Dominion Articles / Re: Poacher

You should mention that Poacher's discard effect can specifically be useful with trashers, notably Sentry, if you are able to guarantee what card will be in the discard.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Official Dominion Strategy Podcast

I think the podcast would have more audience if it were shorter, I'am a bit discouraged by this 50min lenght (however, I'm not the main audience since I do not understand english very well, especially listening)

While normal videos should certainly aim to be short, the audience for podcasts typically wants something lengthy, as they listen to them during long commutes or work.

hey guys!

Listened to it, it's very cool, hope to be your guest one day ;)

Improvement-wise, I think that it would be much better if some quiet wordless music would play in the background, Seprix has this stuff, I know :)

I object. I've never listened to a podcast with background music and I don't intend to start.

I already commented at length on Discord. summary: I like it, keep it up and make small improvements.

Dominion Articles / Re: Bandit: What's Her Deal?

I think it's a good article.

On the starving kids note, please do not donate your thieves or any other items that would be useless to starving children. (For instance, instead of a pair of shoes you would consider nice, donate a pair of shoes that is useful for walking distances-it's more generally useful) It actually creates a bigger problem for charity organizations because they/others then have to find places to discard the useless things donated to them.

Sounds like a good article topic to me. Blindly buying Herald is pretty bad, IMO.

Anyone ever run into lyrics sheets on album inserts clearly disagreeing with what is sung on the album, but both versions work equally well and have very similar meanings?

I just noticed that in the Queen song '39 (A Night at the Opera), the second part of the second verse is in the sheet as:

Quote
For the earth is old and grey, to a new home we'll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes in your eyes cry to me

However, on the album (at least, the CD I have, which was rereleased in 1991) May seems to sing:

Quote
For the earth is old and grey, little darling we'll away
And my love this cannot be
For so many years are gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me

Some of those could be artifacts of hearing what I expect to, but I really cannot hear anything other than "little darling".

I wonder if they are transposed for the lyrics sheet from the original song writings, though during recording they take different takes and mix the ones they like the most.  I know some bands (e.g., Belle and Sebastian, I think The Shins as well) sometimes change songs a bit when they perform live, maybe letting the song evolve as it grows older, or something.  I suppose if you write a song you might have a number of different versions with slight modifications, and different ones could end up in different places?

Also possible they took a different mix on the remasterings from the original record, but the insert was the same as the record.

Apparently Bob Dylan is notorious for this. He will add entire new verses to classic songs when he plays them live.

I always resign and blacklist after step 3.

Why would you resign? If you beat someone who denied you the undo earlier it's so much more glorious  ;)

You should resign a) because trolls thrive more on rustling people's jimmies for prolonged periods than actually winning games and b) because it's much more useful for mods to have examples of games to pull up in which someone was clearly being trolled and chose to resign and blacklist.

« on: September 08, 2017, 07:18:45 am »
How about...

Heirloom, Treasure-Victory, Cost 0, Not in the supply
1 Coin
21VP

You want to think twice before trashing your family heirlooms...

Some immediate flaws:
- Swindler becomes even swingier (maybe you could work around it with 'when you trash this you may put it in your hand').
- My chapel hit 3 estates, yours hit... oh, 4 heirlooms, how interesting. But maybe that doesn't matter because chapel becomes a much weaker opening all round if there are 7 heirlooms and you don't want to trash them.
- Moneylender, Cutpurse etc

4 provinces to make up for trashing a copper... I'm not saying you've guessed wrong, but...

Dominion Articles / Hot Take: Triumph
« on: September 07, 2017, 04:33:47 pm »
This is a messy article that I'm sure is missing some nuances. I just felt like writing something. I hope it helps somebody.

In Adam Horton's recent analysis of a reddit card ranking poll, Triumph was the second-most controversial pick of the lot, with ratings ranging from 2/10 to 9/10 and an extremely high variance. It's understandable; until you have lost to a good Triumph strategy, you might be inclined to think it's a mediocre event. I'm here to argue that Triumph is anything but that, and it can in fact be such a centralizing endgame purchase that it should weigh into your plans from the start of the game unless there's just no way to make it good.

When is Triumph good?
To put it simply, when you have ways of gaining many cards in a turn. These gains could come from +Buy, traditional gainers such as Ironworks or Workshop, Remodel variants, or even non-traditional gainers like Bandit Camp and Beggar. As long as you are gaining cards during turns, Triumph has the potential to explode, and the more you can gain, the better it gets.

As a simple example, Beggar gains three cards to your hand (Copper). The Estate gained from purchasing Triumph adds another, and as a result, Triumph grants you 4 virtual victory points. That's more than a Duchy, and you potentially paid $0 for this Event. (taking Debt tokens) You might be thinking, "but Beggar gains me crappy cards!" Well, Beggar isn't the only synergy. Let's take the example of Bandit Camp. If you manage to get five of them and play them all, that's a Spoils per play, and those also factor into your point total. Spoils are nice, right? But you need not necessarily be loading your deck with stop cards like treasure and victory cards.

