Other Games / f.ds MTG Online play?
« on: February 19, 2016, 01:27:04 pm »
I know we tried to organize a draft or something like ages ago, and it didn't work well.

However, since then some things changed. Now there is a online, free client (xmage) and you can play all formats there, make tourneys - including drafts/cubes of all sorts. It also implement rules i.e. it's automated.

I am MalReynolds there, usually on german server. If somebody is up for some games you can message me (best here, also any format works), or if there is enough interested parties we can make a draft or some other kind tourney.

General Discussion / Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes; Video/Live Game
« on: October 11, 2015, 11:35:27 am »
I just found out about this awesome "Video Game". So, one player is at a computer, and he needs to diffuse a bomb, Hollywood style. It has all sort of bomby-puzzles. Thing is, he needs the manual to solve them, and he doesn't have it.
So, other player (1-5) have the manual - either printed, or on their phones, or over skype on another computer - but they are not allowed to see the actual bomb. Goal is to communicate and diffuse it together. Manual is complex enough that it cannot be easily memorized (too many steps in each puzzle), and it gets progressively harder, so I am not too worried about complexity, esp as you can play it with new people.

I played it for few hours this afternoon with my nephew, and it was a BLAST (pun intended). We got through easy levels and really to stuck at moderate ones - time limits are a bitch. Extremely fun, recommend it to everybody.

We could even try it here.

General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress!
« on: July 26, 2014, 04:06:56 pm »
So, I've just recently started playing and I do know they are some players around here (Jorbles? sudgy?) so I though, why not start a thread.
For those that do not know, DF is kind of a very complex civ building game which is bound to cause a huge amount of frustration FUN!

So, I've had few fortresses so far. First three (not counting test ones) weren't that impressive - there were dozen bedrooms and me trying out to set up some semblance of industry. First one died out cause I was trying out stuff and I flooded half the fortress, and people mysteriously started dying later. In second one everybody refused the work and started hunting vermin cause they had no food (a big wave of migrants came), and I couldn't come back from it. In third I got a necromancer invasion in like first year, which completely destroyed me. I got hang of the ropes, though.

So, than came my first somewhat successful fortress. on ground floor I had a moat with a drawbridge and 2 tile wide fortified wall all-around, I even had some sembalance of army (only one squad of ill-equipped archers which I seriously couldn't get to train EVER even though I've put them on train shechule and I've build archery practice range, they just refused to train (still not sure how to do it) ) that I could at least order to patrol and/or kill on order. I had huge bedrooms with engraved rocks all around, huge waterfall going through the fortress (artificial, but pump-less), farming was set up and I was also making quite a lot of quality crafts for trade. I have some very poor metal industry and was dabbling in other industries, but things were working well.
And than shit hit the fan. I had no idea that their clothes can rot until they started throwing tantrums about having to go around naked. I also had no cloths of any sort to start making shirts and trousers, so I had to trade for it. I was so focused on trying to get clothes industry going that I didn't notice that my corpse stockpile was full and a dead yak was laying in the dining room until it started rotting. Now, miasma clouds + lack of cloths + a guy committing cause he wasn't able to complete his artifact made quite a few dwarves unhappy. Even though they were all in cloths, they continued to throw tantrums without a break. Tantrums led to violence, violence led to deaths, deaths led to more unhappy dwarfs (I also had no jail at first so I had to release the first murderer, which made for even more unhappy dwarves) I fell into a trap called "tantrum spiral".
So, I decided to raise the drawbridge and not let the new migrant dwarves (~20 of them) in until all the unhappy dwarves killed themselves first, and than try to clean the things up with a new batch of fresh, happy dvarves. I also closed the waterfall and made a back entry somewhere through the waterfall.
So, everybody in died, but it took a while and upstair dwaves got fed up with waiting a bit. I let them in and start cleaning up - I though that I had a chance to coming back. Unfortunately, I forgot to re-seal the back entry and when I turned the waterfall back on, it started flooding the farms, people fell down the waterfall shaft, other dwarves that tried to rescue them got drowned to, I had to seal the whole section off and.. well, I was back where I started, tantrum spiral #2.

Now, my few fortress is built with more care (old one was fun but disorganized). I finally got completely hang of Therapist, and quickfort, so things are going more smoothly. I quite like where I am right now, I got a few food industries going, other stuff is getting set up but the dwarves are quite happy and working and I hope they'll stay that way. The main problem is that currently my defenses are low and I have problems with thives, but I'll fix that up soon.

Rules Questions / Vault/Tunnel Timing question
« on: February 20, 2014, 10:23:15 am »
So I was playing IRL.

I have 2 tunnels in hand. Deck is empty, everything is in discard.

