General Discussion / RPG Party Puzzles
« on: June 20, 2019, 04:39:03 pm »
For the last two years, I've been responsible for creating a "puzzle hunt" for a local board game convention. The hunt consists of various puzzles on posters scattered across the convention area, with a meta-puzzle on a handout given to con attendees. It's been great fun, and last year I came up with a puzzle that uses a party of RPG heroes to defeat a villain. This puzzle format has a lot of potential and I think f.ds folks might really enjoy it! (Puzzles are in attachments.)

Within these puzzles I tried to keep things relatively tame and easy - I don't want to waste hours or even too many minutes of con-goers time working on these puzzles, and I want them to be accessible to kids and people who aren't super into puzzles. But designing these has made me realize that this is a rich and fun medium for puzzles. There are a ton of variables to change - obviously damage & HP values, but also # of heroes, # of rounds, how the villain attacks, not to mention special characteristics of the heroes and villains. There's lots of room for red herrings and tricky interactions.

So if anyone else feels inspired by this and wants to make their own version (text-based, probably? Unless you're feeling fancy), this would be a great place to share them!

Slightly-harder mode for these puzzles is to figure out the full order (though you probably have to do that anyway to confirm your answer)
Solutions:
Dragon: Shiva
Vampire: Psysmic

Finally, if you'll be at TokenCon 2019 in OKC, you'll see the vampire puzzle there! :D

Edit: If people are on mobile and it's easier to see this online, here are imgur links:

The first "Random Deck" game, from Richard Garfield, is being officially launched today. It seems like it could be be really big.

I've been able to play a few games with test decks and have loved it so far. It seems a little strategically light, but I think the dynamic of learning a deck and its nuances will be a fun journey. And when the game actually releases, it'll have all the fun of buying boosters and chasing cards with none of the work of deckbuilding.

Plus, the algorithmically-generated names are interesting, and sometimes pretty hilarious.

Anyone else planning to play?

Edit: Names are generated from an algorithm, not full random. An algorithm that needs a few adjustments.

Other Games / Mobile MOBAs
« on: August 27, 2018, 05:45:42 pm »
I've been playing League of Legends casually for just under a year, and a few months back I discovered Arena of Valor, a mobile MOBA from the parent company behind League. I was surprised by how well they translated the MOBA experience into a quick but satisfying mobile format. After playing quite a bit of AoV, I discovered a new mobile MOBA, Onmyoji Arena, last month. It has a very cool and cohesive Japanese art style and the character design seems creative and smart. I'm extremely impressed and it has pretty much replaced AoV since finding it.

There are a few other big mobile MOBAs out there - Vainglory, Mobile Legends - but I haven't played any others. Anyone else play these games, especially Arena of Valor or Onmyoji Arena?

Other Games / Apprentice Print and Play!
« on: August 25, 2014, 06:07:22 pm »
This summer I've been working on designing and testing a game. I ran it as a forum game on here a couple of times (one game is ongoing) and I mentioned in this thread that it was recently selected as a finalist in the Korea Board Games annual board game design contest. Well, while the game may still undergo some (hopefully mostly) minor changes, I am ready to make it available here as a print and play!

The idea of the game is that each player is a sorcerer's apprentice trying to learn spells and create potions to gain the most victory points within 24 hours (rounds). The game is built around a core mechanic I'm calling breadcrumbing; with every action you take, you leave something behind that makes that action more powerful-and more expensive-in the future. It's a mechanic that works very well, and the game as a whole is tactical, strategic, and really fun (if I may toot my own horn).

Apprentice accommodates 2-4 players and takes about 15 minutes per player. I'm working on a variant for 2 players that should up the strategic ante. Outside of the print and play files, some components will be needed. They're detailed at the top of the rules. There are a fair few components needed, especially with more players, but they are really generic; you could even use colored pieces of paper for many of them.

A lot of people have contributed to this game, I want to especially thank the people who've playtested on here as well as pacovf! I'd be happy to run another forum game if there was interest.

Let me know what you think!

Game 2 Spreadsheet

Apprentice is a game recently designed by me!

