Dominion General Discussion / Re: Heirloom Speculation
« on: September 12, 2017, 04:15:22 am »
Some ideas that haven't been mentioned:

A heirloom could allow each play to chose a card available from the supply up to $x to replace a copper in their starting hand. No extra printing cost and a nice interesting option if there were multiple good options out there.

Also I don't see why heirlooms would have to be restricted to $0 - $2 cost cards. If both players get the same thing or same choices available to them then maybe there could be a $6 card in there? Why not? It would make for some more interesting remodel options at the start game.

Bring on Nocture! I'm pumped.

I run a tournament with my friends about 3 times a year. 90% of them arn't obsessed enough to play Dominion online like I am but the tournament night gets everyone pumped. I often think that people will be getting sick of it but once we get the medieval music cranking a bit of dinner, maybe some sangria then everyone is keen! I try to get 3 or 4 tables of 4 players so its pretty sociable but even the worst players dont like seeing the 10% of us who play more frequently win so they are out to kill. I call the night COMDOM... Competitive Dominion.

Keen to playtest! I run an up to date iMac 2013, with OS Sierra. Probably not that helpful but I have enthusiasm to boot!

Dominion Articles / Re: MDMA: deck types
« on: October 21, 2016, 12:23:24 am »
My friend and I have started a spread sheet to record all our games together and gather stats. We are adding what strat we think we went for to the stats and it is by far the most tedious and irritating part of recording with otherwise has been rather jovial. So this topic is rather interesting...

I dont think we are necessarily correct I am totally open to change or ridicule but our interpretation is a little different from anything discussed so here it is:
We have been using BM, Slog, Engine, Combo and Tempo as our defining strats, for us they mean this:

BM - Pure BM! Useless pretty much...
Slog - Big deck, bad cycling, lack of control by late game but if it has worked you are set up already.
Engine - High reliable cycling, often able to pick up whole deck, once its set up generally can get at least 1 prov per turn.
Combo - A deck that goes off in a monster turn or that is based totally on the interplay between specific cards.
Tempo - A deck that is nothing of the above but is timely. Something that would generally try to beat the other options through speed as opposed to great efficiency/cyclability.

When we have the sheet totally set up I will post it.

Hey Polk!

Yeah we have been trialling the spread and ranking the cards is real teadious, sometimes kind of fun but others not.... Deck composition would be easier and could be more telling anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.

Back to the idea of money and Dominion.

I would be curious to try and implement a poker style betting in rounds to Dominion. Say its $1 to play then you can bet again after x hands, if everyone in still in keep playing and bet again after x hands. Thus players who get beaten by a 5/2 split or something can bow down and 'fold' their decks early on. You would probably want about 3 rounds of betting, one round before the game starts but after seeing the board, another not too deep into the game maybe turn 4 or 5 then another around turn 12, then play it out.

I am more than happy playing for no money but I would definitely sign up to something like this...

Thanks for the reply Qvist!

We originally thought that we didn't want to spread the points out like that because in your example cultist would then fly ahead by so much, whereas if you had fixed points at least the top card of every game gets an even rating. You have made me rethink that though because maybe the fact that cultist could win without any other cards shows how strong it is? I think you are right in just getting the winners pick for rating the cards.

We have, however, come up with another idea... Inspired by this article http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13822.0
Maybe we could give all kingdom cards a grade instead? From A to whatever maybe D, then if there were 3 equally important cards they could all get A's instead of having to pick out just one card for top place or probably more notably a bunch of helpful cards could all get B's. It also means the bottom cards get a bit of statage even if it is just confirming their bottomness. Maybe something like:

A: Crucial to winning strategy! The strat was built around this/these cards.
B: Crucial support card to winning strat. Played an important role but would be replaceable in another kingdom.
C: Mildly helpful and wouldn't hurt your deck but not needed.
D: Bad! Would negatively impact your deck.

Thanks heaps for the feedback. Yes it will take some time but spread sheet stat gathering is time well spent! Haha! I am most excited about having card champion stats like, whenever Beggar is in play player x wins 95% haha.

