Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion Cards You Hate

Cultist is the only card in the game I dislike. Ends up being a cultist BM into slog game a super high percent of the time. And I don't mind BM games! But it feels super luck ball. You both opened silver silver but I won the ruins split 7/3? Whelp, sorry. Gg.

So the major issue with this is it makes +buy kind of ignorable. Ok, so you end up with 14$ with no +buy? No problem you will be getting a province your next few turns.

It wouldn't make me sad if Cultist got nerfed :-).

Only card in the game I actively dislike.

Adam, first of all I want to let you know that I think you are a hugely valuable member of the community.  Often, when I am reading a thread I think to myself, "Self, AdamH is the only one in this thread I agree with."

This whole thing feels like a re-occurrence of the Wandering Winder dispute with league moderators (Stef?).  I'll share my opinion this time, which was pretty much my unshared opinion at that time.

The league is NOT a democracy, a representation of community wishes, an official anything.  It is a creation of Stef.  You can dislike the way he runs it.  You can leave the league.  You can create, or encourage others to create, an alternative run more in the way you feel like it should be run (which, I imagine would be more community input centric).  You can demand that the league moderators change.  But that's about the limits of what you can do.  There is no greater organizing body of Dominion.

In this specific instance I am, unusually, not particularly sympathetic to your arguments although I do feel really badly that your feelings were hurt and that you weren't treated in a way you would have liked to have been.

If one or more the people in the championship match don't want you to commentate, I honestly think that should be that.  I don't really think you have any grounds to argue with their decision, and it doesn't actually matter why they feel that way.  In fact, I think it's somewhat rude to try to force them to give you reasons.  They shouldn't have to and it puts them in an uncomfortable situation.
You can appeal to them that the community would appreciate it, but when it comes down to it I think you have to respect their decision.

Anyway, again, I really appreciate your varied contributions to the community and hope you continue to do so.  I really like your views on a lot of topics, I just don't happen to agree with you here, although I am sorry if you felt treated unjustly :-(

Dominion Articles / End Game Strategy: A case study
« on: January 25, 2016, 09:15:28 am »
Hi, all.  This is my first submission to the forums.  I wasn't sure whether this belonged more in articles or game reports, but articles felt right.  If you can help me with how to format this better, I would appreciate it.  Content suggestions are, of course, also welcome.  I can very easily go into more depth about each of these 3 topics if that is what you guys think I should do.  Was trying to keep it short.

I played a set last night in which, through a mixture of opponent's good play, my poor play, and the will of the shuffle gods, I found myself in completely losing positions. In all three cases, my opponent (a pretty decent player) botched the end game and lost.  I felt like a lot of people could use a little more time dedicated to closing out games. Without further ado:

End game issues: a case study.

Game 1: Noticing forced wins. http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160124/log.0.1453624889120.txt

On opponent's turn 13, opponent produces $20 with plenty of buys to three pile the 4 remaining Foragers and buy another Province, giving him a solid win. Instead he buys a Province and 2 Gold. The next turn I pile out the remaining Feoda to steal the win.

The moral: win when you can. The next turn the game may be over having slipped from your grasp.

Always, and especially when piles are getting low, look for ways to empty 3 piles if you can end up with more points than your opponent.  Things you should consider: How many gains you will need to make this happen; how much money you will need to make this happen; special cards that can make piles empty super fast (stone mason comes to mind).

Game 2: Not allowing your opponent to pile out and steal a win. http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160124/log.0.1453626210474.txt

Opponent's Turn 16:  I'm feeling totally lost. Opponent has built a strong lead, crucially winning the lab split 6-4. He pauses for a while thinking about what to do with his $13.  I think to myself: "Please lower piles. Please lower piles!"  He lowers piles. I empty 3 piles and buy an estate to steal the win.

The moral: don't let games you have won slip away. Just like you should be looking for forced wins, you also need to look for what could go wrong that could allow your opponent to force a win.

When you are ahead, it is important to think about what the WORST thing that could happen on your opponent's turn.

Does buying a province allow them to MAYBE double province for the win? Maybe consider buying two duchies instead.  If you buy 2 more grand markets are they going to POSSIBLY be able to pile out and steal a win?

