punishment. on the other hand, all three bites combined have probably caused less physical damage than say the yellow card tackle suarez received from mirallas earlier this year so a 2 match ban for violent play could suffice. biting is just such a weird behavior that you don't have a solid precedent for it.

The mechanics of Dominion require a lot of explanation up top, though they lack the type of premium-cable nudity that so elegantly spices up Westerosi exposition.

that sounds to me like the author is calling for all you video makers and streamers to up your game a bit.

I mean what if the goalie was out of the net, the ball is heading towards the goal, it's 100% certain to go in, and a fan runs on the field and kicks the ball away?  Do you award the goal?

what about if a beachball on the field deflects an easy shot right at the keeper into the goal? do you still award the goal?

Greatexpectations, you reading this thread?

"until recently he was a dirty player"
I would argue he is still a dirty player, he just hasnt done anything for the last three months as bad as this.

if he hasn't done it for 20 matches then does he still deserve the reputation? what has he done this season that is at all questionable? he has even been on the receiving end of challenges (looking at you mirallas) that could have been red cards and he did not retaliate in any way. he got blasted by rodgers and the ownership this summer (and deservedly so) and has been a different player since then.

Hows the new changed Suarez doing these days?
Once a scumbag....always a scumbag

of course i am reading this thread! obviously what he did was disgraceful, but he was inarguably well behaved all season at liverpool. it sure looked like he had turned a corner but hey i guess i was wrong.

You still buy the Wharf though. Province turn 7 is meh.

i thought about it a bit during the game but i disagreed. i can't find the log but i believe i had just shuffled and had two turns before reshuffling again. i figured i still had a decent chance of hitting at least 1 wharf before the next shuffle, so to me the province was better than the extra wharf. if i had passed then at best my first province could have come turn 10. either way its a bit of a suboptimal situation, of course.

i just had an impressive one, though not quite what i was hoping for. no attacks, wharf, weak villages, and lots of trashing. was going to play a pretty straight wharf/BM and this happened:
T1: 3 copper, 2 estates - buy silver
T2: 4 copper, 1 estate - buy silver
T3: 1 silver, 2 copper, 2 estates - buy silver
T4: 4 copper, 1 estate - buy silver
T5: 1 silver, 2 copper, 2 estate - buy silver
T6: 4 copper, 1 estate - buy silver
T7: 4 silver, 1 copper - buy province
T8: 1 silver, 2 copper, 1 estate - buy silver

8 turns with 5+ once is not how you hope a wharf/BM game will go.

Watching England - Uruguay replay now.  I forgot just how likeable a team Uruguay was.  Heroic Suarez leading them.

?

I hope they crash and burn against Italy.

aww i hope not. i think we both know that suarez is going to go ahead and score a wonderful goal and have something controversial happen. him and balotelli on the pitch at the same time is basically a journalist's dreams come true.

17
suarez is so good. feel bad for stevie g though.

But... I want to stand over non-readers' heads and shout "gotcha" when that sick reveal happens. And that's all I care about.

well sure, to an extent most readers do (myself included) and i understand that. i just think that in this example there really isn't much value in the events beyond the 'gotcha'. personally it was one of the things i figured would get written out of the show for simplicity's sake.

I was satisfied with everything, except I wanted some Lady Stoneheart.

i see this sort of sentiment all over the place and i simply don't understand it. personally i have zero interest in her and i'd have greatly preferred if her 'return' never happened. it cheapens the red wedding and doesn't add anything constructive to the story that could not have been handled by existing characters.

as it relates to the show, it just strikes me as another 'gotcha' moment for book readers to hold over tv viewers heads.

too bad i didn't go with this for the bracket challenge!

well said, and you covered just about everything i wanted to mention. for now the only thing i would add is that while playtesting we would often purposefully choose divergent strategies to get a feel for the competitiveness and/or challenge of playing different strategies. this was done even if we both felt a certain strategy might be stronger coming in.

Polk has done a fantastic job of summing things up, but I figured I should throw in some comments for the spreadsheet.
  • Unfortunately, the public spreadsheet is not easily editable or sortable as is. There was data in the spreadsheet that we did not want shared as well as a lot of data and formulas extraneous for the average forum member. It would have been a bit of work to clean up the spreadsheet to be presentable so we will start off sharing this. If there is a strong desire for the full spreadsheet I can provide it, but it might take some time to get back to you. Beyond that, I will try my best to meet any requests for more detailed/additional information.
  • There are sheets dedicated to all entries (full detailed and simple versions), the candidates we playtested, and the kingdoms chosen for the finals. The sheets contain submitter comments and the Y/M/N votes or playtest comments from the reviewers. Columns to the far right of the sheet contain automated data based on the expansions required and types of cards/combos present.
  • The card frequency stats should be self explanatory but the other stats might be a little more confusing. The 'Total' column sums all of the appearances of that requirement, while 'Distinct' looks only at separate kingdoms featuring the requirment. EG a kingdom with 5 Seaside cards adds 5 to the 'Total' column but only 1 to the 'Distinct' column. The 'Distinct' figure is also listed as a percentage of all entries to give an idea of how often that subset occurred. Card types are typically based on definitions and inclusions on the Wiki. Combinations are just boolean comparisons of these card types to give a feel for how the kingdom might play out.
  • To get into the stats a little bit, the majority of submissions leaned towards strong engines or alt-VP and I think the numbers bear that out. 93% of kingdoms offered some form of +Action and 87% offered +Buy while 72% contained either VP chips or alt-VP cards.

24
I think GE counted Spoils.

yup, my bad there. i updated the spreadsheet accordingly.

It's MF/Goko.

it took me a couple tries to realize that the MF stood for Making Fun and not something else.
