Thanks, that was a difficult topic to search for.

Dominion General Discussion / Traveller Spelling
« on: June 14, 2015, 11:45:58 am »
I just noticed that Traveller has two 'l's, which is the British spelling of the word. Rio Grande is an American company. Donald X. sports an American flag on BGG. Who chose the British spelling?

I have not searched through the other cards looking for other American/British words. Did I miss this before?

If a Warrior trashing Warrior makes you sad you could house-rule nerf Warrior to say "... and trashes it if it costs 3 or 4 and is not a Traveller." (or just not a Warrior)

I'm not planning on doing that, but i think it fixes a big Warrior complaint.

That's only reasonable if there's a clear set of rules/legal agreement that players have to agree to as to what constitutes cheating. It's not like he hacked the system. He just played his hundreds of imaginary friends over and over again. I don't remember clicking "I Agree" on a page that said I wouldn't do that.

We still use the randomizers for the black market deck.

Our group finds it amusing that you can tell when someone either has or is about to draw a black market card (we use the randomizers).

I could imagine using the regular backed ones, but I have 2 problems:
1) My cards are in a binder, including the black market randomizers (spread over ~10 slots). I don't want to have the take out the 'black market deck' every time when I'm not playing with black market. If not, how do i get the 10th card? Ideas?

2) I just know at some point I'll forget to pull one card from each pile when the game is over and replace them in the black market deck. Do it once, and mayhem ensues.

I'm not convinced that was a great idea. It looks neat, and I like the thought of feeding the scrying pools... maybe, but the ruins also do that without demolishing your buying power. Without +buy I'm not thrilled about the scrying pool deck, and I am a huge fan of scrying pool decks. That being said...

Scrying Pool + Cultists, supported by Crossroads, Spies, and 1/2 Scavengers is the way I would go.

I don't think anyone has posted a similar topic, sorry if I missed it in search.

So, you've decided to buy the online dominion cards. You spent ~$45 to get 540 gokoins, and are eyeing the megapack, which is very conveniently priced at - wait for it - 540. But, as some posters have alluded to, it's a trap! (insert amusing star wars meme here)

Some set-covering math has revealed the best way to buy your cards:

  • Intrigue at 70
  • Seaside at 70
  • Prosperity at 70
  • Super Pack 2 at 140, covers the next 3 expansions
  • Dark Ages at 110

Total cost, 460. So, you should not buy Super Pack 1 as far as I can tell, and it just flat out lies to you about saving 15%. You SHOULD buy Super Pack 2, but it doesn't save you 10%. And then get Dark Ages.

If you buy the Megapack, you get coins and zaps. Yay. 10 zaps and 735 coins. 10 zaps cost 700 coins (not gokoins), so you are getting 1435 coins. That's 'worth' about $10. For which you pay 80 gokoins. You can pay $7 to just buy 70 gokoins. And anyway, who's buying coins? It's not like the adventures are fun after you play the same thing 30 times in a row. At least the campaign mode of the slightlymagic.net implementation was interesting.

Summary: Goko takes your money and lies to you about how best to spend it. The honest best way to spend it is to buy some expansions individually, and one superpack. Because that's not confusing at all.  :o

Game Reports / Re: Why "playing around" is worth it

It even involved a strategy of remodeling coppers into Estates - which is usually a HUGE mistake.

Pretty sure this was not the important part of your strategy. Stables + Apprentice to make sure your Explorer meets your Province, then Apprenticing or Remodeling golds is nice and fast.

Start with Carcasonne. My wife is a big fan of that one, and she does not like worker placement games. Stone Age is pretty good with 2.

I like to say Nombo.

I can see it fine. It's embedded inline, and I can also click to download. Wheeee.

It generally looks like what I do. But I'm only a little OCD, so I'm not going to make a picture.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko is offensive to actual fans of Dominion
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:41:47 pm »
There are some big differences between a roundabout and a traffic circle. In summary, roundabouts are smaller and you are not supposed to change lanes within them, while traffic circles tend to be larger, may contain traffic lights(!), and you are supposed to change lanes to maneuver within them.

As to the actual topic, I also somehow find the idea of the goko implementation offensive. It offends my sensibilities that goko tried to replace a perfectly respectable implementation (isotropic) with their own version, and has so far failed fairly miserably. This costs $$, and aggravates the customer base. My efficiency node is throbbing with pain.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: olneyce's strategy
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:15:41 pm »
I think olneyce put +Action at the bottom of the list for a couple reasons:
a) n00bs overvalue +action (even after maturing past village idiot)
b) you rarely want to open or acquire them in the first couple rounds, whereas a weak trasher you might. maybe....
but I don't like that piece of advice either

However, you must remember that the most versatile engines benefit from all 4: +cards, +buy, trashing and +actions. You don't need them all, but the less that are present, the worse your engine will do.

