Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Spillage Village
« on: August 21, 2018, 07:52:59 pm »
people like these don't know that they are called "splitters" either ... and this won't help'em as well ...

why, for christ sake, make it harder than it is?!

conditional village or village variants would be fine, too

Village has always been used and understood by everyone

No it hasn't, there are people who don't understand that Summon is a village.

it may be not the muhammed ali of all combos but harbinger and training turned out like a really good chain fishing all the harbinger out of the dust and playing them...

what about if pirate ship either discards or trash the treasure?
this way, the pirate ship player can decide, if he wants to destroy the other players treasure pay load or keep him the coppers
that would address one of pirate ships biggest problems

and thinking of that, i dont know which card may deserve it best, but what about handing out copper as an attack?
or maybe, mine - the treasure you are trashing is gained to the enemy on the left (so even silver ..)

i have the german dark ages, yes.

it still felt quite strong gaining every turn at least one 5-cost card

5
i tried search, so excuse me if it already dropped
had a play (and a blast) with armory and procession
gaining 5 cost (duke) -> three piling, was kinda fun

I don't care what the name is. You can call them villages, splitters, +actions, tacos, bananas, or you can call them anti-terminals like I do. What matters is the subset of cards that you are thinking of when you use any of these terms, and it's very important that cards like Summon, King's Court and Champion are included in that subset. To use your metal metaphor, saying that Summon isn't a village is like saying that Slipknot, Between the Buried and Me, Last Days of Humanity, Rammstein, Periphery, and a ton of other metal bands aren't metal because reasons — it might be a comfortable position for some to take, but it's complete nonsense for any practical purposes.

Why should I include a one-shot ... or a Throny, when i want to talk about spamable villages?! there are huge differences, actual practical differences
its not about the term, but how some believe that this-or-that needs to be in this "loose group" - and that's what i find is arbitrary
you draw the line there, i here

Ah, you have a slightly different definition of trash-for-benefit from me. (Although the only cards that come into my categorization and not yours are, I think, Transmute and Counterfeit.)

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=17368.0

Just, out of curiosity, why does everything has to have some kind of special name?

I would think, that the majority would understand, if someone says "it's a village (variant)" "it's a remodel (variant)", while adding "but it does this or that in a different way" if it is necessary for the context.

If the term "village variant" is too narrow (leaving too many variants out) then you will, more or less, happen to have for every dominion card an own term, which adds no benefit. In the contrary: calling the actual card village a splitter just adds more complexity.
i can say village is a village and so is port. but i don't have to learn, what a splitter is.
i even think, that if i use "village" or made-up stuff like "action gainer" or "card-shaped stuffy which lets me do more stuff in my action phase" - the majority will understand.
if, in the context, it is important to differentiate between the card "village" and "throne room", someone will call it "throny" "throne room variant" etc. pp
a little bit like gernes of music: people may understand the difference between pop, rock, metal etc. pp
but the fewest can know the correct difference between thrash metal and speed metal - its easier to just call the band Metallica or Aerosmith or whatever ... with that: knowing what a splitter is, is just interesting for people, deep enough in the knowing about dominion, which also tends to know the fine and subtle differences between village or fishing village or throne room or summon ... (list exemplary but not limited to these 4)

again - just out of curiosity. I am reading every second day in this forum more or less all the new posts - but these "how do you call a village" topics always keep me puzzled and never have gained me any insights ... (more than reading that f.i. expand is like the bigger brother of remodel, but the rest is quite similar and with that, the cards behave similar, depending of the kingdom...)

on the other side, i like smugglers - what do i know?! :-D

i had a game with shanty town and training
i played big money-ish, with some minor drawing (+2)
payload was gold
i managed to draw 2 cards like 3-4 times of 5 shanty towns
a +2 +2 which also gave (1) for (3) was just epic
i finished game with 6 to 2 prov. (triple province in last round)

Sorry for necro and being maybe more a rules question:

But with thronies and KC its kinda strong, isn't it?!
Will you get the +4 twice / thrice (?) with just the need of leaving (2) left,
it may be not as strong as KC'ed Bridge - but not bad either

« on: December 16, 2017, 06:39:18 pm »
I recall Donald did a "if I had a time machine" rebuff for Scout.  Was there ever such a case here?  If not, any user community buffs to make this... well, not such so much, and actually be worth buying more than 5% or so of the cases?

we are currently trying several versions of this card:

- one is: Transmute +1VP -> so its action victory card; transmuting copper into more transmutes which then get transmuted into gold and duchy
- other is, transmute as a can trip (so it doenst hurt getting more transmutes while trashing copper)
(combination of these two was way too cwazy)

- regarding opportunity cost we tried an on-buy +buy effect like forum has or $4 instead of P

but we are still evaluating if cost need to be adapted

(PS: i rather have a card which is slightly too powerful than one which doesn't get bought at all)
(PPS: sorry for necroing :-D )

okay, i thought a bit about guardian and your thoughts...
i think, starting 3/4, buying guardian guarantees you 5 right away. which may be pretty strong
esp. if the (5) is an attack and so you already have your "moat"

anyway - thanks for your thoughts

Dominion General Discussion / 5 Star - Rating (?) Cards
« on: January 23, 2017, 07:32:05 pm »
Hello, first and foremost, i am still at the very basis of being an "ambitious hobby dominion player". So, if there are any remarks which are absolut nuts, i hope i will be forgiven  ;D

As far as i like all these Qvist-lists etc.pp, i wonder if it's in any way more helpful (for newbies) to rate the cards on its own using a 5 star system. (and with that, deciding which kind of board in "any given kingdom" is). With that in mind, cards may be more comparable irrespective of their actual cost. Sometimes, the limiting factor is not the amount of money, but the number of buys or the number of actions to play etc.pp. Most of the time, i dont need to decide which village is better (as interesting this question may be), but taking this $3 or that $4 card...On the other hand, there are many many factors, which makes it so hard to rank one card against another. So maybe its "enough" to state, this card is roughly equaly good for BM games, than the other one...

