Non-Mafia Game Threads / Post Your Pangrams
« on: March 01, 2022, 08:27:04 am »
I think we're sort of needlessly flooding the Zendo Questions thread when some people just want to post pangrams.

The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog.
Mr. Jock, TV quiz PhD., bags few lynx.
Two driven jocks help fax my big quiz.
Waltz, nymph, for quick jigs vex Bud.
My girl wove six dozen plaid jackets before she quit?
Sixty zippers were quickly picked from the woven jute bag.
Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow.
A wizard’s job is to vex chumps quickly in fog.
Brown jars prevented the mixture from freezing too quickly.
The jay, pig, fox, zebra and my wolves quack!

"Jazz finds wax," objective glyph makers quip.
Steven Q. bought pickled kazoo wax for Jimmy.
Jack's questionable proxy moved a wiz to fight.
Be my wicked quiver upon a jazzy sex flight?

Objective: Make Phil run waxy fudges quiz.

And of course: Pack my box with six dozen liquor jugs.

Mafia Game Threads / RMM60: Wizard of Oz Mafia
« on: May 19, 2021, 02:17:08 pm »
This will be a role madness game for 13 people with flavor based on the Wizard of Oz movie, and no other Oz source material.  It will be role madness in that everyone will have a role, but the roles themselves will be mostly uncomplicated and there are no weird novel gimmicks. Should just be chill, fun, classic mafia with a fun nostalgic theme.

Guys, I think we need an old-fashioned goofy, unbalanced, anything goes bastard mafia game.

I was googling around for quotes about bastards (because, bastard mafia) and I came across this one from Tyrion Lancaster and so I decided the theme of this bastard game is going to be dwarves. LoTR/the Hobbit dwarves, Snow White's dwarves, Tyrion, Discworld Dwarves, etc. PM me a dwarf of any kind from any media (let's try to stay away from real people with dwarfism) and that will be your character. I may or may not give you thematic mechanical powers.

The setup will be mostly closed, but will probably disclose some things. PINL (Promise I'm Not Lying) rules will apply -- if and only if I write "PINL" before or after messaging, you know you can trust it.

I'm not going to intentionally make the game unbalanced, unfun, impossibly long or impossibly short. But I do reserve the right to do unorthodox or norm-defying things you might not see in a normal game. It's going to be more like the first couple of Bastard Games we played on this forum than the more recent games that are more "I'm not confident I balanced this set-up well so I'm going to call it "Bastard" just in case".

I'll add a rules post and stuff by and by. I'll launch the game with however many people sign up, as long as its three or more.

1. Galzria Dainn, survived
2. faust Barnard's Star, killed night 2.

Welcome to Star Trek: Voyager Mafia

I noticed that there are no games in sign-ups right now. Since I ran DS9 a couple of times I thought I would try to run a Voyager-themed setup.

The setup is a re-flavoring of War in the Palace by PokerFace.

It's an open, nightless setup for 7 ofto 9 players. It has very weird rules, including a plurality exile rule.

The Voyager crew has just been stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway and Maquis Commander Chakotay have decided to work together to get their crews home. OR HAVE THEY? It turns out old habits die hard, and some members of the crew want to see Chakotay in charge. In addition, Seska, a Cardassian spy formerly embedded in the Maquis crew, wants them all dead.

Two players will have the roles of Janeway and Chakotay. They win if the other one dies and Seska dies and they still live. They have no information about other players' identities. They each have a once-per-game daykill which has to be public if the other Captain is alive but can be secret if the other Captain is dead.

One player will have the role of Seska. She wins if Janeway and Chakotay both die -- whether she's alive or not. She has a twice-per-game day kill, but loses a kill every time a Captain dies. This kill can be made secretly and can be used as long as she's alive, including at twilight when she has already been voted up for exile.

The other four or six players will be Voyager crew members loyal to either Janeway or Chakotay. They have no special powers but know the identity of their Captain.

When a Captain dies, all that Captain's loyal crewmembers are thrown in the brig and are out of the game. The game continues until the remaining team either eliminates the assassin or the assassin kills their heir.

It is possible, though unlikely, to end up with the two heirs alive and no one else. In this scenario, the crews have learned to work together as one, just like on the show! It's considered a Happily Ever After victory for everyone except Seska.

