I'm a massive fan of science, and of space. But some of these proposed exbitions are getting silly now.

Take this one, about putting a submersible on Titan!
http://www.space.com/28589-titan-submarine-robotic-saturn-ship.html
What is that actually going to learn that will be useful?

Instead that money should be rerouted to space missions with tangible successes, like putting people on Mars.

Treasure Hunts / Playtesters needed - Making a Treasure Hunt
« on: February 09, 2015, 04:29:29 pm »
So its my birthday soon and I shall be *COUGH COUGH*

I am intending to write a little treasure hunt/train/whatever thing for a group of friends around London.

Basically I need people to try out the puzzles, suggest a new type of Puzzle (i am one short) and basically chip in with ideas.

I'd say it is 75% done.

So first off, some feedback:
If you were to take part in a Treasure hunt where you followed a series of clues across London:
How long would you like it to take (So Im looking for a variable here, quickest time possible, and longest reasonable time)
How many different puzzles/stops?
How far would you think is a reasonable distance to cover? (Via Walking, but there will be some hot tube action)

As it's now gone midnight here in the UK, and we all know the UK invented time, that means it is now officially Christmas everywhere!

You have my permission to start opening presents!

Have a good time for the next few days everyone (yes, even Galzria!)

General Discussion / Moral quandry....about travelling to work
« on: May 07, 2014, 06:35:18 pm »
So, if i get the train to work i get there at 8:58, but i dont get home till 7:10
If i drive to work i am often delayed by bad traffic and dont get in till 9:15 ish, and often the car park is full and i have to go to the overflow which is another 10 minutes. BUT i get home at 6:45

What to do, what to do.

Now the obvious amswer is just drive, screw it. However it doesnt really set a good example to the rest of the team im in charge ofw, especailly as 7 of them are supposed to be manning phones from 9 on the dot.

General Discussion / How to destroy hard drives
« on: March 25, 2014, 06:27:50 pm »
So, in the process of packing i have come across two old hard drives.

Now obviously i'm paranoid about the feds going through my trash, and while there is nothing 'illegal' on there, i'd rather the photos of me and, oh lets say Kirian, at the lakehouse that balmy summer got out into the open.

Now, i dont have any decent magnets, and i'd rather not risk my microwave.

So best suggestions to safely destroy them?

GPS technology has a built in limit, generally around 1200mph, after which it shuts off.
This is to prevent it being used to guide balistic missiles.

This is the current game keeping me awake at nights

Bought the ios version for £2.99 over Christmas.

Its a turn based squad combat game with a campaign, so you can carry your characters over from mission to mission.

There are masses of campaigns and you can download new ones for free and it looks like you can make your own somewhere as well.

You got the usual mix of troops from fantasy land, and come with standard weaponry, HPs and so on.
Graphics are pretty basic.

Oh, just found out you can download it free on a PC or MAC

Has this BBC drama made it to your countries yet?
I find it incredibly good, although the current series doesn't quite live up to the first two.

I like it much better than Elementary, although I do like that one as well.

General Discussion / Need more maths proof please (technically a puzzle)
« on: December 10, 2013, 10:45:31 am »
Having an argument with a developer at work over the chance of an error happening.

We run ~200 payrolls a month.
Each is assigned the next sequential Batch number when it runs of 001 to 999 (other things use these batch numbers as well so its not a straight pattern, but there are less than 999 jobs run a month so each number will only be used once a month, so for the purpose of this test I am assume a randomly assigned number each month)

If a payroll picks up the same number as before, it errors (well it actually dissapears the previous file, but for the purpose of this case lets just say error)

Now our developer is arguing its not a problem because it only has a 1 in 999 chance of picking the same number after one month, and a 2 in 999 chance the second month etc..

Im trying to point out that because we run 200 payrolls the chances of us encountering on ANY payroll this error is not the 1 in a 1000 months he keeps saying.

I tried to explain it with coins to keep it simple
If i flip Coin A and Coin B
Coin A, comes up Heads
Coin B comes up Tails

If I flip Coin A again
Chance of coming up Heads   1/2

If I flip Coin B again
Chances of coming up Tails  1/2

If I flip them both at the same time
Chances of A coming up Heads OR  B coming up tails IS NOT 1/2
  its 3/4
 (Options are
AA
AB
BA
BB)

But he is not having it.

Obviously the chance of it happening in the first month is 0
And after the 999 months the chances are obviously 100%
What are the chances in the second month?
And the third?
