Goko Dominion Online / Re: Number of games on Goko
« on: June 01, 2013, 03:10:43 am »
I have to admit my empathy with all those who are going on about how they miss Dominion is kinda limited.
There's nothing that should stop you from playing on Goko, it's working pretty well by now.
Well, there's the small problem that if I forced myself to engage with that interface for more than 20-30 minutes in a day, there's a high probability I would accidentally murder someone.

And then I'd be stuck in prison, with no way to play Dominion.

As much as I love Dominion, I just can't sit and look at that interface.  Just can't do it.

Maybe I'm being obstinate here, but it's pretty difficult to justify supporting a system that I consider to be wildly inferior to the version that one guy built in his spare time.

How much staff do you really need to read f.DS?

(Related question: how many Goko VPs does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Six. One to program the lightbulb, two to fix the way it works, two to monetize it, and one to explain to the community why it won't quite be fixed for another week.
And one more to turn off all the lights in the other (much nicer!!!) room.

I can play a game against Stef where we each have a 50/50 chance of winning right now.  It'll take just one second...

Hmmm, the coin came up heads.  So Stef won that one.  But if we play again, maybe it'll be my turn.

Which is to say, I play(ed) Dominion because I like playing Dominion.  Choosing strategies that guarantee a random result is a stupid idea even if I'm playing someone that I am pretty confident is better than me.  Unless it's like, the finals of a tournament.  Or I'm playing for my life against a movie-villain-Dominion-mastermind or something.

Same as jonts.  Was hoping to get back to 50, but am pretty happy to finish up in the top 5.

And ended up third for skill.  Woohoo.

Bummer.  I was hoping it would stay up for the whole evening and I could get a couple more games in.

It's been a fun couple years.  Cheers, everyone.

The interface.

I just...can't.  I realize that this is an area where plenty of people seem to prefer it over the minimalism of Iso.  But there's just no chance I will enjoy spending a significant amount of my time looking at that.

I'll probably check back here occasionally, and will try to play IRL when I have the chance.  But I think my serious Dominion days will be ending next week.

It's been fun.

+'s
Card art
Dark Ages
Relatively quick gameplay if your opponent knows what they are doing
Relatively short wait for a game if you find an opponent who you enjoy playing with and agree to matches
Player base that is growing in competitiveness
It is completely free and I am finding that many people I play with own all the sets
"Relatively short wait for a game if you find an opponent who you enjoy playing with and agree to matches" is about as backhanded a compliment as I can imagine.  The wait time if you have an opponent to play multiple games with ought to be basically zero.

How is the wait time if you just want a competitive game against a random person?  For Iso it's ~10 seconds.  My limited experience on Goko says that it's a lot more.  Would those who play more disagree?

So I created a new account, to see if I could get it to level 50, and if so, how quickly.  And then I did it.  In about 300 games. Go me.

And then Yahoo ate the account it was linked to, so now I can't access it anymore.  Goodbye Veil of Ignorance.  It was fun not knowing anything about my social location or even my concept of the good while I played under you!

« on: January 28, 2013, 08:24:55 pm »
I've always assumed 0/1/2.

Level 0 Cities are just...Cities.  So there's no need to specify a level.  Level 1 means partially activated and Level 2 means fully activated.

But I can totally see how someone would assume it goes 1/2/3, too.  Confusing!

« on: January 28, 2013, 04:42:54 pm »
I don't know that I found this set of matches particularly luck dependent.

Yeah, I don't think they were extraordinary luck dependent. But they were extremly favoring first player. Tournament twice, cursers, Fool's Gold... So in the end it's probably only logical that the first player advantage won between two players that good (though Stef is probably still a slight tough above everyone else).
Stef is 6.5 levels above anyone else at the moment. I think it's more than just first player advantage. After him it gets closer again, but he is just miles above anyone else at the moment. (Interestingly, olneyce, a level 42, seems to have the 2nd highest skill.)
That's what playing only a couple games a week will do for you!

It looks like I've gone 27-4 in the month and a half since being eliminated from the tournament.  Bumping my skill up 3 points, while knocking the certainty down about the same amount.

Just had a look at the schedule, thats pretty close to the end of the season, 4 games left.
They are already 11 points ahead, so if things keep going as they are, they will have won the title by then.

No idea on Barca philosophy but there is potential they cold start resting players for champions league semis and later (amd they will probablybein the final of the spanish cp as well?)

As to getting a ticket, cant amswer that, but if it was England you probably would have no chance at a big london club (or man U or liverpool) but no ideaon spanish attendances
Barca don't really believe in rotation all that much.  At least not for Messi - who in addition to being the best player in the world also appears to be pretty indestructible.

You might miss out on Xavi, or one or two others, but you'll get a good show.