Let's say you don't even want to commit to gaining cards just for Triumph. The truth is, gainers are already good things to have in your deck in most cases. You WANT a way to get mass amounts of Villages or other components. Spending $7 on 2 cards is often better than just buying a Gold. Triumph is icing on the cake. When your deck is humming along and gaining you great stuff ALREADY, but all of a sudden the end of the game is near, that's when you light the fuse and go in on Triumph to capitalize on what your deck can already do!

That's a lot of points
Novice and mid-level Dominion players fall victim to the cost-sunk fallacy a lot. "Since Province costs $8, surely it's better than something that costs 5D!" However, the math is quite clear with Triumph. If you gain more than 6 points, you are paying less for a value higher than what the Province could have given you. To be fair, the end goal of the game is a concern. Perhaps lowering the Province pile is valuable since you want to end the game more quickly. However, something to keep in mind is that games where Triumph is important have a good chance of ending on piles since many cards are being gained; you might as well make one of those a 10-point Estate, huh? Maybe you think this is just an extreme good case for Triumph, but that case is more common than it sounds on paper. Bear in mind, Triumph has a similarity with Goons: you can always purchase Coppers at the end of the game to power up your Triumph turn. Let's say you have a game with Worker's Village and split the pile even. 5 of those is 5 extra buys, so with the additional Estate gain from Triumph, you're already beating Province. (Of course, you need not purchase Copper if more useful cards are affordable)

Victory Points are for the end of the game
In almost any game of Dominion, you want to delay greening as long as possible, and the same is true for Triumph. It's especially true if you can continue to gain Gainers and build up to a better Triumph purchase, but no matter what the case, waiting is generally a good plan. With that said, if your opponent is similarly interested in Triumph, it may be necessary to contest Estates earlier in the game than normal. This is a judgment call, and it's the same as any other greening judgment call you'd make in Dominion, only with the huge caveat that you can spend $0 to purchase Triumph. Remember that only 5 pre-Triumph gains means 6 points (as much as a Province) and you can potentially do a lot better! How many times have you built a huge engine, had a bunch of Buys at the end of the turn and had to click "End Turn" because there was nothing good to spend them on? I'm just saying, Triumph and its tempting cost gives you a magnificent option.

Stacking
Something to keep in mind is that there's no limit on how many Triumphs you can purchase as long as enough Estates are in the supply. As long as you have $5 or more (and multiple buys), multiple Triumphs are an excellent endgame play; each one you do will be worth one extra point as well. In fact, in many cases, this will be flat-out better than buying a Province. In nearly all cases, points-wise, it's better than buying a Duchy.

Anti-Triumph

The best way to counter someone going for Triumph, generally, is to buy your own Triumphs. Maybe that goes without saying. However, there could be reasons this isn't feasible. If the Estate pile is getting low, do bear in mind you have the option of denying potential points from a Triumphing opponent by simply buying Estates. Usually, this is a losing play since the player building up to Triumph probably has an overwhelming endgame control advantage, but it's important to keep the tactic in mind just in case it comes up. Remember that Estates are cheap, and if you have +Buys you can easily burn the pile. Another situation could be that you are shooting for Provinces and your opponent is just slogging it out with Triumph. If that's the case, you do not want the game to drag out and need to green hard, possibly accelerating with cards like Salvager or Rebuild to get big payloads. Even then, I'd be a little afraid.

Conclusion, if any
Triumph is a powerful event. Like many cards in the game, it's situational, but don't let that fool you into thinking those situations never happen, or you will one day be on the receiving end of a devastating point gulf because of Triumph. If there are ways to gain cards in the game, one of the first things you should be asking yourself is whether you can make Triumph more than or equally as valuable as Province.

I have no objections to Adam running the blog. The only thing I would be worried about is potential drama.

Other people who could I could see running it are Wero, Tracer, and jsh. I could help volunteer as well, if someone else wants a second person. I think the best solution here is probably some sort of coalition, where articles are heavily scrutinized while posted here/on my forum/Reddit/wherever before being put on the Blog for maximum information.

The thing is, the blog is very useful. You're an irl person, you're looking for a way to beat your friend, so you look up "Dominion board game strategy" and boom, Dominion Strategy has all the keywords already. It's always going to get hits. The best thing to do is to have it obviously link to f.ds and the wiki (as if it's not doing that already) and to have updated good articles. Take down all the silly combos like Pirate Ship/Ambassador which has become a running joke, etc. There could be a page for beginner Dominion players for Base set strategies, 1st and 2nd edition. Promote Dominion Online and increase the amount of users from irl. I know people who play Dominion irl and didn't even know there's an Online Version. There's all sorts of stuff that could be done with the blog and I am excited to help with that, or have anybody doing anything with it really. Anything is better than it sitting there doing nothing.