Of course, this will and can not happen only in one general approach, but in a slighty detailed analysis:
I can imagine something like this: [for example Chapel - as i would rate it]
EARLY GAME:   ***** [It greatly improves your deck, the earlier, the better]
(MIDGAME):     **      [it may have some use to get rid of early silvers or in other way improving your deck]
ENDGAME:       **      [it may have some use to get rid of incoming curses/ruins]
ENGINE:          ****   [it enables engines in one of the best ways, yet Chapel on its own is terminal and doesnt draw cards]
BM big money: *         [It thrashes estates and ruins, but thats covered in othere sections ...]
SLOG:             ***      [combination of midgame and endgame abilities]

I put midgame in parenthesis because the style of game (engine or bm) dictates your midgame and therefore would be duplicated. (doesnt it?)

Furthermore, i am really interested, which $2, $3 or $4 cards are (always strictly) better than silver or even gold.
Which $5, $6 or $7 cards are better than gold/platinum Which $3-cards are better than $-cards4 better than $5-cards (depending on engine/bm). MAYBE, this rating will help me in understanding this.
Opening with at least 1 silver boosts more village: villages mostly dont enhance your deck and f.i. opening village/silver will be worse than silver/silver (hitting $5 more reliable), or?

In the end, it may also help understanding if a kingdom is a strong ENGINE or a mediocre BM. Adding upp all stars? Maybe thats just plain stupid... maybe it only needs 3 engine cards with 4 stars or 2 with 5...

I hope, you will get the idea.

What do you think?

thx Qvist, for doing all that crazy amount of work

i find it quite hard to compare cards like stonemason, which is not really a 2 card
with other 2 cards ... any advise? (most of the time, i play it more like a 5 - 8 card ...)

I love peddler with training.
Cantrip for 0, worth a silver.
You just only need +buy then ;)

Yes i know about 10 curses 8 vp cards....
But we change even that. You play different for 8 then for 12 provinces in 2p....
Anyway: i wanted to contribute sth positive and not just complain about shitty cards.

Thx for replying and yes: some points are right. With better cards you have more strategies / more fun to play. I see that.

And a really big thank for all the long long replies. I do appreciate them!
You hardly find a game where the developer is that active.

And to sum it up: i will of course include the new cards. And play them ;)

(I didnt get the joke with the 6 expansions... So much for that)

Dominion General Discussion / Why i love Dominion with all its Duds
« on: October 03, 2016, 01:11:09 pm »
Hello, as you can see, i am a completely new User.

I have read months now, visiting this forum and the wiki, always just as a bypasser, reading all and every tiny bit about dominion.
I fell in love with this game, i guess like nearly everyone else here, right then in just one game. And the good thing is: my girlfriend as well.
And nowadays, i am reading a lot about bad and very very bad cards, as well.
So i thought by myself, to leave some thoughts about that. As a ambitious casual gamer.

I am starting with a recent game: One of the funniest i had so far, a game with thief. It was hillarious. It was just pure fun. We had just one option for virtual money, and that was pirate ship. So there were two cards, considered to be actually "bad". But as soon, as everyone realised, that we actually needed to rebuy coppers and silver (gold was out of the reach  ;D) it got the pirates coming in again ... and then again there were thiefs, so silver and some gold was being exchanged back and forth until it was destroyed by one one the many ships. BM was no option. The other cards weren't really good for any kind of engine.

I know that there are cards, which are just better than others. But all comparison happens every time in a vacuum where each and every card is compared to 300 (400?) other cards. When we play, you just compare it to the other 9. And nobody thinks about cards, which are not in play. When was the last time, you had 2 villages in one set? Where it "really matters" comparing these two. In the end, you have to stick, to what you get...or not? You want actions: buy that village, with an embargo token on it.
So, the unfun part of some cards is more the set-up than the cards themself.
(We played one game with 40 curses, in a two player game, and the (only) curser was embargo. In the end Provinces had 3 tokens, Duchies 1 or 2 ...)

I am no pro. I havent played like 1000 games. Honestly, i dont want to. We play for fun. We make misplays in buying cards who are suboptimal just for the sake of playing them, trying new tactics (why i love coppersmith f.i.) and because it is fun. As soon as we realised that some combos are way too good, we tried to mix them with other cards, so that the advantage will not be that prominent, or we played some weeks without them (village&smithy - its boring, its more "bad", in my eyes, that getting rid of thief) - playing with cards where you make this "woooohoooo" because you just hit his gold or platinum...

Maybe, you will laugh about this, maybe some will try to lecture me, or so. I don't know.
I freaking love this game, i have 6! expansion. Come on that means something  :D (and thank you Mr. Vaccarino - my GF kinda "hates" you: ANOTHER EXPANSION??? :P)

I will stick to the old cards, okay maybe not Spy but hey, you still can go like:
If Spy is the only card with +1 action, and there is throne room - you actually buy that MoFu as part of an engine ...

i think , my point is clear. You may now convince me, that all changes are just for the better (which truly is, for new players - but i was a new player back then, and did not need a better base set - which one the "game of the year" and not the 2nd version ...)
and yes: i am freaking looking forward to the new cards as well :-)
