GokoDom / Who do you think will win Gokodom III?
« on: May 15, 2014, 03:19:16 pm »
Only a few hours to go!  Finals Hype!!

As the finals will be played on the designed kingdoms this match will probably
come down to skill rather than luck, far more than in the previous rounds.
I'm confident we'll see them chosing different strategies from time to time.

So who is your favourite?
Who will be able to play out his strength
and spot his opponents  weaknesses to victory?

Vote now and ensure your chance to say "I knew it!"

A while ago i realized in my play that this happens sometimes. Later when i watched other players stream i saw this happening, too.

I have 3 big examples of this:

1. The Power of Big Money

Almoast everyone went through the state of mind "Big Money is just OP" at the beginning of their dominion career.
As the skill and understanding of dominion mechanics evolves the power of engines if played right gets clear.
But i feel this often leads to a state where Big Money now gets underestimated. And a lot of good players will always go for the engine
when there seems to be one that can compete the best Big Money on that board. But it's not that rare that the best BM is just still slightly
stronger than that engine.

2. Thinning versus economy

The engine you want to build doesn't really like treasures and you want to get to the point where you cycle through your whole deck
as fast as possible. Trashing is often the best way to reach that goal. Newer players usually overvalue the addition of good cards to your deck in comparison
to trashing bad cards. Again i feel there is an observable effect of more experienced players  starting to overvalue the trashing. Sometimes there is a tendency to
overtrash with chapel, sometimes it's about the question of upgrading/remaking copper over estate. I have realized situations where i chose to upgrade copper over
estate and the was actually considering buying a silver with the $3 left over on the same turn because there was no engne component at that cost. That is totally inconsistent because the deck has the same size now and an estate instead of a copper which is considerably worse. I see other people  doing that aswell.
It's the same as with JoaT in engines that don't really want much silver. The early economy boost is just extremely important to get to those key engine components as fast as possible, much more important than this once additional "bad card" in your deck.

3. Triggering unwanted reshuffles / dead draw

When people start to build engines with sifting this is one of the most important lessons to learn. Triggering an unwanted reshuffle can
throw you back by so much! Maybe not as crucial but still pretty bad is terminal draw without more actions left in very action heavy deck at the wrong time.
You usually don't hurt your next turn as much but often you do hurt it and you also don't accomplish a lot for your current turn.
When people start getting better at dominion those mistakes will be made less and less. But again often it can get you at the point where you
don't really evaluate situations on their own and don't want to trigger an unwanted reshuffle even though you should have.
The same is true for dead draw. You built a Village-Smithy-Deck with treasure payload and get really unlucky colliding 3 Smithys at the top of the shuffle
without any of the villages? Don't be scared to draw Villages dead! Yes you will not make your current turn significantly better, but your next turns will be far worse than average anyway as almoast all of those smithies are already skipped and with that it is better to get to a new shuffle as fast as possible.
A connected example is in terminal draw Big Money where you already have a $10 hand with smithy at the top of the shuffle. You know your next turns will be worse than average so play this smithy even though you might now have a $13 hand with a lot of wasted money.

GokoDom / Collecting signatures
« on: May 10, 2014, 07:39:45 pm »
Hey,

Gokodom III finals are ahead of us now.
Sadly none of the streamers made it.
I know some of the others (like me) were playing with the thought of maybe streaming
their matches for the public good if they would get far enough.
It would be really cool to have the finals streamed or recorded with or without commentary.

So here i am starting this petition-like thread to collect signatures.
Maybe we can persuade JOG or Andrew to stream the finals

Simulation / Need help with a simulation
« on: May 03, 2014, 08:48:50 am »
I want to simulate Hermit-Feodum BM

Strategy:

Get 2 Hermits to trash your estates and Feoda and gain Silvers (3rd one when your deck is more than 20 cards)
and gain Hermit with Hermit whenever you only have a < $3 hand (and turn the played hermit into a madman)

Buy Feodum when you have more than 9 silver or when you have a Hermit coming up before the next reshuffle (with at least 80% chance)
( hermits left in draw pile >0 && cards left in drawpile [mod 5] / cards left in draw pile <= 0,2)

-Trash Feodum over Estate, but only trash Feodum if you trashed 2 or less Feoda so far.

