Adjusting the volume of the sound should be possible.

I have no idea why that is not possible in the current client.

I really like that idea. Good old Hot-Seat.
You pass the tablet around and have the game mirrored to the TV.
This is clearly just for the casual players and seeing your opponents hand doesnīt really matter in casual games.
I would very much like such an option.

What I really do not understand is the sublimal hostility towards Donald and the smirk posts without providing anything useful to the discussion, just for the sake of arguing. Why, just why?
If this had been a few minutes earlier I would have just deleted it with the rest, but instead I edited it so you didn't wonder, wtf where is my post. So this is the part that wasn't part of The Continuing Story of Awaclus. It's uh. It's not exactly good times but you get to say it anyway. Which I guess is part of the explanation you're looking for too.

Thanks for the explanation. I was indeed very confused after my post ;-)

I think that the Peasant ==> Teacher line is overrated. The potential of the card is insane, but it is quite slow.
Coin of the Realm seems underrated, I think that card is absolutely insane, borderline broken.

I have a problem with the Page ==> Hero line. If you get lucky and trash your opponents Warrior with your Warrior then the game is basically over. There is no recovery from that.

7. If you don't make animations sparkle enough, it will ruin the game for casual users.

I highly doubt that.

Your averall post seems solid, so I just asume youīre trying to troll us with the last statement.

« on: April 24, 2016, 06:08:58 am »
I have played far more 4p games than 2p games with Golem and in those it is quite often a trap card.
Golem is undeniably a powerful card, but setting things up is slow.
You have to get a potion, you need some cards that you want to hit with Golem, you need some payload in your deck and you should be able to reliably hit $4P.
That is quite a lot and a very simple big money strategy is often faster.

What works pretty well is transitioning from Familiar to Golem, getting the Potion just for Golem seems hardly worth it.

As a slowish player, I beg you not to enforce timed games on everybody (unless the time limit is pretty generous).
I understand those people that want their plays to move along fast, but playing fast extremely reduces my enjoyment of Dominion. Adding a preference for the time limit (fast vs slow) in a way similar to how vp counters work now would keep everybody happy, I guess, but at the cost of slower matchups.

As a player that likes to take his time to make a play I am interested what you consider slowish?
There are some morons that start insulting you, if you take 10 seconds to look at the board and other people that take forever for some reason.
Imho a player should time out a lot faster, if he does not perform any action whatsoever and is clearly not present. I am perfectly fine with people taking their time, but some people are clearly doing something else, besides playing the game. In fact in a particular slow game I decided to start cooking and coming back every 5 or even more minutes was not a problem at all, which really should not be possible.
As it is you can very much make the other player resign, if you so desire. I did this to a player, which starting insulting me after the mentioned 10 seconds. If you want to you can take a really really long time for each of your turns without timing out.

This is a card, which takes new players a while to fully understand.
Playing a card twice is not the same as playing 2 of those cards. You play one of those cards and you play a much better version of that card, which gives an additional action. That is how I explained it to my game group.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: House rules you use
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:43:13 am »
With Tournament you have to discard the province instead of just revealing it. We play mostly 4p games and the players that get to province first are already in a better spot and having to just reveal the province usually means that the last player to get a province has no chance to get back in the game.
I think this originated from a translation error on our version and we stuck to it, because all players liked this alot more.

Sounds to me like you're playing the rules as written.  You're supposed to discard the Province when you play Tournament, but you don't have to discard it if you are revealing it on another player's turn in order to 'block' them.

However there is nothing to stop you re-drawing the Province and using it again later the same turn. :)

Off-topic, I think a four-player Tournament game sounds like bad times for someone no matter what...

Sorry, I meant the part about revealing it to the other player that plays Tournament. We discard it instead.

I remember Thief from our first 4p games. I had a litte 2p online experience and did not bother with Thief, because the card is not much good in those games.
All my 3 opponents opened with Thief. Needless to say that I got totaly rekt that game ;-)

Seriously, with my game group we ignore the effect most of the time, it just doesnīt seem important enough to interrupt a conversation or prelong a game where someone actually got Spy.

I actually find Spy much more bearable IRL than online.
When playing F2F, we go "rabble mode", each player making the obvious Spy decisions on their own, and only asking the attacker if they reveal a "doubtful" card (typically copper). Also, you can avoid revealing again if you already revealed the same card to an earlier spy.
That way, the player simply announces "Spy!", and goes on with their turn, just like you do for most other attacks.

Yeah, Iīd like that this were the case with my game group. I guess the problem is that most people are not paying enough attention.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Spy

Spy is something that I'm going to say flat out, something you don't want unless you can just gain it, and only after there's nothing better to gain.

That's true. It's also true for Mountebank, Rebuild, Cultist, Wharf and Colony, among others. You don't want to gain them if there's something better to gain, and you don't really gain them very often unless you can gain them.

What's better to gain than a Colony? And don't say something lame like the last card in the third pile, ending the game and making sure you win. And also don't say the last Province. I think that's all the edge cases, of course barring the whole two Colonies left thing.

Donīt argue with him. I do not know what his problem is.
And thanks for posting new Threads about the older cards. Unlike some people I really appreciate these. Some of us have not been around here forever.

This thread made me realize that I forgot that this card exists.
It is a perfect additional to the other thread.
This card is more irrelevant than Scout, at least I can give someone a Scout when I hit a $4 card with a Swindler.