This is an especially important consideration when you are ahead, but he converse is also important when behind. When you are behind you might be thinking: how can I steal a win? What happens if they have a dud hand? What can I do to end the game with a win if everything goes right for me?

Game 3: You must be able to end the game somehow. http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160124/log.0.1453627096085.txt

I open with the idea of going Duchy/Duke; opponent opens by thinning down.  Somehow, I lose the Duchy split 5/3.  I switch gears and start rebuilding while acquiring points via Nobles. Opponent continues to trash and buy dukes and ends up stalling out hard.  He resigns.

The moral: it doesn't matter how big a lead you get; if you can't end the game in some way and opponent can catch up, then you are setting yourself up for a loss.

I'm not convinced he was lost here. I think he could build a little and hope noble brigands miss and try to three pile on Border Village/Duchy/Duke.  But the point stands. Getting a lead only does so much if the opponent can attack you (or you stall yourself out) while continuing to gain points themselves. This is one of the strengths of an engine.

Other examples where this can happen: you go for a money strategy and build a big lead only to be decimated by Pirate Ship, Thief, Saboteur, etc played multiple times by an engine player.  You start building and get completely buried by an Ambassador player and find yourself unable to get to 4 or 5 Provinces.  You get 5 provinces against a weak Goons engine, but stall out without their help buying Provinces as they accumulate pints.

In summation: you can outplay your opponent for most of the game, but if you misplay the end game, you will lose a lot of games you shouldn't.  Be diligent in looking for 3 pile forced wins, be wary of your opponent 3-pile stealing a win from under your nose, and make sure you have a plan to end the game. Then, when you outplay me the rest of the game, you get to go home with a W instead of an L.

Game Reports / Re: King's Court
« on: January 20, 2016, 08:48:33 pm »
https://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160120/log.0.1453318525477.txt

Where I get 9 king's courts, goons, and fishing village and surprisingly win.

A couple thoughts that I hope help:

1) goons and KC are definitely the way to go here. Sooooo many possible points!

2)  you really want to trash down with count. You want your deck looking something like: count, goons (4 or so), KC (4 or so), hamlets and treasuries (the number here doesn't matter, you are buying them on spare buys. And ideally NOTHING else.

3) you are looking to use KC to draw and play all your goons. You get a million points the turn you empty pile.

4) no on should buy a province here.

5) your opponent played pretty poorly.

Golds would've been better, they usually are.

I know it's popular to bash on goons garden, but it makes me sad when people here do. It feels mean. He wasn't nearly as unreasonable (initially) as a lot of people act.

Like your quote here. Maybe I'm wrong but I think he said KC is NOT skipable 90-93% of the time. But you have quoted him twice in the last few days as saying the opposite.  The whole thing was lamentable and I'm not sure anyone came out looking good.

I like Ballroom a lot.  I'm pretty strongly in the "Ballroom > B.O.M." camp, mostly due to this reason:

There are boards where B.O.M. might be better than Ballroom, but most of those boards you don't really want B.O.M. anyway.  When you DO want B.O.M., I think you would almost always just prefer Ballroom.

But I don't think it's stronger enough to be broken.  I'd probably put this at #15 or so on my list of $5 cards (so, very high).

I actually think the better comparison in terms of function than to BOM is to Workshop.  It fills the same role as workshop, but is MUCH stronger in the early game, and morphs into a throne room right around the time you want it to.

13
Man, I don't read the forums that often but this is the second time I've seen Awaculus post these ridiculous obviously false statements about farming village. It's bazaar!

Maybe my village pun can get the thread back on track to discussing these new cards that, I have to admit, are really cool ideas!

14
Man, people really like trashing now.

I'm pretty sure there are a ton of boards where there is no other trashing and the person who gets dame Anna often just wins.

Also, in a knights battle, she usually trashes 2-6 cards for you and then gets removed from your deck around the time you aren't excited to have her anymore.

The only one I would disagree by more than a few spots with here is Natalie. There are a significant number of boards where I want her much more than some of the others. Of course sometimes she is trash.

Also who are these people who don't like Michael? He's pretty good!

15
So it seems people here don't want this to happen. I don't agree with this, I don't think any of the reasons for not even trying it hold any water at all, but it seems that people would rather be able to troll and make their jokes at the expense of actual discussions about Dominion and my desires are not enough to make them change their minds.

