Game Reports / Was this "too smooth"?
« on: December 05, 2012, 11:56:17 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/05/game-20121205-054728-66b1dfa3.html
We talked about this after the game. Lespuetere thought it went too smooth, I replied that generally when I make a plan and it works the way I want it to I tend to assume it's the plan and not blame shuffle luck.
(Other than misclicking to trash fg instead of gold on turn 13)
I thought the worst that could go wrong was getting one turn of 2 estates 2 islands copper, which is also not bad. Put away estate island.

Nothing here is great for primary draw. But if you want crossroads for the actions and are planning on supplementing with harem estates in the deck are better than spamming yourself with silver imo.

I think the jack was a mistake. Moneylender crossroads was a good opening, because it reduces copper and lets your crossroads hit estate. You DON'T  want to trash the estates, that's your draw card. With a small deck, I'd have bought wishing well instead of menage turn 3. Early on, copper is pretty likely, midgame estate is pretty likely and endgame wtf. You generally have a surplus of actions so buy 2 crossroads, two bridges and go for harems. You should have totally ignored silver in my opinion. And you got lucky with menage but I don't think it was a good turn 3 buy, when you were still fairly likely to draw either two copper or two estates.
Compare that game with this, when I had only loan for trashing copper instead of moneylender

I have no problem with rules, if they were upfront. If there was somewhere that said cursing is not acceptable on the forum I wouldn't have posted that. As far as I know there's nothing like that.

What's the problem?  It's not like you were warned or banned.  I just edited the post title in a way that didn't alter the meaning of your post, and didn't mention it to anyone, not even you.
Sorry Theory. It really isn't a problem. I just want to know if this is policy, and if so, I would like there to be some kind of sticky that says so.

Pretty sure this one is explicit, actually.
I get that. And it's not like having a word deleted particularly bothers me. I just like having a set of rules defined. Is this policy? Then say so.

Interesting that you both think I should have ignored amb. You think that I could have got enough dukes/duchies fast enough that his clean deck wouldn't get 8 provs first?

I won somehow but I wasn't sure what to do for most of it. I got spammed back with 2 ambs and crap after I bought possession and threw away mine, then he had the good luck (or I had the bad) to possess me on amb turns. I was hoping to expand away the ambs but never got the chance. I thought his buy of salvager was stupid but couldn't possess any of his good turns. No amb with green or salv with green. I did get a possession and a sab off him but didn't really need it or want it. Just denial. I went for duke duchy even though it was longer because I was sure of getting 5s. Did I play this right?

Game Reports / Lost the amb war but won with 10 curses.

I figured that between scrying pool, golem and crossroads green wasn't that bad for me. So as long as I minimally returned copper I should be good. I didn't get a second amb, and kept most of the estates he gave me as well as buying some harems. By turn 15 I was up 30 to nothing and he had a very clean deck and started spamming curses. My last turn golem crapped out on me. I needed one action and it only hit crossroads. Which gave me pretty good draw but left me unable to play my second horse traders or either monument. I had 16potion and ended it conservatively on piles. What I want to know is how likely is it that he would have won had I bought 2 provs instead of harem curse? scrying pool pile was out, there was one curse, one harem and 2 crossroads so piling out the next turn or the turn after would still have been likely.

And any comments? We both played a develop game. I think his fairly late mandarin was a mistake, he should have bought duchy to develop.

Help! / Re: Bishop loses to Grand Market. Did I just get unlucky?
« on: December 01, 2012, 11:08:22 pm »
You lost because he had a much better deck. There are two reasons to bishop, either for points or to get rid of crap.Trying to win on straight bishop points and ignoring the other cards made no sense here. He could have cleaned up the gms, gone back and bought some golds and bishoped them for 3 to catch up, ignoring the provs. For getting rid of crap it wasn't so bad, if you hadn't built your strategy around it. You could have either bought ironworks turn 3, then picked up hamlets, nvs and silver while bishoping, or buy exclusively silver gold (no actions) while bishoping and compete for gm. You had almost no economy. Look at the difference in coins you produced turns 7, 8 and 10.

Help! / Re: Vineyards vs Goons
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:47:58 am »
His turn 8 seems ridiculous. So does going for woodcutter herbalist over pawn as +buy. With shanty town festival, pawn would give much better options. Even tournament would. It looks like he kept getting stuck with 2 shanty town two action card turns. Piling out was an obvious risk he totally ignored. I think with goons on board, starting with it is the obvious play. And in a mirror match it more or  less automatically becomes a goons game. But had you mirrored his vineyard rush, you'd both have only half as many actions and a fast pile-out and it would be much more luck based, who drew potion first or who started greening when the piles started running low.

agree with all this, except i think herbalist is better than pawn in a vineyard deck in the abstract (putting the potion back really helps). but goons + tournament ---> it can't really be a vineyard deck.
I certainly agree with that. 1 or 2 herbalists would be good in a vineyard deck. If this was a vineyard deck. My point was he should have tried for 8 pawns 2 herbalists instead of the other way around. Besides, with 7 potions putting one back would probably give him a 5 potion hand. :o

Ill-Gotten Gains: Blutzoll.
I like the term IGG so much. "Blutzoll" has a completly different meaning, the one you already pointed out. But to be honest, I have no idea how to translate it better. As far as i know, a term like ill-gotten gains does not exist in German.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Buying Copper w/ Apothecary?
« on: November 22, 2012, 08:35:52 am »
I've overbought coppers sometimes. To the point where I got stuck with 5 copper turns again. But as a general rule of thumb, if you're going straight apoth prov, you want at least 8, not 7. In a colony game, 9 for plat. If you have a sifter, a good trasher or a good draw and +buy you might want more. If you're stuck trashing a copper for the +buy, (trade route/spice merchant) you'll probably want to refill. And if there are no trashers and your deck is full of crap, buying coppers might be your best chance of getting a decent hand.
Here's a decent apoth game I just played. Easy early estate trashing, stables for draw and village ht let me discard coppers and redraw them. I ended up with 9 coppers. Notice how I didn't buy them too early. I got one double colony and one double colony-duchy turn.

Help! / How should I have played this?
« on: November 21, 2012, 06:31:10 pm »
I ended up winning but it was pure luck on hitting kc yw twice when his missed and then hitting one megaturn before he did.
Weird set of cards and crappy shuffle luck most of the game. (for both of us)

Correct analysis... but then why didn't you follow up on it? You actually *did* give him a free silver on your turn 4, where he was critically low on money.
Thought of it a turn too late.

It would have been fun to see you switch into a pirate ship strategy right there, and explain to him why lookout/lookout is bad on a whole different level then a post ever could.
This is the +1 Wish I'd thought of that.

but while my comment was targeted specifically at the pure governor remodel strategy, i do still say the card is overrated. i think that the power level of the card is skewed heavily by the fact that it is a card that both players will use, therefore giving each other the benefits.
That's not quite true. One side being heavily silver spammed when the other has a deck that's more or less golds or nothing is a huge difference. Look at this game (which I also don't feel I played optimally) where he ended up with 10 silvers 1 gold to my 1 silver 5 golds. And we split the govs evenly.

Is Lookout/Lookout ever a good idea?
Very possibly he thought he'd get silver from my gov.
