Oh man, just re-read the thread... good times. I don't remember what PMs Axxle actually sent me the first time, so I'm having a hard time deciding whether to believe myself or not. Anyway, /in
Iirc, half the time you didn't even get a PM.

Rube Goldberg Machine - $2X

Event

Trash exactly X differently named cards you have in play. If you do, gain (X-1)2 VP.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate for this thread if it cost $0X and gave +1 buy?
I guess.

I mostly just post card ideas I have that look kinda interesting but are unworkable or tough to balance.

I feel like the strategy was a bit too obvious for this one.  Everybody wants points, so if everyone puts their pieces on the high point towers then everyone wins.
As someone on the sideline, it might have been a good idea to use your first two actions on towers that weren't the most obvious, to entice other players to use their last two actions on those same ones.

I don't understand anyone who said anything other than 2 or 3 for round 1. They were simply mathematically the best options; and there was no human component to consider. Similar for round 2, except you could argue 3,4 or 4,5 are better than 4,4.

For round 3, I failed to account for the human component and still expected about half heads.

*edit* Ok, after reading liopoil's post, I see th human component now; the hope that you split the win less. But I still think it just makes the most sense to go with the most likely win.
This is actually similar to something that daily fantasy players have to take into consideration: ownership percentage. So you sometimes have to play the guy who is projected to get fewer points, but fewer other managers are playing. You might hit less often than the other players, but when you do hit it matters a lot more since you beat a larger percentage of the opposition if the underdog does go off.

You're playing this game against people who aren't perfect logicians. If you don't assume some people will play suboptimally, then that's playing suboptimally.

I agree with everything except the bolded part.

But why do you take issue with it?
Are you surprised people are arguing semantics?

Edge case: Vineyard

Still has the problem of rats hitting vineyards unless you can pseudo-trash which is tricky to execute.

I've just attempted to shuffle my hand.

Now there's blood everywhere and I should probably call an ambulance.
How do you shuffle just one hand?

I was very confused by some of the guesses in that game. Why did so many people guess near 50 in round 1? Why did everyone go for the unstable equilibrium in round 2 instead of the stable one near 4.5? Why does Calamitas' strategy make sense? Why the random square roots UoS? I just tried to guess how far off the stable equilibrium people would be guessing, and in the first two rounds I way underestimated.

Props to faust for submitting an exact fixed point all three rounds.

I picked what I wanted my guess to be to like 1 decimal place.  Then I squared that, picked a random number close to that, and submitted the square root of that, something with a bunch of decimal places.  It was just a lazy way to have a lot of decimal places to make ties less likely.  By the 3rd one I thought there was really no chance of a tie anyway but I just did it to keep the pattern.
But ties are good :-D
"If there is a tie for the winner, each tied player scores 9 points, MINUS 1 per additional player who tied with them"

Doesn't sound so great to me

That's pretty similar to what I was trying, although I completely failed my submission in the first round.

back to topic: I can't promise anything yet but chances that I will go to Amsterdam and then to any place of Germany you choose are increased. Probably late July/early August. So count me /in with a big probability.

If the meetup will be in Amsterdam, that would be even perfecter.
Problem is nobody of us is located in Amsterdam, which makes organizing there harder.
If you want to organize a meetup away from where people live, AirBnB works pretty well.

Well, my plan failed.
It was pointless.

It would have worked the first round.
I meant it literally got you no points  ;)

I wonder if this game would be slightly more interesting if prizes with tied high bids go to the next highest bid rather than just being eliminated all together.

General Discussion / Re: Random Stuff Part III

I guess it also depends on how shuffled you need them.  If you could, another idea would be to just have a RNG tell you which card to pick from the stack.

So maybe have 20 stacks or something, and just pick a random stack, then a random card from that stack.

That's pretty interesting, split the deck into 20, riffle shuffles each, number them, and then roll a d20 each time you need to draw. No need to choose a random card if that deck is already shuffled

I think that's also called the Wash shuffle, where you basically scatter the cards on the table and shuffle them like dominoes.

How random do you need it? My thought is:

1) split the cards into manageable piles (let's say 10 piles of 150)

2) riffle shuffle each to sufficient randomness (8 times I think for those sized piles)

3) reseed the piles (split each pile in tenths and make new piles from each old pile)

4) repeat steps 3-4 a number of times equal to the original number of decks (so 10 times)

That's like 800 riffle shuffles so might be overkill, but I think it's correct. My concern is with the number of repeats, but if I imagine each starting subdeck as completely homogenous and distinct, I think it takes that many iterations to work.

Alternatively to be absolutely certain just roll 1499 dice of decreasing value.

I still don't get the concept of having a favorite color.

I had a problem with that too, but then I started to think of it as in having a favourite polyhedron, but with colours instead.

I failed to understand that as well, but then I considered the similarity between having a favorite polyhedron and having a favorite quark.
That's strange

You have so much charm
Is that the truth?
