Haha, didn't expect this thread to blow up. I agree about Chapeling the Coppers. Knowing he plays this Kingdom a lot makes me feel a little better, I guess. (Thank you for the research!) But I really ought to have been able to discern at least some of the critical features of the deck on the first go-round.

Here it is. Rereading it, I see that I did get some bad draws, and also did some pretty dumb things (including getting Worker's Village/Smithy when I thought I had 3 buys; should have gotten Worker's Village/Quarry, I guess).

In fact, it's possible to have this playing 'perfectly' - a little luck can lead to MASSIVE blowouts in such games. Heck, first turn advantage can lead to massive blowouts in such games. Hard to say too much more without seeing a log.

but I would guess that only 1 Quarry is almost certainly wrong here. WW, Wharf, Goons, GM will give massive +buy, and you want the stuff to be as cheap as possible. There is no reason to buy other money than Quarry, and if you Chapel down, you will need 3 of them.
But that's really an insane game, Chapel/Quarry/GM is exremly stong, and here we have a setting with it where you want to ignore the GM.
Yup, exactly. It's obvious in hindsight that I misplayed this, but even opening Curse/Curse would almost never lead to me losing by 381 points in 11 turns.

Already closed out, but I can get it when it goes up on councilroom or something. I can just summarize it here, too.

We both opened Quarry/Chapel. He had somewhat better draws early on (maybe? maybe I was just playing terribly?) and got an early Wharf and got rid of a bunch of Estates. Being stupid, I chose not to Chapel too much and instead went for an early Goons. He ended up grabbing 3 Quarries to my one. He stayed away Markets and Grand Markets and just got a bunch of King's Courts, Wharves, and Worker's Villages. I built my deck up slowly, Chapeling stuff but not enough, and stayed on one Quarry. He had a turn where he King's Courted a bunch of Worker's Villages and Wharves. After that turn it was a one-turn shitshow, since all three of his Quarries were up by the end of that. He bought five or six more King's Courts (costing $1, the only non-free action card), the nine remaining Goons(es?), and some Grand Markets. Final turn, he drew his whole deck with Worker's Villages, King's Courted a bunch of Goons and Grand Markets, played the rest of his Goons(es?), and had what I guess must have been forty-one buys. +9VP for each buy and you see the result.

The game is over! (Goons, King's Courts, and Worker's Villages are all gone.)
ScottyMO has 385 points (369 ▼, a Colony, and a Province) and took 11 turns.
occupy grand market has 4 points (4 ▼) and took 10 turns.

Chapel, Quarry, Wharf, and the three cards mentioned above were key. Grand Markets were also in the mix but hardly played a role. No idea what to say except I'm done for the night.

I've been doing quite well since seeing this thread and I think a big reason why is I'm going "back to basics" - making sure to buy a lot of money, keeping a low number of terminal action cards, etc. I think I was really going hard for exotic strategies and reproducing the best hands I'd ever had, and stuff like that. These are probably bigger issues for me than for most people, but keeping myself realistic about draws and reminding myself I've got an opponent who's doing his or her thing while I do mine are huge, too.

Introductions / Hi!

I've been playing on isotropic for six or eight months, but I'm just now discovering this site (and other things, like the councilroom.com features, leaderboard, etc.). I recognize a lot of names, mostly of people who have regularly slaughtered me, and thought I'd say hey. Glad to be here!

Welcome!  We need an intros forum.  Theory?

I spent several minutes looking for this when I joined yesterday. I was sure there would be one!

Not a single solution that doesn't involve Lighthouse?

Here's one:

Your opponent's hand contains 4 Curses and a Hamlet (which you know because of Cutpurse or whatever). His deck contains 10 Grand Markets and 10 Markets (which you know because you've been paying careful attention. Also, his entire deck is currently in his discard.

Your deck has 3 Curses, a Colony, an Ambassador, and a bunch of Peddlers and Treasuries. You also have your entire pile in your discard.

You are ahead by more than 20 points; the game is close to ending (1 card left in a third pile). This was your last action and you have no money to spend. If you do anything but give him your Colony, he will be able to buy the last Colony and a few Provinces on his turn to win. By giving him a Colony, he now has a 1 in 21 chance of drawing that Colony with his Hamlet, thus disabling him completely. On your turn you could then easily end the game with the win.

Sure it's just a 1 in 21 chance of winning, but that's the best move compared to an ensured loss!

So why not just return 0 to the supply? Because that give you a chance of drawing 3 Curses + 1 Colony + Ambassador; thus once again being unable to buy the last card. By returning 1 to the supply, you guarantee that you can buy the last card on your turn to win.

I'm not sure this one works. You could just as easily get rid of the Curses to get space in your deck (and fill up space in his).

I'm also in the Somerville/Cambridge area. I know quite a few other people who enjoy Dominion (own some sets, have played on isotropic a bit, know most of the cards, etc.), but several of them will be moving in a few weeks.

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry

I got King's Court -> Masqueraded a couple weeks ago in a deck where it enabled him to just trash all my cards. Is that the "pin"?

I also won a pretty nasty Highway/King's Court -> Feast game today that was just completely inappropriate (one opponent said "oh hell no, this is just ridiculous"; the other one said "what just happened???"). I'm sorry!

One thing I've noticed about my playstyle before is that I tend to "go with the flow" more than most people advise, buying whatever is available or adding things to my deck as is convenient rather than forcing a specific strategy. In some cases, it sounds like that really haunted me. I will make an effort to be more diligent on that front as well.

Just thought I'd chime in and mention I've noticed this about my own play. It doesn't always affect me, especially with cards I know very well, but often when I play an opponent ranked in the 30s or 40s I start to feel that they know what they're doing in some essential way that I don't. And I get crushed in that situation. The other situation where I have recently been ridiculously, just ridiculously slaughtered is when the game has cards I love and I go for them without really looking at the others for context. Both situations seem to share some kind of complacency on my part.

You're in a Gardens/Vineyard/Fairgrounds game and you have a lot of Hagglers in play. You've played sufficient Highways/Princesses/Bridges such that a Colony is worth $1 or $2 and everything else is worth $0. You're heavily laden with the aforementioned green cards. Your opponent has a lighthouse in play. You can maximize the size and diversity of your deck by maximizing the number of Colonies you buy this turn, since you'll be able to Haggle for more cards only from buying the Colonies.
