Game Reports / Fun with Scheme and Trader against double Mountebank
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:47:09 am »
Bank, Bishop, Border Village, Colony, Festival, Harvest, Mountebank, Platinum, Scheme, Talisman, Trader, and Venture

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/04/game-20120304-223027-ad175e17.html

This is mostly just a really fun game that I wanted to share, but I'd love to know how other people would evaluate it. The actual match was pretty simple and almost formulaic, but there are lots of interesting theoretical interactions here.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but here seems as good a place as any. Like most of you, I play Dominion primarily on Isotropic, but (and I may actually be in the minority here) I greatly prefer playing live. I have a small group that I play with occasionally, but they are mostly casual players who are up for it infrequently.

Because of this, I've been thinking about setting up some kind of Dominion league in my area. I live near Seattle and recently discovered an excellent card store/cafe that rents out large private rooms in advance for card game tournaments, at a fee that is waived if the group tab hits a certain reasonable number. They also freely loan out copies of various games to patrons, including Dominion and all its expansions. I'm sure other major cities have similar hot spots that would be perfect places for a tournament or live league, if there was any interest.

So my question is: would there be? Obviously this community is spread all over the place, and trying to organize a tournament in any one city could just not work, but it's also very large and still growing. I'm just surprised the idea hasn't really been discussed before, and I'm curious if there's any potential there.

So let's use this thread as a way to gauge interest, wherever you are - list your location and your level of interest in this, and I'll edit this post with a breakdown by city, and we can see if it's something worth pursuing. At worst it can be a nice little index in case there's ever a need for one in the future.

EDIT (2/15): Okay, so everyone seems pretty spread out, but I am still happy to use this thread as a running directory of interested players. I'll continue to update the list every time the thread grows by a couple pages or so. So if you're interested, please still reply - we have plenty of time. If I got any locations wrong for some reason, or missed anyone, please let me know.

Game Reports / The power of Trader
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:46:34 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201201/19/game-20120119-041758-f7c633a9.html

Apprentice, Bank, Harvest, Potion, Smithy, Spy, Talisman, Trade Route, Trader, Trading Post, and Transmute

So I've thought for awhile now that Trader is an extremely underrated card, and I finally have a sample game. The idea here is pretty simple: open Trader/Silver, pick up a Smithy or two along the way, grab the first Province and then trash it to flood my deck with Silver. I get extremely lucky here and do this on turn 7, then proceed to buy provinces on turns 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14.

By the end of the game half of my deck is Silver, and it wasn't about to slow down - I would've drawn enough to buy another Province on turn 15.

Game Reports / Question on approaching a complex board
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:37:49 pm »
So I just played this game: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/13/game-20111113-151939-6de81b4f.html which was a lot of fun, and though I feel I played it pretty decently I was basically just winging it as I went. I'd be really curious to know how you guys would analyze something like this at the beginning of the match. Here's the setup for reference:

Bazaar, Bishop, Border Village, Farming Village, Farmland, Forge, Lighthouse, Salvager, Stash, and Upgrade

It's basically a trash-for-benefit lovers' dream board. So, where do you start? Assuming a 4/3 open, what's your general strategy here? I'm assuming the correct play with your first $6 is to take BV/Upgrade (which could be totally wrong), but what about your next couple $6s? Is using Upgrade to go BV/Forge/Province too many steps, or is it simpler to just Salvage away to victory? Are the Bishop points going to usually be worth it? How much treasure do you want here? I played this one pretty erratically, is there a more precise way to play it?

Game Reports / Remake vs Horse Traders/Apprentice: did I play this right?
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:56:26 pm »
This is an interesting game I played a couple days ago that I've been thinking about a lot: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110903-223705-cb05ebf4.html

We both have some pretty lucky turns in this game and end it quickly (13 turns) in a tie, and I'm left wondering just what the best strategy is here. Would I have lost this game without my amazing turn 4/5 remake draws? Did we both make the correct move in ignoring Familiar here (seems to me like it would be much too slow)? How would you guys have played this?

Dominion General Discussion / Governer?
« on: August 27, 2011, 03:48:19 am »
So I just looked at my popular buys page on council room and noticed a card named governer, with which six total games have been played. Requesting the card on isotropic reveals nothing. Anyone know what this mystery card is?
