By the way, whatever happened to this? http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=19706.0

in the English game it's Church
the name there is used in the German version (apparently)

People get matched against people of similar skill levels; the skill multiplier isn't the story of good players beating bad players. Black Market has a skill multiplier of 1.23, which is crazy high. It feels high-luck; it's actually high-skill. ... Smithy meanwhile is high-luck and no-one complains about it. That's just how it goes. (Swindler is an example of a card that looks high-luck and is).
...
The hexes have a skill multiplier of 1.00; they don't have an effect on our ability to predict the winner from skill level. Isn't that interesting.

I'm super interested in this data, can a kind soul direct me to the best way to find it?

So is Captain more or less simply Band of Misfits that works both now and next turn, for a cost of instead of ? That sounds way way better than BoM.

on the surface, yes!

although there is different wording to watch out for between Band of Misfits / Overlord / Captain (which appear to be mostly stronger for the Captain... for example Overlord pretending to be sir martin will result in a trashed overlord if it hits another knight... but captain I believe will stay in your deck)

Imagine how would you feel if you come back to this post and see those picture again 10 years from now... priceless memory...  :'(

It's definitely a weird memory lane after 7 years - some of them I remember exactly, maybe even more so than the actual ones, others my brain feels like it hasn't even seen before.

Thanks!

I was startled because I didn't think I'd seen it do anything this bad since I started playing shuffle it a few weeks back, but maybe I just haven't been paying attention to its nonsense.

7
do the folks running shuffle it want feedback if we stumble on a bad bot strategy?

My bot just a) played a masquerade and passed me a province when he had other things he could have passed b) optionally trashed a province to my bishop play to no benefit, twice.

Does the bot attempt to adjust to what you're doing and learn from you? I haven't bought any provinces because I'm fucking with bishops.

Game #27996496, unrated.
me vs lord rattybot
(please don't look at the log and judge my skills, I'm hung over)

Thanks!

Season 13 is underway now but if you're quick.... we still have room for one D player and one E player.

Still need someone? I started to sign up earlier, decided I wanted to spend less time on Dominion... then promptly spent a shit ton of time on Dominion after all.

Isotropish has me at level 33 (#379) right now. Couldn't find a link on whether that matches up with D or E. Don't care, just like playing.

I think I'd like to spend a little less time on Dominion, not more

Thanks

eight cards I love more than I should:

Forge
Tournament
Menagerie
Duke
Knights
Rats
Swindler
Black Market

I sadly haven't played with Guilds enough to have real favorites there.

I bought one of these hobby lobby boxes, and it seems they have changed the divider grooves on newer models.  Fair warning to anyone who buys one now.  Instead of dividing in to four rows vertically, it now divides in to three horizontal (and they are different sizes not appropriate for Dominion cards).

so... is this box a bust now?
I was finally going to get around to buying it...

I want a nice storage solution but I'm really really really not handy.

My objection to "Princing a Prince" not being useful is that it would lead to more in-game singing of:
and we should have more of that, when you think about it

Guess the other question is '[when] will Goko get this?"
Having no inside information whatsoever, at this point my first guess is never. As always I have to concede to the possibility that they've been rewriting the entire program from scratch and then everyone had to take maternity leave.

I kind of love you.

How many people on here live in the Manhattan area?
Me and rrenaud.  Contact us if you want to play!

I'm in NYC and would def come to Manhattan to play Dominion. I'm not super vocal around here, nor very active at all on Goko, but I was an isotropic addict. I suspect I'll get wrecked by most of the people here... but some real life Dominion would be awesome, it's been too long.
So... any/all of you hit me up!