It's a resource collection game in which the actions you can take are determined by a moving/blocking game on a grid of tiles. The actions you can take grow stronger-and more expensive-the more times you use a certain building. The goal of the game is to get the most VP by creating potions and learning spells.

This game is still being playtested but I think what it needs at this point is refinement and balancing; overall I'm pleased with how the game is functioning on the whole. The game will be played by spreadsheet and either QT or PM (whichever you prefer) for the limited amount of hidden information. I haven't playtested with 4 players yet, I'm pretty sure it will work, but I'm gonna limit sign-ups to 3 for now.

Sign-ups:
1. mail-mi
2. Jotheonah
3. Ashersky

The rules are attached. When you sign up, pick a color to use for the game. Let me know if there are any ambiguities in the rules or if you have any questions. If any of the players or observers have comments or suggestions for the game or the rules, please let me know. I won't require the players to give feedback but I'm very, very appreciative of any thoughts that you can offer. I won't make any changes during the game (ok, it's extremely extremely unlikely) but I definitely might make changes for future games.

Advertisements / Literary/Visual Arts
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:12:13 pm »
I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned on the forum before, but I'm an amateur photographer and (sometimes) writer. I love nature photography and macro photography best, although I live in Oklahoma for 8 months of the year, where I sadly feel pretty uninspired. Luckily, it just makes those 4 months in the beautiful Northwestern US even sweeter. :) I shoot with a pretty basic Nikon D5100 that I got a few years ago before studying abroad. Traveling and photography are two hobbies that work beautifully together. Several of my friends are amazing photographers and have helped me grow and learn more about photography in college. I've even won a couple of awards!

I've also dabbled in writing fiction and poetry. I wish I could write more, but I feel like good ideas are pretty scarce for me and sitting down to think of something is usually just not a priority for me. However, I did complete one short story last year that I'm pretty proud of, which I've attached for your reading pleasure! I know there are other writers on the forum, so I'm interested to hear about what inspires you, what you like to write about, and any current projects you're working on.

Now, for the reason this is in advertisements: for the last three years I've been indirectly involved with my college's Literary and Visual Arts Journal, Soundings. Submissions for this year's journals just ended a few days ago and the students in charge are working on fundraising to cover the costs of printing. They've started a kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1939436558/soundings-a-creative-anthology-for-students-by-stu and are almost a third of the way to their goal. I don't know how many patrons of the arts we have on the forum, but I figured there just might be a few!

Like I said, I've been involved with the journal for several years, so this project means a lot to me (the story above was even awarded 1st prize in fiction by the juror!). The people in charge this year are good friends of mine and I know that they'll do a great job keeping the journal's standard of quality high. This is a great chance to get a copy of a truly excellent creative anthology, one that will hopefully be featuring yours truly!

Variants and Fan Cards / Variant - Dominion with a board
« on: December 27, 2013, 01:10:48 pm »
I thought of an interesting variant based on discussions I've been reading comparing Dominion to other deckbuilders. This variant adds an element to the game that I hope will change the strategic landscape of the game without adding much extra complexity or changing most of the core gameplay. I'm very curious to hear input from the community about this variant. What's good, what's bad, what tweaks should be made?

The main changes in this variant are the addition of a board with scorekeeping spaces (a bunch of eurogames are perfect for this, and a pen and paper would work just as well) and changing the text of the supply VP cards to say: "+1 Action; Move X spaces." Where X is the number of VP the card is worth. The game would end when a player reaches a certain number of spaces, let's say 100, or when piles run out.

I would suggest a few other rule changes:
-Curses would be a one time, one space setback (when the curse is gained) and would then essentially be confusions in your deck.
-VP tokens are tricky. Making them one-shots significantly weakens them, so my suggestion would be that every time you gain a VP token, you move spaces equal to the number of tokens you have. This makes these cards super strong when they appear together, but oh well.
-Alt VP would need to be reworked or scrapped. I'm not sure of a solution to keep them remotely balanced, but there might be something out there. For example, Gardens could be: "At the end of the game, do this twice: Move 1 space for every ten cards in your deck." It could be a nice catch up card.
-It's possible that the supply VP cards would need to be more expensive to keep some semblance of balance.

