Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Fun or interesting combos with Capitalism
« on: November 05, 2018, 07:05:05 am »
Of the new stuff it seems clear that Capitalism has the most potential for unexpected combos, strange games, and just affecting games the most.
What have you found?

Some cards will be much better, like for example Conspirator and Goons. It will be fun to add an Embargo token to a pile just after you bought a card from that pile yourself.

Poor House will shine!

Dominion General Discussion / Christmas board

Do you have suggestions for a Christmas-themed board? You could at least include cards with winter in them, like Messenger and Ironmonger. What else?

Dominion General Discussion / Shuffling a single card?
« on: May 16, 2016, 09:59:28 am »
There is a thread where it is discussed whether it’s possible to shuffle decks like these.

When the rules tell you to shuffle a deck with just one card it’s obvious what you should do (nothing, or maybe take it up and put it down again after assuring yourself that it is indeed just one card). So the question is not on what you should do, but how to describe what you did. Did you shuffle? Or did you try to shuffle, but failed?

How can it matter? Because of the lose track rule. See the original thread.

There is no official ruling on this yet, and when people expressed different opinions Donald wrote that he is happy to continue gathering data. I have avoided writing a “me too” comment, and others might have done that as well, so here is a chance for us to vote instead, where maybe more people will show how they interpret this.

Goko Dominion Online / v2.0.45
« on: December 03, 2015, 11:54:38 am »
It's been a while, but since I haven't seen anyone else point it out I'll mention that v2.0.45, the version first available on tablets, for some time has been available in desktop versions as well.

It's v2.0.49.29, and the little I've tried it has been a good experience for me. In the release notes it says that the focus has been on fixes for the tablet version, and that most of the changes will have little affect for the desktop. Maybe because I never could use 2.0.44 lots of stuff has changed in my view, and I think it looks and behaves nicer. For one thing the chat window has a better font.

This is a follow-up to my previous poll for 2.0.43. The "winner" then had to do with not getting the right level of opponents in the matchmaking, something there has been changes to in 2.0.44. The runner-up then had to do with the point-counter, which isn't changed. Meanwhile several people have reported not being able to play at all with 2.0.44, and a serious bug with deleted files has been reported. I've added a few options, and hope that everyone's favourite beef is in here in some way.

If you don't use 2.0.44.2 (don't play at all, use a previous version or use the web version), pick the main reason you don't!
If you do use 2.0.44.2 try to pick the thing that would benefit your playing the most.

Goko Dominion Online / Making Fun's forum
« on: November 11, 2015, 11:35:03 am »
Is there a way to get a password reminder from the Making Fun forums? I can't get past "You need to pass the human verification challenge before proceeding." Is there anything else I can do to convince them that I'm a human except check the "I'm not a robot" box? There is a captcha thing beside it, but it doesn't do anything as far as I can see.

11
This is about the downloaded clients, not about the web version.

If you don't use Playdominion, please pick the main reason that you don't. If you would have continued to used the previous version if it was available please pick the reason why. If you use Playdominion, please pick what you think would benefit your playing there the most.

I have intentionally not included "cards are too expensive" as an option, since if you think so it's so hard to compare to the others. Presupposed in the question is that you want to play Dominion online with no owned cards or with the cards you do own, and that there is something in the implementation that makes you not play or not play as much (or as happy) as you'd do otherwise.

November 4 2015: Poll locked, because 2.0.43 is no longer the latest version.

Goko Dominion Online / Challenging
« on: October 17, 2015, 03:47:56 am »
What cards are used when you challenge other players? The cards you own? Or cards the involved players with the most cards have? (I don't think it is what I proposed a long time ago, the union of your cards.)

Primarily I want to know if it matters who challenges whom.

There's a new version again!

Release notes are here and include fixes for Band of Misfits and Possession and some campaigns.

The bug where you can't switch to other applications when fullscreen on OS X is not fixed.

New version out. Relase notes.

Most changes are made regarding the Campaigns, with special rules designed by Donald X. for some parts. (They are not described in text yet though, so will be surprising.)

Rules Questions / Travellers from Black Market
« on: April 19, 2015, 10:40:12 am »
Finding a Page or a Peasant at the Black Market is interesting.

Exchanging a card is described with:
Quote
When a player discards a Traveller from play, he may exchange it for the card indicated; he returns the card being exchanged to its pile, takes the card he is exchanging it for, and puts that card into his discard pile.

What does returning the card being exchanged "to its pile" mean?

