Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interesting Accessibility Quirk
« on: June 23, 2016, 07:08:16 am »
As someone new to Dominion, I have noticed something interesting about it in general that makes discussion kind of inaccessible to newbies:

Most articles and discussions rely on the audience having knowledge of nearly all the cards from the expansions. I know the base game very well now, but none of the expansions. And while I plan on getting the expansions, I have decided I will get one at a time instead of all at once. This way I savor it a bit more, I suppose. Don't get me wrong - I think the expansions are super cool and cannot wait to sink my teeth into them - but their presence makes discussions difficult for those 'not in the know'.

It is an odd thing. The silver lining is that every fan gets there at some point. The only other solution is for the community to discuss cards at a different level. Instead of focusing on 'Cellar', it could be binned in to a slightly broader-yet specific category of 'cycle enhancer' or 'discarder' or something similar.

Interesting. Anyways, loving this community so far. Thanks for listening.

Couple of words on expansions. Dunno if community supports me, but I'd advise you to buy expansions one-by-one and combine them in pairs e.g. Intrigue+seaside, Intrigue+Prosperity and so on. That was how I started and I got to remember different mechanics of different sets rather quickly. Then, you can combine all the cards and see the rest o' the combos.

Very interesting. I'd love to hear from others about their ideas and thoughts on this. Sounds like a good plan.

If you are interested in documentaries, check out Going Cardboard. Its a documentary about board games, and has a decent amount of Dominion in it. This is how and why I bought the game!

Yay!

Donald X is in the movie!!!!!

I've never met or heard Donald X, I've only seen pictures of him. He is not quite what I imagined, but man, he seems pretty cool.

Oh sweet you found a link!! Thank you!

That is actually done a lot. Cellar falls into the categories of discard-for-benefit, cycling (i.e. making your reshuffles happen faster, to get to your newly bought cards faster), sifting (i.e. improving the quality of your hand or draw pile by cherry picking good cards rather than bad ones) and non-terminal Action. All of these categories are relevant in some cases — for instance, engine decks tend to want a lot of cycling, slog decks want a lot of sifting, and specific cards such as Tunnel and Golem care about discard-for-benefit and non-terminal Actions, respectively. Doesn't really matter a lot whether it's Cellar or another card that does a similar thing, but obviously some other cards are better at it than Cellar.

Awesome!! Thank you!

Thanks everybody for commenting and reading :)

This extension makes it easier to reference cards while browsing the forum here, the card names turn into links that you can even hover over to see the card - http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13363.0

Right on. Yeah that definitely helps, although I need to play with a card in reality to actually wrap my head around it completely.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Junking Estates
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:56:37 am »
The only thing I'll add is that there are exceptions when you want to keep maybe 1 Estate instead of trashing it early.  Say for example you and your opponent are playing with Jack of all Trades, and it is likely that you will split the Provinces 4-4.  Having kept an Estate, while your opponent trashed all of theirs, can make or break the game for you.

But ya, when in doubt, get rid of em.  If you don't yet realize why, you will pretty soon.

Everything everyone has said makes complete sense - this reminds me of that article I read recently about PPR.

Thank you everyone for the detailed responses - it seems quite clear now. This is very helpful.

faust - I love that quote - it sums it up really well once I thought about it.

Others will probably give you more details that back this up, but it comes down to the fact that not having that Estate in your deck for the whole game will improve your capacity to buy points later by significantly more than the 1 point you lose by trashing it.

Yeah I was sort of thinking along those lines - like - if losing an Estate or two now means an extra Province - all the better.

Yeah you definitely bring up some good points. A lot of these are less 'mistakes' and more 'good etiquette'.

I think much of what you mentioned happens when people get excited and start playing too fast and cutting corners.

Dominion General Discussion / [solved] Junking Estates

Edit: Relevant discussion/article here: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=595.0
tl;dr for this post below: Estates are small change and clog up your deck early on, when Provinces dwarf them in late game. Maybe keep one around in case you are neck-and-neck even with your opponent.

Hello All.

I am relatively new to Dominion, but have certainly read and re-read a majority of the recommended articles. I now clearly understand why one would want to junk Coppers, but am still on the fence about junking Estates, and wanted some clarification.

Yes the Estates can clog up the deck, but they also contribute to the source of the win - if we are throwing out points - to a certain extent I'm not sure what we are doing. On one hand, I suppose ridding yourself of an Estate may be kind of a neutral move where now no one has that point.

Can anyone point to a very specific article about this, or sum it up for me? Thank you in advance,

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Dominion Online on Steam Greenlight

I just wanted to greenlight this after MF explaining what they're actually doing, but it turns out it has already been accepted.

Will Dominion Online in-fact be on Steam in 2017? Geeze it certainly makes smart business sense. Opens up it to the world of gaming.

Dominion FAQ / Darker-blue backed cards
« on: June 21, 2016, 04:47:08 pm »
Correct me where I'm wrong here:

The darker-blue backed kingdom cards (at least in the base set - all I have) are for use as a randomizer, right? They are essentially the '11th' of each kingdom card (obviously not to be used for general play).

What about the darker-blue backed VP and Treasure cards? What are they for? Thats what I can't figure out.

Thanks in advance,

Goko Dominion Online / Re: [solved] Double turn in Dominion online?

It's possible you're getting Cellar and Chapel mixed up.

It happened on several different turns/occasions with different cards. I could get them mixed up by accident, but I really don't think I did.

Doesn't matter - I think the above answers solved it. Thanks for the post.

I believe one of the campaigns has levels where each card (not turn) you play automatically gets a Throne Room put in front of it.  So with Cellar you would discard and draw twice.  Cellar does not trash though.

Even though I was only playing the base set? The only cards I saw in play were from the base set. Maybe I'm confused about how the campaigns work in Dominion Online.

Thanks for the response.

The campaigns occasionally do wonky stuff that doesn't happen in regular games of Dominion.

Good to know. I guess that makes more sense now. Thanks again.

I was looking to play some straight up single player Dominion! Oh well, it is very fun playing Dominion Online, I must say.

Goko Dominion Online / [solved] Double turn in Dominion online?
« on: June 21, 2016, 03:55:04 pm »
Answer: There can be various modifiers in the campaign mode for Dominion Online. Thanks everybody.

Hello! I just started playing Dominion online today. I am only playing the campaigns so far (single player, of course).

Something odd - it seems that it is giving me double turns (two turns in a row). For example, I play Cellar, and it allows me to trash cards discard, ok. I click 'done' or whatever it says, and it then allows me to select more cards to trash discard (and of course I have not played another Cellar card or anything). Edit: I meant discard and not trash, thanks Kirian for pointing that out  :)

EDIT: I should add that I am playing the beta in the window version.

Any thoughts? It is doing this for other turns, too.

Thank you in advance,