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Legal Advice

Well I work in Manhattan and live just outside.. basically if I go "out to dinner" I'm looking at spending $40 per person easily, and that's just the cheapest it can possibly be at an actual sit-down restaurant (not a quick burger or pizza or sandwich).  I would say most "non-fancy" places are in the $15-$30 range for the main course.  If you have wine or something that's $10-$15 on the low end.  Plus tipping.  So if I take someone out on a date, and you get drinks in addition to dinner, then it gets up to $100 pretty easily.  And I'm not talking fancy at all.. just your standard Manhattan small restaurant.  Yes it can be cheaper, but it gets fairly expensive fairly quickly.  And if you want to go to a nicer place.. well, prices just go up and up.

I grew up, however, in the Midwest, where you'd probably spend 60% of that for the same amount of food/drinks.  Of course, the quality is better here.  Anyway, my point was, the amount that a "normal" person spends on food is much different in a big city than it is in the rest of the country.

I stopped by Katz about a year and a half ago.. sandwiches were pretty expensive, I would say, up in the $12-$14 range.  I was kind of taken aback because of how well reviewed the place was.. I really wasn't very impressed, and I'm generally happier with the $7 or $8 subs at any deli in Midtown.

I went to dinner last week in Manhattan. Sit down place (Vegetarian Dim Sum House in Chinatown). It was me, my kid, and an adult. Food / tax / tip was $38 (it was about $30 or $31 and I tipped up to $38). We had a small amount of food to bring home left over.

From my experience, $40 per person is fancy and/or involves alcohol, even in Manhattan.

Of course, last month I also went to some stupid bar in Midtown that involved $16 cocktails.

16
if by chance there's another one, I hope it's a 'regular' size one. The half size (Guilds, Cornucopia, Alchemy) are quite expensive per card by comparison.

The thing about promo cards is that they are designed as promotional tools.  I don't know the history on the existing promos, but wasn't Stash published to commemorate Dominion winning the SdJ?  And Governor and Walled Village for anniversaries of Puerto Rico and Carcassonne?

What is happening this year that would prompt a promo?  My guess is that this will be the online-only promo intended to promote Goko.

Goko
Action - $3

+2 Coins. Each player trashes the top card of their deck, representing their favorite online gaming platform, and gains a sucky card of supposedly equal value that you choose.

Hmm…

Goko
Action - $4

Trash a card costing $0 from your hand. If you do, the player to your left chooses a card in the supply costing $3 or more. Gain that.

This only works if you used Highway or Bridge to make Grand Market cost $0, then you trash it and Reverse Highway/Bridge to make Copper cost $3 (although I suppose one could argue that Goko has worked its way up to Silver level, when you use the extension)

18
Top of my list would be Sea Hag. It's not very interesting mechanically, and it generally just slows the pace of the game to a crawl, particularly in multiplayer, but it's usually too strong to ignore, and adds a lot of early game variance in what cards get flipped.

what if sea hag instructed (obviously exact wording would differ)
"opponents reveal the top card of their deck. if it's a curse, they discard it. if it's not a curse, they put it back. opponents gain a curse on top of their deck". that dumps the swinginess of what gets flipped, but it saves you from the problem of getting triple sea hagged and getting three curses on top.

19
here's where I talk shit about Adventurer again.

20
I think the best second game is a very slightly tweaked version of the first game.

And Militia is a good 'first game' attack. Enough to be effective, not tortuous.

Don't do Swindler or Torturer with the brand new folks.
And dear god not Ghost Ship. Those games are tedious as hell.

There is no way that Goko and RGG are going to agree to an iso-style implementation that co-exists with Goko - even if it is password protected for only Goko purchasers.

I just wrote to RGG.

