Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #5: Castles

The Haunted Castle, to me, looks like a cross between the older Castlevania castles and the King's Quest II Dracula's castle.

So I'm pretty sure there's a vampire inside.

Named Dracula.

What happens if you play Gladiator with an empty hand?

You get +$1 and trash a Gladiator from the Supply. No joke.

Because the player to your left failed to reveal a copy of... nothing?
You couldn't do part of the instructions, and neither could (s)he, because there was nothing to match. Pedantry at its best.

Dominion is beloved by pedants everywhere for this reason.

For what it's worth, I brought the whole "Apple won't let you do that" argument up to Goko and MF both, several times. I'm sure evidence of it exists on one of the many feedback forums, at least.

While a multi-page hand isn't new - isn't the fact that the cards on page 2 are the same on page 1 new? I haven't played on Goko in a long time, but still check in here to see if there's any news I'm missing, but I thought I remembered that the multi-page hand thing actually displayed cards that couldn't be displayed, but here it looks like it actually serves no function?

Really interesting card.  Obviously princing a throne room, spy, scheme (that would be really nice) or other such card is going to be amazing.  I would be careful about princing a masquerade or ambassador though
Even a Throne Room could be bad.

"Oh dang, I drew 4 Colonies and an Ambassador..."

Just so I am straight on the mechanics of the card:  The card you choose to set aside will be played at the start of your turn every turn, but you may decide not to set it aside (for whatever reason) and then that card just gets shuffled back into your deck.  The prince itself is forever out of play
I don't think technically you are allowed to not set it aside intentionally, but if it gets rid of itself (Hermit), you could not set it aside whether you wanted to or not, and the Prince would still be out of play, yes (by my reading, I'm sure someone will confirm or deny).

Guess the other question is '[when] will Goko get this?"

I don't expect soon, because implementing this correctly will require them to let you choose the order of start-of-turn effects. You want your Prince of Watchtowers to go off before your Wharf, but you want your Prince of Remodeling to go off afterward.

Nah, they'll just go ahead and implement it incorrectly.

Then I thought of playing four Highways and playing it on itself, but then I realized the first one would lose track of the second once it got set aside.

That's probably the answer to what I'm kicking around in the BGG thread. For a minute I thought double-Prince shenanigans might be allowed.

My guess is that disk monitoring was assumed to be set up, but was not. Easy to miss when changing tech teams wholesale, which it sounds like they did a number of times. It is a pretty basic thing you should have, though. I know every place I've worked in IT I've got an email when a disk on an important machine was at various percentages remaining space (25% remaining, 10% remaining, 5% remaining, etc).

Clearly DXV is sexist against his own gender. A penis-apologist, if you will.

Don't confuse gender with genitalia.

Contextually, they are the same in this instance. I'm using gender to refer to biological sex, not feminine/masculine traits.

- with unwarranted declines of payment

Someone be funny with this one.  There's fun to be had there.

Okay, okay...

In Soviet Russia, payment...

...no wait, wait, I got it...

...YOUR unwarranted payment was....

...no that's not it, hang on...

...your grandmother's declined....

...

...dang.

I got nothing.

you missed some step .. I am using add-ons and I like them,  I learned to use chancellor, and the other cards. the only one that I take off is saboteur, because with him the games are completely different.

Let me tell you, most games with saboteur shouldn't be all that different. There are some (but not all, by far) games where it is really useful. But otherwise, it's ignorable very often.

Unless there are three or more people playing. Then it is very hard to ignore if the other players pick it up.
I think that makes it more ignorable than ever. In 3+ player games, if they are sab'ing each other, they are doing the attacking for you. All you need to do is concentrate on your own game and hope the swinginess doesn't hurt too much. You may lose big engine parts, and not be able to make an engine, but if my two opponents are sab'ing, I can make a simple linear money deck with some straight forward big draws (or other interspersed key cards if no drawing is available) that will waste them. Unless of course one of them can make an engine that sabs every turn and then they dominate the other player's sab'ing. Then that's the reward of gambling on Saboteur I guess.

Keep in mind that the OP is communicating using a translator algorithm and probably won't recognize the sarcasm.

Yes, I get that. The sarcasm is for my morning enjoyment. It goes well with coffee.

I think the board as a whole has well documented that I'm kind of a jerk.

EDIT: for fun, I translated this post to Italian. "Sarcasmo" sounds like a new super hero.

Good job making sure there aren't any Villages available - you wouldn't want someone to be able to play 2 terminal actions in the same turn!

Well, at first I tried a few games with them, but man, new people couldn't see the strategy and it was so overpowered. Do you think I should burn my +1 action cards too? It is pretty boring to watch those Spy chains. They totally demolish me. I'm not sure there is a way to overcome them.

Man, I wish I would've seen this earlier.

Base: Village, Smithy, Council Room, Festival, Throne Room
Intrigue: Mining Village, Shanty Town, Courtyard, Bridge, Nobles
Prosperity: Worker's Village, City, Vault, King's Court, Rabble

Those are cards I refuse to play with. I don't even take them along to game night any more. In fact, I've used most of them for firewood.

Usually we just play a Kingdom with Copper, Silver, Gold, Estates, Duchies, and Provinces so one strategy doesn't dominate too much and people have lots of options.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko rating system

pinky:

Call the sides perpendicular to the river length x.  Then the side parallel to the river has length 60 - 2x.  The area of the enclosure is x(60 - 2x) = 60x - 2x2.  To find the maximum of that quadratic, we determine the derivative and find the zero of the derivative, which is the highest point on the quadratic because the squared term is negative.  So:

(d/dx)(60x - 2x2) = 60 - 4x

Find the zero: 60 - 4x = 0... which means x = 60/4 = 15 ft; that's the two perpendicular sides.  Then the parallel side is 60 - 2x = 30 ft.

Yep, that all looks familiar.

Thanks. I gotta get out of programming financial stuff. It's boring, and seeing stuff like this really makes me wish I had ended up in simulation programming, where you really get to flex your math muscles all the time.

Regarding figuring out the proper answer to the river/fence example - what is the proper setup? Assuming I could vary the lengths by 1 foot increments I wrote a quick script to find the maximum configuration which gave me 15, 30, 15 sides for an area of 450 square feet, but from a mathematical standpoint, what's the proper way to setup that problem? This seems like something I should know, but anymore when I have a math problem like this I find it easier to program something to find the answer for me.

I wonder how Donald X feels whenever a spoiler happens.  Maybe he plans all of them as a great big tease?

Always got the impression he didn't give a fig.

"If many plague maps in the game, try to go in the hunt for those cards or sufficient defense to not buy tickets at the beginning of the game on an unbridgeable gap to come."

Google translate, causing linguists' heads to explode since 1998 (when it was Altavista Babelfish).

My best guess was:
"If there are a lot of cursing cards in the game, try to buy them, or defensive cards so as to not take curses at the beginning of the game so that the curse gap does not become too large."

I think it's just general Dominion advice, not specific to Guilds. The real info nugget is the Butcher sentence.
