Dominion General Discussion / Re: Card Sleeves
« on: September 05, 2012, 01:05:10 pm »
Just for another data point: I also use Mayday sleeves (normal, not premium). They work great. I've bought like ~30 packs, and out of that only had one pack with sleeves that were too small. And I'd say less than 10 sleeves have ripped so far after heavy usage. So thats like a 3% failure rate for me (probably a lot less actually. Even most  of the "too small" sleeves were big enough to squeeze in a card, it was just a tight fit. Probably less than 20 were actually too small to fit a card). Each pack is pretty cheap, so I would just recommend buying a few more than you need in case you get a bad batch and/or to replace ripped ones.

I would advise against the premium sleeves. Not only are they more money, but they're noticeably thicker which means you can fit less cards in a box.

Keep in mind that sleeves from different companies will be recognizably different, so once you start sleeving cards make sure you buy enough to cover any future expansions you plan on buying (I ordered extra in anticipation for Guilds).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Discard & Trash Piles + Dark Ages

I've found it helpful to create a separate "good" trash pile of cards that cost between 3 and 6 when playing with Graverobber.

Yeah try to find a local card or game store. Most of them will sell boxes in various sizes for around $2 bucks or less each.

We usually just have someone who's not the currently playing player keep track of how many actions are left (either by saying it out loud or holding up fingers). Helps a lot.

RE: the weight

Obviously it comes out to be the same weight no matter which you do (with multiple smaller boxes maybe having slightly more total weight since theres extra cardboard). But having done it both ways, I think carrying smaller boxes that each weigh less is nicer than one big one one. During transport I guess it makes no difference, but carrying around while you're playing or at your own house I find it easier. Plus with smaller boxes I find it easier to reconfigure in a way that fits in various bags (the giant 3200 would not fit in the backpack I use to transport four 660 boxes). In my mind using smaller boxes gives you more flexibility with no downsides.

I should also mention that I don't include any of the game mats (islands, pirate ship, etc) in my boxes which also lets me fit more in fewer boxes.

I have 660 card boxes, using index cards as dividers. I have everything currently released except Alchemy with sleeves and they fit into only 4 660 boxes with room to spare (although I don't include the randomizers in my boxes so that saves some space). I think it might be possible to get away with only 4 boxes even with Alchemy and Guilds, especially if you don't sleeve them.

I also am considering putting the common cards in their own box. That way I can grab just that plus whichever expansion(s) I want to play with if I don't want to carry everything. If you plan on carrying boxes around a lot (to other people's houses for example) it might be beneficial to buy a bunch of smaller boxes for each expansion instead of putting multiple expansions into a 660 box so that its easier to just grab one and/or fit things into a bag. Even 660s are better than 1600 or bigger for bag-fitting purposes (I used to have everything in the base Dominion box and this is way better).

Also separating into multiple boxes helps with weight and cleanup. It's easier to carry multiple smaller boxes rather than one big one, even though it would weigh the same total amount. And when you're putting cards away or taking new ones out, multiple people can help if the cards are spread out amongst several boxes.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Nombo of the day: Rats / most things
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:29:01 pm »
No I think Junk Dealer needs a lot of cards to trash for it to work, and Rats is a good source of that. +1 card isn't worth it by itself, but in combination with Rats ability to trash other crappy cards plus another trash for benefit card like Junk Dealer or Graverobber I think it works pretty well. Just my subjective opinion though, not like I've run simulator tests against big money or anything.

I can confirm that it works pretty great with junk dealer. In fact one of the two recommended Dark Ages sets has both Junk Dealer and Rats (and Graverobber, which can also work well with it if you get only a few rats. Junk Dealer works better with larger numbers).

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Interesting article on Goko launch
« on: August 22, 2012, 08:34:45 pm »
I think the licensing of the game to a third party whose interests aren't necessarily aligned with RGG or DVX is a big problem will be difficult or impossible to solve.

If the digital version was totally owned by RGG (either made by an in-house team, or outsourced to another company doing WFH), then some of the costs of the game could be offset by converting digital players into physical players. Goku does not get money from real physical sales of the game (as far as we know, if they do then disregard the rest of this) so they have to offset all their costs through the digital version. This leads to annoying microtransactions and also probably means they are not as invested in making the digital version as good as it could possibly be (once they have your money, they don't care if you end up being disappointed whereas in RGG-owned scenario they want you to really love the digital version so much that you end up going and buying a physical copy).

Anyone know when physical stores will have Dark Ages available to buy? I assume if I go into a store today it won't be there...

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Do we know when exactly it's going up?
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:40:09 pm »
Oh - and I forgot #4 - which is the conspiracy theory at all MMO launches - they knew it was going to fail - but they launched it anyway - because paying for the hardware to support peak launch is stupid when traffic inevitably dies down after a week.
This is why you use virtual instances on a cloud hosting site like Rackspace or EC2. Just make more instances when demand is high and kill them when traffic slows. Just having it completely fail is a terrible solution.

I gotta be honest, everything I've been hearing about the game on these forums make me think it's complete amateur hour over at Goko (and also that they're going for a Zynga-like cash grab). When I heard there was gonna be an official website/app I got really excited because I was expecting something along the lines of the Ticket to Ride iPad app quality-wise, but what I've seen and heard so far is hugely disappointing.