Honestly, most of the time this card does very little to nothing. If I can gain it for free and there is nothing below $5 I want in my deck and I am playing extremely competitive, yeah sure I gain this. Otherwise I would not bother with the card, because all it does is make the game take longer and annoy everyone.
Seriously, with my game group we ignore the effect most of the time, it just doesnīt seem important enough to interrupt a conversation or prelong a game where someone actually got Spy.

I feel the need to add something.
I did not understand the thing about the offline client at first.
I thought the MF client could do that, got unsure and tested it and it can not do that.
With this revelation I feel pretty okay with my stuff getting transfered to the offline client, might be nice to have the option to play that on the bus, even when I obviously have never bothered with this.
I do think that the new model is better than the current/old. Itīs just that the whole situation makes me feel a bit sour about Dominion in general.
I realise that this is unfair towards the new team. If I had started to play Dominion today and not already invested any money in the game I would be really happy about this news.

I haven't read all of the other replies but I have to admit that I also find this entire ordeal really annoying. I payed the equivalent of $90, so I can occasionally play Dominion at my free leisure. Recently I had troubles in my life and didn't really have time for anything and I still don't and now you're telling me that my purchase will basically be just a waste? Making my purchase the equivalent of a service of about $36 is not a good reimbursement, come on. I'd rather prefer MF to still hold the contract at this time even though it is far from perfect and made me use SCSNs mod to make it more bearable.

I'd rather pay a steep price once than pay a little each month and feel like I wasted money if I don't play at least once this month. I am disillusioned at how poor structered the new pay model is and how everyone is so ecstatic about these news.

I think that most people understand that ongoing services have a cost.  Some places use donation models to keep things going (BGA, Yucata, Kingdom of Loathing).  Some use pay-to-win or pay-for-hats to keep things going (Prismata, Hearthstone, and *shudder* mobile freemium).  And others use subscriptions.

Making Fun had an unsustainable business model.  They were going to get less and less revenue each month at some point, and server costs were going to eat them.

The thing about subscriptions is, you don't have to pay every month!  Shit hit the fan IRL?  Cancel for the next few months, bam, done.  You could request/suggest that the free year be allowed to be taken as 12 months, I suppose.

And yes, you could argue that a donation model might work.  But how many people will donate to server costs?  Would they need a yearly donation drive like BGG or Wikipedia?  How quickly would that start to hurt?  I personally would rather have a sustainable service, and $3 a month is an incredible price point.

Well said.  Really, this feeling that people have of getting multiply charged is Goko/Making Fun's fault of setting up their model the way they did in the first place.  I believe if this were the very first implementation of Online Dominion, people wouldn't be so affronted by the subscription model, even if they didn't agree that it was optimal.

Yeah, the payment model is not that terrible. Paying yet another time for Dominion is. I bought the sets irl, bought some on MF and have to pay again, if I want to have the option to play the occasional game. If I were playing more Dominion I wouldnīt mind this at all, but I donīt see myself playing enough games. For me it would probably come down that I am paying about $1 for each game I am playing online.

If you hadnīt posted them, I would have definitely forgotten about Explorer and Harvest.
Would add Harem and Mine to the list.
The only reason I still know that Scout exists is because I visit this forum and there are more posts about that card than any other.
I am pretty sure that half of my game group has all forgotten about Scout. If it shows up in the randomizer we switch it out for another card or we might as well play with only 9 kingdom cards. The Scout cards are still pretty much in Mint condition ;-)

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Festival
« on: April 16, 2016, 09:42:06 am »
Festival is my favorite card in the game.
You can add extra terminals to your deck, always have enough buys and do not have to worry about your payload.
The card is really relaxing to play with. I do have to say that I rarely play competitively and try to do something fun and this card is always fun.

Putting the fun aspect aside. You really want some kind of draw with the card. Mentioned cards like Minion, Tactician and Library are awesome with the card, but even Moat, Smithy or especially Courtyard are great with the card. The extra payload and +buy help in picking up additional cheap draw cards and the extra actions let you play them.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Multiplayer house rules?
« on: April 15, 2016, 05:48:00 am »
Wow that is quite a harsh blacklist. I only play 4p games irl and I try to balance the board a bit regarding attack cards, because it can be too frustating for some players, but then you need at least some interaction between players or we are all playing solitaire. Luckily my group agrees on this.

I agree with Donald that it is much easier to skip Cursers in a 4p game than in a 2p game. You can focus on trashing down and let the other 3 players curse the crap out of each other and while you are getting more curses you can deal much better with them. In most cases it will still be the better option to go for the cursers, but it is not as bad as in a 2p game.

I skipped the cursers a couple of times, just for the fun of it and it worked out surprisingly well. Adventures brings Ratcatcher and Raze to the table, which do an amazing job dealing with junk. A few extra Ratcatchers for example completely counter Torturer.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Militia
« on: April 10, 2016, 03:49:43 pm »
One thing I've been wondering is how much stronger Militia is as first player. Does anyone have any math or just good intuitions on this?

It is very noticeable with powerful $5 cards on the board. The first player to play Militia is likely hitting $5 that turn and has a good chance to deny his opponent that card the following turn. This advantage is even bigger with 4 players, since it is likely that at least one player will play a Militia each round and if you managed to get something like a Wharf before that you have a huge advantage.
