For there is clearly interest.

People who aren't already in the other game can take precedent here.

Forum Games / Organizing real life mafia
« on: February 23, 2018, 03:36:30 pm »
I'm going to run a real life mafia game night. Anyone have any tips as to how to organize things?  What's a good setup for live play? How to run voting? The players won't have played much or any mafia, but are generally board gamers and interested in games like these. No one has played any online mafia so they probably don't know about things like follow the cop, but some of them have played enough IRL mafia to know that it's generally a good idea so I think a setup deeper than the usual doc + cop would be better. I think they can handle the roles.

Also if anyone has any ideas for less serious late night drunk game setups, those would also be welcome.

I also have werewolf in my bookshelf that I've never played myself, would that be easier than inventing a setup to run myself? Getting enough people for any setup won't be an issue, I was thinking around 10-12 players would be optimal.

Any ideas or tips would be welcome!

Sometimes you just don't play that well.. but dragging a game with no attacks to 30 turns has to be a new personal best.

I don't know what happened. I hope someone has something worse to show, just to make me feel better.

Forum Games / Mafia stream/podcast this sunday!
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:16:37 pm »
The mafia hangout and all this livestreaming of dominion gave me an idea. I wonder if it would be fun to go over old mafia games, the classics, in a live stream setting, analyzing what happened from hindsight, analyzing who played well and just generally walking down the memory lane. Maybe have two or three guys hosting it, and others could participate in chat, or even join in on the skype call.

Thoughts? Would this be interesting for anyone? It could also be a strategy talk session we've never really had outside of the games. In the game it's always difficult because you can't know if the other side is being genuine or not.

This might also help us to lure people who watch dominion streams into trying mafia, if it turned into a regular and popular thing, but that's of course thinking really far ahead. I think I want to try this if there are at least a couple other interested people and we can find a time that works for everyone.
Mcmc has expressed interest in co-hosting this, so we should start thinking about a date. How would people feel about this coming sunday some time? Post here if you could make it, I guess.

Edit: That's not a good way. I'll create a new thread so we won't clog this one up.

So, I think we'll be trying this either this sunday or next sunday (or both!), depending on when you guys could make it.

Game Reports / To engine or not to engine?
« on: April 01, 2014, 06:42:44 pm »
http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20140401/log.5158def5e4b0ee7f08a599e4.1396391738565.txt

After deciding on boring courtyard-bm, I started focusing on facebook and mafia and didn't give this much attention. When I had three provinces to one, I kind of wrote this off as a win and started focusing even less. There were some decisions as to how to use my coin token (that turn 8 province should have been a gold?), and I likely want a third courtyard at some point, even with the potential for island in the future (or were they a mistake altogether? I thought I could clinch 50% VP before he'd get there) and I drew 7 a lot, but still.. is this really an engine board? I didn't think I'd be asking such a question these days, but courtyard-BM is quite good and the engine has like nothing going for it.

SCSN, enlighten me!

... apparently, despite my 10000 posts, I'm a noob and don't know how to use the kingdom displayer.

Mafia Game Threads / Hypothetical strongest mafia/town teams?
« on: November 20, 2013, 08:50:11 am »
So, which combination of players here would in your opinion make the strongest town / mafia teams? Assume a standard 9 player setup (or a 13 player one if you want to include more people). Retired players are fine.

I'll hold off to making my own dream team until tomorrow because I'm too exhausted to think, but thought I'd post this before I forget about the idea

Game Reports / Minion engine or fool's gold?
« on: July 28, 2013, 01:24:12 pm »

For minions, there is golem, market, vineyards and doctor for trashing. Storeroom is awesome with fool's gold though, and venture isn't half bad either after FG runs out. Which is better here?

I won't spoil what happened yet, but I encourage everyone to analyze the board, I think it's a good exercice!

The seventh province was bought on turn 13 and the game went on for 28 turns total. Explorer truly was my shining knight! We also have scout making a contribution.

You should post that one publicly. Definitely one of the weirdest games I have ever seen. Adventurer and Wandering Minstrel as Tunnel activators? Dark, dark times we live in.

So, opponent was someone reasonably good, I think rating 5300 or so. I thought it was a fairly straightforward stables-game with a single junk dealer, but lo and behold, wandering minstrel + adventurer for tunnel enablers and I'm crushed. What just happened?

Forum Games / IRL-like mafia - sign up thread
« on: April 16, 2013, 05:16:59 pm »
So, we could run this through skype or gtalk. Basically it would work just like IRL mafia except that mafia could talk to each other during the night in a private conversation window and any role could be resolved in a private window with the mod.

We'd need 8+ interested people who could agree to a set time (you'd need to commit to 2 hours of consecutive online time or so, people could join midway for new games obviously. Drinking is not prohibited.).

