Dominion General Discussion / Playing with people on this forum IRL
« on: July 13, 2013, 07:16:27 pm »
I haven't posted much lately, but just wanted to mention that this post (and the following post) in the Christianity thread caused two strangers to meet up IRL to play a game of Dominion! It was fun meeting and playing with him, although our paths probably won't cross again except on Goko (we're probably almost 1500 miles away from each other... it just so happened he was coming out my way). Any similar stories of meeting up with an online Dominion player to play IRL (that you didn't know previously)?

General Discussion / Regular Show
« on: June 13, 2013, 11:41:56 pm »
I was flipping channels last week and came across a hilarious cartoon called Regular Show. I'm going through the episodes in order now, and I'm up to season 3. Anyone watch it, and have a favorite character? Mine is Skips.

Dominion General Discussion / Yep, Guilds just leaked!
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:25:58 am »
Apparently someone just leaked all the Guilds cards... on our wiki! :o Probably not how DXV wanted it to go down, but I'm not complaining! :) Really excited about all the cards after reading them! I'm not sure how the Guild-type cards work though. Like, do they stay out the whole game? Feels like a very BM-friendly set, with the whole coin token theme. On the other hand, certain engines should fare pretty well. Oh boy, the more I look at it, the more excited I'm getting. Love what I'm seeing! So anyway, before you click the link, see what the first letter of each sentence in this paragraph spells. http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Guilds

Note: I am just freely expressing my personal opinions here. If you identify with the group I'm ranting on, please don't take it personally. It could be I'm just reading you wrong. I'd love to hear your points of view for us to discuss as a community.

I'm switching to Goko because I love playing Dominion. Of course I am annoyed by some aspects of Goko, such as the chat box and the avatars. Of course I think Isotropic Dominion is better. But the game of Dominion---the love of the game---is what will make me happily switch to Goko. I like Goko because there you can play Dominion, the game I get a lot of enjoyment out of. I do not understand why anyone would quit playing Dominion just because of Goko. Unless you're playing Dominion IRL, you're giving up playing the game I thought you enjoyed. I don't understand how people seem to love the website Isotropic more than the game Dominion. It should be about the game, not the website it's on.

Dominion General Discussion / $4 Junkers
« on: March 07, 2013, 10:04:22 am »
This is inspired by the recent comments in the Qvist $4 rankings thread. If you had Sea Hag and either Young Witch or Marauder on the board, what would make you (if ever) buy YW over Hag, or Marauder over Hag? Or, especially in the case of Marauder which deals out Ruins instead of Curses, is there a case to buy both? What are the best buying strategies, or does that depend too much on the board? I feel like I would buy Sea Hag over Young Witch except if there's Tunnel on the board, and I don't think I would ever buy Marauder over the other two (I haven't played DA yet though).

Goko Dominion Online / Maiden Osama?!?
« on: March 02, 2013, 03:57:09 pm »
In Adventure Mode Base Set: Act 2, Game 9, you play against Maiden Osanna, but when the game ends and her name reappears, it's smaller and blurrier and looks like "Osama." Coincidence? :o

Goko Dominion Online / Adventure Mode Stars
« on: March 02, 2013, 02:38:09 pm »
Any rhyme or reason to the 1-3 stars they give out per game? I got all 8 provinces one game and won by about 50 points and only got 2 stars. Maybe it was because I used zaps? Not that it matters, but anyone figure out the criteria for 1, 2, and 3 stars?

Game Reports / What would you do?
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:29:11 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201302/07/game-20130207-121945-b8d00c59.html

cards in supply: Festival, Gardens, Harvest, Highway, Jester, Margrave, Trader, Vault, Village♦, Wharf, and Young Witch

What would you do with this board full of goodies? And what do you on the (essentially) two different opening splits? I opened 5/2 with Wharf/nothing, trying to pick up more Wharves, some Villages to chain them together as well as protect me from curses, and also a couple of Traders to increase my deck size (in case I went Gardens which I planned to do and in fact did). I realize now that I could've probably *not* revealed the bane in order to gain a silver with trader, but oh well. Once I decided to get 2 gardens one turn and then 4 on the turn after, it was gg. I'd love to see some different (better?) strategies that you'd pick here.

Goko Dominion Online / Starting a Private Game
« on: February 06, 2013, 01:41:35 pm »
I don't understand how Private Game works. How do you allow someone (non-bot) to join a Private Game? In order to play with a friend of mine I have to make it a Request to Join game, but then sometimes I have to reject other people that try to play and I feel bad/it's annoying. Going into a near-empty lobby helps, but I still want to figure out Private Game mode. If it matters, we're both logged-in users.