Effects on the game:
-Huge impact on strategy. The specific number of spaces needed to end the game should be balanced to give various strategy archetypes a fighting chance without forcing the game to last too long. Anyway, the addition of a board opens up new strategies focused on playing your VP more often, and also would impact building and playing for both big money and engines. Sadly, megaturns may not be as viable unless they use VP tokens or alt VP.
-Cursing becomes weaker. Mildly so, but a single curse early in the game is much more than offset by a single estate over the course of the game. Confusions still hurt though.
-Consequently, looters become stronger relative to cursers. Curses and ruins become more similar, and that could make cards like Cultist a must-buy.
-Trashing is likely a bit weaker. A thin deck is still very desirable, but estates are definitely pulling their weight more here!
-Filtering changes depending on the circumstances: you probably never want to discard a province, but sometimes you may want to dig for one.
-As written, these new VP cards combo with TR/KC and I'm not sure if that's good or even ok. Likely a very strong interaction.
-Weakens Rebuild
-Combos with Scout!

Let me know what you think!!

Other Games / Forum mafia-inspired mafia
« on: November 07, 2013, 01:21:47 am »
After a couple of fun games of The Resistance tonight, one of my friends had what I think is a terrific idea: expand mafia to include a timeline more like forum mafia. Play a game of mafia over many days, with all interactions being fair game. Each day could be a normal day and night occurs each night. There would be one mandatory meeting for all living players each night to vote and lynch, followed by a couple hours where the mafia can discuss via text, etc and discuss their target, which would be sent to the mod the same night.

I think it would be important to prevent the mafia from essentially having daychat by forbidding them to discuss the game in private. Other than that, I really want to hear your suggestions. Would it work? What numbers would work best? Any roles or specific formats we should think about including? Any other special considerations for a game of this type?

We're pretty sure this is gonna happen soon, we thought the forum would be the perfect place to work out the details!

Game Reports / ZOMG THIS 4-CARD COMBO IS SOOO BROKEN!!1!
« on: June 27, 2013, 06:10:17 pm »
Ok, not really.

But I did get a pretty awesome rush earlier when I identified it and then (basically) pulled it off.

Everyone knows that Baker can allow you to open double Treasure Map. And then if you have Doctor on the board you can overpay with your quadruple-gold hand and trash pretty much the rest of your deck! And when your deck is nothing but 4 Golds, Doctor, and Provinces, Journeyman (skipping provinces) nearly ensures that you'll find the $8 needed for another Province!

So that was the gameplan. And then what do you know? TM collision turn 3!! Things were going swimmingly.

It doesn't work perfectly, I miss $8 a few times as expected and end up buying 2 Journeymen and a few more Golds to make everything run smoothly. But 4 provinces by turn 8 guys!! Having TM collide turn 3 I think sealed the win, but with perfect shuffle luck this deck could have drained provinces startlingly fast.

Help! / What....what on earth happened here?
« on: February 12, 2013, 07:37:10 pm »
First let me say, I made a lot of mistakes here. I really didn't play that well. But after my opponent's turn 3, I thought this would be a game where I could mess around, build a silly engine, and power up Fairgrounds. Boy was I wrong...

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201302/12/game-20130212-161110-98768ed9.html

Ok, turn three, my opponent uses the awesome Silver/Silver/Copper/Copper/Copper hand to...buy a Farmland, turning a copper into an estate. Haha, ok this game will be a breeze.

The only possible reason for doing this (unless he was just learning the cards or something, and he was level 18 or something) was to power up Trade Routes, of which I already had one! I was going to use it to help thin into a Menagerie engine. When I saw him do this, I should have immediately reacted and bought more Trade Routes, but oh well. His deck seemed like it was going nowhere so I could have fun buying some random engine components, I would have time since his deck was bound to be crap soon.

