Dominion General Discussion / Re: The defining cards of the sets
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:44:11 am »
Why should the defining cards be the strong cards? Other than Prosperity, Seaside, and to a certain extent Cornucopia, strong cards aren't representative of the sets and thus aren't "defining".

Base: Mine. Yes I don't mind getting 1 & playing BM+X, but like many other Base cards, needs lots of work in order for it to be part of a combo etc.
Intrigue: Pawn. Sometimes ignorable, sometimes vital, and gives you choices to make.
Seaside: Wharf. Well it's either this or Fishing Village. Tactician is strong, but it's not representative.
Alchemy: Alchemist. Embodies the very question "so do I buy that Potion or not?"
Prosperity: Goons. Again KC is strong, but it's not representative.
Cornucopia: Horn of Plenty. Rewards managed variety, not all-out variety (Fairgrounds) or 5-card decks (Hunting Party).
Hinterlands: Cartographer. Rewards careful play; can become a trap card if you don't do it correctly.

Oh dear... this turn just makes me feel depressed.

— RTB's turn 7 —
RTB plays a Treasure Map.
... trashing the Treasure Map.
... trashing a Treasure Map from hand.
... gaining 4 Golds on the deck.
RTB plays a Silver and 2 Coppers.
RTB buys a Treasure Map.
(RTB draws: a Curse and 4 Golds.)

If you want to get Goons over Gold, fine, but get Silvers on $5. If you don't want to buy Silvers on $4 or $5, then make sure you get Gold on $6 first.

If you consistently avoid buying Silvers and Golds, well no surprise that you have trouble getting $ on a board where the only +Action card is Peddler.

My first thought to this scenario is LOL CHAPEL/STEWARD/BARON

Donald X. Vaccarino, but not Dominion

Well theoretically.... I bought an Estate and a Gold. My opponent plays a Smugglers. "What can I gain?" he asks. "An Estate," I reply.  The game can go on. I haven't lied. He should have paid attention... (Also why the heck did I buy a Gold and an Estate?)
You bought an estate with a pair of hoards in play, gaining two golds.
If so, you didn't buy Duchy + Estate here because...?

Heh, just played an interesting FG game:
Apothecary, Baron, Fool's Gold, Forge, Lookout, Mine, Possession, Potion, Saboteur, Treasure Map, Vineyard

oppo opened Baron. I thought it over and decided that hey, if he gets 10 FG's, my Possessions will really rock. So I duly opened with the dreaded Potion/Copper...

Opponent spent the next few turns getting the FG's, as expected, while I bought apothecaries and possessions. Turns out, there's a very interesting mechanic with Possession and FG: if on a Possessed hand I pick up 4 FG's, I can play 3 of them, buy a Province, and since I'm now the one gaining the Province, I can "trash" the last FG for a Gold...

I probably significantly misplayed after the opening, but man, is it ever fun to possess a 10 FG deck!

Game 6: shark_bait 33 - 42 olneyce
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201202/10/game-20120210-113934-bcd04d9c.html
Fishing Village/Embassy/Mint mirror match.  He managed to manipulate his Embassy earlier and was able to trash 5 coppers buying his Mint, while I was only able to trash 3.  However, that mattered much less than expected since we were drawing big hands with Embassies pretty regularly.  He used a Trader to gain 5 Silvers from his early Contraband purchase; I thought that would swing the game to him.  Is it just bad luck for him to have lost?  I can't really see anything I did that was that special here.

Game 6: shark_bait 33 - olneyce 42

I'm forced to open Contraband/Native Village with a 5/2 start to olneyce's Fishing Village/Silver.  He correctly blocks me from getting golds when I played my Contraband.  I get a couple more Native Villages when I have another CCEEE hand and when I have 6 and Gold is blocked (Trader/Native Village).  I manage to pick up silvers from my contraband and transition to a BM type of game but it's not fast enough and olneyce takes the win.

You know, reading the descriptions alone, two of you seemed to be talking about different games...

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Most Vetoed Card?
« on: February 09, 2012, 11:21:25 pm »
In the past month or so, the one time I recall seeing Chapel survive my opponent's veto is when he left it as a trap (Thief) which I duly fell into.

If there's only one Village on the board, I like to veto it. King's Court, Laboratory & Wharf are also high on my veto list, as I know I usually play sub-optimally when these are on the board. And in the meta-environment, most of my opponents are vetoing the swingy stuff anyway, so I don't need to.

Help! / Re: How did Ironworks/Gardens fail here?
« on: February 09, 2012, 02:32:09 am »

All well and good, but Ironworks/Gardens vs I-don't-know-what-strategy-he's-going-for-yet -> ?

Well, if he doesn't get Ironworks with either of his two opening buys, then you know he's not going for IW/gardens, so you load up on the ironworks - if he starts getting gardens, then you use your IW advantage to win the split even by reacting. If he DOES get IW on an opening, then he's likely going IW/gardens, so you have to make sure to start in on the gardens after your 2nd IW. Since you don't need to make the decision until your fourth buy at the earliest, you have plenty of time to see what's up.

It's a tricky decision only in the rare case where there's some other alternate strategy that still has a very similar opening.
I don't think it's that rare, plenty of 5/2 openers don't tell you whether opponent is going Gardens or not (probably without the Ironworks though). Take e.g. a Tactician/Courtyard opening. I guess barsooma's advice works, get as many Ironworks as I think I can get away with first...

Ironworks/Gardens mirror -> get 2 Ironworks before Gardens
Ironworks/Gardens vs any Province strategy -> get pretty much all the Ironworks before Gardens (well, not all, but a lot, like 5, 6 or 7).
All well and good, but Ironworks/Gardens vs I-don't-know-what-strategy-he's-going-for-yet -> ?

Looking at the OP, this didn't seem to start off as a fun thread.

You leave the Counting House at the bottom if it's not time to call it up for action yet. If you have a bunch of Pearl Divers, you get to control when the Counting House moves to the top.

Ignore it if ambassador, masquerade, JoaT or chapel are on the board. (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120114-085710-15ddf643.html)
Interesting, I just happened to read michaeljb's description of his Isodom 3 match against Marcus316 right before this thread:

Game 5: michaeljb 39 - 32 Marcus316
Ambassador, Apothecary, Chapel, Coppersmith, Embargo, Highway, Ill-Gotten Gains, Loan, Stables, Trade Route
The first thing I notice is that I want to Embargo IGG. (...)

And HT is even first on the list for Hunting Party combos.

It's strange that there was only a three point difference at the end of the game, then.  And that's with my opponent having an extra turn.
No it's not. That's because he bought Loan, which anti-synergises with the HP deck (only gives 1 coin, adds one new distinct card, and no, you don't really want to trash Coppers anyway). Not only that, he then proceeds to play it on multiple occasions that trigger a reshuffle. It's a wonder he was only punished once (his beautiful Turn 12 draw).

How does Jack fare against Jester? All those Silvers & Coppers for Jester to hit.

I originally voted for Set 9, but I changed my mind when I realised that it basically has a lot of cards that are known to be awesome by conventional wisdom. Chapel, FV, Bridge, Mountebank, Goons, then basically glue in the form of Ironworks/Watchtower/Gardens, and round off with Highway and IGG. Looks an interesting board sure, but too many "good" cards for me.

I changed my vote to Set 8, primarily due to the presence of Secret Chamber. Looking at all the sets, we don't see many "bad" cards in there - but this set has SC when the only thing resembling a deck-inspection attack (Bureaucrat) looks weak, and made it shine against traditional Ambassador play as so beautifully demonstrated by olneyce.
