Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Where to play Dominion now?

Are people still using dominion.games, or have people transitioned to the new app? Am just wondering where the bigger online player base is!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Allies' split piles & Ally
« on: January 04, 2024, 03:46:02 pm »
Definitely sounds like you're not "rotating" the split piles. https://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Rotate
Oh we rotate. But one player only uses Big Money strategy and never rotates if they even buy the first card. Me and the other two use the strategy best suited for that game. Maybe we just need more time with Allies.

You only need to play the top card three times between you (assuming you choose to rotate) for the bottom card to become available, so I would be surprised if it wasn't coming up for purchase reasonably often. Most games I play with Allies involve strategising to some degree over when to trigger the rotations to prevent the opponent picking up the "good" card(s).

It’s just a game - so I’ve got no problem if people undo whether they make a mistake, misclick, change of heart, whatever.

If people want to “cheat” to improve their win percentage in that way then I don’t see why they really bother playing the game in the first place, but hey, it’s just a game (those people are rare IME).

Equally people who steadfastly refuse all undos even for an obvious misclick - good luck to them, but you know, it’s just a game.

As I see it, we’re here to have fun, and some people take it too seriously.

Rules Questions / Re: Taskmaster post-gain
« on: April 09, 2023, 05:57:35 pm »
This answer is actually in the rulebook (which is on the RGG website): "Taskmaster does not count cards gained before playing it."
But in any case, this is supported by the straight reading of the card. Cards like Livery, Galleria and Guildmaster don't give you anything for cards gained earlier in the turn.

Well, sure, but the confusion here is more about timing of effects. After all, I don't think it is intuitive that if gaining a $5 causes you to play Taskmaster (like with Haggler and Rush), then it will count.

Similarly with Livery, I think it is not intuitive that if you gain a Livery and play it with Innovation, you do get a Horse from Livery's effect.

Another nuance to watch out for (which cost me a game just now as I didn't think about it), is if you have Taskmaster(s) in play from a previous turn and you have a start-of-turn gainer (e.g. Importer), you have to "trigger" Taskmaster's replay effect before you gain the card (if that's the card you are using as your 5-cost gain for that turn). If you are playing IRL I daresay you'd never actually do anything different, you'd just gain the card and then at end-of-turn note you'd gained the card and keep Taskmaster in play, but online if you don't select to apply the Taskmaster effect first, then they'll all get discarded at end-of-turn (even though it makes absolutely no difference in practical terms as those card effects all happen prior to anything else occurring on your turn).

#119390267 - Lord R refuses to play Scepter as well.

Had King’s Cache, Collection and Harbinger crop up together last night. One of those combos that is not only devastatingly effective, but with the Harbinger, fairly easy to set up the trigger and becomes self-fulfilling.

This is a significant buff that might make them too strong. Also bottleneck issues. Kingdom with no thrashers, Alice gains the two Goats, game over.

That’s why you’d certainly separate the piles if you’re doing it that way. Agree that the random chance element will have been factored into the card design, it’s something that people like more or less I suppose. I mean, if you’re playing Dominion in the first place you’ve bought in to the concept that there is significant luck involved, but I can see for some people that there comes a line where luck has the potential to overtake skill.

I’m not really sure that 15 unique cards were really needed with the Loot concept, seems to me that it would have been just as interesting with fewer (and then you might have printing room for more copies). I don’t play very often with more than 2P but if Prize Goat is your only trashing option then I could well believe a lot of 3P games end up with a huge imbalance.

Having now played several games involving loot, my take is loot is just like Black Market. It's luck of the draw. If you get the better ones, it is to your advantage. If you get the lesser ones, it is to your disadvantage. Totally random. Not my favorite way to determine the outcome of a game. I have gotten spanked in games where we both had loots, but my opponent had the better ones.
It takes away strategy and turns a game into luck of the draw.
Indeed. An early Chalice or Goat is often game deciding. One or two Loots in a row without an extra Buy can be an auto-loss.

The Loot gainers are well done and interesting, Loot itself is not.

Playing IRL 2-player you can house-rule workaround this pretty easily. Split the Loots into 2 identical sets of 15, and as and when you gain a Loot, you choose (like Prizes with Tournament) which to gain. Makes for some quite interesting decisions as the relative value of some of the Loots varies considerably depending on what else is in the Kingdom.

