Goko Dominion Online / Selection of bots on MF/Goko
« on: April 14, 2015, 01:35:22 pm »
In every session I've played in for the past two weeks or more, I only see Serf Bot as an opponent. Does anyone know how the computer selects your opponent when you play against the bots?

It's like Defender Bot and the third one have gone away completely.  I'm not complaining, as Serf is apparently easier to beat, but I am wondering what's up. (Note: I only play against one opponent).

Goko Dominion Online / Goko non-functional?
« on: March 16, 2015, 02:22:50 pm »
I was going to lose a few games, but the login button is non-responsive, and the "play bots" button is also non-responsive, so I can't play as a guest.  Anyone else having issues?

Edit: Sorry about the incorrect reference in the thread title.  Please, no making fun of me.

General Discussion / OK, a little sociology/anthropology or something

Posting here to avoid severely hijacking a thread that I really hope catches on (thanks Ozle!).

Do you enjoy looking through someone's record collection, or book collection?  I always have - it's just such great insight.

So I'm reading the thread on favorite movie quotes, and the thought 'oh I wonder what X's favorite movie quote is' pops into my brain, and is immediately followed by 'wonder what Y's favorite is too' (where X and Y are regular posters here).

So, who do you most hope posts in the favorite movie quotes thread?  I'm really hoping to hear from (in no particular order) theory, Ozle, werothegreat, and Paddyodoors (sorry, not gonna try to recreate that leetspeak for the second account)

Edit: Mafia players - there may be meta in that thread to be mined.

Mafia Game Threads / ZMIX - Veterans Go Flavorless (Mafia wins flawlessly)
« on: December 27, 2012, 07:14:58 pm »
Welcome to Blitz Mafia IX: Veterans Go Flavorless

READ THIS POST IN ITS ENTIRETY TO ENTER!

This game will begin about 09:00 forum time on Monday, December 31, 2012 Wednesday, Jan 2, 2013. D1 will last 27 real-life hours, ending at noon forum time on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013.  Decisions (if needed) about playing over the weekend will be made on Friday, Jan 4, and player input will be solicited at that time.

This game will use the hidden democracy method to determine lynches when votes are tied at the deadline.  This means that if Player X and Y are tied at deadline, I lock the thread, EVERYONE sends me a PM of which player they are voting for (X or Y). The player that receives the most this way is lynched. If neither player has a majority, no lynch occurs. The results of the vote are made public afterwards, and are useful information.

Setup Information (Less Pressure), but different.  Changes in red below.

3 Mafia Goons
3 Vanilla Townies
2 Innocent Children
2 Best Friends  Best Friends are two players who know each other to be Town but are unable to speak to each other privately.  The Best Friends are identified to each other by the moderator in the role PMs, but DO NOT have daychat.

Credit goes to Archetype for suggesting this variation.  There is some sentiment that this setup with 2 Masons is imbalanced in town's favor, and some sentiment that the original "Less Pressure" (with two Innocent Children) has been "solved".

Moderator notes:
1) A spectator QT will be available - just PM the moderator after game start.
2) There will be no flavor. It's not that I'm lazy, but I think I suck at writing flavor, and I'd rather spend that time on providing quick flips, more votecounts, etc.
3) BEFORE SIGNING UP, BE ADVISED THIS IS ONLY MY SECOND GAME AS MODERATOR. However, it has been independently verified that no animals were harmed during the play of ZM8, my freshman effort. (well, an Eevee was slightly damaged, but only very very slightly)

Mechanics:

This game is Nightless.
This game uses a White Flag: town needs to lynch any two Mafia Goons to win.
Mafia have daytalk.
When the first Mafia Goon is lynched, the killed mafia player gets a return kill on a player of their choice. This choice shall be delivered to the mod immediately upon the mafia player's demise.

I would like to encourage anyone that has been considering playing for the first time to give it a try.  This version plays in about 3 real-life days, so you can experience the game without investing weeks of your time.  We welcome new players (and new forum members) to join us.  Be forewarned however, the game can be addicting.