The blog could be organized better, I think. Maybe some hot links to types of articles, especially key ones like WW's deck types.

I would also make the community links more up to date and more front and center. A lot of users are not even aware there are places to discuss Dominion like the forums, reddit, and Discord. Dominion Online ALSO needs to be linked to on the front page!

Old, outdated articles or frankly wrong ones (like Amb/PS) could just be put in an 'obsolete articles' section. There's no need to unpublish them; just make it clear that taking them as gospel is not recommended.

13
Did anyone actually ask wero if he wanted to do it? I mean, it's not a stretch, but he should get some say lol.

I like wero's idea of co running it with beyond awesome. And heck, if it's just the blog anyway, why not also let Adam contribute? They are strategy articles and he's pretty good at those.

14
On the other hand, as lf ninjad, Adam has had a bumpy history with the users here. It's not necessarily a deal breaker, but it's something to consider. If it's a question of capability, he's certainly qualified.

Please explain his qualifications to me.

He knows how to run a blog, works in software, and has even done some community outreach for dominion in his area. I'm not saying those qualify him for sure, but they are considerations.

For the record, if I didn't run discord already, I'd enter the race.

Btw, big respect for theory on being willing to make this change. It's really hard to give up your digital baby, especially when it's been so successful.

15
Why not put it up to a vote and let them both make their cases?

Personally, I am in favor of wero. All personal feelings about both players aside, wero has put a ton of work into the wiki and I trust him to stay active or find a replacement that will when the time comes. From a historical standpoint, he's an obvious choice.

On the other hand, as lf ninjad, Adam has had a bumpy history with the users here. It's not necessarily a deal breaker, but it's something to consider. If it's a question of capability, he's certainly qualified.

16
Thanks jsh. I'll check it out at some point.

If it's a format like IRC, is it easy to find old information or does strategy discussion that happens eventually become hard to find over time? Would be a shame if strategy is developing but those who are not around at the time miss out.

There is a search feature, and the channels that have not been deleted (temporary tournament channels mainly) are searchable. However, no, nobody is trying to save information in particular. We just learn a lot tossing ideas back and forth.

17
People keep saying all the discussion is on Discord. I have 2 questions.

1) What is Discord?
2) If all the discussion has moved over there, could someone make a sticky thread or something saying as such and linking to it? Visibility about this seems to be limited to people just occasionally bringing it up.

Discord is a text and voice chat service that has all but replaced IRC and is slowly replacing Skype, at least in gaming networks. It has a lot of great features and is extremely reliable, but for whatever reason the developers decided to make all Discord channels private. There is a link to the channel in my signature (I'm the admin of the channel). At first I spammed the link a lot, but it seemed like it might be annoying people, so I try to limit talking about it now. I agree there should probably be a sticky; it's a highly active channel at this point and strategy discussion does in fact seem to mostly be happening there and not on the forums these days. With that said, the channel is not actually affiliated with Dominionstrategy (nor do I necessarily want it to be) so not having a sticky also makes sense.

This has been this week's Discord PSA. You are welcome to come visit the channel and see it for yourself.

You have to be actively and unjustifiably assuming malice on the part of the other person to make "Good luck" offensive. What a world.

I mean, there are people who interpret "gg" as a taunt or a boast, so I don't think it's a crazy thing to discuss. To be clear, I'm not staking out the position that it IS offensive -- it just strikes me as a pointedly odd phrase to use in a game that can turn on luck.

I like McGarnacle's interpretation the best: it's the hope for the absence of horrible luck to all players.

This is why it's not crazy to think someone could see it as offensive. There are in fact games where "gg" is used as the equivalent of "I bodied you, scrub." A simple "hi" or just "have fun" is a perfectly neutral greeting that isn't really open to other interpretations.

20
I agree with you (Cave-o) which is one reason I don't say it (the main reason being that I rarely greet anyone on the internet). "Have fun" makes sense unless Possession is on the board or something. I would assume "glhf" comes from other online games and people have simply adopted saying it, but I agree, if someone doesn't know the context it could even be taken as offensive.

Dominion World Masters / Re: World championship 2017
« on: August 21, 2017, 07:20:50 am »
When this tournament has qualifiers anyone in their respective countries can actually find out about and go to, I will worry more about it being 'fair.' As it is, it's hardly a showcase of the best players in a country; it's just a showcase of players who happen to live in/near areas where specific events happen to be advertised or who are able to go to GenCon. I am guessing that the reason there are no other countries represented is because no event contacted RGG and asked from those countries. Japan and Mexico apparently went that extra mile. Either that or they did but the players did not want to travel to Indianapolis.

If we want the event to be taken more seriously as a "world master's," it's probably best to get somebody who wants it to do that in charge of the thing. As we know from this interview, Jay himself isn't that big on tournaments, and is probably unlikely to spend a lot of his time on it. We should really be happy there is a big tournament at GenCon at all: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=3489.0