Game Reports / Nice Menagerie/HoP board
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:42:37 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/28/game-20130128-143259-5b799ed6.html

cards in supply: Bank, Contraband, Familiar, Grand Market, Horn of Plenty, Menagerie, Militia, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Stables, and Woodcutter

So many cards here I wanna get... and I tend to get overwhelmed by boards like this because there's so much going on strategically and tactically. I'd appreciate your input. Anyway I open Potion/Woodcutter aiming for early Familiars... and I wanted a Militia ASAP to slow down my opponent. (Potion before Militia here, right?) Woodcutter over Silver here because I'll need the +buy and it's the only terminal besides Militia. For the deck variety, HoP is good as well as Menagerie (discard attack an added bonus to Menag). P-stones get really good, and are useful (along with HoP) to pick up GMs and other goodies. Fun game.

Dominion General Discussion / What helps you play?
« on: December 06, 2012, 06:36:42 pm »
What helps you improve as a Dominion player? Besides studying the game (reading this forum, watching videos...) and playing more games, I mean.

For example, I think providing my own commentary out-loud as I'm playing (imitating WW, Qvist, Robz88, etc. when they record games) helps me analyze boards better and keeps me focused on the game better. I've only done this a couple of times though. Have you tried this, and if so do you find it helps?

Help! / Big Money matchup

My losing streak continues... is BM-Moneylender stronger than BM-Envoy?!?!

Game Reports / Poor Warlord Bot!
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:50:10 pm »
http://dominionlogs.goko.com//20121128/log.50b67f0ee4b017518f8e00be.1354138230528.txt

This is Base only since I didn't register yet. I get 5/2 on a Witch/Chapel board so I started with that and tried to make an engine but lack of draw made it slow towards the end. And the game went extra long because Warlord Bot wasn't buying any Provinces. I checked back at the log to see what happened. He got a Moneylender and a Thief, but I went pure virtual coin so there was nothing to steal. My Throned Witches pounded him with curses, making him draw Curse, Curse, Silver, Curse, Curse (turn 9); Curse, Curse, Curse, Thief, Curse (turn 12); and Curse, Curse, Curse, Moneylender, Curse (turn 15)!

Dominion Strategy Wiki Feedback / December Featured Article and DYK?
« on: November 28, 2012, 11:51:50 am »
Hey guys, I think we should have a new Featured Article for the month of December, as well as a new Did You Know. So what should the next FA be? Isotropic looks good, but is missing content in some subsections under "History." Goko looks good as well and doesn't have any blank subsections, so dare I say Goko is better than Iso? :o

Help! / Wharf/FG loses to engine
« on: November 27, 2012, 10:08:08 pm »
After noticing I cracked the top 500, I hit a slump, including this game:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/27/game-20121127-190001-880e2258.html

cards in supply: Black Market, City, Coppersmith, Fishing Village♦, Fool's Gold, Highway, Hoard, Treasury, Village, Wharf, and Young Witch

There were good cards in the BM but I immediately notice Wharf/FG and start going to town, although I do acknowledge that FV is great with Wharf. I think Highways definitely helped him out, and I did eat all 10 curses from his YW by the time the game was over. I thought I could just barrel through with the two cards, but I guess not. Comments appreciated. Oh wow, I realize just now that FV was the freaking BANE wow, major fail on my part :-[

Game Reports / A game where Adventurer shines!
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:47:08 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/12/game-20121112-193509-fb75e8d4.html

Adventurer, Bureaucrat, Farmland, Festival, Harem, Ironworks, Noble Brigand, Oasis, Steward, and University

Weak board with no $5 save for Festival. I do wind up taking Festivals on $5s, but my main strategy involved opening Steward/Bureaucrat for trashing starting cards and giving me a deck full of Silver. Both these cards help Adventurer shine, and I'm proud of myself for seeing that right away. I get two Golds before my first Adventurer and ended up with 3 of each. It helped that my opponent went for Universities, but still I liked how my deck turned out.

Dominion Isotropic / Game Crash!

My game just crashed:

— thirtyseven's turn 13 —
thirtyseven plays a Spy.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... revealing an Estate and discarding it.
... letting scope keep an Estate.
thirtyseven plays an Inn.
... drawing 2 cards and getting +2 actions.
... discarding 2 cards.
thirtyseven plays a Ghost Ship.
... drawing 2 cards.