Forum Games / Drunk Mafia 8: Quarantine Edition
« on: April 10, 2020, 03:40:12 pm »
Y'all, I think we need to do another drunk mafia during this trying time. Not this weekend because, big holiday, but who's up for a week from today?

WCD? Galzria? raerae and shraeye?

Also, do we want to maybe do it on Jimmmmm's site, which is a little easier for realtime stuff?

UPDATE: The games will begin Friday, April 17 at 9 pm US Eastern Time/ Forum time. That’s 1 AM GMT, just to avoid any confusion. We will hold it in a party thread on Jim’s site (beta.lynchpool.com). If you do not have a key for Jim’s site and want to participate, ping him this week to get set up. Feel free to invite friends. Drinks and owl memes are bring-your-own.

Here's the party: https://www.lynchpool.com/game/jotheonahs-party-1/

Setup:

So since I found out that ADK's "Bastard Mafia" game is going to be a quasi-balanced thing that people are expected to take seriously, I decided to start my own bastard game that we could take a little less seriously.

It's called Bed Idea Mafia because it's based on an idea I came up with in bed the other night.

I can't tell you anything else about the setup, because it's a closed setup that probably only works as a closed setup. I do think it'll actually be fun, and not one of those har, har, everyone's town, this was only fun for the mod games. I think this will be fun for the players AND the mod. But it is definitely a weird, experimental bastard setup. Just not one with totally unfair BS posting restrictions or alignment changes.

Anyway, I think the ideal version has 12 players, but there's a way to run it with 10 or 11 or 13 or 14. Actually the 11-person version might be kind of funny.

Sample Role PM

The town faction in this game is called Town. This is a sample town Role PM:

You are a Vanilla Townie. You have no special powers. Your weapon is your vote. You win when all threats to the town are eliminated or no one can prevent the same.

Flavor

may or may not occur.

This game will start at a time that makes sense to everybody. So, if people are like "I want in, but can we wait until ADK's game is closer to over?" or whatever we'll just sort of go with the flow.

Rules

The standard rules of mafia apply, with the following specifics:

1: Days will be 7 days, nights will be 24 hours, action deadline is end of night.
2. Prods can be requested after 24 hours of inactivity.
3. If no majority is reached by deadline, the day will end without a lynch.
4. The mod color is purple.
5. The game can be silly, but please respect the basic integrity i.e. don't post when the thread is locked, post a QT link, talk about the game outside the game, etc, etc.

UPDATE: Google Form to weigh in on the relative strength of roles: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScknY2r6gx28HdUNGt0VoH9D39He8fhu4M9H6UPk3fXQK8gGQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

I have been looking around the interwebz and I can't really find a checklist or guide for balancing a game, so I thought that might be a fun thing to community-source. If we come up with something we like, we could even make a pinned post in the Mafia Games Thread.

To me, the most useful format would be a checklist: What are the questions you ask when trying to break (or to balance) a setup? This is what I have so far:

  • Does the game contain both a Cop role and a Doctor? If so, can the town win with "Follow the Cop"?
  • What happens if town agrees to a Day 1 mass claim? Does scum have viable fake claims?
  • Do the flips of certain roles create untintentional ICs? Are there roles that have hidden additional value because of this, and does that value unbalance the game?
  • Does a role in the game totally invalidate another role in the game? For instance, if scum has a strongman and no incentive to have anyone else do the kill, it greatly weakens a town doctor.
  • For each role in the game, consider:
    - If this role is lynched day one, is the rest of the game balanced?
    - If this role survives to LyLo, is it overpowered?

This is just a starting point. I'm sure there are a lot more. I also think there's something to be written before you get to the checklist that includes some basic heuristics -- what's an ideal scum-to-town ratio? How do third parties affect this? What are the relative strengths of various common roles? What are the broken combos besides Doctor/Cop?

Ultimately, I think more people brewing and people brewing better could both really liven up this community, and we have a ton of knowledge here. I'd love to condense it into a resource that would make setup design less daunting and more accessible, and maybe make all games here more fun.

General rules

Changes to the usual rule sets are marked in purple.

