My opponent, Simon DK, hasn't responded to a request to schedule our match for five days. Is there a time limit? Does anyone know how to reach them?

I've played Magic over Skype, with moderate success. Dominion seems much easier, I'm glad you guys made it work!

Out of curiosity, is there an amount of money that could be raised and given to Jay that would convince him to let isotropic remain available? I had thought that perhaps the switch to Goko wouldn't be so bad after all, once they implemented some promised features, but now my trust for them is tanking hard. A wonderful community that I love is being destroyed and replaced by a pile of junk patched together by incompetent clowns, and it is worth quite a bit to me to save it.

I assume that there are contracts and such that would make any such scheme completely unworkable, but I'd still like to know what kind of cash it would take. If we did a kickstarter-esque fundraiser and got, say, $20k, would we be even a little bit close? I'm sure that's not nearly the expected value of online Dominion as a whole, but presumably lots of people will still prefer the shinier and oficialer client and give them money, while the more diehard isotropic fans will have paid up front for our beloved interface, game logs, and Councilroom statistics.

I'd personally be in for a thousand dollars if there were a chance of this becoming a reality. I'm only recently out of college and making fairly decent money, and I don't really spend it on all that much. It would be a big hit, but if I was actually instrumental in saving Isotropic, it would be worth every penny.

... ajmiam trashes 2 Provinces, gaining a Silver in hand.
ajmiam plays 2 Golds and a Silver.

I did that for the win waaay back in my first few months of playing paper Dominion, and gleefully told the story to anyone who would listen for weeks afterwards :D

With theory's permission, I could get a nice design for a DS-related tee up at teespring.com, and if enough people (maybe 30?) want them, they'd get made. We could do 0 profit, or make a tiny bit of money to put towards server upkeep.

If there's a high-quality/vector version of the logo art available, that would help.

If anyone else feels like making non-infringing or permission-enabled Dominion-related tees there, that would be cool too.

Congrats Fabian! Perhaps you can keep streaming Isotropic games and start monetizing your stream/YouTube channel, and pay your way to Gencon that way! :P

Using door prizes as an incentive to complete could be used. Everyone that completes all rounds gets ____. If you leave early you get nothing. Rewards are often better than penalties.

This is solving the wrong problem, though. A serious tournament shouldn't /want/ mathematically eliminated players to play. They can show up for the door prize and screw with the game in any random way they want with no consequence. A big part of managing a tournament experience is getting players' motives to at least vaguely line up with each other. When they don't, you get weird politics and personality quirks deciding matches, rather than anything like skill.

o_O didn't expect Randy to be there! That is awesome! I was all settled in to being happy I didn't make it since it meant I got to go on an awesome road trip with my girlfriend instead, but damn, I could've played Dominion against Randy Buehler...

Agree that just about everything about how it was run seems awful. The stated format (3p) is bad enough; but suddenly changing it to 4p finals on a whim? Restarting games when you can figure out who screwed up? Ew.

Anyway, congrats to dondon, and to ednever for making it to the finals! Thanks for the pictures.

ednever, if you can manage to get video of some of the games, that would be amazing! Maybe if you have some time that you're not playing, you could record another game? Or perhaps get a spectator/tournament official to do it?

Pretty awesome that it's 3 player instead of 4. That's halfway to 2 player! We're almost there! :D

Quote from: Jay
No player may choose to opt out because they feel they will not advance to the next round.

This rule is humorously similar to the original point counter ruling: it is unenforceable, and there can be no consequence for breaking it. I'm sure everyone who qualified is an honorable and wonderful person who will play to win even when they are out of contention, but forcing already-eliminated players into kingmaking positions is just ugly.

I understand that it seems nice for all the games to be 3-player, but it seems extremely unprofessional to ask players to waste their time when they've already lost, and even more so to ask people still in competition to play games with essentially a loose cannon. An eliminated player has no reason not to just to do silly things for laughs, or try as hard as possible from turn 1 to kingmake for their favored opponent, or take any number of other irrelevant actions that have no place in a tournament.

I hope Jay reconsiders this rule, or that eliminated players ignore it and leave anyway.

You could just score as if you're playing a tennis set.  (To be pedantic, as if you're a man playing the fifth set at a non-US Open Grand Slam.)

First to six wins.  Coin flip to see who starts with first place.  Regardless of who wins, you alternate seating order.  You must win by 2 games.  Ties do not count and are re-played.

There's a non-zero possibility you end up with Isner-Mahut.  More realistically, that won't actually happen.

The reason we have never discussed this before, I suspect, is because there has never been a way to fix seating order until now.

Where the analogy breaks down is that different Kingdoms reward P1 differently.  It'd be like playing a tennis match that starts on clay and then switches to grass midway through the set.

What about a bid system, where both players bid a certain number of VPs to be player 1?

This is how my play group played paper Dominion for years. Depending on the kingdom, the winning bid was usually 0, 1, or 2. I think I saw a few 3s, and maybe one or two that weren't obvious mistakes. Perhaps 15% of games were decided by a margin of the bid.

Well, you can all breathe a sigh of relief: the scumbag deceptive cheating lying smarmy good-for-nothing asshat with terrible opinions that no one likes won't be representing y'all in Chicago.

I did record video of my loss, though, which you may be interested in. Here you go, and best of luck to ednever! He was a great sport throughout the entire ordeal.

Several more games up on my channel. They were all fairly straightforward, though I learned some good lessons. This is probably the most interesting one, with added tension because it was between me and ednever, who I will face in the finals playoff in 20 minutes!

And you can watch this one if you want to watch me get beaten hilariously badly.

Going to stream a few games, with a new quality setting suggested by Fabian, in preparation for the final playoff between myself and ednever at 10pm eastern tonight. I won't be streaming the finals, but I will post recordings shortly after.

EDIT: Not too sure if my stream is working. It seemed to be live during the game, but the recording hasn't shown up, and it's been a long time. Doing local recordings for now, and will upload to YouTube.

EDIT 2: Turned out it was fine, but I was an idiot and left the sound unmuted on my stream, so you get to hear everything twice on that one :/ Probably too annoying to actually listen to, but I thought it was an interesting game, so you can watch it here anyway. Did another one locally that you can watch here, and now I'm going to turn the stream back on!

Well, I'm glad you did go for it - makes it a more interesting game even if you did make some mistakes. I definitely think it was a viable strategy, and that you could have won.

I'll try out that xsplit setting, I think I fiddled with resolution a little but I don't know where I ended up.

If you want a $2 with your opening 3, you can influence their first buy by making them think you're going to buy a $5 on turn 2. That can be a pretty big deal.

Yay, more streamers!

What software are you using? You're getting MUCH better quality than I was able to with xsplit, and it would be really nice to have my stream look as nice as yours :)

I'm really enjoying watching your thought process! It's pretty similar to mine, but you think about enough things differently that I'm definitely learning.

EDIT: I really disagree with discarding that Gold to stables, though! You just needed to get to 5, and drawing 2 from Crossroads was pretty likely to get you at least a copper to fuel the stables, if not all the way to 5 (which it actually would have). And if it didn't, you still have the option of discarding the gold. All of those options seem easily worth the trade off of not getting to make your Crossroads better. Even if you did draw two more green cards, is drawing two MORE cards really that likely to do better than $3?

Well, if this has become a popularity contest, I sure won't win it. You've got me there.

On the other hand, I don't anticipate doing anything at Nationals, if I go, that would reflect badly on this community.

Um, on what grounds?

As far as I recall, no one in the long drama thread was even claiming that I did anything that deserved a  DQ, only that my ideals & beliefs were contemptible and moronic.
