Hi, I'm Axe Knight.  Back when this forum first opened, I posted quite a bit,  even wrote a logic puzzle that's buried somewhere in the Puzzles and Challenges thread, but then I quickly had to leave for awhile because far, far less fun things happened in my life.

I live in Maryland, which is by Washington, DC for those who don't know.  I also like math, and I'm a classical pianist (mainly Chopin and Liszt).  I have a walk-in-closet full of board games, somewhere around 120 or so, lost track awhile ago.  In addition to Dominion, I like Caylus, Carcassonne, Princes of Florence, Puerto Rico, and St. Petersburg, to name a few.

Good to be back!

Council Room Feedback / Records
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:05:52 am »
I was wondering, if it would be possible to calculate records for individual players, and perhaps, isotropic as a whole.  For example, most buying power in a turn, most games played, most turns a game lasted, most cards played in a turn, most victory points in a game, and perhaps, your personal record by level of opponent.  This information is not always useful, but it would certainly be fun to see.  I would offer to help code this, but it's been quite awhile since the little computer programming I had as a Mathematical Statistics major.  :)

Dominion General Discussion / Treasure Map in mid game?
« on: July 21, 2011, 03:25:05 pm »
Today, I had a game with Treasure Maps and other cards that made a fairly good draw engine.  I considered going for the Treasure Maps mid game, but was hesitant because I was afraid they would either clog up my deck when I couldn't find a match, or the four Golds I'd be rewarded with wouldn't help me that much at that point, since I could gain a Gold or more per turn anyhow.

Does anyone have any examples of games where they bought Treasure Maps mid game or late, and it worked out well?

Other Games / Ticket to Ride Question
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:45:13 pm »
When attempting to build a tunnel, if one is successful in the draw (i.e. having enough cards to cover the extras, or no extras revealed), do they still HAVE to build the tunnel?  The rules were not clear about this, but I'm leaning towards no since it just says that only then can they build the tunnel.  Last night, we had a player want to build the tunnel, then after he realized that he'd need to spend two extra cards, he opted not to...

Game Reports / Post one you'd like to have back
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:46:03 am »
There are the games we lose because we didn't get the draws we needed, or just got outplayed.  Then there are the games we lose because, well, we deserved to.

Here's one of mine from lately:

My opponent and I had practically identical decks going into the 13th round.  We had cleared out the Cities, and I had just taken the last few Minions.  All eight Estates were left.  I should have considered the possibility, given that I used my Universities to run out the Minion (read: second) pile the previous turn, that the Cities would give enough buys to simply clean out the Estates, especially since we would probably be drawing our decks every turn.  So I clear out the Minions to give him the extra buys, and then buy a Gold(!?) of all things.  Even Universitying in some Embargoes to place on the Estates would have been better, since I would've drawn them anyway, and had plenty of actions.

Next turn, surely, enough, he takes eight Estates to win by...eight.

I'd be interested to see other examples of epic black hole fails.

Variants and Fan Cards / New Types of Cards
« on: July 07, 2011, 01:34:34 pm »
Not sure if this has already been mentioned in a thread, but I recently was taking a look at the different types of cards in Dominion and what colors they are:

Cards that perform actions that sometimes affect what other people do (Greyish)
Cards that react to what other people (or sometimes, you) do (Blue)
Cards that add to your VP total (Green)
Cards that decrease your VP total (Purple)
Cards that directly affect more than one turn (Orange)
Cards that influence your buy phase (Gold)

What other types of cards could be introduced in future expansions, and what would be the best color for them?  I honestly can not think of something that could not be classified as a combination or special version of the above, though red seems to be the obvious choice for the next color.

Puzzles and Challenges / My Dominion Logic Puzzle
« on: June 29, 2011, 12:31:18 am »
I sincerely apologize ahead of time if there are any mistakes in this.  There is at least one solution.  I don't think it's difficult, but then again, I wrote it.   :P

Darlene, George, Harry, and Ingrid (in that turn order) are playing Dominion.  Darlene is to George's left, Ingrid is to Harry's right, etc. There were only five kingdom cards in play.  The supply is as follows:

Baron (5 left)
Smithy (8 left)
Shanty Town (0 left)
Chapel (2 left)
Smugglers (0 left)

Copper (1 left)
Silver (40 left)
Gold (30 left)

Curses (0 left)
Estates (2 left)
Duchies (5 left)
Provinces (4 left)

Who played which actions during their previous turn, in which order, and who gained which card?

Find out using the following clues:

NOTE:  Even though this is a logic puzzle, the players did not behave brilliantly, and this situation is not actually possible, since three piles are depleted.

1)Each participant played at least one Action on their turn (some playing more), and each player started with five cards.
2)Ingrid did not play any Action which caused her to draw exactly two cards.
3)Only the player who played the most Actions played the Smugglers.
4)No player reshuffled during their turn.
5)George did not trash any cards from his hand, nor did he play an Action that cost one less than the one Darlene played.
6)No player had any Victory cards in their hand at the start of their turn.
7)Darlene played only one Action, and she was the only one who had that action in her deck.
8)No player bought a Silver during the round.
9)Harry and one other player to his left gained an Estate. Each gained exactly one, and only one of these was bought.
10)Ingrid had no cards in her hand at the end of her Action phase.
11)Darlene did not play any cards that gave an extra Action.
12)At the start of the turn, George and Harry had no treasure cards in their hand.  At the end of their Action phases, Darlene had three, and George still had none.
13)The top two cards of Harry's deck were an action and a curse, and the only others were two treasure cards thereafter.
14)Everyone gained at least one card in the round.
15)No one started their turn with any actions of the same name.
16)Harry only gained a Province the turn before this one, and was the only player to gain a card.

Variants and Fan Cards / Post an interesting set of 10
« on: June 18, 2011, 06:23:21 pm »
I'm always looking to try out new sets of 10 that aren't completely random.  This is one my group and I did recently, just for fun, of course:

Coppersmith
King's Court
Goons
Council Room
Counting House
Chancellor
Worker's Village
Bridge
Bank
Cellar

I should note that even with this array of cards, it was still sometimes better not to rely on copper.  What are some of your favorite/interesting/fun sets?

Introductions / Who am I? Why am I here?
« on: June 15, 2011, 05:05:22 pm »
Hello, all.  I didn't see an introduction thread, so I thought I'd start one.  I just thought it'd be nice to have a space to say as much or as little (but not too much ;)) about ourselves as we'd like.  Maybe who we are, how long we've been playing Dominion, what we do, and what other stuff we like, etc.

I'll start.  Axe Knight is both my forum name and my isotropic name, derived from the old Enix game, Dragon Warrior.  I've been playing Dominion for about a year now.   I also like too many other things to list here, but mainly music (both playing my piano and listening), and photography.
