I'm surprised there's no mention of the DC Superheroes deck-building game, or maybe it's just my brother-in-law that really enjoys it. I've had fun with it. It's got a few mechanics that differentiate it (you randomly draw superheroes at the beginning of the game that give you unique abilities throughout the game), but seems a bit imbalanced.

I believe there's a Marvel deckbuilder also, but I haven't played it.

Right now I have 19 posts on the Shuffle iT forums.

Where are these forums? I realize there are probably various levels of access. Is there a part of them for the public, and what's the link?

Ah, yes. Yours makes more sense.

If I ever do this, I think I would have a base of 2x10 or maybe 4x5 or 4x6. Then make either another 2x10 unit (or 2 1x10 units) or something comparable for 4x6 units, and make them interlock. I would get bugged with all the spaces that would typically be empty.

That game board, if doubled, could hold the max number of piles currnetly possible within the game, including events/landmarks (assuming you only use two), with four spaces left.
I will now list those piles, feel free to let me know if I missed anything. Base cards and trash(8), platinum/colony and prosperity card(11), looter and ruins(13), spoils and spoil generator(15), tournament and prizes(17), page, peasant, and their upgrades(27), hermit/madman and urchin/mercenary(31), potion cost and potions(33), black market and black market deck(35), one other kingdom card(36), and events/landmarks(38). I now plan on actually building this.
Edit: fixed the 8 and ) turning into a face (again)

By my count, you would only need 32.

11 kingdom cards (including bane)
8 base cards
3 plat/colony/potion
8 (ruins, spoils, prizes, page upgrades, peasant upgrades, madman, mercenary, black market deck)
2 events/landmarks

So 11x3, to give you a spare event if you want to do that, or 8x4 to be a little more compact from side to side. Maybe add some extras for tokens (or just figure that the likelihood of needing the max number of piles is pretty slim.)

I've learned that people really don't like to let you play out your complex Adventures turns, and the number of resignations seems to have skyrocketed. Anecdotally, a lot of these are on the last turn just seconds before finishing.

Of course this may be just a rush to go explore the new cards more after the game is out of hand. Regardless, I understand and I don't hold it against anyone, it's just something I've noticed.

a couple of remote possibilities:

  • an option to define the nature of your resignation. I often have to end a game to tend to a waking child or something of that sort. If I could mark them as 1)resigned in lieu of loss or conceded, 2) resigned for unrelated reasons and 3) maybe another option, then at the least I could filter them when I search my own game logs. Or, possibly I could see different ratings for different types of games. Obviously, from an official standpoint, they would all count the same, but at least I could see the distinction.
  • somewhat relatedly, maybe there could be an option for aliases. So all my games are rated under Main Name, but I can choose to play under Alias 1 or Alias 2, and they would be rated independently. (Possibly I use one when I'm seriously playing and another when casual). Or maybe just rated and unrated does the trick here

And, in continuing with the AI, it should still count as a win or a non-game, as it would if you just chose not to play.

I would like this, as people often resign just as you're getting some fun engine working (they are clearly unimpressed that you are playing six goons with watchtower in hand), but it would be fun to finish it up.

Do you have any links or references to those arguments? I find the premise interesting, and my initial googling has failed to turn it up.

I did find the Incongruity Theory of Humor, which seemed related, but not quite the same as what you are saying.

Game Reports / unique governor game
« on: June 15, 2015, 10:02:57 pm »
I'm putting this out there to see if it was mostly luck, or if there are some lessons to distill

Code: [Select]
Ambassador, Doctor, Lookout, Storeroom, Governor, Soothsayer, Altar, Border Village, Nobles, King's Court
None of us had any points until the last turn.

My first thought was that lookout was the better trasher for this particular board, but upon closer examination, my opponent trashed more than me. It seems that it was mostly a case of the drawing governor benefiting me as much as my opponent, compounded by the presence of a $7 card and a $6 victory for the trashing governor. I thought it was a good effort on his part to try and soothsayer himself back into contention. Given the spread at that point, it was worth a try.

Thoughts on lessons to draw and optimizing play in general?

I'll second the notion that just playing and exploring the game is a great way to go.

This page on the wiki has beginner resources.

