I spend so long thinking that the conversation has moved on by miles by the time I try and post what's in my head! (Subtext: I'm slow .___.)

This reminds me a lot of me in my first mafia game. MIII. There I was also very slow to post about things, because I was also very thoughtful and constantly felt that the game had moved beyond me.

In that game I was mafia. However, I can't really be sure if that was because I was mafia or if it was because I was new to the game. Honestly, I think it had more to do with me being new to the game than being scum, but I will say that in general this sort of behavior tends to be scummy.

This is why. Town tends to not care what others think about them. They know they are town and automatically just assume that everyone will think that they are town as well. And then they are extremely surprised when people find them scummy! I mean angry, bitter, ragequit kind of surprised sometimes.

Whereas mafia really cares what others think abou them. They know they are mafia and automatically assume that everyone might start thinking they are scum if they say the wrong thing. As such, mafia tends to be much more methodical and careful about what they post for fear of being exposed.

This is why that, in general, mafia tends to have lower post counts than town players. This isn't always true, but often is. This doesn't mean that if you are town you need to post more. I think everyone should just post the amount that they feel most comfortable with.

So I am not going to vote for you, but it does raise my suspicions somewhat.

Yeah, this is generally the policy I'm taking into the game too. The reason I'm thinking so long is more because I'm trying to add to the theory discussions and end up getting lost in loops. Like working out if one player claims and then a scum were to counter claim how one could trace back and so on. I don't want to end up committing a fallacy that will confuse our efforts. Part of me feels that I'm too new (and too slow =/) to try and work that stuff out, an part of me feels that, other than our votes, our biggest weapons are our brains, even if they're not the smartest in my case >_<

Also the scientist in me doesn't like making bold claims without hard evidence. I keep thinking, "but there's no way I can PROVE that."

Basically, I need to relax and just say what I think I guess, even if it's likely wrong or stupid, and hope that everyone calls me out on it being wrong and stupid >_<

Werothegreat seems to be playing the fool by trying to vote for a mod and then has turned onto one of the strongest contributors so far.
What has werothegreat contributed thusfar?  Please explain how he is a strong contributor.

By "onto" I simply meant "on". I was actually calling YOU the strongest contributor Shraeye, and was voting to lynch werothegreat for lining you up in his sights. Sorry for the confusion there.

You make an excellent point Shraeye and I will try to be more constructive from now on. For future reference, "concern" was a bit of an overstatement for my comment on EFHW. It was more curiosity really.

Werothegreat seems to be playing the fool by trying to vote for a mod and then has turned onto one of the strongest contributors so far. Call me paranoid, but that seems somewhat suspicious to me.

Vote: werothegreat.

Okay before I respond to Eevee's comment, I just need to check what IC means. Does it mean innocent claim?

Day 1 ends April 1st 3pm forum time

April Fool's Day? Really? That... That has to be intentional, right?

6
Regardless, it's going to be hard to harvest souls as an innocent.. Any recommendations..?

Find the scum, get Jorbles out of their tower and then harvest their souls. That seems like a pretty legit course of action to me. What do you even use them for anyway? ???

7
Yea I am totally sorry for asking this, I understand it came off weird and it totally doesn't matter. Last game we had 3 girls and spent half them game confusedly calling them he and I was attempting to avoid offending anyone. I see now I could have done that anyway so I apologize and retract my statement.

No worries. I saw the mess of last game and was surprised no one just resorted to using "they" instead :P. This way we also don't have to out any trans*/gender-fluid/queer people who would rather just play mafia and not get into gender politics.

That said, I am now veering into gender politics instead of playing Mafia.

alas, the safe is also in the tower...

I knew I should have brought those plastic explosives with me. Who goes to a social venue WITHOUT explosives? It's just bad etiquette.

8
I didn't think that non-participants could post in this thread? Or is it just agreed that non-participants shouldn't?

9
I am a he, but tend to just call people "they" as force of habit anyway. I actually feel kind of weird asking people to reveal their gender to me as it's not really my concern. Feel free to call me whatever you like :P.