My first thought was that this is not possible, so you couldn't do that, but there is no "if you do" to stop you from taking the next card, so when discarding a Page you would get a Treasure Hunter even though you still had that Page, etc.

But the best literal interpretation may be that "its pile" is the Black Market deck, so you put the Page or Peasant on the top of that! Comments?

How many different cards do you usually play when preparing for a Horn of Plenty megaturn going for Provinces?

When I've identified the best 8 cards I often focus just on them for awhile, but then later in the game I am often tempted to get some totally other card to increase the variety. Is it usually better to just focus on the best 8?

(One reason to diversify further is to avoid emptying piles beforehand. But besides that, I mean. And yeah, of course it depends on the board, and I should probably link to some game where I wondered about that, but I don't really have that now.)

17
    Here are my guesses:

    • We will see new Duration cards. This is a design space that hasn't been explored that much, since all existing Duration cards leave play the turn after you play them, whereas the Duration mechanic makes it possible for them to be in play longer than that. I expect Durations that you can feed somehow to keep in play turn after turn (If there ever are to be more Durations, a big set is the right place for it, where there can be enough of them to justify including all about Durations in the rules again.)
    • We will see a new card costing $1
    • We will see anew card with an oversized pile (like Rats). Maybe a small-value victory card.
    • There will be a few cards that are similar to some existing fan cards.

That's my groundless speculation. How about yours?

Rules Questions / Prince and Duration cards
« on: June 12, 2014, 05:40:53 pm »
It's obvious that Prince isn't effective with Duration cards, since Prince has a "when you discard it from play". But still, exactly what happens if you do it anyway?

Quote
You may set this aside. If you do, set aside an Action card from your hand costing up to $4.

OK, suppose I do that with a Caravan and let's see what happens. This is turn P (as in Prince).

Quote
At the start of each of your turns, play that Action, setting it aside again when you discard it from play.

So turn P+1 I play Caravan first. At the end the turn I don't discard Caravan because of the duration effect, so it's not set aside.

Turn P+2 I have the duration effect from Caravan, and at the end of the turn it is discarded. If the above quote was all there was I would say that now when Caravan finally is discarded it should be set aside again, and then the Prince would set it in play again at turn P+3. But there is more:

Quote
(Stop playing it if you fail to set it aside on a turn you play it.)

That's what happened at the end of turn P+1, so it shouldn't be played on turn P+3 after all. OK, but still, I see nothing that says it shouldn't be set aside then, so my literal reading is:

Turn P: I play Prince with Caravan
Turn P+1: The Caravan is played and remains in play as Duration card
Turn P+2: I get the duration effect and then the Caravan is set aside again.
Turn P+3 and on: That Caravan is inactive for the rest of the game though, just set aside like on an Island.

Agreed?

Variants and Fan Cards / Gold that trashes

Discussing a card trashing cards in play I thought that a simple case of that would be

Trash a card in play. If you do: $3

Good for getting rid of Copper, but after that it can be a bit problematic. Good with Fortress of course.

Rules Questions / Discarding down to X cards
« on: March 17, 2014, 04:14:32 pm »
I just realized I still have a basic rule question, that has been with me since the basic set.

When you discard down to a specific number of cards (like when attacked by Militia), do you discard cards one at a time or not?

The rules say that when "discarding several cards at once, the player need not show all cards he is discarding to his opponents". An example is Cellar.

But the text on Militia says each other player "discards down to 3 cards in his hand", and the rules explain this as "The attacked players discard cards until they have only 3 cards in hand" (my bolding). This doesn't sound to me like an instance where you are instructed to discard several cards at once, but as it's one at a time until the limit is met.

(I've checked later cards with "discard down to", and they don't say more about this.)

Goko Dominion Online / #vpany
« on: October 24, 2013, 07:57:53 am »
Suggestion: If you're OK playing with or without the point tracker, then when you set up a table at Goko, please add #vpany to the table name!

This is analogous to #vpon and #vpoff that Goko Dominion Salvager knows about. It wouldn't know about this, but people see those tags as well, and avoid some tables. Since you have a table everyone can be happy with, show it, and you'll get opponents faster!

How many do you get? Fun for the whole family!

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Abbreviations
« on: June 13, 2013, 02:34:04 pm »
Good news, everyone! The Guilds cards don't create any new collisions for name abbreviations. Merchant Guild is the only MG and Candlestick Maker is the only CM. All the one-word names are unique with their first four letters.
