Innovation Game Reports / Why Beer and Engineers Don't Mix

http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201308/15/game-20130815-061453-3836c15d.html

This was a perfectly normal figures w/echoes game for the first 11 turns or so; the echoes cards didn't even really play much of a role. Then I get Fermenting from Jorsh, which goes rather nicely with Sunshu Ao's karma and inspire effect. Okay, but still not unheard of.

I draw up to Reformation, and on turn 15 proceed to "tuck" Fermenting with it 5 times drawing a truly ridiculous number of cards. Still not unheard of.

Jorsh gets Clock, and steals all my 3s and 4s, forcing me to cover Sunshu with Vaccination to keep him from stealing all the achievements. He does get a couple, though, which hands me a few figures - including John von Neumann. For the unfamiliar, Neumann's karma gives you two bulbs for each card in hand.

And Vaccination had just melded me Radio Telescope.

One click later, there go all of the remaining cards; game over on score. (The only regret is that I wasn't able to win by melding AI; far too many bulbs for that.)

I found it all pretty amusing, so figured I'd share it with you all.

For one reason or another, your travels have brought you here, to the Antler & Thistle tavern near the town gate of Brindol. It's convenient for travelers, the food is decent, and the beer is good. As you step into the common room, you notice a few scattered patrons enjoying a drink or a meal, as well as three in the back playing a game of cards. The bartender is looking around the room as he polishes up some mugs. It appears to be a rather slow night; the room could comfortably seat many more patrons. There are two small storerooms in the back, with another door directly between them. A large stone fireplace burns low in the center of the room. The only noteworthy decoration seems to be a large, but old and tattered, banner with a red hand, which hangs behind the bar.

(OOC: I haven't presumed any of you have entered yet; I'll let each of you describe doing so, and what you do when you come in. Feel free to roleplay your characters meeting one another, or beginning to interact with any of the NPCs. They won't take much notice of the humans or the half-elf, but Hroksull's height and Merik's "unique complexion" will stand out.)

Introduction
Inspired by Theorel's Deadlands campaign (which looks to be off to a good start), I'm willing to run a 4e D&D campaign on these boards. The format and much of the content of this post is shamelessly cribbed from his thread.

I've both run and participated in such campaigns in the past (including one online campaign I ran during college which lasted two years, then died when people graduated). The fourth edition of Dungeons and Dragons is my personal preference, since it fixed a lot of the balance issues in previous versions and combat is much more tactical (it feels like a boardgame at times). Currently I plan to use my slightly modified version of the Scales of War adventure path, in order to help keep things somewhat focused and to help with giving an overall plot.

As with anything of this sort, there are spoilers out there for the story.  Of course, there will be flavor elements based on your characters, and how you approach things that can make this look different from "typical".  I'm certainly not afraid to handle things differently, so you may not know exactly what's going to happen, even if you're familiar with the campaign.  Ideally you'll just know nothing of it, and get to be surprised as things happen.  If you do know the story ahead of time, you are not prohibited from playing, but please try to maintain In-Character lack of knowledge, and don't spoil it for others; also, please let me know if that's the case.

This is the sign-up/character creation/interest check thread.  I'll move to a different thread once we start playing (and possibly periodically depending on how big the threads get).  The second post here is sort of a GM-Player contract, just something to make sure we're all on the same page as far as playing the game goes.  The third post here is setting information, important stuff about the fantasy world we'll be playing in.  The fourth post is stuff relevant to this specific game.  This post is an introduction, and some expectations regarding PbF RPGs.  If you've never played a PbF RPG you should read this post...if you've played RPGs online before you can skip the rest of this post.

Once someone creates a character, I'll add an in-character component to this thread.

Expectations for a PbF RPG
The goal here is to make expectations clear...this is a long-term commitment, and RPGs can tend to be pretty involved.  That said, the important part of the commitment is not to keep playing no matter what, but just to keep the GM and fellow players informed. I think with a tight community (such as we have here) there's a very good chance for this to succeed.

RPGs work pretty differently from the other games played here.  There's a lot more in-game conversation going on than a typical board-game (making it more similar to a mafia game).  In particular, the situation where conversation is dominated by a couple active players can arise just as in mafia games.  So players with lower post-counts can start to feel overwhelmed with trying to keep up.  Now, just as in a mafia game...it's OKAY if you aren't posting a lot, you shouldn't feel pressured to do so, but there is a level of commitment needed, and you might feel overwhelmed by the reading. I'll commit to checking in, at minimum, every evening (or let you know if for some reason I'm unable to do so), and would like anyone who signs up to be willing to do the same.

RPGs also take a LONG time.  A gaming session which would be maybe 3-4 hours in person, easily stretches to 1-2 months (maybe more) in PbF.  So, a 20-session campaign which would probably take about half a year for a group meeting FtF, will run a few years on PbF.  That's a long time to commit to something.

The combination of both of these things, means that players have a tendency to drop out and need replaced (so do GMs, though hopefully that won't be an issue :) ).  If you do need to drop out that's fine, but please let me know.  If you're just feeling overwhelmed, but want to keep playing, or if you need to take a couple months off or anything, let me know that too.  Anyways, if you can keep me informed, I'll appreciate it, it will help keep things moving for everyone, and just make a more positive experience overall.

On the other side, it'd be great to have some subs available.  If you're interested in playing, but the game is full, I hope you'll be a substitute for the (essentially inevitable) missing players.

So, if I didn't scare you off, let's move on to the fun parts.

Innovation Game Reports / Tuck All the Cards
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:44:21 pm »
I'm sharing this game not because it's a great strategic example or anything, but because it really amused me. I managed to tech up to Industrialization while my opponent had 3s/4s, and I had a score of 1 to his 0. From there on out, I pretty much was able to just keep hitting Industrialization and tuck absolutely every card in the 7, 8, 9, and 10 stacks. He tried sharing force-melds and sharing a scoring card, once (I ended up winning 7 to 5), but nothing stopped the factory snowball.

Innovation Game Reports / Don't watch TV, Stay in the Stone Age
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:35:30 am »
Hey everyone, long-time reader/lurker, first-time poster.

Just played a game on Isotropic that was really amusing to me, for multiple reasons (not least because my opponent and I had some good chat). He got a Math train started, but wasn't able to go all the way; meanwhile, I racked up a sizeable score pile thanks to Mapmaking. Near the end, he was able to blast it nearly into non-existence with Mass Media, but I already had five achievements. Final move? Using Translation to meld all the remaining age 1 cards from my score pile - putting me back into the Stone Age, but getting me the final achievement.