This is my first ever mafia game (though I have watched one or two). I don't know anyone on here irl and my time zone is GMT (it's currently 2105 as I post this).

10
Hello everyone!

Well I have to say that while I was kind of expecting people to try and murder me, I wasn't really expecting Jorbles to turn on us. :-\

Yeah, I really want for there to have been one Colony left in the supply and Morgrim decided to buy the curse instead.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: I'll miss Isotropic!
« on: March 09, 2013, 07:09:13 am »
This whole loading screen discussion is setting off my "trying too hard to attack Goko" alarm (I have set up some weirdly specific alarms - it's a quirk of wanting to be an engineer). I'm not saying that anyone discussing this doesn't have legitimate concerns about Goko. I have to admit that there are serious problems such as the lack of a useful or reliable automatch, the weird disparity between certain animation lengths, and the instability of the platform as a whole (which was a real problem when I first started playing, but is now almost never an issue for me). I do think that nitpicking about the choice of aesthetics for the very short loading screen at the start of a game is the very thing SirPeebles warned against near the start of this post:

But a lot of the criticism is misplaced.  That's bad enough, but what's worse is that the misplaced criticism can swamp out and devalue the legitimate criticisms.

I don't think a single person on this forum doesn't want a good, affordable, online dominion platform. Hell, it's why many of the users are here in the first place. However, I think attacking small things like the loading bar is hardly constructive. I get that this is frustrating, but with so many other obvious targets for constructive criticism, why go for something so insignificant?

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Will You Switch to Goko?

Yes, but not until March 15th.

Beware the Ides of March...

Are there any third party ways to track points yet, or inbuilt point tracker in the offing.

Personally, I just scrawl notes on my belly using my own blood. Much simpler.

Disclaimer: Do not try this at home kids. For a start, it's against the rules.

As long as people are playing and enjoying dominion, they will want to talk about it. You just need to look at the game reports forum for a while to see that even strong players are seeking help and opinions on their losses and showing off exciting and interesting games. The game is too varied, too deep and too surprising for conversation about it to simply cease.

On top of that the community seems really strong, helpful and inclusive. I've only been here a month, but have spent the time amazed by how great the atmosphere is here compared to many other online forums I've posted on. I feel free to post my opinions and questions, and many of the members here seem patient, helpful and just as curious about my problems as I am. It seems unlikely that the community will die just because there aren't expansions coming out every six to twelve months.

I think the bigger question is what will happen when Isotropic goes down. I've not really played there, but I wonder how many people will be switching to Goko when Iso goes down. Will those people that stop playing online dominion just fade away from the forum?

Simulation / Re: Best Gardens Rush enabler?

Welcome to the forums _me! That's a good point about Squire. Two +buys on a single card isn't to be sneezed at when all you need is copper to get your money density to 0.8. Also, the fact that with two Squires in hand you can still play them both for +$1 means that terminal collision isn't as annoying as it is with, say, Workshops. It doesn't give the terminal gold that Beggar does, but often that effect can be over-kill in a gardens deck.

I'm not a great gardens player though, so sim data to back any of this up would be handy.

Help! / Re: Duchy/Duke/Militia loses to Monument/BM?
« on: March 06, 2013, 06:54:44 pm »
Disclaimer: I am not an expert on Duke games (or any game for that matter).

In both my experience, and based on some of the strategy articles I've seen around, a card that is surprisingly useful in Duke decks is Copper. It helps to smooth out your money and brings your money density closer to 1.0. You hit $4 several times which meant you bought more and more Militias (which, as qmech pointed out, isn't as amazing as one would like here), and your deck was really lacking in treasure. Perhaps getting a Woodcutter earlier and using the +buy to grab a few coppers would have helped sustained your buying power a bit more, even if all it meant was that those turns you did nothing on, you instead bought a Silver.