So I'm giving up on this. It's been a completely miserable experience for me trying to make this happen and I don't want that anymore. I had previously said that I would probably stop posting here if this couldn't be a reality, but theory added a really cool ignore feature that has been just great for me so far so I suppose I'll see how things go with it. I will also not be afraid to just peace out of threads that have gone off-topic, I did that a couple of times already today and it didn't feel all that bad.

I'll say thanks again to all of the people who had helpful comments or ideas or who sent me supportive PMs (some who even disagreed with me!) There are still some really good people around here and I think you may be surprised to see that their number of posts and respect is not as high as one might think they would be. Like, seriously, every one of Qvist's posts about the cards lists should be filling up the messages of the week but that's just my opinion. Oh well.

I will do my best to learn what I can from this experience and try to find the right level of involvement in this community. Some of my ideas will be harder to make into a reality now but I'll still probably try them, just not here.

So, not to try to bring this discussion back on topic or anything, and maybe I've missed some of the history of this effort, being a semi-active f.dser, but I think the problem is that you might be longing for a lost halcyon that may not be possible to revive.

I think the peak of this community (before I was involved) was people discovering the game together, exploring it's flavors, testing new ideas. But most of the core of dominion strategy has been pretty hashed out. The last really interesting strategy discussion I remember seeing here was the Haggler purchase you made that many people panned that I was pretty ok with. Think about how that went: there was a sense of "this has already been settled- x is right, y is wrong."

I think most people here are maybe ok with being past the point of trying to spend lots of time grappling with growing, largely because they have the game pretty figured out or at least figured out enough for them to be happy. And now the forum is a place to enjoy discussing a game that everyone on here enjoys and has as a common point of reference. Of COURSE it's a breeding ground for jokes - there's history and common interest.

I think it's the trade off you get when you have a bunch of experienced players who have discussed this stuff forever.  You can try to get what you want here or just port over to the reddit community which is small and on topic and mostly made up of people who just think wrong things about dominion and how it's played. But they are still growing and interested in developing. Trade offs.

My vote would be go for it man. Who cares if some people aren't interested?  You make a thread. You moderate it. If people end up liking it it will thrive. If people don't it won't.

Dominion Articles / Re: Scout
« on: November 09, 2015, 04:16:07 pm »
I just bought Scout in an IRL game with a Bazaar/Wharf/Conspirator no trashing engine.  It helped activate a couple of early conspirators and lined up a Bazaar to draw the Wharf.  I think I just might be able to say that my deck was better with Scout than it was without.
This is huge. Whoever writes the article needs to quote you on this.

"Scout: sometimes doesn't make your deck worse!"

Similarly you want to buy coppers sometimes (way more often).  Should there be an article on buying copper?

Still things to be worked out, but overall I'm pretty impressed with the continued improvement.  Things I like:

- The rematch option is pretty nice.

- The one player option is marginally more interesting

- The way it runs for me is already as good as goko.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Baker Board with Chapel
« on: September 28, 2015, 09:54:19 pm »
Man. I guess I'm the only one who thinks this would be pretty strong a fair amount of the time. One of the only issues with chapel is a lack of economy early. Having a gold makes it much easier to never buy a silver. I mean even if you're going chapel with bakers, a gold in there makes you able to buy bakers without wasting coin tokens. The trashing is so strong I'm not worried about slightly worse cycling.

Would I open gold/chapel every board? Of course not. Could I see doing it some not insignificant portion of the time and being quite happy with it?  Yeah.

Help! / Re: funkdoc's journey to 5k (& beyond)
« on: August 05, 2015, 10:44:47 am »
First of all, we all have ups and downs.  I dropped down about 700 points on Goko, 5 levels on isotropish recently.  Ok, streaks happen.  Don't let it get you too down.

Second, yeah it could definitely be because you are playing without really be focused on playing.  I remember playing like 6 games in a row with WW where I lost EVERY single game and, ok, so maybe 1 or 2 were luck of the draw, but mostly I was just playing terribly.  Maybe take it back a notch and play every game at half the speed you have been.  Take some time to analyze the board at the beginning as deeply as you can.  Don't just come up with a plan; refine that plan.  Consider alternatives.  Before triggering a reshuffle midturn, consider whether it's a good one.  Before buying something, reconsider.  Try to look at how the piles are running multiple times per game.  Maybe just try slowing things down.  Maybe instead of playing, spend an hour watching MicQ's excellent stream and thinking about why he's doing what he's doing, and if you differ in what you expected him to do, why that is.