I'll add, that depending on the nature of gameplay between you and your spouse, you may want to keep her updated on the things you learn from venues other than your own experience. Your style of play will probably change as you read the forum, blog and/or wiki, and it's not always fun for the other person who might get left in the dust or who may be playing the game in a very different way.

Council Room Feedback / council room game queries

I know this is a long shot, and I'm certainly not asking anyone to do anything major. I'm mostly just wondering if there's something I'm missing on my end

The council room stats show over 2000 games for johannes starzmann (my main isotropuc username). When I search for games for johannes, I only get a few hundred. Is there a way to get all of them?

Game Reports / Re: Don't buy that province
« on: January 20, 2015, 01:45:55 pm »
Here's a fun vineyards engine that also illustrates your point. I probably would have lost if I had purchased even one province before the last turn. I had to be especially patient, as the only source of +buy was City.

However, you could probably also argue that my opponent played sub-optimally (opening Trading post/crossroads; helping me deplete the Cities even though he wasn't planning on using them), so Davio's point stands as well.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Rebuild
« on: January 18, 2015, 03:18:23 am »
Assuming that is the log, then I would add that he also made a mistake when he named province instead of duchy, leaving him with three estates and a province instead of two estates and two duchies. Others may disagree, but I usually prefer to get rid of all my estates before converting duchies to provinces. (You did the same thing, but your deck was in better shape, at least).

On a similar note, it's usually also a mistake to buy an estate (which he did) thinking you can turn it into another duchy before they run out. I've tried that way more often than I should have. I think it's worked out once.

So his "bad luck" was especially self-inflicted.

Game Reports / an odd comeback, looking for instructional value
« on: January 07, 2015, 01:44:12 pm »
Here's kind of an odd game that I'm puzzling for instructional value. I can't tell if either of us did anything particularly right or wrong, or if it just kind of happened.

The kingdom was

Code: [Select]
Doctor, Fishing Village, Advisor, Marauder, Militia, Noble Brigand, Festival, Soothsayer, Vault, PeddlerPlatinum, Ruins

I was playing pretty light-heartedly, and just kind of thought I would go with Doctor, as it was the only trasher (and I opened 5/2), and that FV, Peddler, Festival and Vault would provide enough economy, perhaps allowing me to skip Gold and go straight to Platinum. I enjoy trying to win without attacks, so I skipped those.

However, I felt like I was pretty unlucky with Doctor (or I didn't track well enough), and thought at the time that I was behind for most of the game and that he was building the better deck, though obviously I question this in retrospect.

The main lessons that seem plausible to me:

  • Doctor is pretty powerful, even if it's not trashing multiple cards, especially when you add on the value of setting up your next hand/draw
  • Soothsayer is especially weak in Colony kingdoms
  • Militia's hand size reduction is significantly weakened against a thinner deck
  • My opponent didn't start greening early enough, and might have been able to win if he had (though on looking back, he maybe didn't have the economy to do so
  • Spending a turn burning $13 on a Doctor+Overpay was probably worth it, though I'm unsure if it was a game-changer

Or, maybe it was just mostly luck. Any thoughts on optimizing play here?

Game Reports / Re: money-less winning kingdoms

That forge-workshop-double tac is truly impressive. Only one silver, totally coinless. I even wonder if you could have gotten a double forge going for multiple victory cards each turn. I also liked how it used almost all the cards in the kingdom.

Game Reports / money-less winning kingdoms
« on: March 25, 2014, 04:18:47 am »
I was pretty satisfied with this win: Over

I mean, it's not anything too special, but it was fun to win without any money in hand at the end.

I post it now to inquire for other kingdoms where you won without money. Or even better, you only purchased 0-2 silver or gold at any point during the game. I imagine they're not that rare, I can think of quite a few possibilities off hand, but I thought it might be interesting to see some of the kingdoms where this was a solid strategy.

Did councilroom have an achievement for this?

Blueblimp's idea (perhaps it was also stated previously) does seem like one of the simplest ways to go about it. Perhaps it could be unlimited for casual and pro could still be full random or have a banlist that's limited to 1-3 cards.

Hey, I finally registered just to be able to say thanks to the many fine folks who have developed the extension, the logs, the prettifier and leader board, and probably many other things I enjoy regularly. It seems like untold hours/months/years that you have put in. 'Tis much appreciated.