If you are signing up, confirm in your sign-up post that the following statements are true for you:
a) you have read the ENTIRETY of the opening post
b) you understand the setup and agree to the rules and the information in the opening post.
Without such specific language in your sign-up post, you will not be signed up.

Help! / Is this an example of Chapel not being best?
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:52:09 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/07/game-20121207-054512-6a07420e.html

I opened silver/chapel, and was never ahead in score.  I bought a moat early, which defended me from a lot of the attacks, though he took my first gold (T9) with the thief on his T10.  Is that the difference here? Or the bureaucrat getting through twice?

Help! / Another miss - needed remodel?
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:09:13 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/22/game-20121122-080103-d9c8867a.html

I thought for a long time about all the $4 cards that looked better to me for my $5 opening than Stables, and bought Stables anyway.  Would remodel be better here? (I'm starting to think remodel should be bought before almost anything else, after feedback on my previous posts of losing games.)

I know the early Quarry was likely a mistake, but I was thinking Talisman when I bought it, to double up on Farming Villages and Smithys. So that plan fell apart quickly. Plus I had the opposite of my normal money draws, and was quickly to $6 a lot, so I bought golds, instead of engine components, and the quarry's price reduction feature wasn't all that helpful.

We both bemoaned not buying chapel, but I feared it would be too slow, even with the expected longer game with Colonies.  I should have bought Spice Merchant earlier or one more, as I had two turns with wasted money (16$ and 19$, each of which scored colonies only.)

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Who would you want to meet?
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:36:25 pm »
In reading the P sections of RSP lately, I've been astounded at how informed our non-American members are about our political system, candidates, and situations.  It got me thinking about worldview, and how all the cultures of the world do or don't think about the rest of the world.  So here's a version of that dinner party topic. If you could meet any 3 people, alive or dead, who would they be, and why?

Assume that there are no barriers (language, cultural, physical, temporal, etc.) to communication. Anybody, no restrictions, other than they need to be or have been real.  I might start another thread for fictional characters.

Edit:  Added second paragraph.

Was the second witch a mistake?

Game Reports / What was my opponent's strategy?
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:55:29 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/18/game-20121018-084717-d131caa2.html

Kingdom was  Chancellor, Duchess, Embargo, Hunting Party, Inn, Merchant Ship, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Thief, Venture, and Worker's Village

I won this game (opponent resigned) but feel that there is more here to learn.  He opened Hunting Party/Embargo, and embargo'd silvers early, but after I had one. The potion told me his economy was going to be Phil Stone, so I picked up a couple of Thiefs for my Hunting Parties to find.  I was able to get to his Phil Stones eventually.

My question is, what do you suppose his endgame strategy was?  He embargoed Province relatively early, so maybe small VP cards quickly with (relatively unproductive) Phil Stones?

Edited to provide list of kingdom cards.

Game Reports / Finally played a game I'm proud of
« on: September 26, 2012, 02:29:44 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/26/game-20120926-112516-29fc70d5.html

Building a engine for megaturn(s), got my first megabuy and was thinking of loading up on $1 Council Rooms to complete the deck (I was ahead on villages and hamlets, so actions were plentiful).  I looked again, and with 7 buys bought 7 free cards to 3 pile.

Weird to win by a score of 3 to 1.

Help! / What did I do wrong here?
« on: September 24, 2012, 11:37:11 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/24/game-20120924-082805-a8da8915.html

I thought a) I had an awesome plan, and b) it was working well. Then by midgame it was clear that I was gaining ground very slowly, though my GF had very little money, and was trashing it at that.  I suspect my mistake was at turn 11, instead of attacking again with the Pirate Ship, just play them for 4$, because 2x$4 +Province, whereas 2x$5 gets me nothing extra on a board with no +buy.

To add insult to injury, she got the award for winning without buying a green card.

PPE: Wait, she bought an estate on turn 1!!!  Is this a bug?

