Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Previews #2: Shepherd, Pooka, Cemetery
« on: October 24, 2017, 06:46:32 am »
Is it just me, or does Pooka look weak? It can only trash 6 cards, and +4 Cards doesn't seem that much better than Spice Merchant. I think I would almost always buy spice merchant over this unless there's no solid draw.

It could trash IGGs, or Masterpieces, I guess.  Also silvers?  And any coppers you might buy...

Could Pooka BM be a thing?  Trash coppers/silvers to it for draw, and buy gold/province as appropriate?

"I play a Spy."
"I don't have a deck at the moment, it's all in my hand or my discard pile."
"Well that's fine."
I heard this one from a guy when I played Swindler. "Right," I said, "so shuffle your discard. That's the general rule when you need a card from your deck."

"But *I* don't need a card from my deck. *You* do."

That's such a genius defence, I'd almost be inclined to let it stand!

Feodum should have been seen by now.

I respectfully disagree.  Feodum can be a game-winning card if it appears with a good silver-gainer or with trash-for benefit.

Are any of these cards in the bottom rank ever game-winners?  Counting House if combined with Travelling Fair, sure, but that's a very specific circumstance.  I guess Pirate Ship in 3-4 player, but who plays 3-4 player?

I note that most of the new 3-cost cards from Empires have placed mid-table.  I think this either means that Donald X is great at balancing cards, or the community doesn't quite know what to make of them yet.  Maybe both.

Why does Mario always play Cornucopia/Adventures?

So he can Save the Princess?

The main thing I would want to change is make Sea Hag put a Curse on your Deck without discarding the top card. On average that would make the card ever so slightly stronger but would eliminate those games that you feel like you lost just because you got your Sea Hag or your Chapel hagged.

Sea Hag is designed that way for a very good reason though.  It stops the top of a player's deck getting crowded with Curses in a multiplayer, multi-Hag situation.

That's a good point. I generally play 4P irl and only own Seaside and Base, so most of the time it's those or those + Cornucopia. So I get a lot of Sea Hag multiplayer games (relative to the total number of games I get to play) and haven't found that Sea Hag discards Curse terrible often.

See, that surprises me.  In a 4P IRL game with Sea Hag, I can totally see everyone opening SH/Silver and player four getting 3 curses on top of their deck by turn four.

Good point, but it's still way more elegant if it didn't discard a random card from your deck, even if that means one more line of text.

A better version would be: 'Every player reveals the top cards of his deck. If it's not a curse, they gain a curse to the top of their deck.'

There, no more multiplayer horribleness.

I like it, but if Sea Hag loses the ability to give out multiple curses per turn, it would need either a power buff (+2 coin?) or a price reduction, IMHO.

So for Courtier, how many cards have three or more types? I can think of—

Haunted Woods, Swamp Hag, Bridge Troll, Enchantress
Caravan Guard
Followers
Cultist, Marauder
Knights
Distant Lands
Warrior, Soldier
Humble Castle, Opulent Castle, Small Castle

Any I'm missing?

I can't think of any others, but Dame Josephine gets an honourable mention for having four types.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who came and who helped to make the day so enjoyable!  Who knew that Dominion players were such a great bunch of guys?  It was a pleasure to have you all.

I didn't catapult any rocks.  I had several catapulted at me, though.  Those doing the catapulting certainly looked like they were having a good time :)

Attention Brits!

On Saturday 23rd July we are holding a meet-up in Reading, Berkshire for Dominion players, where we will be test-driving the new Empires set!

This event is being hosted at the local University, which is a fifteen minute walk from Reading train station.  There is parking on site.

We aim to start at 10am and go on into the evening, possibly as late as 10pm. Of course, anyone attending can come for as much or as little of this period as they like.

Free tea and coffee will be provided.  Food is available from the campus' bar/cafe/restaurant which opens at noon, or you can bring a packed lunch.  There is a microwave too.

Currently, five players from f.ds and beyond are planning to attend, but we can certainly handle many more if anyone is interested.

So, if you would like to try out Empires, or just like the idea of many hours of intensive IRL Dominion, and can make it to Reading, you are very welcome to join us.

To express an interest, or if you have any questions, please PM me.

I'd come myself, except I think my wife might consider my travelling to Germany to play Dominion as grounds for divorce.
Look on the bright side: that would give you more time free for playing Dominion.  :)

...

Excuse me, I need to complete some paperwork.

Thanks.  Has there been any news about a UK release?
That is just not information I ever have. I will find out it's in UK stores when someone posts "I got it, also I'm in the UK!"

OK, thanks.  I'll try to remember the correct wording when I get my copy.

I got it, also I'm in the UK!

I wish I had more than just one upvote to give.

Darn, just before some forum regulars meet for the "European release party" in Karlsruhe.
Well, as too many have voted for the Brexit we can probably still consider next weekend the European release party...

Well, I haven't played it yet, though I have sleeved the cards!  Your launch party sounds awesome and I definitely think it counts!

(Of course, the UK remains in the EU... and even if it leaves it will still be in Europe because... well... geography...)

I'd come myself, except I think my wife might consider my travelling to Germany to play Dominion as grounds for divorce.

Vielen gluck!

Report from the UK; I just picked up Empires from my FLGS here in Reading, Berkshire!

So, British players, it's out there in the wild. Happy hunting!

No sign of it yet on their website...
They have a weekly newsletter (it appears on the website on Friday afternoon, I believe) that announces new releases.  Let's keep our fingers crossed for this Friday.
No sign of it this week, either...
Esdevium's latest newsletter isn't on their website yet, but this morning I received an email from Board Game Extras (which is where I always buy my Dominion expansions from) saying that Empires is being released next week.  That suggests to me that it's going to be announced in the neswletter.  Maybe our long wait on this side of the Pond is nearing its end.

Esdevium website is updated. It's there!