What really weirds me out is the choice of descriptions for Trait cards. Particularly that the name of the card is always used to refer to the pile (instead of something "this pile"). This in particular leads to a confusing card text for Cheap.

It’s already messed me up a couple of posts ago when I went to say “a cheap card” and then realized that that now has a specific rules meaning in Dominion, so I had to change it to “a low-cost card”.

Applying usual conventions of capitalising defined terms, this should be fine.

I'm surprised that Cheap exists: If most kingdom cards are designed to be as cheap as possible without breaking things, making a card still cheaper unconditionally should be problematic. Especially when it turns a strong $5 card like Witch into a $4... ???

Seems a bit like Chapel... a card far too good for its cost that breaks the normal rules of things. It may be broken if it were automatically in every game, but instead it just means that games that have it play out differently than normal games of Dominion.

But for every situation like that, there’s another mediocre card which at $1 cheaper suddenly becomes an entirely different proposition. These Traits are great - just like Landmarks, they force experienced players to analyse cards / types / the game in a new way.

I just had this bug (#46413042) so clearly still there...

I just had a game where the Kingdom included Upgrade, Fortress and Royal Carriage.

To make matters even more amusing, Donate was available - so having bought a Silver, 2 Golds, Fortress and two Upgrades I could Donate - trash everything else (yes, I suppose I could have trashed the $ too, an error on my part!) and used the Double Upgrade-Fortress combo to pile the Upgrades and then pick up as many Royal Carriages as my opponent didn’t buy, queuing them all on the Tavern mat as they came up. The following turn, I had enough plays of Upgrade on Fortress to pile the Duchies, buy a Province for good measure and win 30-0 in 12 turns. Completely mad - I suspect the other player didn’t see what was going to happen until the turn when the piles started to empty.

Upgrade + Fortress: one worth knowing about!

Hmm. Goatherd: "+1 Card per card the player to your right trashed on their last turn"

What if they trash the same card twice? What if you can't tell?

There are quite a few cards that require close tracking in this set - Invest is one I didn’t expect, now you have to have two separate pools of Exiled cards and keep track of them. In general it does feel more and more like the game is being written for online play (which I don’t mind at all!).

Artwork quibble: very few cardinals would have had a full beard in mediaeval times. Not many do, even now. It's not actually disallowed, it's just that they want to avoid looking Orthodox/Coptic.

Not true: 23 popes in a row from 1523-1700 had beards and a majority overall have done. It was only actually against canon law for a brief period in the 20th century.

I realise Dominion is probably set *slightly* prior to 1523, but plenty before that had them.

Given that a cardinal is a bird and that the expansion is about animals, did you intend this card to depict a bird but the artitst went his/her own way?
Thank you
Given the fact that religious cards are always trashing based, and Exile is similar to trashing, this is unlikely. Plus, Cardinal doesn't really sound like an attack.

There are numerous ecclesiastical cards in the game already, and all of them involve trashing - so Cardinal (in that sense) fits the bill. Great image as well, especially the cardinal’s hat.

If you choose not to play the Action/Treasure that Gamble reveals, it just returns to the top of the deck, right?

No, the “otherwise, discard it” means “discard it if you didn’t play it” regardless of what the card type is.

Here is an infinite loop:

+1 Card on King's Court
+1 Buy on Lurker
a Watchtower in hand
a King's Court, a Lurker and a Mandarin in Trash
2 Platinums in play

buy Gamble to play King's Court (Draw a Lurker via +1 Card token)
play this Lurker three times, gain Lurker (top), King's Court (top), Mandarin (trash)
gaining Mandarin topdecks 2 Platinums
buy Gamble twice to play them
buy Bonfire to trash a King's Court and a Lurker

Here we gain 10$ and 3 Buys by spending 9$ and 1 Buy. The board is now identical to the begging. That is an infinite loop.

Nice loop.

That being said, infinite loops already exist without this card. It's not even worth paying attention to the existence of a loop if it requires more than 5 specific cards (it's almost never going to come up). This requires at least 6 specific cards (don't forget the bonus tokens requires peasant). It's possible, but this is not something that going to come up realistically in gamble games.

I made the chances of getting the exact five cards required in any given kingdom as just over one in five trillion. Plus you’ve got the two events, I suppose, but my statistics A-Level was too long ago...

After you’ve bought the Bonfire, how do you restart the loop?