I wonder a lot of things about this game. For instance, maybe getting a Rabble on your first $5 instead of a Duchy would have left you a bit more flexible, let you find your treasure and sustain your buying power a bit longer (hooray for terminal draw) and been a more powerful attack against your opponent (Militia won't discard a monument, but Rabble will). It's a shame there's no sifter for you here as well, they really help out a Duke deck as they tend to green so early and so hard that you can just drown in the green without something like Warehouse or Cellar. Monument is especially annoying here as while you're floundering in your fields of green, Monument keeps racking up the VP chips.

Cant remember if I have asked this before...

Roughly how many physical copies of your games do you think you have sold ?
It seems like this is the kind of thing you have to ask the companies. I don't know how public they want it to be. At one point Jay said in public that more than a million copies of Dominion had sold (counting all languages and expansions). So, more than a million.

The WSJ has Ticket to Ride at 2 million physical copies plus 1.8 million digital copies sold.

Do you think Goko Dominion will be as popular or more popular than the physical expansions once it is released on all platforms? To what extent do you think sales of one platform drives sales of the other?

The PA Report had a pretty good article about how Ticket to Ride's virtual sales helped boost the physical sales of the game and vice versa. You might be interested if you've not seen it already?

Same reason I play Scrying Pools after I've already drawn my deck and left a bad card topdecked for the opponent. Someone actually ragequit because of this once :(
Could have been me.

Well it wouldn't have been a problem if you hadn't veto'd Lighthouse. ;)

Simulation / Re: Best Gardens Rush enabler?
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:14:25 am »
You can also start denying Gardens, I would guess Jack wins against Gardens in this case.  I only know this for Smithy.  Of course, you have to be careful, of not speeding up the game.  But in a BigMoney mirror, you would start grabbing Duchies with something like 4 Provinces left, so about after you bought 2 Provinces. If you follow this strat for BM-Smithy, it beats WS/Gardens.
You shorten the game a bit, so Gardens will unlikely go up to 4 points, and every Gardens is a 5 point swing this way, almost as good as a Province, as they can't get Duchies.  With just two Gardens and 2 Provinces you are already 16:18 against the remaining 6 Gardens, that's a small gap to overcome with the stronger deck which can get Duchies or Provinces instead of Estates.

This is something that I feel makes analysing these rush strategies difficult. Often when I try a rush strategy, my opponent will catch what I'm doing early and start grabbing the cards that give me points (Dukes, and Duchies in IGG games bring back particularly painful memories). This causes the classic "to green, or not to green" metagame which gets more complex due to the presence of alt-VP. I imagine it's tricky to get simulators to take this all into account on the fly in a game, but I have seen people do some pretty impressive stuff with AIs.

Optimal Jester play right there. I can't think of any reason why the bot may have done that. More variety in the deck to be more likely to activate menagerie?

The bot's final deck was: 2 Menagerie, 2 Jester, 1 Great Hall, 1 Minion, 9 Copper, 5 Gold, 1 Silver, 5 Estate, 2 Province, 1 Duchy, 1 Curse

Dominion General Discussion / Re: "Missing the reshuffle"
« on: March 04, 2013, 05:22:08 pm »
It can be really nice to get a Curse into your opponent's deck just before a reshuffle (as opposed to just after) since it means that he'll draw that dead card one additional time.

This is why Sea Hag and IGG are such nasty cursers. They can get a Curse into your hand on turn 3/4 which obviously clogs up your hand, slows deck cycling and means it causes mayhem earlier than most other cursers that need to wait until turn 5 at the earliest before their damage is done. Those early hands are so crucial to getting an advantage that they can all but decide a game right from the start (think of discarding your Hag to your opponent's Hag on turn three - not fun).

IGG?
I thought that too, but IGG would make it more likely to hit $8 no?

Call me crazy (I prefer Mr. Crazy, but I'm fussy like that) but I'm tempted to say Duke?

Edit: Ninja'd! At least I wasn't the only one to think of that. If I'm thinking along similar lines to Sir Peebles, I feel I'm doing well.