Opponent plays Vault. If I choose to discard 2 tunnels for Vault's sideeffect, what happens?

a) I discard two, gain 2 Golds, shuffle the old discard + Golds and draw a card or
b) I discard two, shuffle, draw a card and than gain 2 Golds, putting them in new (empty) discard pile ?

Non-Mafia Game Threads / f.ds Custom Dixit! WATNO WINS!
« on: December 05, 2013, 08:11:17 pm »
So, they other thread didn't really get much response (that, plus I realized I cannot get into a game on that French Site because I am in too many already) so I decided to do this, hopefully more people will bite.

F.DS DIXIT!

Rules:

PREGAME:

1. I will make a collection of pictures (cards) to be used in game. However, both players and spectators can also submit cards by PMing them to me (lets say max 10 each). Cards images should be portrait-oriented (higher than wide) and in spirit of Dixit: surreal-ish and without a real 'meaning'.

2*. Player will have the access to this library and are allowed to familiarize with cards, but I trust them not to abuse this power (like, check every single card for similarity every time). (I did not make the all the same size as I planned to, due to practical reasons).

3. I  reserve the right to reject some images if I think they don't really fit or are to similar to some others.

GAME:

1. Preferably we will have 6 players and 2-3 rounds. We can accommodate other number of players/rounds too, but in future riles I will assume that we are playing 6 players, 3 rounds, to keep it simple.

2. At the start of the game, players are dealt 6 cards. (regardless of number of players).

3. Each round consists of 6 turns, one for each player.

4. During his turn, player who's turn it is (called storyteller) PMs me a card that he has in hand, and posts a 'description' of the card in thread.

5. Description can be anything from one word (or even less) to a paragraph of text or a song even. it doesn't really need to be exactly 'a description', it can be anything that relates to the card in any way. You usually only want to describe the card vaguely but sufficiently.

5a.* No links to other sites, videos or pictures allowed, words only. Also, you should not use internet to "research" anything. I cannot force this, but I would prefer if you guys ignored the physical qualities of the image (size, resolution) and focused only on the image itself.

5b*. Please, keep all the discussion/explanation for after the votes are revealed and before next storyteller sends me the image.

6. Each other player than PM me the card from their hand that they think matches the posted description the best.

7. When everybody PMs me their cards, I post them all in thread. Than, each player (except the storyteller) PMs me which card do they think is the storyteller's card. (They can't choose their own card).

8. When I receive all the votes, we than proceed to scoring the turn. Scoring goes as following:
a) If nobody OR everybody choose storyteller's card, he scores 0p and everybody else scores 2p.
b) Otherwise, if at least 1 person chose storyteller's card and at least 1 person 'missed', storyteller scores 3p.
c)* In any case, all non-storyteller player score 1 point for each 'vote' on their card. (up to max of 3 points)
d) If you guess the storyteller's card correctly, you gain 3p.

9. Everybody draws a card, and the turn ends.

10. Round ends when all players have been the storyteller (have taken the turn). After 3 rounds, the game is over and the person with highest score wins. In case of a tie, I guess, they rejoice in their shared victory!

So, a question.

What is the maximum points you can get per turn, reliably and repeatably, every turn, for the rest of the game?

Edit: Single player only.

When you gain this during your Action phase, you may put it in your hand.

Action Phase clause is mostly to prevent newbies to play them after buying them and putting them in hand. Though it could make a difference, with Farmland for example.

Introductory post

Mafia Ruleset (blatantly stolen from Axxle, as per tradition)
Rules with * are new or changed, read them.

Game Rules:

Sign-ups and Pre-game:
1*. First 13 people the sign-up will play. Any additional sign-ups will be put into replacement queque, in case somebody drops out.
2*. Once we get 13 sign-up. I'll send Role PMs. Your either get a "VT" "Mafia Goon" or "a PR" role. You won't immedately know what PR are you.
3*. We will wait until everybody confirms. Prolonging this stage might be considered cheating.
4*. After everybody confirms, Mafia gets 24 hours to decide which PRs to choose. After they do, they will be distributed to selected Townies and than the game will begin.

General Gameplay and Etiquette:
1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind.  Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it.  Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage via Quicktopic.
3. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline.  If I do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions.  In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6*. You can send early or conditional actions if you are sure what you will do during the Night.
7. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 48 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:
1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.  Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax!  Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous. *Format might change if I get around to making an auto-counter.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. This game will generally have 7 days day deadlines. Some deadlines will be extended so that the do not end on weekends but on Monday instead. If a player or No Lynch does not have a simple majority at deadline, no lynch will occur, and the game will go into night. And 2 days nights.
8. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
9*. Dead Mafia players will be restrained from posting in Quicktopic.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:
1. Bold, green text is reserved for the Mod.  No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is math-based cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mod privately.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.
5*. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity on demand by players.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
8. If a one-shot power is roleblocked, the power IS used up.
9. Do not edit or delete posts.  We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.
10*. Please no linking to google-docs and similar stuff that you can change and I cannot verify (links to scummafia wiki and similar is fine).
11*. Any question to the Moderator concerning your role or similar hidden information is to be PMed. Any public question that you might ask need to be written in red.

