Can you please take me off the list? I'm going to be taking a long break from dominion.

Sorry for the inconvenience

The solo challenges are very fun but can be frustrating if you don't have good patience. LOTS of shuffle luck involved.. I played around 200 "games" before I submitted an attempt of a challenge.. came in first so I guess it was worth it

It's very rewarding to come up with a solution that nobody else has and it's fun to see other people's solutions once the challenge is over.

Here's a pretty new challenge that was just posted: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=2757.0

Very fun games and we had some nice discussion afterwards. Not going to talk too much about them just going to give my insight on the games.

Game 1: I look at the board and notice Hoard and the fact that it'll end on 3 piles and nobody can really build a province buying engine. I see Mandarin as a huge opportunity to get an early hoard and to help get the $ I want on certain turns. I buy green early and often and my hoards help me keep the buying power needed to stay ahead.

Game 2: ARRRR! Me and Ninja decide to go for pirate ships here while RJ and O go for witch/margraves. RJ and O conspired against us pirate folk and bought 8 estates in 1 turn to make the game 3 pile before our ships could become useful. I never really had a chance in this game as I only had a 4$ mat and got my 2nd ship at like.. turn 10? Ninja however got a 7$ mat and early ships but they unfortunately collided too often.

Game 3: Boring jack/lighthouse game.. nice relaxation from all the attacking chaos though.

Game 4: Still a little flustered by this game. I got everyone in a nasty KC saboteur pin but couldn't really trash O's saboteur which wrecked havoc upon my money sources. 2nd to last turn I used saboteur 6 times but RJ had all his green in his hand. I got trade route 1 turn too late and O helped RJ take the win.

Game 5: Only way to prevent RJ from winning here was for me to get 1st and for him to get last. I go for an ambassador/caravan/goons/WV engine thing but the game ended very quickly from their tunnel/harvest play. Something funny happened towards the end where there were only 9 coppers left and I was forced to buy a bunch of curses off of a double goons turn. I was trying for the 1% chance to win and for RJ to get last but could have easily just taken 2nd overall by buying the coppers.

Solo Challenges / Re: My third solo challenge: Double Tactician
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:20:23 pm »
Was a pretty fun challenge but shuffle luck was very annoying especially with my strat. I needed to pickup a tactician/university on turns 3/4 and then get tactician in my hand on turn 5 and on turn 6 have a watchtower university and potion + 4 copper in my hand so I can topdeck throneroom/golem. Then I needed golem to find univ/tactician first. I thought the embargo buy didn't really matter but I forgot that golem could find it after I had discarded it from tactician, almost cost me a very lucky try. I kept getting 10 and 11 turns with this and almost decided to just settle for 10 turns.

I'd like to thank my mom, who kept telling me to keep truckin' when I was having trouble.. My brother who got me into this game.. and my fourth grade teacher because she was just a pretty cool girl.

We did it, Ma.. we did it..

Help! / Re: Vineyards, Nobles, Jesters.
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:05:28 pm »
Didn't look at the whole game, just the kingdom and ending decks..

Vineyards is normally a terrible strat unless there are +buy/+gain or another potion card that you want. I'm amazed at how he had 7 villages with only 1 monument.. Since he was trying to stall the game to enhance his vineyards you'd think he would want one of the best cards in a long game.

Your strategy should be to make the game as quick as possible. Buying duchies will only make the game last longer and will give him more targets with his jesters. Vault is a huge card here for you since it guarantees you a province as long as you have a gold or 2 silvers in 6 cards.

Why not use spoilers if you're going to talk about a solo challenge? 10 is not the best, I got much better.. 3 tactician in 10 turns

Okay so, it's definitely me, O, Rising Jaguar, and ninjabus in the semi-finals. 4 posts later, let's organize when we can play.

I'm available to play at almost any time but need some notice since I share a laptop with my gf.

Thought I'd make a thread here to help with scheduling when to play our 4 player games.

It looks like it'll be me, O, Rising Jaguar, and ninjabus(unless BJ Penn goes 7-0 to tie) that advance to the semi-finals.

Post your available times here and I hope we can find a good time to play all 5 games.

This combo seems pretty strong to get an engine deck going faster. Do you have any sample games that show it off?