But then he bought a few more trade routes and started ripping through Provinces! Trade Route was worth +$4 pretty quick and ignoring it as much as I did was stupid....but seriously, his final deck had 5 coppers and 1 silver! How was that enough money to enable Trade Route SO often...6 Provinces, almost one per turn from turns 11-17!

Other Games / Other Enginey Games
« on: December 29, 2012, 01:46:09 am »
I posted this on the BGG forums but I tend to trust all of you better anyway. :P

Dominion is one of my favorite games, I play a lot online and with the cards. I especially love engine-building and playing out those engines, I love a turn that feels big and chain-reactiony. I adore awesome combos.

I'm also looking to round out my game collection a bit.

Games I really enjoy and either own or have easy access to:

Dominion (and multiple expansions)
Race for the Galaxy (and The Gathering Storm)
Cosmic Encounter
Puerto Rico
Stone Age
Carcassonne
7 Wonders
Pandemic
Smallworld
Power Grid
Kingdom Builder
Escape: Curse of the Temple
Tikal
Settlers
King of Tokyo

I've played Trajan and Dominant Species once each and enjoyed both a lot. I'm probably forgetting some things here.

I'd like to buy something that can fill a gap in my collection, and I've been hoping for a while for something that can give me big and meaningful-feeling turns like a Dominion engine.

Unless you have a really good case to make, I'm not interested in the Dominion clones like Thunderstone, Ascension, and Puzzle Strike. I AM, however, interested in other types of deck-builders, like perhaps Netrunner. Glory to Rome and its little bro Innovation look pretty interesting, I think I like the feeling of things being a bit out of control crazy, as long as the insane power of my combo is matched by the mind-blowing power of yours.

Other than those, I'm not sure where to look, but I'm interested! Tableau-building is alright but I don't think I want to go much more complex than RFTG (it's fine for me, but I like playing with other people!).

Bonus points (but not at all requirements) if a game:

-Is space efficient. I'm a college kid, and man, they don't give us big tables.
-Plays in a reasonable amount of time. I'll mostly only be able to play 90+ minute games 4.5 months of the year.
-Can reasonably be taught to non-gamers. Let's call them not-yet-gamers.

Game Reports / Two Awesome Engine Boards
« on: December 26, 2012, 07:26:34 pm »
I just played 2 games with amazing engine potential. I was a bit distracted and played really sub-optimally in both, but I'm trying to climb the leaderboard before iso goes down and my engine play needs improving.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/26/game-20121226-154448-0fd353d9.html

In this game I was definitely outplayed. I should have gone for Bishop at some point for trashing, but I'm never sure when it's right to pick up Bishop. I think that Hamlet/Watchtower/Warehouse/Grand Market should have been the center of my engine, but I didn't pick up enough of the first 3 till it was way too late. Haggler and Monument, I think, were good support, but I focused on them too much early. But this board is super interesting, with almost every card coming into play.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/26/game-20121226-160916-eff6c9c7.html

I'm so bad at Governor games. With Governor and King's Court, Governor definitely looms large here, but because it's a colony game, it's not so so dominant. The first half of my game here was really ugly. I like develop's synergy with Governor/Gold/KC/Province/Platinum but I didn't use it well (especially turn 12 or something, where I missed a chance to develop gold into a topdecked Governor/KC). Fortunately I pull this game together in the end. I have enough of a lead that my opponent doesn't appear to have enough to end the game in a win on his last turn, though he sure sets me up for a megaturn. I do get a big time megaturn, emptying 3 piles and getting 50 points on my last turn. But there's no way I would have won this against a better player.

I thought these sets were super interesting, and my play was not great. Which strategies were dominant on these boards? How could I have improved my play? Especially, which order should I be picking up engine components here?

Game Reports / Weird, fun board
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:35:18 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-115138-9ff9f647.html

This board was pretty weird. Colony game. No +buy, the only gainers were HOP and Expand (and BV sorta). Bank was pretty nice with Counting House but lacked the buys. I think KC was weaker than usual because it didn't have any real prime targets, and the same was true with BV. Cartographer and Navigator messed with the top of the deck in ways that were often confusing. And not really any good BM cards.

