Game Reports / My lost apprentice
« on: September 26, 2012, 04:01:40 pm »
Played this game just now and had something extremely odd happen. I opened apprentice/fools gold, and by the end of the game I had drawn my apprentice with an estate exactly zero times.

Personally I wouldn't limit the time at all. It's not a long game like Chess that can go on for several hours (and some long games like tennis don't have time limits), it's a very quick game - a time limit is really not necessary for dominion, just be generous with the scheduling times to allow/compensate for overruns. There's no need to be draconian about such a quick game.

What would you do when the time runs out? That person loses (a la chess)? It's a draw? You add up the current VPs even though they're not all out? None of those are very appealing and the run the risk of influencing the strategy, which would be terrible in my opinion.

I'm left wondering if you've never been stuck in a game with a griefer who is hoping to wait you out.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Opening Village

I'll occasionally open Farming Village or Shanty Town if its a heavy cursing game. Though I won't open Farming Village if the Curser is Sea Hag. :P

I had to think about that one for a minute before I got it  ;D

Game Reports / I think the trash is overflowing

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201208/18/game-20120818-062940-2a27498c.html

Just played (and lost) this game. Ended with 50 cards in the trash. Can we get some kind of special achievement for that?

Key cards: remake, apprentice and saboteur

Game Reports / Re: Duke deck with no Dukes
« on: August 14, 2012, 11:22:20 pm »
Were you to buy just 4 dukes, each duchy would be worth 7 VPs. Unless you think your opponent is going to race you on the remaining dukes and duchies, you would likely do better to stick with those. Purchasing a duchy with $8 is not wasting money when your duchy is worth more than a province.

On 2-5, I think copper IGG is not bad at all. I would definitely take IGG over Witch or Library. A jack on 3 or 4 for the extra silvers and curse trashing (though not estates here), and then push IGGs and gardens to the end.

If gardens run out early, both thief and bureaucrat have their virtues here.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Alternate (pure) VP Cards

Just a quiet reminder that, awful as they generally are, Great Halls are also alternate VP cards. (Since Farmland has been brought into things, I figure all green cards over on the left side should get a mention).

Lol.

I've won a few games like that, but I'm pretty sure none were with Grand Markets getting bought out.

Game Reports / Great Halls + Scouts = ????
« on: June 16, 2012, 05:03:49 pm »
I almost felt bad for my opponent, but I checked and he's got over 700 games logged (and a winning record to boot).

The funny part was that the only card that had any synergy with his setup was the one tribute I bought. I probably would have bought another or two had he not figured out the error of his ways.

Dominion Articles / Re: Merchant Ship
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:39:56 pm »
Poor merchant ship. You deserved the +buys, not Wharf.

MS would be WAY to strong with +buy. It allows for a consistency that is only really balanced by it's natural ability to only purchase one thing. Wharf, because it can draw itself and other cards dead, survives on it's + buy (although I would think it more balanced if it dud not provide that benefit as a duration).
Are you really trying to argue that MS with buy would be better than wharf as-is?
Looks like I need to go write the wharf article.

I think Wharf is too strong as-is. I think MS with +buy would be on par with Wharf.

The math on this is pretty simple. If the cards you would have drawn with wharf have a value equal to $2, then they would be the same (aside from any positive or negative value to general deck velocity). If their average value is less than $2, then a MS with +buy would be better; if greater than $2, then wharf would be better.

How often is the average value of two cards in your deck less than $2?

Also, it doesn't get any meaner than this... (apologies to Hiker)

You play a Swindler.
... You get +$2.
... hiker turns up a Trusty Steed and trashes it.

... You replace hiker's Trusty Steed with a Curse.

I've always wanted to pull that one off. Hasn't happened for me yet though. Always a danger when swindler and tourney are both out.

<SNIP>

The Top 5 List:
<SNIP>
Ironworks

Council room is kindof slow, so I'm not going to go hunting, but I'm assujming you're looking at % purchased?  Or is this win rate given avail?  Given the presence of IGG, I'm assuming its % purchased.

I would love to know who has Ironworks in their top 5 and to hear an explanation of why.

Someone who always ends up with gardens on their boards???

Despise:
Secret Chamber: nothing grinds a game to a halt like a game with attack cards and secret chambers

No particular love or hate for the other cards

IGG's should be bought early and often in pretty much any game in which they are not contra-indicated. If you have IGG's on a board with gardens and you start buying gardens first you'll have a very hard time buying either of them down the road.

16
...trash their provinces with bishops?!?!? You'd have to be pretty confident in your engine to turn 6 VP's into 5. I've won a couple of games now because of my opponents doing this. You would think the math would be fairly obvious.

This game seems like a sort of worst case scenario for misuse of potion play. I guess the $5 attacks looked SOOOOO tempting.

I have, at least once, confused masquerade and envoy when they were played by my opponent in a game when they were both present. It's pretty embarrassing to pass your opponent a gold when you thought you were making them DISCARD a gold.

My opponent ends the game with buying two colonies....and gaining 8 curses, after he spent the entire game mega-turning to king's court a thief and trash my entire economy.  It was not a fun game for me...it was even less fun for him to realize he lost by one point.

I opened Mining Village/embargo...WHAT?   He is a well above-average player.

grobstein defeated paulbaxter 4-2 (the 29-36 bracket in the Thief Division)

I won the first two, so it was a significant come from behind victory.

It's very likely a player going simple Big Money will beat you (2 Council Rooms+money). Your repeated playing of Council Rooms speed the game up considerably for the BM player. Your deck will of course be far superior but there might not be enough green cards left to take the lead again.
You may well be right. I wasn't so much making the case that my play was optimal per se, just that it was a better strategy than going for Universities.

Yet another example from today. This time with Market/Peddler/Conspirator synergy.

And before anyone else points it out, I noticed immediately after turn fifteen that I could have three piled it on that turn. And I probably should have gone with a market instead of a peddler on turn 6. I tend to get a little too excited about peddlers, especially on this sort of board where I know they are all going to go.

Some obvious synergy here between Farming Village, Festival, Pawn, and Council Room (plus Border Village). Going for University just seemed too slow for me. I guess I was right, since this was perhaps the quickest and most decisive victory I've had yet.
