Goko Dominion Online / Re: FunSockets Q&A - Part 2

But go to the public beta and now every click has a delay. It's not animations. It's communication.

Ideally when you're playing against the bot, you could have entire turns sent in one chunk. If your turn contains an "oops I hacked the system to make Platinum free" then it would reject it then. In multiplayer you want to see visible things, but certain things could still be faster, like the already-pointed-out picking-cards-to-Chapel. And what, if you aren't doing things that can be reacted to, you can group actions.

Thanks for the insight, Donald! Do you think the servers are not up to the load, or is something else going on? It seems like many games are able to handle very frequent communication between users' computers, so I'm wondering why that's not possible for Goko at the moment.

I'd prioritize (in this order):

- Dark Ages (more interesting cards than any other set IMO, and all the trashing interaction is a blast)
- Prosperity (several key combo cards, and big game-changers with Colonies/Platinum)
- Cornucopia (rewarding diversity leads to fewer boring games, and Tournament becomes a neat little sub-game)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Perhaps just try one of the recommended Intrigue sets? Or start with those and add in a few DA cards?

  • Victory Dance: Bridge, Duke, Great Hall, Harem, Ironworks, Masquerade, Nobles, Pawn, Scout, Upgrade
  • Secret Schemes: Conspirator, Harem, Ironworks, Pawn, Saboteur, Shanty Town, Steward, Swindler, Trading Post, Tribute
  • Best Wishes: Coppersmith, Courtyard, Masquerade, Scout, Shanty Town, Steward, Torturer, Trading Post, Upgrade, Wishing Well
Of DA cards, Mystic is probably pretty simple, sage is pretty straightforward too. Maybe Market Square and Junk Dealer. Hunting Grounds, Beggar, Armory.

Not sure if I want Saboteur, Torturer, and Masquerade in the first game - the first two can make people really frustrated and Masquerade may slow the game down too much via AP. But those lists can probably be adapted a bit, so thanks for the idea!

Haha, if it ends in disaster I'll be sure to let you know.

This is a tough pair of expansions to start new players out on, I think, especially if they're not experienced gamers.  Dark Ages is complex, and Intrigue forces them to make decisions before they understand the value and effect of their choices.  You'll want to go as simple as possible.  Things like Courtyard, Wishing Well, Harem.  Conspirator if you've got a Village too.  Good call on Armory and Marauder.  Bandit Camp.  Altar.  Hunting Grounds.  I would avoid trashing attacks early on.

Bottom line, though, is that those first couple games should prioritize fun over learning strategy, so don't necessarily include a card just because it's instructive.

Yeah, I think I agree with you - fun and not overly complex cards should be the focus, to get them interested. Even bad action chains (like the classic Village idiot) are kinda fun when you're starting out, so enabling that sort of thing seems like a good idea, and they can start wondering why it's not effective at some other time. Conspirator seems like a card that just begs anyone (even beginners) to try to make it work, and would probably be really satisfying to a novice when they activate it.

Gotta get'em hooked on this gateway stuff, before introducin 'em to some of that hardcore D, you know what I'm talkin' 'bout, Possession & Goons and all that sweet nasty. ;)

The plural of Wharf should clearly be Worf.

You shuffled 3 Worf into your deck. Gain a glass of prune juice.

Due to the fact that a lot of my gamer friends own a bunch of Dominion sets, I only have Intrigue and Dark Ages (which I mainly bought to fill in gaps in my friends' collections, and well, because Dark Ages is amazing). However, I've recently gotten a couple people interested in trying out Dominion for the first time. Two of them are somewhat casual strategy gamers (think Ticket to Ride, Race for the Galaxy), and one hasn't played much beyond the traditional stuff (Monopoly, Risk, etc.). Anybody want to suggest some good kingdoms with just these two sets that would be good for showing them the ropes?

Some cards I think could be good:

Steward - choices are fun, nice early trashing outlet (they won't trash prolly, but may notice me doing it)
Marauder - show the value of attacks and the suck of having bloated decks
Armory - gaining cards is fun, but this can also teach the value of clashing terminals, if they're gaining too many
Hunting Grounds - drawing cards is fun, but will teach another valuable lesson in terminals if they're drawing them dead
Mining Village - gotta enable an engine
Junk Dealer - will enjoy seeing the light bulb going off when someone figures out that the trashing is not a drawback

Any suggestions for cards and complete kingdoms would be welcome!

Are there any plans to implement the option to include a point tracker or deck tracker when starting a game (or joining an automatch)?

The best place is: http://funsockets.ipbhost.com/

Thanks, I take it you have to be registered to see anything? I sent in my registration, but I guess it has to be approved.

Was just playing a real-life Dark Ages game that was quite fun:

Squire, Forager, Market Square, Fortress, Ironmonger, Procession, Knights, Graverobber, Junk Dealer, Hunting Grounds

Game took a while, but everyone was going for different crazy combos and the trash stack was enormous by the end of the game. Forager was worth $3 pretty quickly.

It's supposed to go down a week after Goko launches.  I'm not sure whether or not this counts as the real launch?  Guess we'll find out.

So, it's been a week. Am I inclined to believe now that Isotropic will stay up at least for a little longer? Huzzah.

EDIT: OMG MY RANK TITLE IS SCOUT GET THAT THING OFF ME

I don't think a public beta counts as a launch, which is why Isotropic is still running. Good for us :)

Since the paid beta is already implemented, they really should sweeten the pot to participate. It could be something simple like: if you buy your sets during the beta test, you get 25-50% off. That would actually make me consider it, since I'll end up spending money if and when they've got the kinks worked out anyway.

