Lots of good advice already in this thread. The only thing I have to add is....

This just might not be your thing.

Feel free to say Platina or whatever; you may well manage to successfully communicate that way.

Successfully communicate - that is exactly the whole point of language. As long as the recipients interpret your communication correctly then you have done it right. Sure you need a bunch of rules around grammar etc for formal communication, but there is no point in raging at someone for using an apostrophe in the wrong place on an internet message board.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ill-Gotten Gains - bad for the game?
« on: January 05, 2012, 03:10:19 pm »
Games where Ill-Gotten Gains is the dominant strategy are uninteresting and not fun.

I would say that any game with one dominant strategy is no fun. A mirror match where shuffle luck decide the game. Fortunately Dominion games are usually short enough for it not to matter.

The empty pile mechanic on City is interesting. I'd like to see more cards in that vein. Donald X. said Young Witch was originally going to "grow up" when a pile emptied.  I think an attack that scales like City could be interesting (or terrible).

How about an attack that scales down? It starts out as an awesome attack but diminishes as cards deplete or tokens are gained - like an anti pirate ship.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Internet Explorer - repeated disconnects
« on: October 31, 2011, 02:35:51 pm »
Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm using IE9, and the problem happens every time (so exiting an re-loading does not work).

Considering this seems to be a rare issue, I'm guessing it's something speciically related to my PC and not IE (a firewall issue or something).

Oh well, I'll just have to use Firefox!

Dominion Isotropic / Internet Explorer - repeated disconnects
« on: October 30, 2011, 08:00:48 pm »
This is not an issue with the Isotropic server specifically, but this is hopefully the best board for it.

When I play on Isotropic with Internet Explorer I frequently get "You've reconnected fron another browser window"

This happens so often that I can't finish a game without running out of disconnects. This problem does not happen whatsoever on Firefox.

I know I could keep using Firefox all the time but sometimes I forget! Has anyone else had this issue?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The Decline of My Dominion Skills

I think boredom plays a part. I'm not talking boredom with the game, but with certain cards/combo's.

"Oh, do I really want to play Ambassador tennis? No I'll try something else". You play sub-optimal just to try it out.

Like others have said, fun is the main thing. Don't get hung up on win rates.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: forcing a tie?
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:59:39 pm »
You're behind on provinces, duchies are just about done.  You finally struggle to get back up to $8 and if you buy the last province you know you will tie, but you don't think you can last or you're pretty sure your opponent's next turn is going to be a doozy.

This answers itself for me: If you are fairly certain your opponent will win next turn there is no 'shame' in accepting a draw.

Perhaps if you are playing face to face or don't care about ranking you could say "I could buy the last province for a draw this turn, but I'm going to risk not buying it to make it more interesting".

It's only a game after all *runs for cover*

So out of the following, which one card would you like to see as a full kingdom set (not a prize, just available for buy):

Bag of Gold
+1 Action
Gain a Gold, putting it on top of your deck.

Diadem
Worth $2.
When you play this, +$1 per unused Action you have (Action, not Action card).

Followers
+2 Cards
Gain an Estate. Each other player gains a Curse and discards down to 3 cards in hand.

Princess
+1 Buy
While this is in play, cards cost $2 less, but not less than $0.

Trusty Steed
Choose two: +2 Cards; or +2 Actions; or +$2; or gain 4 Silvers and put your deck into your discard pile.

For me I think Diadem would be the most interesting, because it can create a decision whether to play more action cards or take the money.

Princess and Trusty Steed would be a little powerful, but I'm sure there are some good opinions out there.

Tie her to a chair, shine a light in her eyes and explain it very forcefully to her.

Or do it the other ways suggested, if you want to be boring..

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What's your dominion pet peeve?
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:25:25 pm »
My pet peeve is when one player (usually me) falls behind because of a bad shuffle or attack timing early in the game but has no way to recover. It's no fun playing out turns 7-15 if the conclusion is preordained.

For 2 player games: If you genuinely feel that you have nothing to learn from playing on (even when you are going to lose it is an opportunity to experiment) then simply congratulate your opponent on playing better and resign. Even if it's clearly because of shuffle luck, you can still retire gracefully and acknowledge the defeat.

For 3/4 player games it's a different story because it dramatically changes the game dynamic.

Of course, the next reply will be "my pet peeve is people who resign".

Dominion General Discussion / Re: "Duchy" does not have a 't' in it.
« on: August 29, 2011, 01:31:13 am »
"Dutchy", if it is a word at all, would mean something like "similar to something from the Netherlands".
I guess the desire to sing "Pass the dutchy 'pon the left hand side" during practically every game doesn't happen to people who weren't around in Britain in the early eighties. Yeah, so "Musical Youth" spelled it "Dutchie". They also claimed it was a cooking implement, and they lied:

Similar to something from the Netherlands. Indeed.

I'm glad someone else brought this up. Perhaps themed card list is appropriate?

Other Games / Re: 7 Wonders??
« on: August 21, 2011, 07:25:40 pm »
I played 2 games of this at the weekend, my first time playing. The rules and mechanics are very simple, however I do not understand why it is compared to Dominion.

You don't build a deck, you don't shuffle, you don't have attacks and defences (there is combat, but it's initiated automatically at the end of each phase instead of by players actions).

It's more like a cross between Citadels and Settlers of Catan (it has been compared with Race For The Galaxy but I have not played RFTG).

I enjoyed playing, it was very quick to learn. I think there are a few subtle tactical choices to be made but the learning curve is not very steep.