Trying to register for the official website. When I get to the captcha verification page, it says to enter the above characters but only a blank box appears. Running Safari 6 on OS 10.7.4 (with no Flash installed in case that's the problem...)

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Looking to the future: The Guilds
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:12:33 pm »
I'm sort of expecting cards that stay out in play permanently, or until you play another card of the same type which replaces it. E.g. a bunch of cards with type "Guild" that have some effect while in play (similar to bridge or goons). Guilds are not removed during the cleanup phase. If you play a card of type Guild, immediately discard all Guilds you currently have in play.

16
Even if there weren't instances like Vagrant where you want to talk about Ruins without triggering them to be included in the supply, it's a lot easier to just look at the card types to see if any are Looters than to read the descriptions of every card in your kingdom and decide whether or not that text means Ruins should be included. Having the Looter type makes Ruin inclusion rules simpler and more explicit.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Band of Misfits rules questions
« on: August 16, 2012, 07:55:47 pm »
Here's how I see it:

Both Procession and Throne Room refer to picking an "Action card" and both later use "it".

Given Donald's earlier ruling, for Procession "it" clearly refers to the physical card itself and not the action that was played. If "it" referred to the action and not to the physical card, then you wouldn't gain a card costing $6 when using BoM because Procession would have instead remembered that the action you played costed less than $5. So clearly "it" means the the card.

Therefore it would make sense to assume that the "it" on Throne Room also refers to the physical card. However the difference is here that Throne Room only checks what the card ("it") is once, whereas Procession checks several times. So at the time that Throne Room checks what the card is (the point at which you read the word "it") if the card is BoM Throne Room sees whatever BoM is pretending to be. Later on, if BoM self-trashed when it was played, it might no longer be the same card anymore (since it has left play), but Throne Room does not check again, it just assumes it is still the same card.

I think the answer would be different if Throne Room read "Pick an Action Card. Play it. Play it again." In that case, Throne Room would have checked what the card was a second time after it had been played. But as written it does not (which is a good thing, because otherwise BoM might get "stuck" as a different card, having been played but never actually entering the play area and thus never leaving play).

Edit: As a side note, I think BoM reverting to itself "when not in play" as opposed to "when leaving play" might have been safer and more clear from a rules perspective, but I don't think it actually matters in this case.

Getting both Remake and Chapel seems like a bad decision, or at least a riskier one. If you don't get the Remake with two estates on your 3rd or 4th turn, it is probably better/faster to go Chapel/Silver instead. Chapel away Coppers and Estates and just buy the Treasure Maps normally (you might need to buy a second Silver also).

Is it a thing people want that badly? The card seems a bit underwhelming to me. I mean, I ordered Black Market on BGG a while back because it's awesome, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get any of the other promos.

If you want a "real" Dominion app, you'll have to wait for the official one to come out, which should hopefully be soon now. This is just something I threw together in a couple days when I wanted to play with Cornucopia but didn't have room in my box for randomizer cards :P

I dunno, I like it when weird stuff like a BM deck with Trade Route or Young Witch happens. Black Market is a crazy card, and stuff like that just makes it even crazier.

Well I'm not too concerned with differentiating myself, since I wasn't planning on selling it. It was more of "I wanted it for myself, and as long as I already made it might as well share it with others" sort of thing. In fact I plan to have it up on Github within the next few weeks. But an iPad version would be nice, maybe I'll work on that once I finish all the features I want in this version.

I'm just finishing up the code for displaying card text. Once that's done I'll send you over a copy.

Goko Dominion Online / iPhone App
« on: August 13, 2011, 09:05:36 pm »
So a few weeks ago I started writing my own Dominion iPhone randomizer app since there wasn't one that supported Cornucopia. I guess since then scottyo has published one that does it (as seen here). But since I went through all the trouble of making it I thought I'd share it with all of you.

It's not on the store (yet), but if anyone wants a copy send me your iPhone's UDID and I'll send it to you.

Features:
  • Includes all currently released official cards, including Cornucopia and Walled Village.
  • Correctly picks Bane card for Young Witch
  • Remembers the last 20 generated kingdoms and lets you browse back through them
  • Easy on/off toggles for the expansions
  • Blacklist cards you never want to appear
  • Toggle to require that there's at least one card of each cost from 2 through 5.

Planned Future Features:
  • Full card text and rules
  • Full Black Market deck support
  • Toggle to require that new kingdoms have no cards in common with previously generated one
  • Whitelist (manually specify cards in randomizer deck)
  • Ability to require certain cards always be included
  • Bias generated kingdoms toward certain card types, expansions, and/or costs.

Dominion General Discussion / Interesting Black Market Decks
« on: July 25, 2011, 01:25:11 pm »
Anyone have any suggestions on ways to pick Black Market decks that are particularly fun/interesting/better than simply "every kingdom card not in the supply"? I've heard of people setting one expansion aside specifically for black market, not sure which expansion would be best (Cornucopia might be good). I've also considered adding Colony and Platinum to it, making a "renewable" BM deck (when you buy something, you take a copy of the card from the box instead of removing it from the deck, so that more than one person can buy it), or making it work more like Prizes where you can see the entire deck and buy any card you want. Anyone else have any ideas?