Dominion General Discussion / Turn Order and Greening
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:58:41 pm »
A thought just popped into my head just now: in a 2-player mirror match, which player should try to start greening first? Should it be player 2, being a turn behind, in order to try to "make up for lost ground" (this brings to mind the "taking risks as p2" thread I'm too lazy to find), or should it be player 1, in order to possibly make p2, a turn behind, start greening prematurely? I'm just wondering if turn order affects "greening order" (at least as a general tendency; of course it depends on the situation).

Dominion Strategy Wiki Feedback / Administrators and administrative tasks
« on: November 09, 2012, 01:21:33 pm »
I want to start a discussion on what are the responsibilities, criteria, and process for becoming an administrator on the wiki, as well as see who would be interested in becoming one and how many we should have at this point. (I'd be interested in becoming an admin.) Discuss!

Game Reports / Scrying Pool/Horse Traders combo
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:41:07 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/22/game-20121022-203333-7344a7b9.html

(important cards: Chapel, Scrying Pool, Horse Traders, Native Village)

This just makes me love Scrying Pool even more... I didn't realize it at first, but I could use Horse Traders to discard action cards that I can then easily draw back into my hand thanks to SP... got up to double Province by the end but the engine could have been better/faster if I thought of it sooner.

General Discussion / Favorite Webcomics
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:03:56 am »
What are some of your favorite webcomics? Inb4 xkcd. That's actually not even in my top 10 (I know, heresy ::)). Here are my top 10, in alphabetical order, with the two in bold being my overall favorites:

1. Buttersafe
2. Channelate
3. Cowbirds in Love
4. Doghouse Diaries
5. Invisible Bread
6. Left-Handed Toons
7. My Cardboard Life (characters are actual cut-outs, cool stuff)
8. Optipess
9. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
10. Toothpaste For Dinner

Game Reports / Scout/Harem/Steward/Embassy
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:05:23 pm »
I like how the four cards in the subject line synergized.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/04/game-20121004-165733-345a8bae.html

cards in supply: Embassy, Harem, Hunting Party, Market, Mining Village, Saboteur, Scout, Spice Merchant, Steward, and Throne Room

Here my opponent gets a 5/2 split with Embassy on the board, and does what you'd expect. I open 4/3 and go for Scout and Steward, Steward for trashing and Scout in anticipation of Harems. The top-deck-reordering helped because I could draw with Steward, too. I picked up an Embassy on my first $5. I went Harem over Gold because of Scout and to keep pace with his Turn 1 Embassy, and towards the end of the midgame went for Duchies on $6-7. I'm beginning to legitimately love Scout as a card. One question though, is 5/2 or 4/3 better on this board?

Game Reports / Scout board!
« on: October 01, 2012, 10:54:23 pm »
Well, Scout seemed useful here anyway...

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/01/game-20121001-192939-9bafffc1.html

cards in supply: Duke, Fairgrounds, Feast, Festival, Fortune Teller, Goons, Harvest, Minion, Nomad Camp, and Scout

Obvious Goons/Duke/SCOUUUUUT game here. But seriously, Scout looks good on this board because I'll be getting a lot of green, and it can help me determine whether or not I should discard with Minion. I didn't get $4 that often so only got 2 Scouts (NC was the better $4 to open with, and I got a couple early Silver with $4s to get to Goons/Minion faster...).

My general strategy was Goons on $6, Minion on $5, Scout on $4, and use all Goons buys. First time I got $8+ I got a Province for no reason, but other than that I stuck to my strategy. I like my opponent's strategy of picking up some Festivals for extra VP from Goons, and that kept it close. I was always ahead on Duchies though. Fun game

Puzzles and Challenges / Common trait puzzle
« on: September 27, 2012, 01:13:10 pm »
Go here and take a look at these four cards in a row: Smugglers, Warehouse, Caravan, Cutpurse.

1. What common trait do these four cards share?
2. What are the only two cards from the Base set that share this trait?
3. What are the two cards that I consider "honorable mentions"?

Game Reports / IW/Island/Develop vs. BM+Alchemist
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:51:35 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/13/game-20120913-184023-47ea60c8.html

I went IW/Island/Develop, opponent went... Big Money/Alchemist? Anyway it was fun getting the double bonus with IW/Island and then Developing IWs and the occasional Islands into Duchies and more Develops :)