Would be keen for any other opinions if they lurk anywhere?

Dominion General Discussion / Most crucial and jovial dominion stats?
« on: August 24, 2016, 12:28:52 am »
So...

My dear friend and I are setting up a spread sheet to record all the games we play so we can try and gather stats for informative, jovial and bragging purposes. This does add a good 5 mins to each game we play as we compile the info but it is actually quite a fun process and a good post-game strategy ponder opportunity. Anyway, I thought I would pose the idea here to see if any of you have any better ideas as to what stats we could gather and more importantly how we could interpret them. Maybe someone has already done this too?

The info we are recording is:
Score
Whether there were Shelters or Colonies/Platnum
Who went first
Amount of turns each
Cards in kingdom (including Events and Landmarks)
5/2 splits
First 2 buys
Empty piles at end of game
What strategy we think we went
The card we thought was cutest...

I dont think there are more hard stats to gather...

Where it gets more interpretive, we are also rating each card we used in the kingdom based on the strategy we had in favour. So for example in my deck the most crucial cards IMO were Trade Route, Treasure Trove, Vault, Nobles, Great Hall so I put Trade Route at 1, Treasure Trove at 2, Vault 3 etc...  My mates were Native Village, Trade Route, Page, Stone Mason he does the same in a seperate row. It doesnt matter that he only has 4 to my 5 cards and despite my strategy being considerably worse I still rate the cards I thought were more crucial to my strat during the game. The cards will then be given a share of x points, distributed something like this:
1: 20 pts
2: 15 pts
3: 10 pts
4: 5 pts
5: 3 pts
6: 1 pts
7: 0 pts
Below 7 is most likely too bad to be scored.
We are not totally sold on point distribution so would love any feedback in that department? Would also be keen to hear whether you think this system of card rating has any value? Obviously after we play a few 100+ games things will begin to get more interesting.

We have another page which lists the cards and shows how many times they have each been seen and what we scored them.

Stats I am then keen to see will be:
Amount of games won by each player when x card is in on the table.
Top 10 kingdom cards based on our scoring system.
How often 5/2 split wins.
How often going first wins.
Who wins more often when shelters, colonies, potions, attacks are available.

Anyway, that is the vibe...

What do you think?

Hey hey!

Thanks for the replies team. Yes when you put it like that, comparing it to other things like all the epic new stuff in Empires as opposed to just blissful nothing it does make it less appealing, let alone the reduced market.

What an efficient thread this was!

Soooo...

The upcoming Empires expansion is making me think about dominion all day every day... Woo woo! I was reading in one of the previews of Empires, that despite pleas from some people here Donald wont put in any cards into new expansions that rely on cards or items from previous expansions because that would then annoy the people who dont have those expansions. This is fair enough BUT has an expansion expansion ever been discussed?? An expansions that says on the box "an expansion for Dominion expansions", and which includes cards that can combo or refer to any added cards or items throughout all the expansions? It feels as though this would satisfy us dedicated fans who own them all and not annoy the people who dont because they could easily avoid the expansion. I am sure this is not an original idea but I couldn't find anything with my lazy research skills already written on this topic.

What would the general consensus be as to whether this would be a worth while endeavour or not? A part of me thinks it would be awesome! But another part thinks maybe there wouldn't be as many possibilities as I think there would be? If you cast you gaze on this thread from the Holy Land of Dominion, Donald, I would love to hear as to whether you would enjoy making an expansion of this vein, and if you think there is enough material that would be able to be expanded and have point not just more of the same?

A quick think of all the features that could be combined, expanded or called on from action, event or landmark cards would be: coin tokens, various sea side mats, embargo tokens, potions, colony + platinum, victory chips, shelters, ruins, spoils, tavern mat, supply pile tokens, debt tokens.

Merry Empires everyone!

Morg.

Thanks Stef that makes sense.

So I read that it is hard getting the stats from the new MF client. Will they work with you in future to make it possible?

My compeditiveness has been sturred by this awesome forum! Cant wait to get to know some more players.

How do I know what to do from here?