"Hello!
I'm a giant Dominion fan (well... addict to be honest). I apologize if you've received a bunch of messages like this, but I've found the online implementation (Goko) to be excessively frustrating. I have purchased all of the Dominion sets in physical form (except Dark Ages, as I fear the cards are too complicated for my daughter to play) and would love to play them online - and would pay for what I deem to be an acceptable version of that. However, Goko is just so buggy and unreliable that I haven't purchased the cards there. I'm not alone in that. I contribute to an online community of Dominion fans, and many people (including many who bought the cards on Goko) are extremely dissatisfied.
Many of us are talking about how we might possibly get back a version of online Dominion that we like. The night I first played Dominion (in real life) I really liked it. I went home, searched online, and found the old unofficial implementation (isotropic). It was there that I became hooked - buying the physical sets quickly followed. I understand why it had to go, of course - Goko needed a blank slate to get their foot in the door. Unfortunately it seems that their version is just not up to the task.
So to round to the point, I would like to urge you guys to seek alternative licensing arrangements whenever your contract with Goko allows. In fact, if you're comfortable disclosing some details of your contract (and not legally prohibited from doing so), I would love to get some information from you about it. A few of us have seriously discussed pooling money in an attempt to purchase the license. I'm sure it's a pipedream, but we have a community full of folks who are willing to kick in to a crowdsourced version of purchasing the online license in order to implement something more like isotropic.
Thank you for your time and for the work you've done publishing an awesome game. "

I got a reply to this a few days ago.

"We have discussed the situation with Goko and they have promised to have the problems corrected this week. Many were caused by moving the system to a new server. Thanks for your interest."

Not much of an answer, but there you go. I might reply to the effect of "thanks for the reply, I don't mean to take much more of your time, but I just want to register with you that these were not temporary problems, these are problems that have always plagued Goko and I hope you consider bailing on them when the license is over".

23
there have been a couple kickstarters for it, including at least one non-exclusive license: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1423575262/dominion-storage-case

that hobby lobby case seems to be the heart of a lot of solutions for it.

I don't know if the Guilds card is similar, but the Dark Ages card says to go to www.playdominion.com/dark. On the other side there are instructions about swiping the card and at the bottom there is a circle that says "Hold Here", below that there is a 6 digit number (maybe your card doesn't have one?). I just went to the url, clicked through some stuff, logged in, put in the code and it worked. I did this a while ago, so I don't remember all the details. Try going to playdominion.com/dark instead of "guild" the guild one seems to just redirect straight to the normal Dominion online home screen.

edit: The playdominion.com/dark page has a link which sends you here: http://play.goko.com/Dominion/gameClient.html?boxcard=true. At the bottom left corner of the page there is a little icon that says Redeem.

The Guilds card has www.playdominion.com/guild [sic] which just redirects to the regular gameclient page, without the boxcard true part and thus without the redeem part.
I used your 'dark' link and got to the part where I can type in my 6 digit code. Every time I get "Failed to read card Please try again".

Good job, Goko. Good job.

The good news is that my Cool Stuff Inc order came today and I got Base Cards in it.
The bad news is that my Base Cards promo does not have a 6 digit number. [edit: but it has a different URL, which tells me to use 200001 as the code].
I now have Haven, Hoard, and Nobles. Nothing else though.
...and I just clicked Play Bots to try to test out the cards and Goko wouldn't start a game for me. Well, at least this has been more fun than work :)
Edit: tried again, got an all base bot game, and lost (oh god the shame) and then a base+nobles bot game.

Thanks again for everybody's help with the mystery

You do not need a touchscreen, there is a number at the bottom of the card you can type in to get the cards.

How? So far I haven't been able to even get logged in on my phone with Goko to swipe it, so if there's a place to type my number in on my laptop, I'm there.

Extended online browsing is miserable on a phone. I can't imagine getting through a game before accidentally hitting back and screwing up the whole thing.

This is all kind of an academic exercise for me... I haven't bought any of the cards on Goko (while I swore it off completely at launch, it's been a lot better since*, but I'm still just not convinced it's worth it, I'd rather spend the money getting the last few hard copy sets I don't have [dark ages and alchemy]).
And so while this will get me an actual useful thing... those 5 cards are not enough to inspire me to host a game rather than just use automatch to try to find someone who has an actual set.
Anyway, thanks so much for all the quick answers.

*I know it's still maddening, but it really was fully unusable for me at launch. Maybe it was because I was using a laptop that was a couple years old... but the lag was several seconds per action, and a large number of games I was in froze and I could not continue play.
