Rules Questions / End of game rules
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:52:19 pm »
I have what might be a newbie question but I need to explain the turn first that led up to it, I was playing a 2-player game with my brother.

First I played a Throne Room, and a Cellar.  Then I took my two cellar actions -- the first one was an Embargo.  I chose the money option for the Embargo and took my two coppers into my hand, and then the other action was a Woodcutter.  (I was going to play my Thief but I couldn't since my brother's deck was empty.  Anyway I'm sure he had a secret chamber to block the attack.)  I used the Woodcutter buy to get a curse (which I put in my brother's discard pile) and then took a silver for the money part.  Back to the TR'd cellar, I discarded 3 cards and picked up 6.  Then for my buy phase I had 10 money in my hand so I discarded the treasures, bought a province, and remembered that I would have 2 extra money next turn.

When I discarded the rest of the cards I picked up my 5 card hand for next round.  One was a mining village which I was immediately able to trash for a silver, but then I had to discard one card to get down to 5.

Now it was my brother's turn.  He bought the last province and I wondered, does he get to finish his turn or does the game end immediately?

I should have also had trashing 2 treasure maps from hand without using an action...

Goko Dominion Online / Randomizer

Is there a way on Goko to specify conditions for the random sets?  Like, 3 Dark Ages cards, exclude Swindler, etc.?

Dominion General Discussion / "Missing the reshuffle"
« on: March 04, 2013, 04:08:08 am »
I'm still basically a Dominion beginner, and I'm having a hard time understanding the concept of a card "missing the reshuffle" -- I feel like I only sort of half-understand what this means, and I'm also not sure how the concept applies when you're actually playing (i.e. how to recognize it or avoid it)

Dominion General Discussion / Starting with 14 coppers
« on: February 11, 2013, 04:53:07 am »
A while back on BGG, there was a discussion with newer players about the wisdom of buying copper.  Someone said something to the effect that if one player starts with 14 coppers instead of 7 they will lose 99% of the time.

This seems like an interesting question to me; having all that money in your deck at the start would let you buy more 5's but you'd have to wait a while to get them back.  How much of an advantage do you think the regular deck person would have over the 14 copper/3 estate deck?

Dominion General Discussion / Deck construction
« on: December 15, 2012, 10:26:38 pm »
One thing I've noticed playing Dominion with a number of different new players is that people who don't have any background in CCGs take a while to get their minds around the concept of deck construction -- the idea that they're trying to shape and construct their overall deck rather than just buying single cards every round that look good.

I've wondered a few times whether you could make a learning exercise by playing a few "games" where you start out by constructing a deck (with some limitations) rather than just starting with the 3 estates and 7 coppers.  I've never actually tried this but it seems like it would have the potential to help people start to visualize their purchases as contributing to a deck rather than just "do I have one of these yet?" or "It seems like I keep running out of actions, better buy some villages".

Another idea i had was to play some learning games where the players can look through their discard pile every time they reshuffle so they can better see what their current deck looks like.

Any thoughts?

I was discussing with someone the other day how newer players (I did this too) mostly look at Curse as -1 VP and overlook the negative effect it has with clogging your deck.

This made me wonder -- let's say that the -1 VP was removed from Curse so that its only effect was to clog your deck.  How overpriced are the curse-giving cards now?  Would you buy a Witch at $4?  Would Sea Hag be $3?

(I suppose this may have more than theoretical relevance depending on what the Dark Ages cards turn out to be...)

Game Reports / Arrrrgh!

I went for a Peddler/Salvager strategy, and it was working pretty well, and on turn 16 I drew a peddler and salvager so at worse I could get the last province and split 4-4, and I suspected I had more estates than he did.  He bought the second to last province, but that was fine, because I've got this nice peddler that I drew along with the salvager.  Good thing I have the peddler!  It sure will be nice to get use out of that peddler on my turn!

   --- chriskern's turn 17 ---
   chriskern plays a Peddler.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action and +$1.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I lost by 3 points :(
