Game Reports / Duke game - was Duchy the right purchase?
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:29:16 pm »
Hi, all.  I just won a game on isotropic against a level 40 player, which I'll admit is pretty exciting. (I'm a lowly level-20!)  I'm happy with the win, but I think we both made a few tactical mistakes along the way.  I was hoping to get some feedback.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/16/game-20130116-095338-4a19c6ec.html

To my first question, on turn 10, my opponent bought a Duchy on a Duke board, which tipped his hand that he was going to make a move for Duchy-Duke.  When my turn 10 came up, even though I had enough for a Province and had been playing towards going for Provinces, I decided to buy a Duchy to counteract the Duchy-Duke game he was playing.  Was this the right move, or would I have been better off just carrying on with my plan?  My strategy in buying the Duchy (and subsequent Duchies and Dukes) was to eliminate points from the board that my opponent would be seeking while using the cards as fodder for my Apprentice (since I still needed to go for Provinces to win).

Also, in turn 13, shouldn't my opponent have Remodeled his Gold into a Duchy rather than trash out a Duchy for the last Duchy? (Note: in turn 12, I immediately regretted not doing the Remodel-Duchy-into-Duchy trick to remove points from the board.)  Seems like losing that Duchy might have been one of the pivotal moments of the game.

I would appreciate thoughts on the points above, as well as any other input people are willing to offer.

Thanks.

Rules Questions / Chancellor - Tunnel
« on: August 23, 2012, 02:14:43 am »
Hi, all.  I just finished a game on isotropic where I lost in large part due to a flawed opening.  I saw Chancellor and Tunnel in the kingdom and assumed I could use the Chancellor to discard my deck (containing Tunnels and get some early golds).  However, when I tried this, it didn't work.  Discarding an entire deck that includes Tunnels did not call up the "Reveal Tunnel" option, so I had to start over.  If using a Chancellor allows you to put your entire deck into your discard pile, why does this not count as "discarding" Tunnels other than during the clean-up phase (thus activating the "reveal for gold" feature)?

Any insight is appreciated.

Regards.

Dominion General Discussion / Slow / Time-consuming play
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:43:04 pm »
I'm still relatively new to the Dominion / Isotropic community, but I have a question regarding play etiquette.  I've noticed that some players take an exceptionally long amount of time per turn, sometimes due to delays and sometimes due to elaborate but unproductive card cycling techniques.  I've sat through three-minute turns of chained actions to see an ultimate result of a $4-5 card.  Is there a general protocol on this?  While I'm impressed when somebody can run up a million points using complicated Goons engines, I'm must less impressed when I have to keep telling the Duchess that, yes, I would like to keep the Gold that is on top of my deck as my opponent keeps running through an endless string of card cycles that lead to nothing.  If I'm in such a game and can't take it anymore, is it impolite to tell the other person congratulations and excuse myself from the game (as opposed to asking permission to forfeit, which I would generally do)?  Just would like to get a sense for the community mindset on this.

Thanks.
Matt

PS - I should note that the same question applies to situations where the opponent agonized for minutes at a time over what to buy w/ 3 coins or whether or not to take the Silver they've turned up w/ their Jester.  At what point is enough enough?

Help! / When should I have stopped buying Laboratories in this game?
« on: July 19, 2012, 05:14:53 pm »
Hi, all.  I posted a game the other day and appreciate the valuable feedback I've gotten.  I have another to throw out there for some insight:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/19/game-20120719-135754-452a4974.html

My opponent went to a very aggressive Fool's Gold strategy, while I opted to make use of the Laboratories (especially since he wasn't contesting that move).  I started buying Fool's Golds (rather than Silver) when I didn't have enough money for a Laboratory in Turn 3 to contest my opponent running away with the Fool's Golds.  In Turn 12, I had enough money for a Province, but opted to buy the Laboratory for two reasons: (i) I figured another Laboratory in my deck would help keep it from stalling once I started buying Provinces, and (ii) one more Laboratory for me was one fewer for my opponent (therefore making him more likely to stall if he tries to switch up strategies).

In restrospect, I probably would have bought a Hamlet instead of a Fool's Gold in one of my early turns (so I could capitalize on the +1 buy), but late in the game when I could afford Provinces, I didn't want to "waste" a turn buying Provinces to get myself a potential second buy.  Agreed?

A few questions, is there an "optimal" number of Laboratories to have in a deck?  In other words, did I stick w/ buying Laboratories for one too many turns, or did I stick w/ it the right amount of time?

Should I have even bothered contesting the Fool's Gold strategy, or was that generally a distraction I should have avoided (since it wasn't really part of my initial plan)?

I had planned to supplement my Laboratories with a Library, but given the way my opponent was going full-bore w/ the Fool's Gold strategy, I figured it was best to just stick w/ the Laboratories.  I don't think the Fool's Gold strategy was a particularly good one -- in what circumstances is a Fool's Gold strategy effective?

If my opponent had played a better game, how would you have supplemented the Laboratories to build a stronger and/or more efficient deck?

Any guidance offered is very much appreciated, and in any event, thanks at least for reading this far!

Help! / Feedback appreciated
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:13:41 pm »
Greetings.  I am a recent addition to the Dominion pantheon, and I feel like my gameplay could use a bit of direction.  Attached is the log for a game I just finished.  While I ultimately won the game, I felt like the win was more "reactive" than it was reading the board and formulating an up-front strategy.  Any feedback on the game progress, things I could have paid better attention to, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.
Matt