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun!  Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for any mafia game on this site.  If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play. Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.

1. General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote information (either real or fabricated) from any game-related source other than the thread you are posting in. This means no quotes from PMs and no quotes from QTs in the main thread or in another QT. Paraphrasing is acceptable. If you are unsure whether a post is legal, please ask the moderator before posting.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings and the QTs or other mechanisms specifically designed for this purpose.
3. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 12 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

2. Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. Day phases will last 5 days, Night lasts at least 48 hours. Night action deadline is 36 hours after night start. Some night actions in this game may require multiple back and forth communications with the mods. In those cases, the 36 hour deadline is for the last player submission, so please initiate the interaction before that.
2. Barring certain role-related powers, a simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
3. Once you have reached a majority necessary to lynch, no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
4. Once a player is lynched, the game enters twilight until the mod locks the thread; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
5. If the deadline is hit without a player reaching the majority of votes, the vote is treated as a No Lynch
6. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes in another format may or may not be counted. This is up to the mod's discretion. Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
7. Please submit vote revocations Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
8. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
10. Any time you are dead (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game or in shared Quicktopics. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
11. If the thread is locked, you may not post.  Threads can be locked for various reasons, but no matter what the reason, you may not post.  The mod may forget to lock the thread, but if they say it is locked, it is still locked. Glooble will not be able to modify posts or lock the thread, but he is full co-mod, so please respect his thread locks as law.

3. Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Purple text is reserved for the mods. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please discuss this in your role QT.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players may be issued after 24 hours of no activity.  A prodded player has 24 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 2 times is subject to replacement under without further notice. Players with announced VLA are exempt from this rule the first time it happens.
6. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging. Players who fail to post for 48 hours without an announcement risk being subject to replacement and/or being modkilled without further notice.
7. Please do not discuss ongoing games, it can unintentionally affect the other game. Do not discuss this game in any thread that is not directly related to it.
8. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, which may include modkill(s) if needed.
9. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread.  A request to /out must only be done via a post in the role QT. Please do not use this as a manipulation technique.  (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request). Requests to /out are final once submitted. There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed. Whether your request to /out will lead to replacement or a modkill is up to the mod's discretion.

There's a couple of Dominion tourneys. I'm thinking about throwing my hat into this one: http://east.paxsite.com/schedule/panel/dominion-table-storm

Here's the thing. I haven't played Dominion since the first time Donald X. said he was definitely not making any more expansions, so all the expansions that have come out since then are new to me. Would this be a huge mistake?

I’ve been brewing around some new RM games in my head, and one of them got to the point where I wasn’t sure it was mafia anymore, so I thought I’d throw it out to the group.

1. If Mafia doesn’t have a traditional NK, is it mafia?
2. If town’s wincon isn’t “kill all mafia” is it mafia?

I’m pretty sure that it’s definitely not mafia of you take away the town’s vote. Are there any other changes that would make a game definitely not mafia?

More info on Q1: Night actions are a MiniGames where scum makes meaningful choices that most likely result in a town member dying.

More info on Q2: There’s a group of VIP townies of which at least one has to live for town to win.

Other Games / Dominion is screwing up my parsing of Magic cards
« on: May 29, 2013, 12:30:02 pm »
So lately I sort of left Dominion for Magic (easier to find sufficient people to play with).

The problem is, you parse the cards differently. I was playing Beckon Apparition the other day in a sealed, and I tried to play it first turn when there were no cards in any graveyard. And the judge was like. "Nope, no legal target, can't resolve"

And all I could think was "but it doesn't say "if you do."" Shouldn't I do as much of the card text as I can?

TL;DR I will never escape Dominion.

Game Reports / When is it the right play to Herbalist a Copper?
« on: March 10, 2013, 11:39:36 pm »
Lots of times probably, but when your deck has 8 Ventures and 2 Coppers has got to be up there. Much better to have the Copper in your hand. Too bad I didn't realize the advantage at the time.

A lot of really interesting interactions in this game, which I don't pretend I played as well as I might have:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/10/game-20130310-203331-019d611b.html

Probably should have picked Minion or Venture rather than trying to combine the strategies -- Minions like Minion density more than anything. But when I saw the opportunity to Mint away my Copper, buy some Ventures, and then Mint more Ventures, I couldn't resist. Should I have Minted the last two Coppers away too? And then I foolishly didn't fight for the Nobles because I thought I would grab the Provinces fast enough to make them moot, which obviously didn't happen.