Dominion Isotropic / How many games to get to top rank
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:15:35 pm »
I was curious to see what level I could get to in one day so I made a new account and tried to play as many games as I had time for. I reached level 22 in 29 games (25-3-1) and now I'm wondering how many games it would take for an undefeated player to reach Obi Won Bonogi's level 51 status. I'm assuming there are a lot more variables to this than I am thinking of but let's just assume that the undefeated player plays 1 game a day against someone as close to his level as possible.

Help! / Different BM + X matchups
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:23:13 pm »
cards in supply: Council Room, Gardens, Laboratory, Market, Militia, Noble Brigand, Nomad Camp, Smithy, Throne Room, and Trader

What's interesting with these cards is that there are many directions you can go. Also, I feel like there are some rock-paper-scissors matchups with this kingdom.

At first glance, this board seems pretty straight forward but something that I've been having trouble with recently is choosing which BM strat works best. I was 2nd player in this game and thought smithy BM with a few well-timed noble brigands would beat everything else. After seeing my opponent pick up a militia, I got a little scared and followed him. I later picked up 2 golds and after that just bought labs with 5-7. I thought that come late game, the labs would help me out more than the golds. The game didn't really last as long as I thought it would and I ended up winning from my low-level opponent's mistakes (buying gold with 6-7 instead of duchy late game).

Basically what I'm seeking from this post is a breakdown of the different strats on this board and how they fare against each other. These cards can create some good rules of thumbs for me in the future when picking out which BM strat is best.

Is militia worth it as a first buy? As 2nd player is there something that could help beat the militia player?
Is trader a good first buy when playing Smithy BM or is it just unnecessary?
Is trader/gardens (market can help too) fast enough against a smithy player? With labs/TR I think a smithy player can easily go through all 8 provinces pretty quickly
I'm assuming if both players are playing Smithy BM it isn't worth it to get labs or TRs because the game won't last long enough.

I'm sure you will! There are many friendly players on this forum and if you're looking for help to improve your play, there are plenty of high level players too.

Do you play on isotropic or just live?

Dominion Isotropic / rankings messed up?
« on: May 10, 2012, 12:31:22 am »
Yesterday I played very well and had about a 10-2 record all against players ranging from 20-40.. I looked at the leaderboard this morning (while isotropic was down I think) and saw I jumped to level 36 from level 34.

Now, after isotropic came back up it shows me back to level 34 with +1 next to it. Were all of yesterday's game logs discarded from the leaderboard's rankings?

Coheed 5 - tlloyd 2

Had a fun series against tlloyd even though he disagreed with some of my decisions. I think I have the logs mixed up but I'll just post them in the order I have them anyway.

Game 1: Coheed 45 tlloyd 35 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-210459-f540e23a.html

Game 2: Coheed 37 tlloyd 24 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-211025-74eb69df.html

Game 4: Coheed 31 tlloyd 37 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-212818-7582af57.html

Game 5: Coheed 28 tlloyd 21 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-213404-741cd6f4.html

Game 6: Coheed 20 tlloyd 14 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-213840-4b91834a.html

Game 7: Coheed 36 tlloyd 24 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201205/08/game-20120508-214433-4aa59b67.html

Analysis:

1: We both open FV/JoAT but on the first shuffle he gets a trading post/spice merchant/gold with 5/4/6 while I get a 2nd JoAT/spice merchant/gold with 4/4/6. He gets the first province but then gets a couple unlucky draws (3/4/5) right after. He didn't get much use out of his trading post and my silvers helped me green faster than he could. I feel trading post was a little too slow as he got only 2 plays out of it and my JoATs helped cycle a little while loading my deck with silver.

2: We both choose to go spice merchant/FG and then into cities. We get an even split on the FG but I was able to win the city split from him unluckily getting 9/3 on turns 7 and 8. The extra cities let me easily connect the FG together and green faster.

3: I try a tricky engine using BV/wharf/embassy/tunnel and find that loading my deck with tunnels and golds really hurt my chances of chaining wharves. He went straight up jack BM and took the win.

4: I mistakenly thought spice merchant/FG could beat familiar and took 10 curses to the face with nothing on the board to trash them. The game was pretty close but I was unable to pick up the last province for the win because of my thick deck. Pretty funny play on turn 14 where he buys a province and I trash 4 FG and draw all 4 golds with my library.

