You can take pops' spot, Voltaire.  You have a make-up match with WW to get in by the end.  Let me know.

<a href=http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1374.msg22191#msg22191>An article</a> I wrote about Apothecary some time back.

Chancellor and Shanty Town aren't difficult, just relegate them to non-terminal engines.  Develop and Transmute need serious Kingdom support and are much trickier.  Personally, I feel that Alchemy in general is the toughest expac to master;  I see people misplaying the power cards all the time and also ignoring Philosopher's Stone and Transmute on boards that support them.

There are a lot of engine cards in this game that take some experience to learn to play well, but once you do it isn't too hard.  Minion, Hunting Party, Governor and Scrying Pool, etc.  While having a pretty steep learning curve, once mastered they all behave relatively consistently and the choices they offer become pretty automatic.

Apothecary, yay.  Even now, when many many people have gotten very good at Dominion, I feel really confident that I can outplay most with this card.  So I guess it gets my vote.  Or Horn of Plenty.

But weak in a Colony game.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Fastest solitary game
« on: March 29, 2012, 02:41:26 pm »
I spent hours and hours in solitaire several months ago, and the best I could come up with was 9 turns for the 8 Province megaturn.  My strategy kept shifting, and it was before Hinterlands, so I am sure someone could come up with better.

@ WW: pops is pretty active on this board, I'll try to get a hold of him.

Mustard defeats ^_^_^_^ 6-1 (12-2)

Game 1 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-190742-eb460ded.html

In the first game I opened 5/2 and had some choices.  I decided to grab a Upgrade first, since it is one of the best openers.  There was an option to go BM-Wharf, which my opponent chose to try, but I felt that I could end the game faster with some Labs and some treasure.  I picked up Chancellor rather early, which surprised my opponent.  I like this card in games with non-terminal draw!  It helps in a situation like this because it gets those Labs into play faster and helps accelerate the Upgrade (if you use Chancellor properly, anyway).  At any rate, it worked.  Mustard 42-32.

Game 2 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-191505-eb8b6f8b.html

The general rule (mine, anyway) is open Chapel or not at all.  I broke that rule.  Instead, I opened Smithy/Silver with the hopes of having a good Mint buy, and it worked.  I was able to Mint away 6 Coppers very early, chapel the Estates and add lots and lots of Golds.  We danced around the Gardens and Duchies in the end, but I was staying >6 up and was never in danger.  Mustard 51-40.

Game 3 http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120325-192349-232804e2.html

My opponent opts out of Witches.  Mustard 46 - -100.

Game 4 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-193909-3939faa4.html

This was a complete mess.  Looking at all the attacks I overbuy Moat (isn't buying one Moat overbuying?  How about four or five?)  I get lucky and duck quite a few KC'd Swindlers.  At one point in the mid-game I was tempted to resign.  Somehow I get very lucky and win.  Mustard 31-28.

Game 5 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-194741-6ea2a5a1.html

My opponent opens Witch, I get mine later but it misses the reshuffle.  Game over.  ^_^_^_^ 33 -21

Game 6-7 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-195448-e0d0a2d9.html

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-200226-749aae76.html

My opponent tilts and resigns both games prematurely.  He had a chance in both games.  I hope he doesn't lose heart and drop from the tourney.

GokoDom / Re: IsoDom: Challenge General Discussion
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:23:31 pm »
My attitude during previous IsoDoms was that the rule is play this week's games this week and next week's games next week.  However, if there is a known issue, like one player knows he can't play at all next week or something similar, exceptions will be granted.  But ask first.

In this case it is ultimately Kirian's call.  But I would echo his statement that it is better to have a bit of flexibility than to have people miss games.

A few notes:

I am working crazy long hours on weekends now so updates will be early and late, and a bit in the middle at lunch.  I am basically getting my forty hour week in on Fri-Sat-Sun.  So please don't expect quick responses from me until Monday.

Also, I looked into setting up a bracket for my side, but I am having trouble figuring out how to set it up having already made the match-ups for week one before hand.  I'll try to get to it soon, but no promises.  If the folks on my side want me to release next week's match-ups early I will do so.

Finally, I am very pleased by the incoming results so far; the players I was most worried about dropping have finished their matches early.  That is a great sign.  I have enjoyed quite a few of the match commentaries.

Has anyone heard from or seen Ninjabus?  If he is spotted on Isotropic someone ask him to check in, okay?

I think you lose your "Lost Last" status after a tie.  Not 100% sure.

Yeah, each week will correspond to the next expac released through to Hinterlands in week seven.    I may give them cute names but that is just fluff.

I think that is a fine idea, blueblimp.  We'll leave it up to the second place finishers to decide if they want to hold a match.

I agree.  This is I hope the final form of the tournament, one that matches up pretty closely to the one described in the sign-up thread.  Sorry about the confusion.

GokoDom / Re: IsoDom: Challenge Rules
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:31:05 am »
I can only hope that the players in this tournament have the decency and honor to play their best game no matter the standings.  The only way I can enforce that is to preclude offending players from future IsoDoms.  Strategic drop-outs are also an issue, and I will not look kindly on these kinds of shananagans.  Not that I am worried that this will be an issue.

Also, I dropped the group multiplayer round, which seemed like a good idea but is not really in line with the spirit of what folks signed up for.

Okay, again, I appreciate feedback from all reasonable people.  Again, I apologize for being an amateur, but I can assure you that I am willing to recognize shortcomings and address them with fairness.

SO would it be better for the group stage to end without a multiplayer game?  Or is it okay to include a multiplayer match in each group that contributes tournament points towards the total already earned?