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game.

Game Setup
Game Setup information:

This game has a open setup, Pick Your Poison.
Everything is the same, except the power roles have been changed to these:
2-shot Jailkeeper, Doctor, 1-shot Cop, Watcher, 2-shot Vigilante.

So, the setup is:
3 Goons
3 Power Roles  (power chosen by Mafia, 3 out of 5)
7 Vanilla Townies

Here are all the role PMs that will be in the game:

Quote
Down you went and came back empty
Down you went and came back empty
Down you went and came back empty
Early in the morning.

You searched the bottom of the seabed thoroughly, but you never find anything useful to bring back up top. It's all Coppers and Estates down there. People probably thought you were a waste of resources most of the time.

You are a Pearl Diver (Vanilla Townie).

Your weapon is your vote.  You have no night actions.

You win when all Mutineers are eliminated.

Quote
Open the box and see the treasure
Open the box and see the treasure
Open the box and see the treasure
Early in the morning

Your excellent underwater swimming skills have paid off nicely, you have found a small ornate box that is sure to hold one of the captains treasures. Now you just had to get it open and see what was inside

You are a Pearl Diver (Power Role).

You have a night (or day) action. You just don't know what it is until you open the chest. Now, where did you put that crowbar?

You win when all Mutineers are eliminated.

Quote
First the captain now the divers
First the captain now the divers
First the captain now the divers
Early in the morning

You are a Mutineer (Mafia Goon). You and your colleagues <Names> have sucessfully started your mutiny aboard the PS Vaccarino, now you just need to finish the job.

You can talk with your other mutineers <quick topic> and decide what 3 treasures you threw into the sea.

Each night phase, one of you or your partners may perform the factional kill.

You win if the Mutineers comprise at least half the town, or if nothing can prevent the same from happening.
---
Before the game starts, one of you or your partners needs to choose 3 among these 5 treasure (Roles) to give to the Pearl Divers (Town):

A box of oranges (Doctor)
Captain's daughter (1-Shot Cop)
Pet monkey, Ozle (Watcher)
Capt'n Secret Special Spicy 180° Proof Rum, (2-Shot Jailkeeper)
Flintlock swordcane (2-Shot Vigilante)

You have 24 hours after confirmation phase ends to PM this choice.
You can read what each role does in the opening post of the game thread.

Quote
Put 'im in the bed with the Captain's daughter
Put 'im in the bed with the Captain's daughter
Put 'im in the bed with the Captain's daughter
Early in the morning

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found a Captain's daughter!

Huh! No wonder Ol' Captain is dead when he kept a woman aboard. Everybody knows it brigs bad luuc..
Oh, I see.. Captain's daughter is a whip! And a good one!
Now you only need to convince somebody to bed her. You'll just whip them and until they admit that they are the Mutineers.

(After they hear the screams coming from her first victim, nobody else will bed the Captain's Daughter, no matter how curvy she is.
Yes, whips do have curves.)

You are a 1-Shot Cop.
Once during the game, at night, you may send me a PM with a player you want to investigate. You will get a receive a PM with a result of either "Pearl Diver (Town)" or  "Mutineer (Mafia)".

Quote
Nothing rhymes with a box of oranges
Nothing rhymes with a box of oranges
Nothing rhymes with a box of oranges
Early in the morning

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found a Box of Oranges!

Everybody knows an orange a day keeps scurvy away. Also cures stab and bullet wounds, apparently.

You are a Town Doctor.
Once each night, PM me a name of a player that you wish to protect. That player is saved from one shot or stab that night.

Quote
Release the monkey and he will watch them
Release the monkey and he will watch them
Release the monkey and he will watch them
Early in the morning

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found the Pet monkey, Ozle!

He is just sitting in his cage and looking you with those big, watery, sad eyes and squealing something that sounds awfully like "Momma".
Once you release the Kraken Pet monkey, as he is quite a naughty monkey, he will follow a person and spy on him.

You are a Watcher.
Each night phase, you may send me a PM with a name of a player. You will receive a PM telling you which of the player(s) visited "watched" player that night. (Any action counts as a 'visit').

Quote
Get 'em drunk for then they're useless
Get 'em drunk for then they're useless
Get 'em drunk for then they're useless
Early in the morning

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found Capt'n Secret Special Spicy 180° Proof Rum !