On the other hand, there's nothing more satisfying than playing a Venture and knowing it will find all the treasure in your deck.

Forum Games / Really bad mafia ideas
« on: January 11, 2013, 11:09:43 pm »
I've been wanting to start a companion thread to "Really bad card ideas" for a while.

Post your terrible ideas for roles and setups here.

I'll start:

Paranoid Fruit Vendor

If anyone targets you in the night, they will receive a piece of fruit. The fruit does nothing.

Lightning Mod

All night actions will be redirected to you. And then redirected again to the mod.

Game Reports / some kind of a Golden deck - sort of
« on: January 11, 2013, 10:37:47 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/11/game-20130111-193235-90aa6bc8.html

So I bumbled around a lot in there, including some Highway-Bishop antisynergy, but the gem of what I was trying to do once I thought of it (and succeeded at a few times) was build a deck that would

KC-KC-Mint a Gold-Draw the Golds-Bishop the Golds

for 12 points more or less every turn.

Which I think is kind of a neat trick.

The game is for 15 players, and the setup is semi-open.

You're on Deep Space Nine, just before the start of the Dominion War. At a busy port on the wild frontier of space, it's hard to keep track of all the comings and goings. Despite Odo's best efforts, a string of sabotages on the station have made it clear that someone on board is not what they seem to be.

It's possible that some crewmembers have secretly defected and joined the Maquis, a terrorist group within the Federation. It's also possible that a few crewmembers have been replaced by their mirror universe duplicates - you'd never know the difference if they shaved their goatee. And of course, there's the constant threat of changeling infiltration, though they wouldn't bother with a team. No if there's a changeling aboard he's a solitary serial killer.

Well, this won't do at all. Captain Sisko will take some crewmembers and trusted civilians off their regular duties and assigne them to investigate for the various threats.

Non-flavored information:
- The setup will either have two scum teams or one scum team and one serial killer. You won't know which.
- Either way, there will be three alignment cops: a Maquis cop, a Mirror Universe cop, and a changeling cop. These three will be guaranteed NOT the alignment they investigate for - but not guaranteed town.
- Everyone else will have a small role - either an X-shot version of a power role or a role of marginal or even negative utility.
- These roles, and characters, will be assigned 100% independent of alignment. Knowing someone's role or character will not tell you if they're scum, exception being of course the cops, and the IC-variant if there is one.
- There will be only one version of each character in game. So if there's a Mirror Universe Bashir, there won't also be a Changeling Bashir or a Bashir prime.
- No roles considered to be bastard. I am deciding whether or not I'll post a list of possible roles. I could probably be persuaded to do so.

Quick primer on Deep Space Nine:

It's the third Star Trek series, and the only one to be set on a space station rather than a ship. As such, it has a much richer tapestry of ongoing plotlines than other Star Treks, starting with the discovery of the galaxy's first stable wormhole (which is also home to non-linear time aliens who some characters worship as Gods) to a full on war with aliens from the other side of the wormhole that lasts the last 3 seasons of the show.

The Maquis are dissatisfied members of the Federation (the intergalactic alliance Earth is part of in the 24th century). When Starfleet officers defect to the Maquis on the show, they tend to do it secretly at first, using their rank and position to steal something to help the resistance. So a nice mafia flavor hook.

The Mirror Universe is a ridiculous Star Trek concept - an alternate reality where good people are evil and evil people are good. It started out in the original series, but DS9 did about one mirror universe episode per season.

Changelings are the big bosses of the Dominion, the bad guys in the war. Odo, the station's security chief, is a changeling, but he was raised in the alpha quadrant and he's loyal to the good guys. They can shape shift into animals, other people, inatimate objects, you name it. In the show, the Dominion replaces people with changeling operatives in order to destabilize the alpha quadrant and get them to weaken each other before launching an all out attack.

Knowing more about the show than that will help you make guesses about people's roles if you know their character. But even all that is more than you need to know for a mafia game.
