Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion for College
« on: January 01, 2019, 04:01:04 am »
I'd invest in a storage solution and bring everything. You'll miss it. College is one of the places you can actually play games all the time.

This. I had a weekly dominion group in college (with all the expansions at the time) and it was so much fun. And I've found you can make a lot of friends by saying you have all of dominion.

Dominion FAQ / Re: What counts as an attack?
« on: December 29, 2018, 09:01:56 pm »
Basically anything that it would make sense for Moat to block, is my impression. So for example, Ill Gotten Gains could be an attack, but couldn't be blocked since it doesn't attack when played. On the flip side, Council Room could be an attack but it wouldn't usually make sense to block it.

The first place I would look is Ebay, but I have no idea what the selection is there.

I'm looking at this on my phone and I have the feeling the formatting isn't working for me.

Can we all agree that Awaclus hates 3P games and move forward with our lives?

Side note: I just got a new phone and Awaclus is now officially the first word I've added to its dictionary.

Hey, I understood that reference.

Now I'm just waiting for Stash to show up in the Black Market...

Now I want to see a rhyming Dominion expansion!

New suggestion for ShuffleIt: simulate printing errors. You can have the faded Renaissance cards, the bendy Adventures cards, any miscuts there were (was that Empires or Adventures?), and slightly different card backs for all expansions. That'll make it feel more like the real game. Then you can have people buy virtual card sleeves lest their Coppers and Estates get worn out.

Is Cathedral worth buying on a board with no extra gains? Because buying it turn 1 means you'll always have a 10-or-fewer-card deck.

Rules Questions / Re: Inheritance and Border Guard

Where was the ruling that Capitalism affects cards with the +$1 token? I thought it just affected Teacher, which refers to the +$1 token by name.

Seems like the color possibilities for card types have just about been exhausted! Have you considered different patterns (zigzags, polka dots, etc.) for when colors can no longer do the trick?

Travellers have a pattern instead of a color, kind of.

Is there a specific reason or formula for the order types are written on cards?

Just going to leave this here in case someone doesn't want to go through the work of inheriting Caravan Guard on a board with Capitalism.

Capitalism drastically simplifies infinite loops. This is a loop for arbitrary amounts of VP:

Hand: Storyteller, Rogue, Monument, Watchtower

Trash: Mandarin

Play Storyteller to play Monument, Rogue gaining Mandarin (topdeck Storyteller, Monument, Rogue), reveal Watchtower to trash, draw Storyteller, Monument, Rogue back from Storyteller.

Awesome find. You don't even need Monument per se; anything with +coins and +buy will also do the trick, since you can play it an arbitrary amount of times and just empty the supply afterwards. Goons is best, of course, but you win even without the VP chips.

Still, you'll likely not see a board with all of Mandarin, Storyteller, Watchtower, Rogue and Capitalism in a lifetime if you always play full random.

You'd need some way to build up coins, which you can't do if Storyteller keeps eating them. But it should be simple enough to find an alternative to Storyteller.

If Patron was Rats, then Rats could reveal it.

Poor House will shine!
That seems to be an understatement. In fact, I myself (whenever I eventually get Renaissance) will avoid playing with Poor House and Capitalism, it just seems to be a borderline broken combo, given the fact that Poor House costs $1.

Keep in mind that the value of Poor House goes down as you get more, because they're all treasures. Two can be good but the third is just a Silver, and the fourth is a Copper.

I'm glad there's something mind-blowing that wasn't in the previews. Looks like with Conclave and a throne variant you can start an action chain in your buy phase, which may or may not have interesting effects.

Also, Iron cards and Courtier get a buff.

As it happens, I've been teaching a lot of new people Dominion in the past week or four. A deck-and-discard mat would actually help a lot, given how easy people find it to get the discard pile confused with in-play. And you have to wait until someone plays a gainer then draw which triggers a reshuffle before it's even apparent to them why it can matter.

Or trashes down to two Markets.

It's not a garden path sentence, but I always liked "Flying planes can be scary". Is that in a Wikipedia article? I forget. I think we talked about it in a linguistics class I took.

Was Nocturne designed especially with full random in mind?  To me it's felt like, these are some of my favorite mechanics but it gets a bit overwhelming when you're playing with lots of Nocturne cards.  It solves the issue that Dark Ages and Prosperity have of having a really fun mechanic that only 3 cards use, so I can see that being a consideration.  But I know you've said you mostly play with two or so expansions at a time.

Dominion Articles / Re: Draw-to-X engines
« on: October 10, 2018, 09:34:35 am »
I think it would be worth it to include a list of draw-to-x cards, since really only 4 cards say "draw until you have x cards in your hand" (and Jack isn't that great of an engine card). I mean, at this point we all probably know, but for newer players it's good to mention that Minion, Menagerie, and Scholar are lumped in with the other cards.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: card ranking lists
« on: October 09, 2018, 11:20:14 pm »
i'm with u.  How is this even close to that low. It thins ur dek, turns estates into useful cards.

It doesn't thin your deck, it replaces stop cards with other stop cards, and it is itself a stop card that requires you to get another stop card (Potion) before you can even get it. Turning Estates into Gold is not as great as it sounds when you can only start doing that on your third shuffle after adding in two glorified Curses to your deck.

I actually meant to respond to transmogrify.  Didn't see someone the transmute part.  yeah transmute is awful.  And belongs at the bottom of any list.

But Transmogrify doesn't thin your deck either... unless you have Sewers!

I'm not sure what you're saying is wrong here.  It seems to be functioning correctly.