Unfortunately, it is only half full (or half empty, depending on your general stance in life)
Legends are told about where this Rum came from, but you don't really care. You know that it is strong enough to knock out the Leviathan himself, and also has strong anesthetic properties. Once you get somebody to drink just a sip of it, he'll be incapacitated during the night, and won't feel anything shooting, slashing or other evilly deed performed on him.

You are a 2-shot Jail Keeper.
Two times during the game, at night, you may send me a PM with a name of a player. You will protect him from all nightkills, and also blocks their role for that night (any actions they take are not carried out).

Quote
Stab 'em shoot 'em cause they are traitors
Stab 'em shoot 'em cause they are traitors
Stab 'em shoot 'em cause they are traitors
Early in the morning

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found the Flintlock swordcane!

It's a flintlock pistol, with a sword attached, and when put into scabbard, it's a walking cane!
Unfortunately, you still have both of your legs so you cannot make a good use of that cane, but..
You can shoot and stab (once each) a Mutineer!

You are a 2-Shot Vigilante.
Twice during the game, at 2 different nights, you may send me a PM with a player you want to kill.
TO CLARIFY, I AM NOT A MODERATOR OF F.DS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.  IN THE CONTEXT OF THIS GAME, I AM MODERATING THAT THE RULES ARE FOLLOWED AND HIDDEN ACTIONS ARE COMPLETED PROPERLY.

5*. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity on demand by players.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.

Game Setup information:

This game has a open setup, Pick Your Poison.

Here are all the role PMs that will be in the game:

Quote
Down you went and came back empty
Down you went and came back empty
Down you went and came back empty
Early in the morning.

You searched the bottom of the seabed thoroughly, but you never find anything useful to bring back up top. It's all Coppers and Estates down there. People probably thought you were a waste of resources most of the time.

You are a Pearl Diver (Vanilla Townie).

Your weapon is your vote.  You have no night actions.

You win when all Mutineers are eliminated.

Quote
Open the box and see the treasure

Open the box and see the treasure
Early in the morning

Your excellent underwater swimming skills have paid off nicely, you have found a small ornate box that is sure to hold one of the captains treasures. Now you just had to get it open and see what was inside

You are a Pearl Diver (Power Role).

You have a night (or day) action. You just don't know what it is until you open the chest. Now, where did you put that crowbar?

You win when all Mutineers are eliminated.

Quote
First the captain now the divers
First the captain now the divers

Pet monkey, Ozle (Tracker)
Capt'n Secret Special Spicy 180° Proof Rum (Jailkeeper)
Flintlock swordcane (2-Shot Vigilante)

You have 24 hours after confirmation phase ends to PM this choice.
You can read what each role does in the opening post of the game thread.

When you have finally opened the chest, you were in for a surprise!
Inside you've found the Pet monkey, Ozle!

He is just sitting in his cage and looking you with those big, watery, sad eyes and squealing something that sounds awfully like "Momma".
Once you release the Kraken Pet monkey, as he is quite a naughty monkey, he will follow a person and spy on him.

You are a Watcher.
Each night phase, you may send me a PM with a name of a player. You will receive a PM telling you which of the player(s) visited "watched" player that night. (Any action counts as a 'visit').

I have no idea why they did it the way they did.

Why is there a reason for me to see all games being played? Just so I can join to spectate, theoretically? It is just cluttering and annoying, and it makes it hard to distinguish open games. And you cannot really even spectate right now. And if you did, you should have an option (default: on) to hide them. Or something.

Why the need to divide people into rooms? Even more importantly, why are people playing games counted towards the maximum of 50 people in a room? It makes finding a game such a hard task to do: You need to go from room to room to find an open game. Especially one where people have more than just a base and also want to play with new players that don't have high ratings and also a two player game.
Yes, I could host, but I don't cards cept the base and some few others. Yes, I could buy, but I don't want at least not at this point.

Forum Games / MXXIII: Second Chance Mafia (CANCELED)
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:25:11 pm »
Hi. Detailed rules will be posted soon, now only the basics:

You get to replay one of the roles that you were before, here, on the forums. Hence, you need to have been in at least one game as town, and in at least one game as scum.

The factions will be determined at complete random, and you have same chances of being town/scum, irregardless o (let say, if a player was scum 7 times and town 3, he has same chances to be town as one who was scum only once and town 15 times).

Please state if you are interested, and it would be extremely helpfull if you posted what roles you were in which previous game.

Eligible games are:
All regular and Blitz Mafias except Hydra.
Role Madness (and, I guess, SOME BM) roles will be decided on individual basis - though I think I cannot fit stuff from EHalc's RM, which features health points of sorts.

Co-mod: sudgy, others may apply.

IN:
Fuzzers
Invisiyuma
Ash

This seems like an OKish combo. Pretty much if you manage to chain 2x Rabble + Ghost Ship you ruin their next turn, completely. If you manage to repeat it, it's a soft-lock.  ;D

Thoughts?