Do we have enough interested people? I can be the mod. Also need to hash out a time, but that might be easier after we check if we even have sufficient interest.

Forum Games / Best team you were ever part of?
« on: March 11, 2013, 02:51:57 am »
I was browsing through my quicktopic-list and thinking about my past games, and wound up reading parts of our evil league of evil quicktopic from rmm3 with Frisk and shraeye. Here is the link: http://quicktopic.com/48/H/YH3MWe7bmkDg

Almost 500 posts, and dare I say a lot of effort put into analysis and planning. We were also two of the most active players with Frisk throughout the game, and shraeye of course with the magnicifent lylo-performance to somehow get us a win. Just a great game and and the most dangerous mafia family I've ever had the pleasure of wreaking havoc with.

What was your greatest scum team or any team in any other game?

Game Reports / To engine or not to engine?

Two games against the man, the myth, the legend, Robz888. We are playing battleship-style.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201302/24/game-20130224-122951-8f9670b7.html
I try to ignore ambassador, but my embassy-bm with horse traders support gets smoked by Robz's city engine. He ambassadors the last border village to me to activate his cities mid turn, nice little trick there.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201302/24/game-20130224-115746-c62a0879.html
So, there is strong silk roads support with nobles, hoard (and contraband). For the engine there is masquerade and king's court, not much else (well, nomad camp for the buys). Again Robz goes for the engine, but this time my silk road strategy is just fast enough to eek out a win. I should have gone for cellars on turn 22, that was dumb of me.

But yeah, interesting boards with diverging strategies. I still don't like the engine on the 2nd, the cards are just too weak and the masquerades become a real problem kind of fast. What do you think?

Game Reports / If I was any good, this would be a dominion academy topic
« on: January 25, 2013, 07:21:53 am »
Eh, just played this very interesting board with Greytips. Cards in supply: Chapel, Cutpurse, Duke, Farming Village, Potion, Remake, Spice Merchant, Steward, Tactician, Vineyard, and Worker's Village.

We go first. What's our play here?

Duchy-duke is a consideration on a board this weak. There is also chapel, tactician and a lot of villages for the engine, maybe even some double tactician thing, but the actions are pretty weak. Vineyards is there as the only potion cost, but again, support for a big action chain is hardly very good. The best province-based big money option would be remake or cutpurse I suppose, but I doubt anyone was going to suggest that. So, how to proceed? Does it matter what our opponent does? I'll hold off from posting the log for now, but it's pretty interesting.

MrEevee has 89 points (77 ▼ and 2 Provinces) and took 22 turns.
catfishalomar has 78 points (60 ▼ and 3 Provinces) and took 21 turns.

.. and no goons this time. My deck came together ok in the end so I guess I played this reasonably well. A very nice and unique board!

Help! / masq-bm vs pirate ships with no +buy

I thought masq-bm would be best on this board with no +buys. Well, apparently it wasnt. Am I underestimating pirate ship? Or did I just paint myself in that corner with some bad moves?

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/25/game-20121125-154444-0445c6b9.html I like cute mint tricks. 5 colonies and a province in 17 turns seems pretty good too.

Help! / First time trying Herbalist + Philosopher's Stone
« on: November 20, 2012, 08:29:42 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/20/game-20121120-172540-0ddafaf5.html
So I was playing some level 0 guy (who played a lot better than I'd expect a level 0 to play). I know I won the game, but 4 provinces, 4 duchies and 2 estates in 21 turns with very little attacking (that actually only benefited me) seems awfully slow and this was supposed to be a very good combo on it's own. What did I do wrong, apart from not drawing my potion with my herbalists in the early game?

Forum Games / Our forum games community
« on: November 08, 2012, 06:36:16 am »
It is nice to know that this community is more than just a group of people who play mafia, but more of a network of friends who play mafia.
I've been meaning to make a thread about this for a while now. It might be because lately I've spent more time than before with my friends in real life, and started to realize this community has definitely become a part of my social circle (of friends?). Mafia is a game that can easily get heated, even personal in some cases. In game we continuously appeal to emotion while lying and deceiving (as mafia), or make mistakes that feel unfair and upsetting to our team mates (as town). These games are also a ridiculous time sink and sometimes rereading to form better reads feels like an actual work. But man oh man have we formed an incredible community here. Lately I've sometimes found myself less interested in the actual playing of mafia. I doubt I'd join a game now if I didn't know anyone. But I can wholeheartedly say I think each and every one of you is pretty cool, and would like to thank you for making playing these silly games such a fun hobby. I don't write long neat speeches so good, and this seems to have become quite the rant, but the point was to show my appreciation for having the chance to be a part of a cool group of people like this. Never thought this could become this important of a hobby when joining my first game! Also a special thanks for guys who moderate games for us to play, there wouldnt be a community without you.