We both got off the ground really slowly, and I think the first half of my game was rubbish as I was trying to figure out what I could do with this set. A lot happier with the second half, even if the only reason I was able to sneak from behind for the win was because my opponent had a terrible turn.

What's the best strategy on this board?

Help! / I am so bad with governor
« on: December 01, 2012, 05:51:10 pm »
I just cannot seem to wrap my mind around governor games. I actually don't remember ever winning a straight-up governor game, which this was. Anyway, I got some nice luck by opening Nomad Camp/Governor and then my opponent had some nice luck with a turn 4 mint.

I just couldn't hit 7 for the longest time, which was really unfortunately because governor is a great target for KC and because KC are awesome governor trashing fodder. Still, I won the Governor split but couldn't seal the deal.

My turn 11 is of particular note because I was actually just $1 away from being able to gain a province and two duchies (I think this would have still caused me to lose on turns). As it was, I could remodel the gold into the last province, remodel a silver into a duchy, and have just enough to buy an island, but that would have lost me the game either on turns or if julloulu could remodel for points. So I opted for drawing, but I drew pretty badly.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/01/game-20121201-143919-bd506b2f.html

Was there anything I could have done better anywhere?

P.S. I just had a weird thought. Is nomad camp/mint ever a good opening? Probably not here where you want to hit $5 fast, but it could be interesting.

Bastard Mafia rules blatantly stolen from Bastard Mafia I.  Changes are in blue. Additional changes are in orange.

Mafia Ruleset (blatantly stolen from Axxle, as always)

Game Rules:

General Gameplay and Etiquette:
1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it. Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.

3. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline. If I do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions. Or I might pick them for you. In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 48 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.
7. You may ignore rule 1.  Regarding rule 2, see role PM.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:
1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. This game will have 2 week 5 day ~1 Week deadlines (but see the Role PM), with 24 hour Night deadlines. If a player or No Lynch does not have a simple majority at Day end, no lynch will occur, and the game will go into night.
8. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
9. Do not edit or delete posts. We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.
10. You may ignore rule 8.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:
1. Bold, blue text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mod privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity. A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement Modkill. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement Modkill without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
7. There may be a few more rules I forgot to mention here...I think you guys will pick up on them. Still, the rules will be very strictly enforced!!!

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get too personal, and enjoy the game.

Other Games / A cool thing happened to me...

I found a $20 gift card to Target that I hadn't used!! ;D (Well actually I used 40 cents of it once, not sure why... ???)

Back on topic, I have this awesome gift card and any time I get any sort of gift card or monetary gift the first place I want to put it is towards games. I wasn't expecting much out of Target but their online selection of games is actually decent. So I'm trying to decide between a few...

The Resistance. I've followed all the forum games and this looks pretty fun and pretty solid, especially IRL. I think it could get a lot of plays and could interest some of my friends who are much much more casual gamers.

Bang! I didn't know about this game until I saw it mentioned in the "other board games as good as Dominion" thread, so when I saw it here I was intrigued. I've researched it a bit but I'd love to know how people think it stacks up against Resistance as a group game.

Seaside. I own Dominion, Intrigue, Prosperity, and Dark Ages, but aside from Guilds we all want to pick up Seaside next. I'd have to pay about $8 out of pocket but it's still a screaming good deal for an expansion. Problem is we don't play as often as we used to, Dark Ages is still pretty new to us, and each expansion makes the game a bit more of a hassle to set up and take down. But I think it'd be worth it because we all looove durations.

I guess the wildcard would be Dixit: Family because Dixit has interested me for a while, but this doesn't appear to be a normal edition. Dixit: Family didn't have an entry on BGG so I'm not sure if it's a weird family-friendly version (seems like the original game is already good for families) or if it includes the whole "family" of games with all the expansions.

What do you guys think?

Dominion General Discussion / The best kind of megaturn!
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:35:10 pm »
For me, megaturn engines are some of the most fun and satisfying strategies to pursue. It's not always possible, but when all the components are there, you know you're in for a fun ride.

So what kind of megaturn engine do you find most fun? Give me more choices and I'll add them to the list!
