Dominion General Discussion / Re: vassal isn't herald
« on: January 31, 2017, 10:56:38 pm »
Vassal is also a Herald variant. All three cards have in common that they prefer action cards and thus automatically also action cards that provide payload (respectively in the case of Vassal, are in themselves an action card that provide payload and potentially can be non-terminal).
If you had high action density, you wouldn't get much use out of the deep deck inspection that Golem offers, so I don't see that it "prefers actions" as vassal and herald do.

The UK flag equates to "English-speaking", not the UK, in this instance.

And in many other instances, which irks me. Can't they just pick the English flag?

That would be a rather strange choice.

Game Reports / Re: Venture vs. Witch always wins?
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:53:19 pm »
I got the cutpurse as a means to get to $5 and keep him from getting $5; is this not reasonable justification?  I used to always skip cutpurse until I saw MQ get it in his vids...  As for courtyard, I always seemed to have more than $2 but, I guess it could have been purchased on a $3 or $4.  I'm sure this deck is another case of small misplays early cause big effects later.
Q: how many f.ds'ers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: it depends on the kingdom.

Cutpurse is good at stopping the opponent from hitting $5 early on;  I haven't done the math, but I'm pretty sure it's better than militia for this.  The problem here is that witch is the most important card for your deck (early on), so cutpurse quickly becomes a burden.  Courtyard is less of a problem collision-wise and is far superior to cutpurse for hitting $8 later on (at which point cutpurse hurts also hurts less).

Learning to evaluate a card in relation to the rest of the kingdom is one of the keys to improving your play. Knowing how strong each card is in general is just the first step.  Cutpurse can be a strong opener, but courtyard is a better opener here because it plays better with witch early and it is stronger late.

Game Reports / butcher/rats vs goons/gardens

I just won this game with a strategy that feels way too fancy.  butchering rats into spy hardly seems like a winning strategy?  Did my opponent just draw poorly?  (note that necropolis makes my plan slightly less insane.)

If we ignore rats, I don't think opening WV is any good. I'd open silver/silver aiming for margrave and village in the first reshuffle.  Opening with a village iswithout some specific plan besides, "I will need villages later" is usually a mistake.  I mean, the exceptions to this "rule" are many, but here you need to hit $5 to get your draw cards, and that means you need silver.

Masquerade also matches up badly against vault so this is a kingdom where you can skip masquerade.
I'm not sure what you mean.  Like, if your opponent plays vault, you won't be able to get the full use of the bonus sifting? My thought was that the thinning would help you find your vault(s) and match them up with silvers and golds, which would be good against militia.

replace https with http.  i dno't know why this hasn't been fixed, as it's been wrong for a while, but the workaround isn't too cumbersome.

My opponent opens copper/vault, and I open masque/militia.  (Copper?  Copper???)

Other than the copper, I think my opponent played pretty well, although he probably wanted to get a militia on T6.  I just wanted to highlight the game because the open is non-obvious, and it was a fast, money-focused game with interesting tactical decisions.  I think masque militia is correct against a vault open, but anway, i like the kingdom.  A lot of anti-synergy.

T8, I get a gold rather than province.  It's right before a shuffle, but I tend to think that this "right before a shuffle" business is a trick we play on ourselves.  It matters, but I think it's very easy to overestimate how much it matters.  However, I'd bought 2 golds, two silvers, plus masque, Militia, and Vault at that point, and I felt i needed the treasure.  I suppose I would've had the opportunity to get more later.  Your thoughts?

The end had me getting the penultimate province, which meant he'd lose on turns if he got the last province.  He'd passed me an estate in the early end-game (T12) - he could've passed silver and still had an assured province.  Looks like he had some super clumpy money there.

agree that bishop looks good - yet another payload.  I'm also liking how black market rewards you for having treasure in the deck.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: More Kingdom Design: Very Fast Kingdom
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:27:08 pm »
Uncontested, Cultist would probably obliterate the engine.  Mountebank is another possibility, but I don't see it as really enabling any kind of alternative strategy without a village to enable some kind of terminal draw, possibly embassy (nice for junking silver), smithy, or oracle.

Rabble engine, even with IW+village, by itself is far too slow to contend with highway/market, so you want some other draw card.  So you could add Monty, Witch, vanillage/fishing village, in place of rabble, rogue and stone.  I mean, I still think there's only one strategy in that case, monty/witch into market/highway, but it's trickier to time your buys and with curses running end-game tactics are much more of a thing.

Herbalist, Masquerade, Moneylender, Sea Hag, Trader, Worker's Village, Graverobber, Library, Market, Upgrade, + Estateshttp://dominionlogs.goko.com/20150114/log.516d33dbe4b082c74d7b39fa.1421258882538.txt

Had a fun game here with an interesting kingdom.  With Masque on the board, Hag is basically out, at least until end-game.  Library and Masque were the only draw, but Library has some good support here, with moneylender, hag, and, most notably, graverobber.  GR provides an alternative payload.  In the end, Moneylender saw hardly any play, and treasure won the day with 4 WV's (to be precise, the winnnig deck was a draw engine with treasure as payload and a bit of GR for end-game control).  Among the things to like about this board are that you basically can't open Sea Hag, but it might become useful later on, at least as an upgrade target, plus it does reduce handsize.

After we played, theblankman and I discussed the kingdom, which we both thoroughly enjoyed.  We basically agreed that you need some gold in ur deck.

We talked about things that would make the kingdom more interesting.  The most obvious things are that the herbalist and the trader have no place in any reasonable strategy here, so they're out.  What do we put in?

Masquerade is v powerful here, but it always is, and we thought if we took it out Moneylender would shine.  Upgrade makes Moneylender much more viable - even getting a secnod one isn't terrible if you hit duoble 4 on the first reshuffle.  Second, a good non-terminal $4 helps upgrade a lot.  Mining Village works pretty well - you can trash it and then regain it with GR and seed your next hand with a village in the meantime.  (This isn't super powerful or anything, it's like village+silver+scheme, but it's an option.)

So, Masque out and and MV in, still leaves two slots open.  Two reasonable options would be oasis and oracle.  Alternatively, you could replace the MV with hamlet and then add caravan or spy or something.

is it possible to represent these data as some kind of function like, difference in likelihood of purchase/number purchased as a functino of difference in rank?  These correlations seem hard to interpret.

(does anyone know why people talk about explaining X% of the variance and not the deviation? why is [unit^2] more meaningful than [unit]?)