Edit:  GF has kindly pointed out that the award is for winning without any green cards in her deck at the end.  :)

Help! / Against 5/2 on Lab/Pawn board
« on: September 22, 2012, 12:02:03 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/22/game-20120922-085820-c0234f50.html

I didn't like that my GF opened 5/2 against my 4/3, but I was first to $6, so that helped (I thought).  What could I have done better?  I was aware in midgame that I needed a pawn, but once I got one, it didn't help much.  I was short on money, obviously, but what else?

Council Room Feedback / Why are some ratings changing, and others not?
« on: September 13, 2012, 04:30:02 pm »
Over the approximate time range that councilroom has supposedly been down, my GF's rating has changed several times, in the range of 15 to 13.  Mine has not.  I'm wondering why.

More info: I only play her, and I only win about 20% of our games. Since I'm at zero, I've assumed it's because I don't win enough (duh).  But we played one day in the past two weeks or so where I won about 4 of 8.  Her rating went down (from 14 or 15 to a 12 as I recall), yet my rating didn't go up.  Is 4 of 8 not enough to move me off a rating of 0, at least for a day?

Dominion General Discussion / Knowing you are behind early
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:02:22 pm »
In a game reports thread, RisingJaguar gave the following advice (context is unimportant for my question):
...Try to recognize the start and evaluate if you are behind or ahead, that should be able to tell you a bit of the outcome.
This notion of evaluating whether I'm ahead or behind (and I don't necessarily mean score) is something that I think I'm getting better at - recognizing that I'm behind, at least from the standpoint of believing that my opponent has made better choices in the first 3 or 4 turns. My question is: what sorts of things should I be thinking about if I believe I'm behind (in those terms) early in a game?

Multiple posts over the past few months have stated that it's usually a good idea to stick with a strategy if at all possible.  I may still lose by sticking with an inferior strategy, but I will gain information that is usable long term - viability of my combo, pace of the game with the two strategies in play, etc.  AND I avoid increasing the likelihood of losing due to a large change of direction putting me further behind in terms of the quality of my deck.

I know everything is board dependent, but can I get some broad brushstroke ideas?  Maybe "categories" of things to evaluate?  Again, the question is "what sorts of things should I be thinking about/evaluating if I believe I'm behind (in terms of deck quality) early in a game?

Dominion General Discussion / Getting discouraged with the game
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:14:28 am »
For the last several days, I've found myself in the oddest mindset: I'm simultaneously thinking about my lack of progress as a player (at least as evidenced by my steadily shrinking rating) at the same time I've had my first few games where I felt like everything came together.

Then I read the thread (in Puzzles) that asks about when you might swindle an opponent's silver rather than their gold when presented that choice.  In it is the following post from DG:
You can draw the silver later in the turn and use it as a different card to advance your horns of plenty.
You can play a harvest and know that the silver will be drawn for +1 coin.
You know that your opponent's deck + discard consists of two silvers and a gold, so removing a silver will improve the tributes you can play later in the turn.
You know that your opponent's deck + discard consists of a silver and two gold, so removing a silver will reduce the tributes your other opponent can play in their turn.
There are no gold cards left in the supply and the gold will be the only card in the opponent's deck+discard, so your swindler can trash the gold with no replacement.
You have foolishly played a golem to draw a noble brigand and masquerade in a situation where the stolen treasure will be drawn by the masquerade and become your worst card in hand, passed to your opponent.
How many games will I have to play before this sort of list of answers comes easily?
I can't decide how to phrase the question so that it generates answers that I will find usable, and/or doesn't sound flippant (thereby prompting flippant responses), so how about: At what skill level are you when you can compile a list like this in under say, 30 minutes of thought?  Or, if you prefer, how many games had you played when you realized you had this level of facility with the game?  Those are still not quite what I'm after because they suggest the answer is numerical.

And to be clear, my question is not directed at (just) DG.  I'd appreciate lots of different perspectives.

