Dominion: Guilds Previews / Guilds Box Cover Art
« on: June 14, 2013, 07:51:01 pm »
Maybe someone has speculated on this before, but the Guilds box art is seriously weird from a "selling this game" perspective.  As in like, what could possibly sell a game better than a picture of a guy apparently making a deal with another guy, while a third guy tries halfheartedly to cut in with a sort of "whaa?" look on his face.

Given the fact that this is the last expansion, do you think its custom portraiture such as the Knights cards?  Is it Donald making a deal with Jay?  I have to say, if that's the case, the artist was not interested in flattery.

Now if it is an artistic rendition of the fateful handshake long ago between Donald and Jay- who's the other guy?

My personal guess- CEO of Goko.  He's like all "Mr. Tummelson, I'd like to construct an online implementation of the fine game you just purchased.  As you can see, I am well qualified for this task; I have both a hatchet AND a big-ass saw."

Does anyone know- is there a real story behind the art?

Introductions / The Life and Times of Bill The Cat; or, Hi
« on: November 16, 2012, 05:58:29 pm »
Hello, I am Bill The Cat!  I have never played on isotropic (I know, I have missed out on both the Golden and Silver ages of online Dominion) so if there’s a Bill The Cat there, I’m not that one.

I’ve had a long-time commitment to regular, silent lurking on this site.  I enjoy all the strategy articles, which have really improved my real-life games, which until very recently, have been the only Dominon games I play (other than Androminion on my wife’s phone, just to make sure it was not going to function as a secret sensei for her to get better than me).   I really like the overall tone of the posts on this site, as there seems to be a sort of prickly Jeffersonian civility and camaraderie that permeates the dialog.   Anyway, I’ve never had any impetus to post until recently, because I don’t have anything to add regarding the strategy of this great game, considering most of you appear to be real life math wizards, wandering winders, computer programmers, etc.  I’m here to learn from you.

However, I have really been thinking about the whole Goko implementation over the past few days, ever since I gave it another shot after its initial launch-a-mageddon in August.  I think I happened to try it again just as it had some kind of poisonous interaction with a Chrome update, which did not help me love it.  Overall, I really want it to work, because as a casual player that does not relish being ranted at by some random dude who does not like my unfortunate tendency toward AP / slow play, I would like to simply have an outlet to play decent bots or real-life friends.  Anyhow, I’d like to write a piece or two regarding the aesthetics of the Goko Dominion-beast and wanted to introduce myself before I post, because I guess I have a sense that its strange to just start talking before introducing yourself.  Do the Goko-lords read this site?  I hope they do, because they need to realize their aesthetic sucks and that it will not be that hard to fix it, and that it’s a dang crime if they don’t!  I mean, who do they think their market is?  But I digress!

Amazingly, I am 40 years old.

I’m totally married, and have a rad family (rad wife, rad 19 year-old, rad 14 year-old, rad 9 year-old).  As children are like terminal actions, we spread them out over a 10 year span and they hardly ever collide.  I live in California.  I’m the estimating manager for a medium sized landscape construction outfit.  I have a BA in English from Cal Poly, for some reason.  I am a Christian, and have relentlessly converted all of my church friends to Dominion.  Seriously, thank you Donald X. for not naming cards stuff like “Defiling Death Wand of 100 Demons” so I don’t have to try to explain it to my more reactionary co-religionists.  Apprentice is a medieval scientist, with an unfortunately anthropomorphic non-supernatural bonfire behind him.  Familiar is just a guy with a cat.

My family and friends have been into board games since, well, the beginning.  I played old-school Battletech in junior high, graduated to Star Fleet Battles and Avalon Hill fare in high school and college (including ASL- whoo!) and then de-graduated into games that my wife would play with me after that (Catan, Stone Age, El Grande, Agricola, Empire Builder, 7 Wonders, etc.; and now Kingdom Builder, which my wife is some sort of evil savant at).  We’ve been playing Dominion since the middle of last year and it really is kind of in a class by itself; we play other stuff one time a week and 10++ Dominion games.  Just to go on record, I will commit to buy any and all Dominion products that Donald X. puts out for the rest of his natural life, so go ahead and make non-canonical battle-chests or whatever because I will buy them.

And that’s about it.  Thanks again for all the help you guys have given me strategy-wise over the past year to help me stay slightly ahead of my wife, who is starting to have zero patience for my 10-minute sermons on how the shuffle luck screwed me, so it’s a good thing I can win occasionally.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Adventure mode in desperate need of rehaul
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:40:48 pm »
After waiting a long time after the initial launch disaster, I gave Goko Dominion another shot.  In adventure mode, it crashed like clockwork every other game, from Chrome on a solid desktop.  The last game before I rubbed my eyes and exited the study dealt me an initial hand with all the treasure values blank.

Dominion is one of the best games ever made.  However, what is going to happen when people that have not been pre-addicted try this game out?  They are going to give it a shot, realize its designed to some kind of high school level and is basically unplayable, and that's that.  Customer is gone.  Player base is gone.  And if the casuals walk, who will Goko ever get?  I get a sense that all you pros aren't exactly impressed either.

I know its technically a beta.  But how long does it take to work the bugs out of a product that was deemed ready for launch in August by a conference room of real live business people?  Come on, what on earth has happened?  Why does the game design (music, avatars; hot damn, the avatars) feel so insanely amateurish and third-world-subcontracted?  This is just so dang sad considering the excellence of the game.

I'm sorry, I guess that's a rant.  But you try to play on Goko and journal your feelings.  It's just wrong.

Could Adventurer be "fixed" by simply making its cost 5?
It'd probably be one of the worst 5's, but it wouldn't be the worst 5.

It seems like a cost of 5 would make it pretty comparable to Harvest, i.e. a terminal gold in many decks.  And yeah, Harvest is no hot sauce at 5 either.

I cannot believe that a discussion about Adventurer has drawn me out of my long-time commitment to silent lurking.  Well, hello.  I have spent 1 day 22 hours on this forum, with the sole purpose of staying ahead of my wife in our 10 RL games a week Dominion... uh, habit?  I do not think she knows about this site.  That makes me neutral evil, I think.