But like others in the thread, paying money to be a beta tester is not very appealing to me.

Your asking that question in a thread populated by a goko person answering questions, even the one directly above you?

He seems to be playing the role of community manager / PR, and it may be more efficient to make bug reports directly to where the developers can see and deal with it. I doubt he wants to personally ferry every single bug report and issue to the software people himself.

So I wasn't in the private beta, but where is the most useful place to post bugs, suggestions, and such?

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Do we trust them with credit cards yet?
« on: September 23, 2012, 11:18:47 am »
Looks like they collect credit cards entirely through external merchant systems, so you don't have to trust Goko themselves. Similarly, I only log into Goko through Google, so I never have to give them a password to store in whatever buggy system they use.

(Is it possible they're doing passwords correctly now? Sure, it's not actually that hard to do. But I look at the rest of that registration system and figure that the parts we can't see have to be just as buggy.)

The question is not whether your money is safe, because that's out of their hands. The question is, do you trust them to give you your money's worth? Do you pay for a defective product now in the hopes that it will be better later? For me the answer is no.

Question about this, because I don't really know how logging in via Google/Facebook/etc work. When you do log in this way, what do they actually receive from the portal you're choosing to use? Your screen name and a confirmation that tells them "Hey, this guy really is blahblah@gmail.com, let him in"? Does anything remotely compromising get sent over?

Also, I agree with you about deciding when to pay. No need to pay now, on the hope that things will be better - might as well just pay when they are better. Luckily, we're still just in beta phase.

If you didn't intend that rule to mean 'Public Beta is okay', then what on earth was it referring to? I had presumed (and my vote very clearly indicates it) that a public Beta counted as a launch. Lots of things go from public beta to final product with basically only minor changes between the two, and some publicity.

The rule was supposed to clarify whether it would be the 2nd release, 3rd release, final release, etc. In the event that something like the first release happened, where they had to pull the plug again. I see that the wording was apparently not clear enough.

Anyway, a beta test shouldn't count as an official release. A lot of people (myself included) don't join public betas of games they're not particularly invested in because the bugs will detract or even ruin your initial playthrough of it. It's not finished, it's not something they'd send to press to review (maybe preview), and it's not something that casual fans would really want to put themselves through.

I will join this beta, because it's one of my favorite games, and am willing to help out if I can.

TDog wins?

Nope, it's just a public beta, not an official release. Though depending on how it goes, Tdog could be in good shape.

No, reread the TC's first post.

- Release is defined as when the game officially becomes available to the public for the second time (the first being in mid-August 2012), regardless of its condition or even if it needs to be taken down yet again.

It's a public beta, but it's officially available to the public, regardless of it's condition. Therefore, nobody wins.

That's quibbling, and you know it. The spirit of the contest is the official release, not a beta, public or otherwise. I'll edit the text so rules lawyers will be happy.

Will there be the ability for users to combine sets they own to play a game? For example, if I only had Prosperity and Hinterlands, and Ingrid only had Seaside and Intrigue, could we play a game with all four expansions?

I think this was answered before, and the answer was no.

I guess my question should then read: will there ever be the ability for users to combine sets to play a game?

Would they really release with obvious game-crashing bugs floating around? This has to be a public beta, right?

No, the predictions started on the 17th. That's less than 7 days before release.

Haha, good catch! If this is official (for the sake of online Dominion, I hope not), maybe they released early just to spite this thread ;)

Quote from: rules
- Prediction must be posted at least 48 hours before any official release announcement is made, and at least 7 days before the actual release.

Everyone rejoices in their shared loss!

Actually tdog would win with his prediction of September 29.

But since there has been no official announcement, and people have been reporting crazy bugs, this does not sounds like an official release. Seems like a mistake release, or a really clumsy transition into a public beta. Whatever the case, my faith in Funsockets Dominion is not exactly going up!

Um... my October date was highly pessimistic, not optimistic.

Relative to this predicting group as a whole, though, you're optimistic :)

What do you mean Black-Friday-question-mark? Oh, wait. I screwed up. Black Friday is the 23rd this year. Can I change my prediction?

Not that it matters too much, but I actually said Nov. 13. Go November realists!

Changed!

Personally, I think there's a case of blind leading the blind here. People voting November and beyond is pretty absurd, but because it's been happening, people are willing to do it because it doesn't look stupid any more.

Unless there's some major issue that arises, I don't see it not being out by the end of October. It's just, crazy if that happens.

You're right, I definitely think it's the case of the blind leading the blind. Having my opening post predict November 20 has surely had some effect (note that it's right near the median). But, seeing as a lot of us didn't make the beta, all we have to go on are the tidbits the testers throw us, the nature of software releases in general (just look at Valve), and the way the first release went.

All signs point to DELAY, especially since if they ship another buggy pile of manure, their credibility will completely vanish. If you're right and all the major bugs have been worked out, and they're just polishing it now, I'd love being pleasantly surprised in October. But it would be disastrous if they rushed this thing out again, and my later release date prediction actually indicates optimism at their unwillingness to cave in to a silly marketing deadline a second time if the product isn't ready.

Looks like the predictions so far seem pretty bifurcated between October/Essen optimists and December+ pessimists. Maybe that means the few November people are the realists... :)