I agree with other posters that it is light, but it has huge potential for expansion, just consider Dominion base set Vs Dominion now (in terms of tactical choices).

Dominion Isotropic / Re: seeing new entrants to the lobby

Use your status and the chat box to find the players you want. You might not be able to see them enter but at least they will be able to see you.

Latext gloves for all players?

It's going to be pretty tricky to apply any kind of moisture to them without the risk of damage. Some work with cotton buds may be in order, however that would take you ages. It would probably be more efficient to do a few hours of paid work and buy a new set..

Game Reports / Re: Don't Fear the Pirate Ship
« on: August 01, 2011, 06:31:16 am »
Ok, let me try the stats again:

This spreadsheet should give the odds for a successful Pirate Ship attack, based on the opponent's deck size and number of Treasure cards. I would appreciate if someone could double check my formula, which is:

Probability of the first card being a Treasure (#Treas/#Deck) +
Probability of the first card not being a Treasure while the second card is a Treasure [(#Deck-#Treas)/#Deck]*[#Treas/(#Deck-1)]

Please tell me that you are not filling in spreadsheets during games?

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry
« on: August 01, 2011, 06:21:41 am »
I have a fondness for decks with 3-4 Torturers in them...  I always feel a little bad for my opponents when I get them going (particularly if they're newer/lower-ranked and it may be the first time it's happening to them).  Sucks to be consistently hit with multiple Torturers every turn.

Yes, I feel immediately sorry for the Torturer scenario.  As soon as you see Torturer + a source of 2 actions... you know with 97% certainty that the game is going to be ugly, and one player isn't going to want to play dominion again for a while after it.

Losing due to torturer lock is one of the few times that I'll break my rule of "never waste a loss by ragequitting"

But isn't it only rage quitting if you post some hate/smack talk before quitting? More often now if I'm clearly losing and watching my oppenent play a 10 card chain and leaving me with nowhere to go I'll simply congratulate them for playing well and resign (only in 1 v 1, quitting in a 3/4 player game often affects the outcome).

I can take being beaten (it happens very often) but if there is nothing to learn I don't waste my time.

Perhaps we need to adopt a term for resigning gracefully to counter rage quit.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas

Cattle Ranch
$3
Action

Setup: Take a Barn mat, a Pasture mat, a Slaughterhouse mat, one Weather die, 20 Grass tokens and X Calf tokens, where X is equal to the number of cards trashed when purchasing Cattle Ranch.

When you purchase Cattle Ranch, you may trash any or all of the treasures used to purchase it, as well as any or all of the cards in your hand, and take that many Calf tokens and place them on the Barn mat.

When you play Cattle Ranch as an action, choose one:
* Move any or all of your Calf tokens to the Pasture mat.
* Remove one Grass token for each Calf token on the Pasture mat, and then replace each Calf token with a Cow token.
* Roll the Weather die, and place the resulting number of Grass tokens on the Pasture mat (possible results are 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, requiring a balanced 5-sided die)
* Move any or all of your Cow tokens from the Pasture mat to the Barn mat.
* Add one Calf token to the Barn mat for every Cow token on the Barn mat, minus one.
* Move any or all of your Cow tokens from the Pasture mat to the Slaughterhouse mat.
* Collect 1 VP token for each Cow token on the Slaughterhouse mat, and remove those tokens. (slaughtering for beef)
* Collect +$1 for each pair of Cow tokens on the Barn mat, rounding down. (milking)

So in summary: play a game of Agricola on the side when you play this card.

Just a comment about converting a potion cost card into coin cost. A potion costs $4 of course, but you also need to assign a value to the 'cost' of having a potion card in your deck.

Having to buy a potion card first means you can't buy card with a potion cost until at least turn 3. Then when you do draw your potion card there is no guarantee that you will have enough coin to buy the university (unlikey... but possible).

So in the past you would only be able to have a card with a potion cost in your hand by turn 5 at the very earliest. Add to this the 'cost' of waiting for your potion card to cycle through your deck to buy another alchemy card (or the cost of buying multiple potions).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: You may...
« on: July 23, 2011, 12:27:28 am »
In addition to all of the excellent ideas above:

1) you might want to play an action card simply to reduce the cost of peddler
2) Ambassador - you might want to clog your opponents with a copper but keep your's in hand for this turn to afford the card you want

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Never Ending Game?
« on: July 21, 2011, 10:43:58 pm »
I believe that Donald X has clarified that money cards should be considered infinite in amount (so that they never run out).

Obviously the game would be pretty expensive if they put an infinite number of cards in the box...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Must-Buy Cards?
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:34:29 pm »
I'm a little late to the party to suggest this but...

The question probably needs dividing into:

1) Cards that I must buy 1 (or a small number) of
2) Cards that I must buy lots of

So I would put Caravan into the 'buying lots of' catagory.

23
The black market card brings up an option to 'read cards' to view the 3 cards you have drawn. It seems odd that the same option is not provided for Tournament prizes...

24
Every once in a while I get a player you either declines repeatedly gives no reponse, or they insist on playing with sabetour, possession, (insert random annoying card), or a hand-picked set. If this happens I simply take off the auto-match for a minute then try again.

I find it amusing that the people who use auto match for its intended purpose (a random game against a random person) are the ones who take the time to uncheck the boxes and wait rather than the people who cherry pick card sets/opponents.

If you don't want random then don't use automatch.

25
Black Market gives you a pseudo buy phase during your action phase.

So yes, it would combine nicely with Tactician in that you can spend your treasure before you discard your whole hand. Isotropic is rarely wrong because it is used to play test new cards.