Well, you buy Gamble and so on

Yes, I see, having played the Platina mid-loop. Neat - and only requires KC, Lurker, Watchtower, Mandarin, a card that gives tokens, Colony/Platinum and two events!

Bonus Preview 5: Gamble

Here's another Event. They travel in pairs.

Sometimes, it's really a gamble. Sometimes you know what card is next. Sometimes you even just bought it.

another card contributing to infinite loops, huh

awesome

How would it make for an infinite loop?  You're either playing the card or discarding it, either way, the top card is different the next time you play it

yeah, but a lot of infinite loops on this site that i have seen used topdeciing and then drawing and playing all the same cards and now it is easier

I can see you could get a loop of quite a few iterations but you won’t get an infinite loop here - you need to keep generating +2 to keep buying Gamble, and you need to keep gaining something, otherwise your deck eventually runs out. Even for cards that give you both of those things, there are only a finite number of them in the supply.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Wayfarer/Swindler
« on: March 10, 2020, 02:28:03 pm »
Swindler would interact really weirdly with Wayfarer's cost, especially in multiplayer.  Since its cost is defined by the most recently-gained card, you could have a situation where, for example, player A plays Swindler.  Player B trashes a copper and receives a curse.  Player C trashes a Wayfarer.  Since the most recently-gained card is the curse that B received, then C would also receive a curse

The Locusts hex would have a similar interaction, except it would amount to "an Action card costing less than whatever the previous person's gained card cost"

But in some situations, Locusts could actually cause you to get an expensive card.  For example, say that I'd just bought a Province, and then I play Vampire, with Locusts being the hex.  The person to my left trashes Wayfarer.  Now they must get an Action card costing less than $8.  Maybe King's Court is in the kingdom, so they're able to get a King's Court!  But then also, if multiple people's trashed card is a Locust, then each one's card they gain instead will be cheaper than the previous person ... so if the first person got a $7 card, then the next person must get an action card costing no more than $6 and so on

I suppose it also leaves you open to the classic Swindler/Peddler when it hits a Province, in a 3-player game.

I for one would be glad for an expansion of just landscapes. I certainly think there is potential for more Landmarks - you can make ordinarily unplayable cards a must-buy with one of those in the right circumstances.

I would also like to get even more Landmarks, but I think that an expansion of just landscapes (and other horizontal cards) would be a bad move businesswise. I may be wrong, but I suspect that a non-negligible part of potential buyers would think that they will could manage with just their own printouts for those cards, which probably isn't a big thing with cards that are in your deck.

It'd also be the first expansion that wasn't playable with just itself + a pack of base cards, and an unsound business decision in that respect.

I suppose a man can dream...it could be a way to go back to small expansions though, to pad them with extra horizontals.

Rules Questions / Re: Militia rule change
« on: March 10, 2020, 02:10:18 pm »
One-at-a-time doesn't sound great to me because now the online version has to say what you discarded, and in real life, everyone can demand to see your discards, which takes more time and is only fair given the rules.  Might as well skip the middleman and make all discard piles completely public at this point.

It's somewhat of a downer that online you don't get to pick the top card like in real life, but the interface hassle would be annoying.  Maybe a toggled option to give the prompt each time would work, but it's a little heavy for something most people won't use.  Like, I can lose fine either way, I don't see it making the difference for me.

Doesn’t the online implementation select the discard / topdeck order according to the order in which you selected the cards?

The most common times this will bought will probably be when you are able to get the last province...if you're getting provinces as your main point source, the person who empties the last province(s) can now get 10 points for 10 coins instead of 6 points for 8 coins, since you don't mind the stop cards as much if you're trying to maximize points on your last 1-2 turns of the game. This will change the endgame math a bit. With 6 stop cards at once, I can't see you wanting to get this earlier over just Provinces unless you're playing something like a money deck with Palace, Gardens, etc.

This changes the “Penultimate Province Rule” equation considerably, since now your opponent could get up to 10pts even if there is no +Buy.

Things like this are why I absolutely love events and other “landscape” cards - rather than just adding one new aspect to the game, they completely change the balance of some or all other components in the game, providing massive strategic variety. I for one would be glad for an expansion of just landscapes. I certainly think there is potential for more Landmarks - you can make ordinarily unplayable cards a must-buy with one of those in the right circumstances.