Theory - If this needs to be moved, I'll not be offended.  I considered posting it in the Help forum.

Other Games / Board gamers in Tampa Florida area?

If this needs to be moved, feel free.

To take care of a family member with health problems, my girlfriend and I will be moving to the Tampa area in the next few weeks, and boardgaming will potentially represent a much needed diversion.  Is anyone aware of any already established gaming groups in the area, or will we need to start one?

Dominion General Discussion / Any obvious strategy here?
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:02:10 pm »
The board was:

Farmland, Fortune Teller, Hamlet, Hoard, Lighthouse, Lookout, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Royal Seal, Vineyard, and Young Witch ( Wishing Well♦ )

This felt like a very weird board, probably because most of the cards I've not seen a lot of, and almost never buy. It was a colony game, and I formulated no strategy at the outset.  With a 5/2 opening, I took YW on principle, because I'm trying to attack more lately.  Beyond that, I was just guessing.  The ending felt weird too - 3 piles in a colony game, and more provinces gone than colonies.

With my first $6, I bought a Hoard rather than gold, and almost every time it came up I had a Hamlet and was able to buy 2 green cards, so I had a good number of golds. Did I just stumble onto the best approach, or is there something else I should have seen?

Dominion General Discussion / Which games count towards ratings?
« on: December 05, 2011, 10:11:14 am »
I know the leaderboard is in a state of flux and heavy discussion, and may have changed again in the past 48 hours, but I hope someone can help me with the following. Assumptions: a) game is played today; b) both players are logged in; c) Doug's rule of a few months ago about games with cards being selected is in effect.  I hope these are phrased in a way to allow yes/no answers.

1) If cards are randomly selected by the computer, but veto mode is used, will the game be used in calculating your rating?
2) If the "bias" feature is used to bias towards a given expansion, will the game be used in calculating your rating?

One further question.  Because I am a newer player, I often seek out players whose status message tells me they are also learning.  A lot of them have the base set at home.  We will therefore manually set the card constraints to "!set=base", but allow ALL 10 kingdom cards (10 of 10) to be selected from the base game ONLY.  I consider this still a random selection of cards, but obviously from a smaller pool of possibilities.  Do games played under these conditions get used in the calculation of your rating?

Edit: Revised question 2 for clarity and facilitation of yes/no response.

Dominion General Discussion / Etiquette question, and learning options
« on: November 04, 2011, 11:50:14 am »
Hi all.  I've been playing for about 6 weeks on Isotropic (unregistered, mostly 2p) and reading this site for about 5.  I'm impressed with the quality of content, civility of discourse, and sense of community.  As a newbie, I'm would appreciate input on the following:

1) On Isotropic, how much time can I reasonably take in evaluating a board without seeming rude, particularly when playing first?  I'm not talking about having to read the cards, as I am now beyond that stage (except for Hinterlands). Sometimes I want to take a full 60 seconds and devise an approach, theorize potential combos, evaluate attack cards, etc.  Is a full minute an inconsiderate amount of time?

2)  I'd like to hear from high rated players on how they decide whether to accept a proposed game. The few times I've proposed games with players rated higher than 30, they've not accepted.  I seem to remember reading that playing against unregistered players means the game won't count towards your rating.  Perhaps that is the problem, but I'd like to play against the 20's and 30's of the world at some point, because I improve by playing with and against people better than me (although that may be everybody at the moment, so the point may be moot).  Which leads me to...

3) How can I make Isotropic's solitaire mode most effective as a learning/practice tool?  I can see using it for practice at building and tuning of engines, and for evaluating combos (as sort of a mini-simulator), but I sense that there is potential there that I've not yet grasped.

4) In what ways can I help support this forum/site?  As you can tell from my logon, I've been bitten pretty hard by this bug, and I'd like to give back in some way.  I'm aware that Isotropic has a finite lifetime, given RGG's plans for an online version, and I hope that this site (and CR.com) will survive and prosper.