5: IGG rush with FG, nomad camp and a bunch of strong 5's that we completely ignored. We both open 5/2 and I chose to go IGG/FG while he went IGG/nothing. My thought on this was that even though it would be incredibly hard to connect my FG's, I could end up trashing them for gold later. Even though I never got the chance to trash them, they proved useful and I luckily connected them a couple times. I was able to get an early 7/2 IGG lead because he had very unlucky turns after the 2nd reshuffle(4/8/3/4/4/4/8/4/3/3) and from then on I greened faster and ended the game on a 3 pile.

6: We both went for an ironworks/silk roads rush. I think oasis isn't that good here and silver is a better pickup but I chose to follow him with the oasis' anyway. Even though we split the SR's, I was able to get more estates than he could.

7: To me, this game was the most interesting of all.. I looked at the board for a while before making my first purchases. I open 5/2 while he opens 4/3 on a JoAT board. I couldn't beat him with jack on my opening so I tried to think of a strategy that could beat it. I like Pirate ship a lot and feel it is an underrated card in 2 player.. I felt that my ships would be able to easily hit every time since he is loading his deck with silvers. This board also has some good enablers for ships (stables/crossroads) because they can run through the deck easily to find the ships every turn. At the end of this game, tlloyd stated that Jack should beat my strategy every game but I have to disagree. The only luck I saw happen in this game was me getting 5 coppers on turn 11 after my reshuffle and with those out of the way, I was able to get a province every turn.

Sorry that a lot of these games came down to luck, tlloyd.. and for overtaking your #1 spot by only 1 point because of it. I'm cheering you on, Jorbles!

Just making sure I understand this right..

let's say Bob gained all curses on turn 20 and trashed them all on turn 21 but Alice gained all curses on turn 10 and trashed them all on turn 20.

Will Alice beat Bob in both categories? or does Bob win the second one because he trashed all curses in 1 turn after gaining them?

(qwert draws: a Bazaar, a Worker's Village, 2 Coppers, and an Estate.)

Why pass an estate when you just bought one the last turn?..

He obviously understands the game is ending and all points are valuable so why give up 2 of them on YOUR turn? If he forgot point count and is afraid a copper will give you enough for the winning province then why not just give the WV?

Game Reports / Re: Most bizarre ending conditions
« on: April 28, 2012, 03:00:11 pm »
Just had a crazy game vs Lekkit with lots of cursing and trashing. Then we both dove into victory early with very poor economies and if either of us wasted a turn to buy a gold/silver then the lead would have been lost. Point tracker was off and I kept good track of the score the entire time but I think Lekkit might have been off a few points as he made a few mistakes later in the game.

Towards the end, there was 1 province left with him having pretty much no way to get it and I was always down by over 6. We kept trading duchies and estates and eventually I got his lead down to only 3.

Last turn I'm down by 3 points, there are 2 estates 2 duchies 7 fairgrounds and 1 province left (2 piles are already at 0). I have only 2 golds and 1 silver in my deck for money (he had even less money). 2 golds in my hand and I made an insane risk to draw my silver by ambassadoring my estate away in order to get 2 extra cards drawn from my watchtower. I end up drawing it and bought the last province for a 1 point win. I probably had to do this in order to win since the game's end was coming closer and closer and I had no way to get ahead other than this.

Thought maybe we should extend this thread to not only ending conditions but also tricks used to end a game. This is probably the biggest and closest win in all of my dominion games played and I think the only time I used ambassador this way.

Edit: Oh, here's the game http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/28/game-20120428-114158-70fd6e6f.html

I used to play an RTS game at a high level (warcraft 3) and had a training partner that always had this mentality.. In a game with hardly any luck (pretty much only luck is miss % and crit % which doesn't play a big role), he ALWAYS complained he was unlucky at end of game and that was the only reason he lost. He was a pretty good friend of mine so I always just shook it off and tried to snap him out of the mentality but nothing ever worked. I ended up improving a lot more than he did and went on to bigger and better teams/partners.

I don't understand what makes people think that EVERY SINGLE GAME they lose is because of luck. Do they really think they're so perfect that they never makes a mistake? Not even once?

Hello, Lekkit! I played a nice game with you a couple days ago and was glad that finally someone was wanting to have a conversation about it afterwards. When I play on isotropic, I always feel like I'm just playing with a brick wall that can only say gl or gg.

If anyone wants to have a chatty game and you see me online please challenge me! :)