Instead of a linear relationship, I have taught developing players to look at the game this way:
1) Are there are power cards (particularly cursers / ruinsers)?
2) Are the engine components there? +cards, +buy, trashing and +actions? Are they any good together?
3) Are there any gimmicks hiding on the board?

Taking all these points together, you can now develop your strategy for the game

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Golem + Scheme + 1 good action/attack
« on: November 18, 2012, 09:06:11 pm »
I am going to necro this thread to point out that Golem + Scheme + X = pirate ship is a hilarious good time.

Once you have this set up, you can buy estates or duchies with every buy, as you wait for your pirate ship to ramp up.

As others have pointed out, it is almost impervious to attacks, and is particularly crippling to an unsuspecting opponent. Against good opposition, it will probably be a pirate ship race.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Translations
« on: November 06, 2012, 08:13:09 am »
Oh, and "Urchin" = Orphelin (Orphan). Is it really a correct translation ?

Yes, one of them. Urchin originally meant hedgehog, and for a long time meant any person who looked or acted like a hedgehog. There's a long list from a couple sources: "hunchbacks, goblins, bad girls, poorly or raggedly clothed youngster, street children, elves or fairies with a prickly appearance"

Scrying Pool! Some silvers to start, probably at least one Cache iwith a 5 (especially with opponent bishops), golds whenever I can, 1 of my own bishops, into Grand Markets. Pick up many schemes along the way, and start bishoppnig away the silvers once the deck gets going. My ideal deck is full of scrying pools, schemes, grand markets, has been trimmed nicely by bishops, and has a few potions for vineyard buys once it's really humming. This would be a beast by about turn 15, but watch out for 3-piles.

No guarantee this is the optimal deck, but it sure is bunches of fun to play (which to me is more important in IRL 4p)

I think the best time to be allowed to double is after your turn, but before drawing your hand. This is the closest place I can think of that's an analog to right before you roll.

In backgammon, the 2x and 3x rewards for stomping your opponent can create a situation where you are 'too good to double', which wouldn't happen in Dominion. That's ok.

You shouldn't double with a small lead, you are too likely to get redoubled if luck is swingy. The correct time to double is based on match equity, and you can't just throw around any % chance of winning because of all the interdependent factors. It even 'costs' equity to double, in that having the option to double later is worth something. For instance, one province to go, you are up by <6, and you figure your opponent only has a 20% chance to get it, while you have 100%. It's the end of your turn... your probability of winning the game is 80%, but if you double right now, your opponent won't accept, increasing your equity to 1. Lesson: don't just double all willy-nilly at the start of the game.

You should accept a double with a >25% chance of winning. The offer is much more difficult to calculate.

For match play with friends, play to a certain # of points or for money.

For online play, a doubled or redoubled game could count as if you played 2/4/etc games for leaderboard purposes, simple as that.

Help! / Re: Witch strategy lost to Hagglers/Golems. What gives?
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:14:50 pm »
You took yourself out of the game in Turn 18 when you played a 2nd Golem, which only found Inn and discarded everything else. Your Inn reshuffled the deck, dooming you to 3 hands without any actions. Game over.

« on: October 05, 2012, 11:17:42 am »
The problem with starting out with Loan in a Goons game is that it may take you a long time to get the 1st Goons. If your opponent gets Goons first, even longer.

I think you could buy a couple Goons, then with a spare 3, buy a loan. Depends on engine potential and how far into the game we have to go.

Solid strategy: Swindler + BM

Fun strategy: Steward (+ Swindler?) into Shanty Towns, Wishing Wells, Great Halls, Conspirators and Bridges.

Rules Questions / Re: Inn + Stash
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:59:22 am »
The rules sheet on bgg says
"Whenever you shuffle your deck, you can choose where in your deck each copy of Stash that you have goes."

I'd liberally read this as whenever you use Inn, you can take all your Stashes (deck & discard) and place them where you like. But I doubt this was the intention...

I like Vlaada's game, but you have to be ready for a serious investment of time and brain power to learn the games and really get into them

Mage Knight is awesome, if you are willing to devote the time. I was. Solo or multiplayer, it rocks. AWESOME.