-Buy Province over Feodum when you have less than 18 Silver.

-Buy silver on all other turns .

My knowledge in coding for the simulator isn't enough to do that.
Can you help me?

Dominion General Discussion / Treasure Map, Masterpiece
« on: March 26, 2014, 11:39:12 pm »
Here i am going to comment on the synergy between those two cards in a BM Deck.
If you go for Treasure Map in a game you will have that one hand with lots of Gold
and no +buy most of the time. Masterpiece likes that.

I played a Big money game recently that used those two cards.
As you get a >=  $12 hand after connecting two Treasure Maps
you can easily flood your deck with masses of silver on that turn.
Now you have a Deck with an average Money density around $8 per 5 cards.
Simulations suggest that you can connect two Treasure Maps on around
turn 7 on average if you buy Treasure Maps on every at least $4 hand
until 2 of them collide. Assuming you bought around 3 Maps and 3 Silvers
on turn 1-6, collide 2 Maps on turn 7 and trash the 3rd map later and get $13
on turn 8 which seems to be a reasonable suggestion, your Deck will be
13 Silver 4 gold 7 Copper and 3 Estate 1 Masterpiece after turn 8.
Thats  about 1,64 coins per Card.
Now you can buy a Province each turn for the next 6 turns
(assuming perfect shuffle luck)
More likely you can get 4 Provinces and 2 Duchies until turn 14.
That is about the same as a premium BM strategy like Jack-BM can.
And your deck is a lot larger than a Jack BM deck would be,
and therefore is pretty resistent to greening and still has its starting
estates on top of that.

Of course there are also other cards on the board and most likely one
or two of them even support this strategy and make it even stronger.

Game Reports / Talking about near perfect shuffle luck
« on: July 27, 2013, 10:03:21 am »
In this game i managed to buy 8 Provinces in 8 consecutive turns (Big-Money-Deck with only 1 Adventurer and 1 Count)

The only thing that didnt work out was to connect my feodum with a Count in the first 10 Turns when i was heavily trashing,
so i had 8 Provinces and one 0-Point Feodum at the End :)

But still dont think i had ever had such good shuffle luck

Dominion General Discussion / Interesting Multiplayer Kingdom
« on: July 20, 2013, 07:30:00 pm »
Hey,
i tried to design a Kingdom for 3-or 4-player games with more than two viable strategies that can all compete against one another.

Kingdom:

Beggar, Fools Gold, Develop, Menagery, Warehouse, Baron, Conspirator, Minion, Horn of Plenty, Duke

strategies that come to my mind:

1.Minion-Conspirator-Warehouse-Engine

2.Baron-Fools Gold-Big Money with Warehouse Support

3.Beggar-Duchy-Duke-Slog

4.HoP-Engine (only for experts)

Of course this board is also can also be used for 2 player games but then i think the strategies might be less equal and that maybe one strategy has really an edge over one certain other strategy which makes the choices less interesting.

What do you think of this Kingdom?
Maybe you can help me do some playtesting.

(btw i changing one or two cards in the setup here from time to time to make it more balanced)(like i just swapped stewart with develop to slow down the HoP Engine a bit as that strategy was a bit too dominant here)

Introductions / Hello, i'm new here!
« on: June 11, 2013, 11:14:19 am »
Hello everyone,

I'm MarkowKette and my name is Chris.
I got to know Dominion some month ago and started enjoying it quite a bit.
Right now i own most of the expansions in RL but get to play with them quite rarely as most of my friends dont really share
my interests in card and board games.

So i started to play a bit on Goko, even though i haven't bought any of the expansions there as i already own them in real
and there are usually enough players hosting games with all cards anyway.
I really like putting in some thoughts onto the different strategies and combos that come along and by researching on the cards
i dont own i found this forum and saw the community behind it.

Now i introduce myself here hoping to find some nice players to play with regularly and to have interesting discussions about Dominion with.

About me:
I'm studying Mathematics at the Ulm University in Germany and my hobbies are playing board/card-games, badminton and beachvolleyball and doing research in graphtheory (if anyone knows what i'm talking of  ;) )

So thats about me, and now i'm looking foreward to getting deeper into Dominion here  ;D