Ohne Holland, fahr'n wir zur WM!

(english translation (kinda): go lespeutere!)
Schade Deutschland alles ist vorbei? :)

If this were really about football (and I mean the game in which you actually play a ball with your foot, not the other one where carry some oval thing around in your hand), the final - no matter what the semifinal result will be - would be sort of like a walk in the park. ;)
Well, the US played Germany in the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals.  And should have won!

Damn you, Frings...

I'm over .500 barely against three of the four.  And only down one against Bonogi.  But I'm pretty sure I would lose badly to any of them if we played today.

Good luck to everyone.  Excited to see the games.

Good luck to everyone in the final 8.  It's pretty awesome to make it even this far - as it seems like the competition this time around is a fair amount better than it even was last time.  Particularly impressive for WW to make it this far both years.

If I was going to bet, it would be on Stef.  But any of the remaining 8 would be a worthy winner.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: A New Kind of Pin
« on: January 08, 2013, 02:40:06 am »
I also suppose this isn't always a true pin even when the conditions are met, because an opponent can just buy Coppers, Forge nothing -> Copper and bloat up his deck until it can no longer be drawn by opponent Governors or CRs.
True, though this pin has the advantage of letting you play your whole deck every turn as you enact it.  Seems like you should be able to win in a couple turns anyways.

I don't play Starcraft, in part because I get very bored by games for which 'graphics are important.'

Wow.  Never play Myst, then.

This is probably not really relevant to Dominion, but there is a lot to be said for games for which graphics are important - it creates an atmosphere that allows you to just be absorbed by the game.  Games like Skyrim or Amnesia work largely in part due to their graphics.  Hell, the graphics are sort of the whole point of Amnesia.  Graphics are half the point of the Myst games.  And the graphics, gameplay and music of both Braid and Shadow of the Colossus combine to create what could be considered real works of art.

And if I'm going to play a game on a computer, which has the capability to make a game look nice, I'd prefer it to look nice.
I get that other people like graphics.  I'm just saying that I personally don't.  And that's why Goko annoys me.

Basically: if I'm going to play a game on a computer, which has the capability to automate repetitive tasks, massively speed up boring elements of the game, and present information in a clean and clear way, I'd prefer that it do that.

This is not surprising to me at all.  Often I find the 'basic' version of a program to be superior, because I get really irritated with unnecessary bells and whistles.

I still wish I could go back to Word 97, rather than the monstrosity that is the newest version of Microsoft Office, for example.

If you were to play StarCraft, would you prefer it to just be a white background with little chess pieces moving across it, or would even that be too ostentatious for you?

Graphics are important for a commercial game.  It has to look nice.

Now, knowing that Goko is here to stay (its userbase continues to grow), and Iso will inevitably be shut down, wouldn't it be more constructive to post your ideas on their getsatisfaction, and try to steer the design into something you'd find at least palatable?
I don't play Starcraft, in part because I get very bored by games for which 'graphics are important.'

I like Dominion 99.9% because the mechanics of the game are great and 0.1% because the pictures are neat.  And even there, I have a lot more affection for the Isotropic pictures than the 'real' ones.  Goko makes the mechanics of the game WAY more cumbersome, thus eating substantially into my enjoyment of the game.

As for biting the bullet and making contributions to improving Goko, I don't know what to tell you. I have a basic dislike for the whole structure of the game they have built.  I don't have very many minor-level concerns (and I *did* post most of those back in the first Beta).  I just don't like the essence of their product.

Again, maybe my opinions will change once Isotropic is actually gone and I have no other way to play Dominion.  But I genuinely think I'll just...stop playing Dominion online rather than playing on Goko.

I hate the interface.  That's about it.

For those who say 'it's more like IRL Dominion,' I agree. But IRL Dominion is the inferior version of the game.  And for those who say 'it's more appealing to the common fan,' I'm not sure I agree. But regardless, I'm not the common fan, and I happen to hate it.

I can't really imagine spending money to play it that way, even with Dominion being my favorite game.  We'll see if that changes once Iso finally goes, but...to me it's just a completely different (and far worse) game.

I find it hilarious that you find what is essentially bug-testing software to be superior to an actual finished product.

IRL Dominion is fun with your friends at a game night.  Actually holding the cards in your hand is a tactile pleasure that Iso can't replicate.  But Goko is just a poor imitation of the benefits you can get from real life, without capitalizing on the ways in which Dominion can be IMPROVED on the computer.

I'm sure some people prefer Goko.  I don't think they're lying to us or something. But I emphatically do not prefer Goko.  And maybe it was a smart business decision to appeal to new players who would be turned off by an Iso-style interface.  But they have to understand that it comes at the cost of seriously turning off people like me.

You can't please everyone, of course.