Idk, 5000 is definitely achievable!  I believe in you.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Gray's Cards revisited.
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:49:09 pm »
Wow.  I've got to say I'm impressed.  Usually when I read fan cards I think most of them seem bad or way too strong.  These all come off as useful in some situations but not all, which seems to be right where you want cards.  Very nice work.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards you hate!
« on: August 03, 2015, 02:46:59 pm »
I dislike cards that encourage simple strategies (only that card+Big Money, for example). Things like Cultist, Jack of All Trades, to a lesser extent Minion (it does function with a few other Action cards).

I'm also annoyed by cards that are simply too weak to ever bother with, such as Chancellor, Thief and Scout.
Chancellor actually isn't very weak, Thief has it's place in some decks, and even Scout isn't always 'too weak to bother with.'

So, I think this is becoming a repeat of that scout article you tried to write.  I'm not sure exactly where the disconnect is between what everyone else agrees to be true and what you believe about cards like these (although I'm more with you than not on Thief).  I THINK it might be that you are missing the idea of opportunity cost?

So, like you keep saying things along the lines of "chancellor's power is better than a silver by itself" which is quite clearly true, but I think misses the costs of buying chancellor over, at the very worst, a silver (although on most boards there will be another 3 or 4 cost you want more than both chancellor and silver, for varying reasons.  Let's walk through some of the problems of buying a chancellor instead of say, a silver.

- Problem 1: If you have any terminal draw in your deck, which you will quite often want (like, way more often than you want chancellor), you have a chance of drawing chancellor dead, lowering the value of that hand by $2.

- Problem 2: Ok, so you recognize the nice benefit that chancellor provides of cycling you quickly, so that on turn 3, when you draw Chancellor, CopperX3, Estate, you can instantly shuffle in your 5-cost you really want in your deck (and you seem to get this, which is actually one of the more tricky concepts for a lot of people to get).

But now when your Mountebank or whatever your 5 cost is collides with your Chancellor, your Chancellor is again a dead card, lowering your hand value by $2 again.  In fact, this is a basic concept of not wanting terminals to collide.  Unless you will never be buying another terminal in the game, you probably don't want chancellor, because, ok, so that ability he has is nice, but not as nice as that other terminal you want.

So, ok, you're aware that you might have a terminal collision so you add a couple villages to make sure that doesn't happen.  Well now you've spent 3 buys on a fancy silver.  Probably not the best use of buys/money.

- Problem 3: In any sort of engine board, you don't want stop cards.  Chancellor is a stop card.

So the basic problem is that if you plan on having any other terminals in your deck... ever, then chancellor is probably worse for your deck than silver, because it's benefit is worse than the cost.  Note that if you tweak it just a little into scavenger, it's suddenly much more useful in many more games, even at the higher cost.

But, ok, so yeah maybe the board is so weak that chancellor/big money is actually the best thing doing!  It's certainly possible.  So let's just see how often that happens.  Here's a list of my latest games where chancellor was on the board.  Let's just see if there are any other terminals in each game that I would want in each game, which might make it so I don't buy chancellor.

Game 1 - Goons             Game 2 - Butcher     Game 3 - Ghost Ship         Game 4 - Vault if I'm going big money, probably no terminals if I'm not.    Game 5 - Goons         Game 6 - Nobles/Courtyard     Game 7 - Butcher     Game 8 - Cutpurse        Game 9 - Masquerade           Game 10 - Ambassador.

I mean, are there any of these games where you'd prefer chancellor in your deck to the card listed?  Mayyybe game 8?  The point is, when people say chancellor is weak, they mean that when they look at a board, it takes like 1 second to be decide that chancellor is completely ignorable because there is some other terminal they want more, so chancellor is worse than silver.

The same goes with scout.  Ok, so you can come up with some contrived situations where you are not SUPER unhappy to have scout in your deck.  But it's very rare that there wasn't another card that you could have bought instead of scout that you want in your deck more.  Hope this helps.
