Rules Questions / Re: Reveal question
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:39:57 pm »
While we're on this topic of revealing cards, do you reveal cards that you discard? For example, when another player plays a Militia or even during my clean up phase? It doesn't do so on Isotropic, but certain cards like Jester simply say "discard the top card" and assume it's been revealed.

You can also create an infinite loop with Cathedral if you have two in hand and continually put them on top of your deck, drawing the previous Cathedral with each Cathedral.

I've always wanted to try and play because it sounds fun, but I really don't want to go out and pay money for cards and such. Is there any cheaper way to play? Like, an online version or something?

Kind of a funny play I've never seen before.

Quote
   — Tydude's turn 21 —
   Tydude plays a Bazaar.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +$1.
   Tydude plays a Bazaar.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +$1.
   Tydude plays an Ambassador.
   ... Tydude reveals a Province.
... returning 0 copies to the supply.
   ... Helen00 gains a Province.
Tydude plays a Copper and a Gold.
   Tydude buys a Duchy.
(Tydude draws: a Copper, a Gold, a Silver, a Bazaar, and an Estate.)

All Provinces are gone.
Tydude wins!

In which I successfully Ambassador a Province to my opponent to run the pile out and win the game. :P

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Confusable cards

I once played a Masquerade, and, meaning to pass a Copper, clicked the first thing that started with a C. It was probably the easiest Colony my opponent's ever gotten...

Kirian I'm thinking of if dominion were designed to be a computer game from the very start.  The solution to your problem would possibly be "Don't print Menagerie".  Envoy also is less interesting design space when you could be building single click engines and fighting eachother through automatic Moats.  Things get fast.

I would never want to play this game. All you do on your turn is a single click? That sounds insanely boring and dull. No thanks.

7
You could bypass many of the problems with not being able to trust players. You could, for example, have a card that says "Each other player reveals their highest costing card from their hand" without having to make them reveal their whole hand. This also works for cards like Menagerie, which could no longer have you reveal your hand to the other players. You could also pull cards out of the deck without searching the deck. For example, "Put the highest costing card from your deck into your hand". Or, perhaps, "Put all your action cards from your deck on top of your deck".

And, perhaps most importantly, it could give you all the possible trashing combinations for when you play Forge! No longer will you have to add up every possible combination of cards from your hand, and then check the board to see what you get. Think of how much time will be saved!  :P

Is Wrath supposed to make the person who played it gain a Curse also? Because currently it does do that.

I think it's an interesting idea, but the basic rules of it need some work. I would make a new card type and get rid of the infinite curses, then we'll talk.

My brother and I do a bit of "And they call it a mine! A MINE!" which is from LotR.

Yes! That's it, thank you. I should really reread/watch those some time.

I'm not sure why, but we say a lot of the base cards as if they're Spanish words. So, Village is "vee-yah-ge", festival is "festeebal", etc. I'm really not sure how this started, since none of us speak Spanish fluently. Also, you have to pronounce Laboratory like "La-boor-a-tory". There's one member of our group who always sings "Pass the Dutchie" whenever someone buys a Duchy, and says "It's a MINE" whenever someone plays a Mine. I think that's from Lord of the Rings, but I'm not sure.

Here's a better question, why not simply make a new card type? It's not that you have any rules problem that would require a new card type, but remember that you always want to avoid player problems, like confusion. And these cards are really, really confusing. Plus, you can avoid the awkward wording of, "The Curse card gained cannot have a cost of 0", and "Everyone gains a Curse that isn't a Kingdom card". It's needlessly complex and should definitely be changed.

On Greed, as Donald X. says, you can do whatever you want with your fan expansions. But you're never going to see a targeted attack in Dominion, and I personally won't ever play with fan made targeted attacks. Also it should not be an attack for the same reason Ill-Gotten-Gains isn't an attack. And, actually, it's more broken as a targeted attack than if it simply attacked everyone. As a targeted attack, you're screwing one player over and everybody else is fine, while as a normal attack you hurt everyone equally. It's more power to the person who plays it, but now everyone has the same chance at it. Also, you can't guarantee there will be treasure cards in the trash, and if there are they're most likely going to be Copper so usually that's completely pointless. Also, you can't see other people's discard piles normally so you would need to add some sort of text in there like Counting House, but with opponents.

15
I think it's probably fairly balanced now, but it still feels so disjointed. There doesn't seem to be an overall theme to the card, it just feels like a bunch of effects. I suppose the estate gaining and +buy help 3 pile, but then why does it let you trash? I think you need to somehow streamline it a bit.

16
Well, this doesn't have to do with the estates, but what do you think of this variant?

You may trash a card. If you do, choose one: (+1 Card; +1 Action) or +1 VP.
When you trash this, you may reveal it. If you do, +2 VP.

The idea is you can choose to either self replicate or get the victory point. I didn't know how to express it without making it seem like there was three choices, so I put parentheses.

Pawn is baby of the family.

Along with lighthouse.

18
Monument is +2$, +1VP @ 4$ with no defensive reaction at all. I think based on that, you can make an argument that Hero is fine as is, at 3$. I think a lot of full-defensive cards suffer a bit on the board when there's no attacks.  Still, let's add a little something to it, see how everyone reacts. I'll post the new card shortly.

Hmm, that's an interesting discussion. Should defensive cards be on par only when there's attacks and underpowered otherwise, or should they be on par normally and stronger when there's attacks? Based on the actual cards I'd say it's more the former, but it's still a good question to think about when designing reactions.

19
Good to know, thank you rink and pops. I'll adjust the card to something similar to what pops suggested. I'll remove the "gain Estate" function and add it to another card. Much, much obliged to all of you for your help as always.

Are you going to replace it with something? Because just +1 VP sucks when there's no attacks.

Witch's Brew ($5) - Action

While this is in play, when you buy a card with a Potion in the cost, gain a copy of it.

It's the Potion-version of Talisman. I think it's impossible to price, though: make it cheap and Familiar races become even more unbalanced; make it expensive and it's easier to buy an extra Potion. It's too swingy depending on which Potion-cost cards are in the Kingdom, and it makes Vineyards races even more ridiculous.

And when there's no potion cost cards in the kingdom, it's the worst card in the game! Yay!  ;D

22
My gut reaction is that it's probably too strong. Compare it to Moat. +$2 and trash a card, or +2 cards? I would either remove the reaction or remove the "you may" clause, so that it's just, "+$2, trash a card from your hand". Speaking of which, it should say "trash a card from your hand" instead of just "trash a card" or "trash a card in your hand".

23
You already have enough in hand to buy a Grand Market and another 5 cost card. You consider buying Inn, however, you don't know if what you have in your discard pile is worth buying an Inn for, or if you should just take a Duchy.

I'm enjoying the Granding it up thread. I was thinking about what other restrictions you could put on a "Grand" card, but no copper really seems like the most interesting and the one with the most effect. How about no non-treasure sources of money (i.e. no +x$ cards)? What else would be interesting?

I always wanted to see some sort of Farmer's Market, as if from Cornucopia. The penalty would be something along the lines of, "you can't buy this if you have any duplicate treasures in play".

I have the same problem too, and not just with firefox. I just tested it with Internet Explorer and got the same problem. Anybody else?
